DR. JONATHAN SPIRO INTERIM PRESIDENT CASTLETON UNIVERSITY Dr. Jonathan Spiro began serving as interim president of Castleton University in June 2020.

Dr. Spiro provides a wealth of administrative and education experience, having served in a variety of academic posts since his arrival at Castleton in 2002. During his time at Castleton, he has served as interim provost, academic dean, dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, and chair of the Department of History, Geography, Economics, and Political Science.

As a professor, Dr. Spiro was the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award for his courses on history, politics, race, slavery, immigration, the ancient Maya, and the nature-nurture debate. As a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, he twice won the “Distinguished Teacher” award.

Dr. Spiro is known nationally as a leading authority on the eugenics movement and authored the critically acclaimed book “Defending the Master Race: Conservation, Eugenics, and the Legacy of Madison Grant.”

He is frequently called upon by national media, including The Atlantic and The New York Times, for his perspective on race and nationalism.

Dr. Spiro holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Berkeley, a master’s degree in American Studies from Pepperdine University in Malibu, and a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of California, Los Angeles.

SOPHIE ZDATNY VERMONT STATE COLLEGES SYSTEM CHANCELLOR Chancellor Zdatny joined the Vermont State Colleges System as associate general counsel in 2014 and became the general counsel in January 2017. She was first appointed as interim chancellor and then as chancellor of the Vermont State Colleges System in the summer of 2020. She lives in Essex Junction, Vermont, with her husband. She has two adult children, a daughter in Newton, Massachusetts, and a son in London, England.

Zdatny holds a Juris Doctor from West Virginia University’s College of Law and a bachelor's degree from Wellesley College.

CHIDINMA EZUGWU ‘19 GUEST SPEAKER Chidinma Ezugwu graduated from Castleton University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics summa cum laude. She minored in statistics and economics and received the Academic Excellence award in mathematics in 2019. She served Castleton in many roles including senior class treasurer, vice-president of Academics for the Student Government Association, president of the Castleton chapter of Phi Eta Sigma honor society, and member of Sigma Zeta national science and mathematics honor society. Originally from Nigeria, Ezugwu was very active in Castleton’s international student community, serving as the teaching assistant for the First-Year International Student Seminar and International Student Orientation Leader. As a member of the President’s Student Advisory Council and the Council on Inclusive Excellence, she was a strong voice for students at all levels of the University. The Student Government Association awarded her the Distinguished Service Award in 2018 and named her the Outstanding International Student in 2019. Ezugwu received Castleton’s highest student honor, the Caroline Woodruff Award, in 2019 for her leadership and dedication to the University.

Ezugwu recently earned her Master of Science in Mathematics with a specialization in statistics and operations research from Southern Illinois University where she was the Matthew Samsel Graduate Fellow in Mathematics and Statistics.

ACADEMIC REGALIA Castleton’s regalia is a “Greenweaver” product made from an eco-friendly fabric. The academic costume consists of a cap, gown, and hood. The cap can be the hard, Oxford type mortarboard, or the soft, beret-like Cambridge model. Castleton’s presidential gown and cap were presented to former President Harold Abel in 1970 by the Student Association. The ceremonial office of mace bearer derives from medieval times when the mace was held ready to protect a dignitary. Castleton’s mace was crafted by Michael Coffey, a renowned Vermont woodworker, and was given to the university in 1979 by the Castleton alumni of southeastern Vermont.

The bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves. The modern master’s gown is black with full-length sleeves closed at the wrist. The doctor’s gown is quite elaborate, with front velvet paneling and full sleeves with velvet sleeve bars. BRIEF HISTORY OF CASTLETON Castleton’s roots go back to October 15, 1787, when the General Assembly of the State of Vermont chartered the Rutland County Grammar School. In early America a grammar school was the first step in higher education, a link between one-room schools and the few colleges in New England. Of institutions that are colleges or universities today, Castleton is the oldest in Vermont and the 18th in the nation.

The village of Castleton was an intellectual center. The first medical college in Vermont was founded here in 1818 and lasted until 1862. In that time the school conferred some 1400 medical degrees, more than any other New England medical school. Students came from throughout the United States, from Canada, and from distant lands including France, Cuba, Ireland, and Brazil.

Throughout the 19th century, the school in Castleton evolved and changed names to meet the needs of society. In 1867 the State Normal School was founded, and for a few years it was housed entirely in the old Medical College building and shared faculty with the Castleton Seminary. Normal school is a term based on the French école normal, a school to prepare teachers. For thirty years, Abel Leavenworth, a Civil War hero, and son Philip Leavenworth were principals of the State Normal School. In 1912 the State of Vermont purchased the property.

Castleton entered a Golden Age in the 1920s and 1930s under the leadership of Principal Caroline Woodruff. She helped save the school after the Old Seminary building burned in January 1924. Quoting the book of Haggai, she promised, “And the glory of the latter house shall be greater than that of the former.” Woodruff modernized the curriculum, hired excellent staff, and exposed her students to the wider world through guest speakers, who included Robert Frost, Helen Keller, and Norman Rockwell. She is still the only Vermonter to be president of the National Education Association.

In 1947 the Normal School became Castleton Teachers College. With increased enrollment from men, intercollegiate athletics began in the 1950s, and by the early1960s, Castleton was a national power in small college men’s soccer.

In 1962, Castleton became a state college and a member of the newly formed Vermont State Colleges. Castleton grew dramatically during this time in enrollment and in construction of buildings. A generation of faculty educated at major universities brought new perspectives to the classroom.

On July 23, 2015, the Vermont State Colleges System Board of Trustees unanimously approved modernizing the name to Castleton University to better reflect the more than a decade of growth and strategic planning that has transformed the campus.
