CASTLETONSPORTS.COM Last Time Out: Castleton The Spartans saw their four-game win streak come to an end with a 35-21 loss to Becker on Saturday. Castleton fell behind 14-0 in the second quarter but got a touchdown right before the half to trail just 14-7. The Spartans got the ball out of the break and marched down to the one-yard line but were stuffed on fourth down. The Hawks took over and eventually added to their lead late in the third quarter for a 21-7 lead. They picked off a pass on the next possession and a touchdown pushed it to 28-7. Becker stretched their lead to 35-7 early in the fourth quarter before two late touchdowns by Moe Harris and Jordan Goodrich provided the 35-21 final. Harris rushed for 161 yards and one touchdown in the loss.

Last Time Out: Norwich In a battle of undefeated conference teams, Norwich outlasted Husson 20-17 to improve to 6-0 in the ECFC last Saturday.

The Eagles actually got on the board first, tackling the running back in the endzone for a safety late in the first quarter.

However, the Cadets responded with a touchdown just one minute into the second quarter for the 7-2 lead. Wesley Medeiros then connected on a 40-yard field goal for a 10-2 advantage seven minutes later. Husson came back with a long touchdown run and converted on the two-point conversion to tie it 10-10. A touchdown before the half put Norwich back in front, 17-10. No one scored again until the fourth quarter when a field goal gave the Cadets a 20-10 advantage.

The Eagles responded with 3:52 left to cut the deficit to 20-17, but the team’s onside kick was unsuccessful and Norwich held on for the win.

Recent History Castleton has won two of the past three meetings with Norwich, but is just 2-4 overall against the Cadets and 0-3 in Spartan Stadium. Last season the Spartans claimed the Maple Sap Bucket trophy with a 48-28 victory. Castleton led 21-0 after the first quarter and extended its leads to 34-0 midway through the second quarter. The Cadets did pull within 18, 46-28, late in the third quarter but couldn’t get any closer. George Busharis threw for 317 yards and the defense had a school record six interceptions. Norwich did pick off Busharis four times and Pierre Noel had six catches for 157 yards and one score.

Scouting the Spartans Offense: Castleton enter the game averaging 26.4 points and 363 yards per game this year, mixing the run with the pass very well. Quarterback George Busharis has completed 62.5 percent of this passes with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions while averaging 219.6 yards per game. Soren Pelz-Walsh leads the team with 54 receptions for 874 yards and seven touchdowns while Makai Hawkins has 40 catches for 447 yards and one score. Jordan Goodrich has 20 receptions from his tight end position. Moe Harris leads the rushing attack, averaging 103.3 yards per game with 13 rushing touchdowns, and Corey Brimmer has added four scores.

Defense: The Spartans gave up 30+ points for the second time in three games last Saturday and are allowing 22.1 points per game this year. They are giving up 214.9 yards through the air, the most in the conference. Castleton does lead the ECFC with 14 interceptions and also has 16 sacks. Tyler Higley leads the ECFC with six interceptions and 11 passes defended while Mark Alberque has three interceptions and Derek McAdoo has two. Scouting the Cadets Offense: Norwich had won six straight games behind a balanced offense attack averaging 25.1 points per game this year. In six ECFC games they are averaging 31.3 points and 39.0 yards per game, both good for third in the conference. Philippe Bazinet has come on strong as of late and is averaging 181.2 yards per game with eight touchdowns and zero interceptions in conference play, and 176.7 with eight touchdowns and four picks overall. His primary target has been Pierre Noel, who has 47 catches for 600 yards and four touchdowns. Zach Allen, meanwhile has 27 receptions for 457 yards and three scores.

19.8 Quincy Williams leads the rushing attack with 178.2 83.0 yards per game and seven touchdowns 138.2 while Bazinet has 427 rushing yards and two 316.4 touchdowns.

2.0 Defense: The Cadets are giving up 19.8 points 1.2 per game overall but boast the best defense in ECFC action, allowing just 12.0 points per game and 285.0 yards per game. In six conference games they have only allowed more than 17 points once while recording 11 interceptions and 14 sacks, with 18 sacks total on the year. Benjamin Hummer leads the team with 53 tackles while Jake Apthorpe has impressed with 44 tackles, 6.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for a loss. Joshua Johnson and Michael O’Neill are tied for the team lead with three interceptions apiece as six different players have an interception.

Rushing Into History After recording 161 rushing yards last weekend, freshman Moe Harris set a new Castleton single-season rushing record of 930 yards. He surpassed Tyler Carpenter ’12, who rushed for 839 yards and 13 touchdowns back in 2009.

Harris currently ranks third among all freshmen running backs in rushing yards per game (103.3) and is tied for first in touchdowns (13).

Senior Day Today Castleton will honor 21 seniors who are playing in their final home regular season contest today: George Busharis, Cyle Machia, Eric Mimnaugh, Derek McAdoo, Justin Picou, Leo Audy, Tony Argillander, Jonah Taylor, Isaac Bendavid, Nate Gilman, James Stillings, Jordan Tolar, Steven Ladka, Andrew Breting, Jordan Goodrich, Mitch Bouton, Brett Denning, Luke Quesnell, Matt Keir and Jeremy Stevens. This group has won a program-record 20 games over their four seasons, including the program’s first ever back-to-back winning seasons in 2014 and 2015. They’ve gone 15-12 in the ECFC and are looking for their third season with five wins in conference play.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Nas Sinkfield-Shelton, Becker (So, QB - New Rochelle, N.Y.) Sophomore quarterback Nas Sinkfield-Shelton helped lead the Hawks to 562 yards of total offense in a 35-21 victory over Castleton on Saturday. Sinkfield-Shelton threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns while rushing six times for 37 yards.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Michael Sinto, Anna Maria (Jr, LB - Long Beach, N.Y.) Sinto recorded a game-high 15 tackles, 4.5 of which were for a loss, in the AMCATS 24-20 win against Gallaudet. Sinto recorded two of his tackles on a crucial defensive stand for Anna Maria in which the team forced Gallaudet into a three-and-out on their final drive. Sinto led an AMCAT unit that held the Bison to just 124 yards of total offense.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK Wesley Medeiros, Norwich (Jr., K - Gilford, N.H.) Junior kicker Wesley Medeiros was another key player that lifted Norwich University to a 20-17 win over Husson University to improve 6-0 in the league. Medeiros would kick a pair of field goals from 32 and 40 yards out through the uprights along with two points after attempts for the Cadets’ victory. Medeiros also punted five times for 146 yard, averaging 29.2 yards in the game with a long of 43 yards landing inside the 20.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Moe Harris, Castleton (Fr., RB - Pine Hill, N.J.) Moe Harris surpassed 100 yards rushing for the fifth time this season and totaled over 200 all-purpose yards in Castleton?s 35-21 loss to Becker. The freshman averaged 6.0 yards per carry, rushing 27 times for 161 yards and a touchdown while also catching one pass for nine yards and recording 68 kickoff return yards.
