Late Metallica legend and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Cliff Burton would have turned 62 on February 10. In honor of his birthday, friends held their annual tribute to the musician who called Castro Valley home. This year’s “Cliff Burton Day” event started at the Chabot Theater with stories of the celebrated bassist and ended with a massive music jam at the Valley Inn on Castro Valley Boulevard. Nicknamed “The Major Rager,” Cliff died on September 27, 1986, in a bus accident while on tour with Metallica in Sweden. He was 24. Childhood friend and Faith No More drummer Mike Bordin and host Nicholas Gomez spoke with Cliff’s family and friends about their memories of Cliff, including his older sister Connie.

MAC MEETING

Car Wash Proposal Doused By Amy Sylvestri

CASTRO VALLEY FORUM

Community and business advocates threw a bucket of cold water on a plan to convert Castro Valley Lumber into a car wash, according to a proposal heard at the February 13 Castro Valley Municipal Advisory Council (MAC) meeting. The proposal would see the lumberyard and surrounding buildings demolished on the 1.3-acre lot and a car wash constructed at 2495 Castro Valley Boulevard, on the southeast corner of Norbridge Avenue. The “Splash Brothers Carwash” would be a self-service facility with three pay lanes for cars. The business would have between three and eight employees and proposed operating hours of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. seven days a week. Several speakers questioned the value of having a car wash in such a prominent spot on the Boulevard. Others said there is no need for another car wash, as there are several in the area and two within four blocks of the new proposed car wash. see MAC on page 5

Castro Valley Composer and Producer, Tyler Coolidge, Wins Grammy Award By Mike McGuire

CASTRO VALLEY FORUM

Tyler Coolidge, a musician and music producer raised in Castro Valley, won the Grammy award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance or Song on February 4. It was the first nomination for the artist, who goes by the lower-case tyler coolidge professionally. He received the award for his work as a composer and producer on “Your Power” by Lecrae & Tasha Cobbs Leonard. It had been his first work with those artists. “It feels surreal,” he said of winning the honor. “I’m glad to be here and have it happen.” “Most musicians don’t get this honor in their lifetime,” Coolidge added. He hadn’t done that much work in Christian music, with his own work tending toward rap, hip-hop and rhythm and blues. He added that Cliff leaned into the bass guitar because he wanted to learn the TV intro to “Barney Miller.” The friendships later transformed into hard rock bands like EZ-Street, Agents of Misfortune, and Trauma. Several of the members of each band appeared on stage to pay tribute to Cliff. “It was the vibe in Castro Valley,” Bordin said. “Everybody knew everybody else, and we played our own and each other’s instruments. Medi-Cal ‘Eligibility’ Rules are Often Confused With Medi-Cal ‘Recovery’

Q:

Mother recently died after spending two years in a nursing home on Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal just sent us a bill for about $150,000 and says it will file a claim against her home. Yikes! We thought her home was an exempt asset. What do we do about the bill? By Gene L. Osofsky, Esq.

A:

SPECIAL TO THE FORUM

Your situation is all too common: families often confuse the Medi-Cal “eligibility” rules with the “recovery” rules. Her home was, indeed, exempt for eligibility purposes, but that exemption expired upon your mother’s death. Her home and most other exempt assets then became exposed to a Medi-Cal

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Let’s Set the Record Straight About Miley Dear Editor, It is very unfortunate that a hit piece was used against Supervisor Miley, which tells less than half the story. The purpose of a recent letter to the editor was based on issues that were investigated more than 10 years ago. Issues that he was cleared of more than 10 years ago. Campaigns of innuendo by an opposing candidate often reflect their lack of experience and lack of knowledge on the issues, so to bolster their image they attack the incumbent. Clearly this is an act of desperation to fabricate, mischaracterize, and lie about Supervisor Miley to tarnish his reputation prior to the March 5th primary election. Some examples are as follows: • He has consistently stated support for a sheriff’s oversight commission and an office of inspector general. He did not the cause any delays. The Board wants to implement sound policy. • He has never used his official position to influence the hiring of any family member by the County or one of their contractors. His children applied for their own jobs, went through the interview process and receive jobs because they are qualified for those positions. • He supported a hybrid model for redistricting, which would have allowed for an independent redistricting commission to play a role; but the other County Supervisors, who have passed, rejected it. • He is not standing in the way of an ethics commission or ethics policy. Voters must remember that all changes generally become items for union negotiations when they impact employment conditions, a process which often takes longer than we wish. • Despite supporting former Sheriff Ahern, he has the endorsement of the current Sheriff. • He does not use his office to enrich himself or the United Seniors. Yes, he is the

president and founder of this organization. He has fought to improve the quality of life for older adults in this county for the last 38 years, which is longer than his service as our supervisor. • It was Supervisor Miley who brought big Pharma to the table and now you have free disposable for your outdated, unused medicines. This kept the pills out of our water and out of the hands of those who suffer from drug addiction. • It is Supervisor Miley who moved to eliminate illegal dumping in the county, a project that is ongoing. Much is made of the donations he receives from developers. They are not buying his vote. However, it gives them access to discuss their issues. Access which he gives FREE to the people in District 4. He has an open-door policy; anyone can speak with him. He is approachable and he encourages everyone to share their concerns with him, so that the policies created by the Board of Supervisors improve the quality of life for all citizens. He has a proven and successful track record and the experience to continue delivering service to the people he serves in District 4 and countywide. I attend many county meetings and know that he is a 24/7 supervisor. While his opponent has a dismal attendance record on the Eden Mac, which he appointed her to four years ago. Like I said, he gives everyone a voice, but sometimes they only seek to build a resume, but don’t put in the work. I am sure next week another letter to the editor will appear disagreeing with my letter, but check Supervisor Miley’s record, ask others, and don’t be persuaded by those who I never see at a Board of Supervisors meeting, or any other meeting in District 4. Re-Elect Supervisor Nate Miley… he gets the job done! –Linda Tangren, Castro Valley

Cliff Burton’s Impact Extends Beyond CV Dear Editor, I’m a former Castro Valley resident and grew up there in the 70s and 80s. Castro Valley has an official Cliff Burton day on February 10. At a glance I don’t see anything about that in the Castro Valley forum. Cliff Burton with his royalties from Music has probably donated more to the citizens of Castro Valley than any other citizen in history. His royalties still will be helping with scholarships long into the future. At least you can mention something about February 10 before the event happens and at least a little blurb about the

day. He was a bass player in a band, called Metallica, but died before fame, and Fortune came his way. The albums he’s on have sold millions and continue to sell millions. Thank you very much for listening. I was much younger than him but fortunately I got to jam with him at sessions around Castro Valley. Musical genres shouldn’t affect any decision-making. If you’re at a higher level, such as myself music is music. And if you understand music, Cliff Burton was coming from a classical point of view. –Erik Cruze, Emeryville

It is Time We Rescind 2nd Amendment Dear Editor, The mass shooting at the Kansas City Superbowl celebration is another in a long string of gun tragedies in America. While there are law abiding gun owners, it only takes one bad apple to destroy the lives of many with a weapon made to kill. It is high time we

rescind the 2nd amendment, the long obsolete and dangerous amendment resulting in deaths never intended by our forefathers who enacted it. Please write your legislators and let’s begin a movement to rid us of the amendment that has become a poison across America. –Robert Thomas, Castro Valley

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

CV Eagle Scout Adds ‘Little Free Libraries’ at Local Farm By Jennifer J. Petrick

SPECIAL TO THE FORUM

Earlier this month, three “little free libraries” and supplies of donated books were installed at City Slicker Farms in Oakland, thanks to a partnership between the farm and Scouts with Castro Valley BSA Troop 708.
