The holiday season is a time for joy, family, and of course, shopping. But as we rush to find the perfect gifts for our loved ones, it’s important to remember the impact our spending decisions have on our communities. Shopping locally and patronizing Castro Valley businesses owned and operated by community members is a powerful way to support your neighbors, strengthen the local economy, and create a more vibrant and sustainable place to live. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), every dollar spent at a local business generates an average of $57 in local economic activity, compared to just $23 when spent at a chain store. This is because local businesses tend to reinvest their profits in the community, creating jobs, paying taxes, and supporting other local businesses. In fact, small businesses create 7 out of every 10 new jobs in the United States. Community Spirit and Social Connections Shopping in Castro Valley is not just about economics; it’s also about building community. Local businesses are often the heart of their neighborhoods, providing places to gather, socialize, and connect with one another. They sponsor local events, support local charities, and employ people from the community. see HOLIDAYS on page 7

Sutter Names Inaugural Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer By Michael Singer

CASTRO VALLEY FORUM

In a groundbreaking move, Sutter Health named Dana Beckton as its first-ever Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer (CDIO) last week. The appointment marks a significant step in fortifying and prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at the healthcare provider as well as fostering a more diverse and inclusive healthcare environment within the California-based integrated health system. Beckton, who will be an integral member of Sutter’s Executive Leadership Team, is set to spearhead the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategy, working directly with

to me. I’ve touched on this concept before, but it seemed important enough that I wanted to dedicate a whole article to it. Radical responsibility essentially says that you are responsible for everything that happens to you in your life. This goes deeper than normal responsibility. We understand that others may not respond well when we have been rude. However, radical responsibility goes deeper and even says that the health diagnosis, unexpected divorce, or car accident were also somehow your responsibility. To be completely transparent, I haven’t fully accepted this concept. It’s a really difficult pill to swallow. However, whenever I’ve been in a difficult situation, whether personal or professional, I felt like I could get my feet on something solid enough to start standing back up again because of this concept. see KOO on back page

CV Christmas Tree Lighting More than 300 people showed up in the Castro Village Shopping Center last Friday to see the annual Christmas Tree Lighting. The event was a tradition in the village for two decades in the 1950s and 60s. The community brought it back in 2016, and it has been a perennial favorite for families ever since. The event featured performances from the Castro Valley School of Music, the Castro Valley Performing Arts Center Dancers, and the Castro Valley High School Madrigals Choir. The ceremony also included the infamous Grinch trying to steal Christmas away only to be stopped by Alameda County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Santa himself. The evening was also a chance for families to take photos with Santa, his elves, and even the Grinch, who changed his ways and welcomed the holiday spirit into town. ‫בה‬

prevent hundreds of dollars in potential damage. It’s always best to catch potential issues BEFORE they cause harm. For an extra fee, some roof inspection companies will also clean your gutters. If you need new gutters, beat the rush and do it now. Make sure your downspouts have diverters which carry water away from your home and ensure nothing on the ground traps water or directs it towards your dwelling. Trim vegetation away from the house. If you have tree branches, bushes or shrubs touching your home, trim them back before the storms come. Tree branches can do extensive damage, especially to roofs, and vegetation close to the walls will trap moisture. Check weather seals. Make sure your doors have adequate weather seals and door sweeps to close off all gaps. Caulk all gaps around windows. Close the fireplace damper. Keep flashlights handy. You never know when weather might knock out local power – keep charged flashlights handy in case. Beat the season and while others are panicking, you will be snug and warm in your fully prepared home.

A gas-powered portable generator can help keep the lights on in the event of a power outage.

How to Help Ease Your Winter Blues

I

By Jim Miller

SPECIAL TO THE FORUM

f you get depressed in the winter but feel better in spring and summer, you may indeed have seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, a wintertime depression that affects roughly 5 percent of Americans. In most cases, SAD is related to the loss of sunlight in the winter months. Reduced sunlight can upset natural sleepwake cycles and other circadian rhythms that can affect the body. It can also cause a drop in the brain chemical serotonin, which affects mood, and can increase the levels of the hormone melatonin, which can make you feel more tired and lethargic. If you think you may have SAD, a trip to your doctor’s office is the best way to diagnose it or you can take a SAD “self-assessment” test at the Center for Environmental Therapeutics website at CET.org/assessments. If you find that you have SAD, here are several treatment options and remedies that can help. Light therapy: The most effective treatment for SAD is sitting in front of a specialized light therapy box for 20 to 30 minutes a day, within the first hour of waking up in the morning. Light therapy mimics outdoor light to cause a change in brain chemicals linked to mood. While you can buy a light box without a prescription, it’s best to use it under the guidance of a health care provider and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Most health insurance plans do not cover the cost. The best light therapy lamps provide 10,000 lux of illumination, many times stronger than typical indoor light, and have a diffuser screen that filters out ultraviolet rays and projects downward toward the eyes. Some top-rated light therapy products include the Carex Day-Light Classic Plus Bright Lamp ($145); Northern Light Technology Boxelite-OS ($205); and the budget friendly Verilux HappyLight Luxe ($70), all of which are available at Amazon.com. Cognitive behavioral therapy: Even though SAD is considered to be a biological problem, identifying and changing thought and behavior patterns can help alleviate symptoms too. To help you with this, choose a therapist who specializes in cognitive behavioral therapy and who has experience in treating SAD. To locate someone in your area, Psychology Today offers a search tool at PsychologyToday.com/us/ therapists/cognitive-behavioral-cbt. see BLUES on back page

Koo: Truth

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

continued from page 2 The mental flip I had to make was believing this challenge was teaching me a critical lesson. I didn’t learn to care for myself until I dated a girl who took advantage of my kindness. I didn’t start taking care of my health and back until I couldn’t walk. As I saw this truth in my own life, I also started seeing it in other success stories. It wasn’t until my dad got his cancer diagnosis that he cleaned up his diet. I had a mentor who used to sell drugs, and it wasn’t until he got shot in the head and lived that he did everything he could to spread good in the world.
