In 1949, Elaine Johnson and 30 families gathered at Castro Valley Methodist to establish a two-room, co-operative nursery school with an open atmosphere for kids and their families to encourage creativity, learning, free play, and developing social skills. Now, 75 years and many generations of families later, Castro Valley Parent Nursery School (CVPNS) is preparing to honor its heritage by inviting parents, former students, staff, directors, and the community to celebrate with them this year. “We want to welcome back the previous directors and all our families for an open house that we are scheduling soon,” says CVPNS vice president Katie Burdett, whose husband graduated from CVPNS under director Jean Ericson. The couple currently have a daughter enrolled in the school. “I have two pictures of a classic VW Beetle on campus that was renovated and made play-friendly,” Burdett says. “One is an older picture with my see CVPNS on page 3

This year’s Rowell Ranch Rodeo Parade down Castro Valley Boulevard has been canceled. Still, the Rodeo itself and its other associated events will go as planned, officials announced this past Friday. Since 1981, the parade has been the kick-off to a week full of rodeo events leading up to the two-day professional contest, a community event that has taken place for more than 100 years in Castro Valley. In a statement, the Rowell Ranch Pro Rodeo association said the parade that traditionally takes place the weekend prior to the rodeo will not be held this year. The parade is expected to return in 2025 under the direction of the Rowell Ranch Rodeo committee, with new parade chairs Mel Speed and Ashley Strausburg at the helm. The Rotary Club of Castro Valley, which has coordinated the parade for more than 40 years, decided in January that they could no longer do so. “It is with heavy hearts that the see PARADE on page 11

Coach Papachristos Pens Autobiography By Linda Sandsmark

CASTRO VALLEY FORUM

egendary Castro Valley athletic coach Zack Papachristos’ autobiography, “Papachristos,” debuted late last month. The book details how he came to the U.S. as a young immigrant and eventually achieved the American Dream in California. “It took me three years to write it,” he says. “The reason I did is that my wife and I didn’t have any children, so this is a way for me to leave my legacy.” Coming from a wartorn area of Greece at age 11, Papachristos arrived in America knowing no English. He watched movies, repeating the dialogue under his breath, to learn to speak without an accent. His family eventually settled in Utah, where he graduated from high school and college. Always good at sports, Papachristos says the coaches he met in Utah inspired him. “I knew what I wanted to do since 10th grade, which was to be a PE teacher and athletic coach,” he says. While a PE major at the University of Utah, he recruited and coached so many intramural teams that he was given a key to the main gym. This solidified his decision to remain in coaching. He pursued that goal again after serving in the National Guard, moving to California, and working at places like Sunshine Biscuits and a “dude ranch.” Papachristos started teaching middle school in Newark and moved to the old Hayward High site while the new Canyon High (now Canyon Middle School) was built in Castro Valley.

He was so dedicated to his students that he took his golfing team to Ruby Hill, Sequoyah, and Las Positas courses because, he says, “You need to play prestigious courses to have any sort of success.” All in all, Papachristos taught and coached at Chabot from 1969 to 2018. He was voted California Community College Wrestling Coach of the Year six times and was chosen by colleagues as Wrestling Coach of the Decade for 197080. When he heard in 1996 that a majority of the athletic trophies previously displayed at Chabot had been discarded into dumpsters by new administrators, Papachristos raised $30,000 to begin construction of Chabot College Athletics Hall of Fame, to showcase the names and achievements of past and present athletes. “It was never about Zack, but about his team,” said Chabot’s head football coach Dr. Keith Calkins. s Valentines Day approaches, statistics reveal that online dating app activity increases. First appearing in 1995, online dating apps have soared in popularity from “cheesy” to “essential.” In fact, latest figures reveal that over 30% of couples get started on a dating app and of those who connect, close to 70% end up in a relationship. While Match.com produced the first dating app, in 2012 Tinder changed the game by adding the “swipe left – swipe right” feature that has

not only become mainstream on dating apps but has become part of our vernacular. Ironically, selling a home is very similar to online dating. Just like dating apps, online real estate portals also see an increase in traffic heading into February. Just like dating apps, many real estate apps also have the ability to like properties that fit your criteria and dismiss those that do not. Buyer habits have changed considerably with the advent of online real estate portals like Realtor.com, Homes.com and Zillow. Instead of getting in their cars and heading out looking for open homes,

Repot Cymbidiums

CROSSWORD PUZZLE ANSWERS

If your cymbidium orchids are bulging out of their containers, repot them from now until the end of June. Remove the old bark, discard dead roots and rotted bulbs, and transfer the entire plant into a larger container filled with cymbidium mix or bark. You can also split up the plant into groups of three to five bulbs with leaves and repot each division individually.

Senior Scam Calls on the Rise By Josie de la Torre

SPECIAL TO THE FORUM

Last year, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) received 45 reports of scammers directly targeting people over 50 or older. Parade: Will Be Brought Back in 2025

Thanks for RRR Parade’s Many Years Dear Castro Valley Community, For many years the Rowell Ranch Rodeo Parade has provided entertainment for the community and support for the Rowell Ranch Rodeo — a more than 100-year tradition that will continue its rich history of cowboy can do, riding and showmanship. The RRR Parade was originally started in Hayward by Harry and Maggie Rowell and subsequently the Hayward Rotary Club took on the responsibility of presenting the parade in downtown Hayward. In 1981 the parade was brought to Castro Valley by the Rotary Club of Castro Valley at the hands of Dwight Perry and his family (wife, Barbara and daughter, Joyce) as well as, Cliff Sherwood, Dale Yearian, Dave and Bill Fitcher, and their families and many, many others along the way. The event would not have succeeded without the dedication of folks like Linda Parker (who wrangled entries for more than 30 years), Bruce Johnson, Dan Willits, Randy Vanderbilt, Mel Speed (of the Music Company) and the families and circle of friends and employees of these folks, all of whom carried the heavy lifting on the day of the event. To the local youth sports organizations, schools, businesses, politicians, civic and service clubs, along with private citizens, thank you. All of you made your marks along Castro Valley Boulevard on parade day. To the generous sponsors and underwriters who helped fund this event year after year; Redwood Christian Schools, Carol Bigelow, Pete’s Hardware, Eden Medical Center, Castro Valley Hayward Storage, Comfort Inn, Supervisor Nate Miley, Classy Canine’s

Wiggle Rumps, Nixxit Junk Removal, and so many more, your contributions have been invaluable. The RRR Parade simply would not have been possible without these generous benefactors. Of course, we would be remiss to not acknowledge our friends at East Bay Publishing, who have helped tell our event stories for years. We are also immensely grateful to the public safety, transportation, and health agencies (Alameda County Sherriff’s Office, BART, CVSAN, California Highway Patrol – Golden Gate Division, Alameda County Public Works, the MAC Board, Supervisor Miley, and the Alameda County Fire Department) that ensured the safety, sanitation, and smooth flow of traffic during our parades. Castro Valley has a rich history of ranching and in many ways still holds much of its cowboy culture of fierce independence and “can do” work ethic. Over the years, the RRR Parade has provided a place for that culture to shine and bring our community together in a way that words cannot fully capture. The Club is grateful to have provided an event that has been a source of joy, unity, and civic pride for Castro Valley residents. While we may be bidding farewell to this chapter of our club, we look forward to continuing our mission of “Service Above Self”. The club remains committed to Castro Valley, and we invite you to join us on any Tuesday for lunch at Redwood Canyon Golf Course at Noon. Details of our meetings can be found at www.castrovalleyrotary.org See you at the Rowell Ranch Rodeo in May! –Christian Carr, President 2023-2024 CV Rotary Club

I Urge You to Elect Jennifer Esteen One may agree that Nate Miley has helped improve some aspects of life in our unincorporated area during his 24 years as a supervisor. What is most troubling are the decisions he has made in the past 3 years that have been self-serving and negatively impacted unincorporated residents! In addition to an overview of some of Miley’s practices in an article in the Davisvanguard (davisvanguard.org), his recent (1) creation of district boundaries in 2021– splitting the City of Pleasanton (separating it from the rest of the Tri-Valley) and dividing the unincorporated areas; (2) endorsing the ousted Sheriff Ahern in the last election when AC residents had lost confidence in the sheriff; (3) failure to implement the creations of a the Sheriff Oversight Commission and an Independent Redistricting Commission, as well as an Ethics Policy, further demonstrate his lack of ethics and commitment to the residents. Finally we have a resident of our unincorporated area (Ashland) –JENNIFER ES-

TEEN—who can provide us with leadership and progress. Her experience on the Eden MAC, Vice President of the Alameda Health Council (managing a $1 billion budget) and former VP of organizing for SEIU 1021 (Service Employees International Union), coupled with her work as a psychiatric nurse make her the best candidate to lead us through these difficult times of pandemics, unhoused and lawlessness. Wilson Riles, who served with Miley on the Oakland City Council endorses Esteen and states “Many more organizations and individuals other than me, have recognized Jennifer’s spirit, talent and intelligence, and are supporting her in this effort against a deeply entrenched incumbent. As a former elected official, I know how easy it can be to overstay one’s usefulness.” I urge you to use the power of your vote March 5th to elect Jennifer Esteen! –Penelope Anne Hughes, Castro Valley

Marcia Voge

September 8, 1946 ~January 19th, 2024 Our family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Marcia Voge, 77, on January 19th after a tough battle with dementia.

Marcia, known also as “Tia” by her family, was born on September 8, 1946 to Robert and Evelyn Couch in Oakland. A long-time employee at the Oakland Airport for almost 50 years, Marcia retired in 2020 and enjoyed her time surrounded by her family and her two cats. Marcia was an avid sports enthusiast and loved cheering on Bay Area sports teams especially the San Francisco 49ers. Marcia was very close to her family and a huge part of their everyday lives from the big celebrations to attending school events and soccer games. Marcia was beautiful inside and out and showered everyone she met with love and kindness.

Survived by her two sons John and Chris, sister Pam and brother-in-law Mitch, grandchildren Leland and Aria, nephews Jason, Josh and niece Jill. Marcia was predeceased by her parents Robert and Evelyn. No services will be held, as Marcia requested a small family gathering. She is interred at Chapel of the Chimes alongside her parents.

Tia, you brought joy to all who had the privilege of knowing you. You will be deeply missed. Rest in peace and know our hearts will always be with you. FD 1168 CR49

“Without the support of our school district and our super-dedicated parent coaches, the team would not be this successful,” said CV Science President and Founder Garland Dughi. “Science Olympiad is more than a competition, it’s the intentional building of a community of learners and science leaders. Our teams spend countless hours building and studying while juggling a full academic load, sports and other clubs. But they’re here because of their curiosity and desire to learn.” These students will also host an Elementary School Science Olympiad competition aimed at 4th and 5th graders on March 16th at Canyon. Those participating included Avery Bland (volleyball), who committed to Ohlone College after leading the Varsity Girls team to a successful season with an 11-1 win-loss league record and a 20-10 overall record. Cassidy Cu (acrosports) will attend the University of Oregon as part of their acrobatics and tumbling program as a flyer. She’ll be studying Business with a concentration in Marketing. Katrina (Katie) Longoria (softball) had a .400 batting average and was recruited by West Virginia Wesleyan College to their softball program.
