CANYON MIDDLE SCHOOL

2023

Year in Review BY MICHAEL SINGER More new businesses and community engagement opportunities opened in Castro Valley in 2023 than in years past. We gathered as a community to celebrate the Rowell Ranch Rodeo, the Fall Festival, the Light Parade, and the 70th anniversary of the Christmas tree lighting in the Village. This year was also a time of great individual contributions and achievements. Musicians, actors, dancers, filmmakers, and artists of all disciplines inspired us to dream big and get loud! As a community, Castro Valley was not shy about voicing its opinion. We openly discussed the possibility of Castro Valley becoming an official city, the Central Business District Specific Plan, and how to fix the roads that washed out in the storms. Here’s a monthly breakdown of the major stories that the Castro Valley Forum brought to you:

Sports Field Project to be Reviewed By Michael Singer

CASTRO VALLEY FORUM

The $14 million upgrade to the sports fields at Canyon Middle School has a few environmental issues to monitor as construction is scheduled to begin in February 2024, according to a report issued this month. At its December 14 meeting, the Castro Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) Board of Trustees heard a presentation that identified six potential items to keep an eye on while the field north of the campus is renovated. Under state law, public agencies must analyze and disclose the environmental impacts of projects that physically affect the environment. Greg Goodfellow with Placeworks, who was hired to manage this project and the sports field project at Creekside Middle School, said the mitigation study of the project presented must be certified by CVUSD before project approval. “Given the size of this project, we’re going to have to assume that some of these impacts will be unavoidable,” Goodfellow said. “And that takes it one step further, whereas an environmental impact report would simply require alternatives to the project.” The six items include the potential dust created during construction, a survey of birds nesting in nearby trees, and the construction of buffers near active nests. If any were found, see FIELD on back page

Jenn’s Cupcakes Marks $30K In Donations for Community By Michael Singer

CASTRO VALLEY FORUM

After nearly 10 years in business, Jenn’s Cupcakes has made and sold a lot of tasty treats. Many of those sales were made for fundraising purposes. So, it shocked founder Jenn DeJanes and her business partners that the homegrown business recently hit the $30,000 mark in the amount donated straight to the Castro Valley community. “I’ve always been involved with my kid’s schools, and I love giving back,” DeJanes told the Forum. “Every time we’re hired for a fundraising event, we donate 20 percent of what we sell. By the end of the night, that group has a check in its hands.” DeJanes and her three other PHOTO COURTESY OF CATHY BRESLOW / BRESLOW IMAGING cupcake makers have been busy in 2023 with $8,700 in SWEET SUCCESS: Jenn’s Cupcakes founder Jenn donations, including $1,500 for DeJanes (right) and her business partners recently the Castro Valley High School hit the $30,000 fundraising mark in the amount donated straight to the Castro Valley community. Wheelie Kind: Sheriff’s Office Donates Bike Following Theft A 13-year-old boy from Castro Valley received the gift of kindness and a new bike last week after being scammed out of $497 to buy a used Mafia Bomma bicycle designed for all-around wheelie tricks. On November 20, Alameda County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) Deputy Silvia with the community response team responded to a report of a theft at the corner of Redwood Road and Castro Valley Boulevard. There, she met Nathan (his last name withheld because he is a minor), who said he had arranged a purchase of the sought-after bike using the

chores and birthday money and that his hopes of finally owning the popular trick bike were crushed. Seeing Nathan’s disappointment and unable to catch the scammer, Deputy Silvia and ACSO staff worked with Baylands Bicycles Shop in Fremont to get a new Bomma bike at below cost so it could be donated to Nathan. Nathan and his mom were recently called to the Sherrif’s Office Eden Substation, where Deputy Silvia Deputy Silvia and several other OfferUp website. Link Between Celiac Disease And Restless Legs Syndrome Dear Dr. Roach, Are you aware of any correlation between celiac disease and restless legs syndrome (RLS)? My 72-yearold husband has had RLS for decades. He currently takes gabapentin and pramipexole, but still has symptoms. Plus, he has periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), which occurs while he’s asleep. He isn’t aware of it, but it can keep me awake; we sleep in separate beds when it gets bad.

Five Fitness Tips for Every Exercise By Mitch Rothbardt

SPECIAL TO THE FORUM

Merry Christmas! I know it was a few days ago, but my Christmas wish is for everyone to understand how to do every single exercise. That’s not too much to ask, is it? It sounds like a lot, but it’s not as hard as it seems. Like many things, there are foundational principles that apply to every exercise, and the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious thing about that is that those principles also apply to how you should move in real-life! (IRL for the kids out there.) Here are five principles for every exercise. Know what your shoulders and hips should be doing. Your shoulders and hips are either stabilizing or moving during every exercise (there’s some exceptions, but very few). Understanding their function is crucial to getting the most out of any exercise because how they move and/or stabilize determines nearly everything about how the rest of you moves and/or stabilizes. Feel it in your back? Watch your hips. Feel it in your neck? Watch

your shoulders. The list goes on and on. (I know this is a complicated concept. Let me know what questions you have about it.) Get tall. I don’t care how tall you actually are, get yourself into a tall position whether you’re standing, sitting, lying, or anything else. You do that by making your spine as long as possible. Also, don’t hunch and always keep your head up! This will put your shoulders in a good position, and if you don’t know how important that is, refer to #1. Engage your core. DO NOT do this by sucking your belly in. Read that again. And again. Yes, it’s that important. Here’s how you do it. Stand up tall (#2) and push your fingers into each side of your belly. Use your abs to push your fingers out. Feel that pressure and tightness wrapping around your midsection? That’s what an engaged core feels like. And it also helps keep your shoulders in a good position (there’s #1 again!)

The North Valley Yokuts Tribe has also agreed on a sensitivity training session before construction begins so that crews understand what to look for during construction, how to look for cultural items, and who to call if something is uncovered. “This is very sensitive land. This entire area is part of all Ohlone language groups that stretches down to Southern San Jose, and we respect that,” Goodman said.

The public has until Tuesday, January 9, 2024, to make comments on the report. Construction of the proposed project is expected to last one year, ending in January 2025. The 8.65-acre project includes replacing the grass with a synthetic turf field, adding a scoreboard, bleachers, a batting cage, two new backstops, a bullpen, and new fences. New stairs and accessible pathways with 14 pole-mounted lights with LED fixtures would also be added, and the temporary restroom would be replaced with a permanent facility.
