Spring is one of the busiest times on the Castleton University campus. In March, we usually come together for the Theater Department’s musical. In late April, we appreciate student work at the annual Scholars Celebration and we prepare for Commencement. In May, the big white tent goes up just outside of the Castleton Pavilion, and our Facilities Crew is hard at work to make our campus look beautiful after a long winter. Under normal circumstances this is my favorite time of year, when the excitement and anticipation of what’s to come are palpable. But this year is different. This past March, we decided to transition to the online delivery of courses to ensure the safety of our students due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Within a matter of days, students were asked to leave the residence halls and say goodbye to their friends. While we initially hoped to be able to return to campus and resume in-person learning in mid-April, it soon became clear that this was not a viable option. While all of this was happening, we had to make the difficult decision to postpone our Commencement to next spring. Commencement is the highlight of the academic year for our seniors, and we knew this decision would be disappointing for everyone – but especially for them, who saw their senior year upended and transformed before their eyes. We miss all of our students, but the senior class especially tugs at my heartstrings. As sophomores, they welcomed me to Castleton University with open arms, and we have grown here, together. We are all sad that we cannot be together in person to recognize their accomplishments and contributions to our community. To the Class of 2020: We often tell students to make a difference here before they go out and make a difference in the world. You have done just that. Every aspect of life at Castleton that you have touched – from academics to athletics, student life, and more – is better as a result of your time and dedication. You were instrumental in getting free skiing and riding at Pico Resort, expanding recreational opportunities for our students. You have helped grow our Club Sports from five to more than 20 offerings and led the unprecedented expansion of our on-campus clubs and activities, like the Active Minds Club. You helped guide your team to athletics championships. You’ve conducted innovative research across the globe, studied abroad, and helped those who are struggling in underdeveloped parts of the world access high-quality healthcare. You are leaving a lasting legacy at Castleton University. In these unprecedented times, surrounded by uncertainty, I know one thing for sure: Together, you will change the world. This magazine is dedicated to you. In its pages, you’ll find stories that highlight the past four years at Castleton and tributes to all the good you have done here.

The Castleton Way Isn’t Canceled In late-February, life at Castleton University was by all means normal. Theater students were practicing for the spring musical, spring sports teams were preparing for the season ahead, reporters and editors for The Spartan were excited for their annual conference in New York City, and Commencement planning was well underway. Within a matter of days, Coronavirus upended life at Castleton. When reports of isolated cases of COVID-19 began in our country, University officials promptly began making arrangements for students studying abroad to return home. They asked faculty to bolster their use of Canvas, our online learning software, in the unlikely event an alternative academic delivery method was necessary. By mid-March, the Vermont State Colleges System leadership made the difficult decision to transition courses to online learning, with the hope of students returning to campus after spring break in April. For the safety of the entire community, Castleton canceled or postponed all on-campus events, encouraged employees to work from home, and students were told they would not be coming back to campus this spring, except to collect their belongings. Students experienced a variety of emotions upon learning that their time at Castleton was being cut short, especially seniors whose Commencement ceremony was postponed to next spring. 4

The Castleton family has found unique ways to come together and support one another from afar. Even when many miles apart, The Castleton Way shines through. When you ask students what The Castleton Way is, you’ll likely hear the two most tangible examples: holding the door for others and the smiles you see on people’s faces as you walk across campus. These two basic, yet meaningful, acts are small pieces of a bigger idea. At its core, The Castleton Way is the love we have for the University and one another. It’s the way we miss moonlit walks from the library after a long night of studying. It’s remembering the times you’ve sat in a professor’s office and knowing that you’ve never been just a number to them. It’s the staff at Coffee Cottage or Fireside getting your order ready when you walk in because they know your order by heart. It’s the laughs you share with friends who are more like family and all of the memories you’ve made along the way. In these unprecedented times, The Castleton Way is how we miss each other. It’s the way we’re using technology like Zoom and FaceTime to remain connected. It’s the way that our faculty are holding virtual open office hours for students who just want to check in and chat. It’s the way our Wellness Center is finding innovative ways to meaningfully connect with students who are struggling during this time. It’s the way we look forward to the time we’ll be together again.
Dear Castleton Seniors: The time has come for the hardest part of this job – saying good-bye. The end of any school year is hectic. Teachers and students trying to finish all their work so they can scatter for the summer. But, for seniors, the end of a school year is different. Usually, there are ceremonies and practices and parties and relatives. Instead of returning to the familiar routine, each embarks down a new path. The events of this year have upended all our lives. So, before you head off on new adventures, I wanted to catch your attention one last time. I sat down to write this letter several times and ended up erasing what I had written. I don’t want to have to say the words, but I know it is time for leave-taking. Usually, I handle this part of the job quite well. A hearty handshake, a pat on the back, and a kick in the butt . . . and it’s over until the new group comes in the fall. This time, however, it is different. I have to bid farewell to so many who have become integral parts of my life, and I (who am never at a loss for words) find it difficult to choose just the right ones. You have afforded me the rare privilege of sharing in your growth from the unsure kids I met at orientation, in English Comp or Touchstones, in Skills and Drills, or just around campus to the poised and confident young adults you are today. There have been challenges (way too many to go into detail here), and you have faced them all with dignity and courage. You have learned something about yourselves at every turn, and I have witnessed extraordinary transformations in each and every one of you. I am so proud of this group! In addition, many of you have given me two wonderful gifts – your friendship and your trust. These I will treasure always. I can say without hesitation that Castleton in particular, and the world in general, are better places because of you. I am honored to call you my friends. If I were a wealthy man, I could shower you with riches. But, alas, I am not. As a rule, I often send students out into the world with a blessing as they make they begin their post-college lives: May the road rise up to meet you May the wind be always at your backs. May the sun shine warm upon your face, And the rain fall soft upon your field. And, until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of His hand. Because of the abrupt end to your Castleton experience, however, I thought you might need something more as you set off on new adventures: And, you to whom adversity has dealt a mortal blow, With disappointments strewn before you everywhere you go. Turn to and put out all the strength of arm and heart and brain, And, like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again. Rise again! Rise again! Though your heart it be broken and life about to end. Arts Dear Class of 2020, Though I’ve only had the pleasure of knowing you since October, I feel truly blessed to have been able to experience your growth, creativity, and drive this year. You are an exemplary group of seniors. You made me feel welcome in my new position, you spoke up about the things you liked and the changes you wanted, and you made the Fine Arts Center a brighter and more interesting place each time you walked into it. Learning your names, your interests, and your artistic and academic goals was a delight, and your class has left an indelible mark on my time here at Castleton. The professors in the Fine Arts Center sing your praises day in and day out, even if some of them are a little hard on you in class. I got to know you all through our interactions in the hallways and offices, but hearing your professors rave about your talent and drive gave me a deeper understanding of the dedicated artists and students you all are. It’s hard not seeing you every day, and it’s harder knowing we won’t be able to congratulate you in person, but please know that your professors and I are overwhelmed by your successes and that it has been an honor to witness them. Your presence in the Fine Arts Center is irreplaceable, and we will miss you all dearly when you graduate. I am forever amazed by the incredible leadership you have exhibited in the arts; the music ensembles, dance performances, theater productions, and the Christine Price Gallery will not be the same without you. We are so grateful to have had such an incredible class of artists lead us this year, and the examples you have set in the classrooms, the practice rooms, and on the stage will not be forgotten by the students who come after you. You will be the standard we set for our new leaders, and you will be the examples we give when we talk about what artistic excellence is. I cannot wait to see where you go and what you do. Athletics
Dear Spartan Student-Athletes and Athletics Community, It is still unimaginable that this spring semester ended so quickly and our spring sports seasons were taken away without warning. The decisions that were made by the NCAA, our conferences, and our University were done to aid in the fight against a global public health crisis. We understand the importance of athletics on our campus and in the community and understand the role that athletics plays in your daily lives. We know that you will never get this spring season and your non-traditional seasons back and there is nothing to replace all that would have occurred with you and your teammates. I am thankful, however, to see that our student-athletes, coaches, and athletic staff have handled this situation The Castleton Way, with Spartan pride and class. I cannot express enough how saddened I am for our graduating seniors who will not have the opportunity to wear their Spartan uniform again. There were no conference championships, conference honors, record-setting performances, and no senior day recognition. The entire athletic department shared in the disappointment with our senior athletes of their early departure from campus and termination of their senior year of competition. Although the 2020 spring sports season was taken away from our seniors, the life lessons learned from being a part of an athletic program—including sacrifice, dedication, leadership, and teamwork—will be carried with you for the rest of your lives. The friendships and relationships made through athletics will stay with you wherever you go. We look forward to seeing you on campus for Homecoming Weekend, alumni socials, and athletic events. You and your teammates will always be a part of our Spartan family. It has been disheartening to hear the number of student-athlete’s families who have been affected by this pandemic, but I am also encouraged by the stories from our current student-athletes and our alumni who are in the medical field, National Guard, or have volunteered to help get their communities through this crisis. I am proud of our students and the leadership roles that they have taken on. I look forward to seeing our athletic fields active again and having our Spartan Athletic Complex filled with the energy and excitement of game day competition from our student-athletes. We are excited about filling our bleachers again with our parents, fans, and community members wearing our 343 Green! I wish you all the best and hope to see all of you back on our campus soon. Spartans Now and Forever The spring of 2020 will always be, “the season that could have been.” The season that could have had fans filling the bleachers and lining the fences and hillsides surrounding our facilities. The season that could have seen the Spartans climb the ranks of the Little East Conference. The season in which long-standing individual or program records were surpassed. Perhaps the Castleton men’s lacrosse and softball teams would have made their first-ever appearances in the Little East Conference Tournaments. Both programs were, after all, just a few close games from accomplishing the feat in their inaugural seasons in the league in 2019. Perhaps the Spartan baseball team would have made a run deep into the LEC Tournament in a league that boasts some of the top programs in the country. Perhaps women’s lacrosse would make their way back to the LEC Tournament for the second year in a row despite losing multiple key players to graduation in 2019. Perhaps the track and field programs would have seen their first individual conference champions, and men’s tennis their first LEC victory. Men’s Lacrosse
Senior Cameron Russell was off to a fast start offensively and was on pace to set a new careerhigh in both goals and points. If he kept pace of his four-game totals from the early portion of the season, he would have finished with his second consecutive 30-goal season for the Spartans. Seniors Jeremy Clements and Nick Aleksonis were also off to impressive starts, 14
CASTLETON UNIVERSITY
with Clements pulling in 13 ground balls and causing four turnovers in four games, and Aleksonis seeing an increase in action in the midfield after being named a captain prior to the season. Senior goalie Dakota Jones was slotted as the team’s backup, appearing in one contest at Skidmore before the season was cut short. Softball
For the softball team, Sara Baker was off to a strong start at the plate after a year away from the diamond. She barely missed a beat in her time off, hitting .563 with four RBIs through five games in 2020. A difference-maker in the middle of the lineup, Baker was poised to help the program improve upon its final standing in the LEC a season ago. Fellow senior Calli Van Gorden had some early-season struggles, but would likely have turned things around at the plate in time. Van Gorden was a career .361 hitter coming into the season, a signal that her slow start would be short-lived had the season carried on. Baseball
Spartan baseball seniors made an impact all over the diamond this year, helping Castleton to a 7-4 start against strong competition in Florida and Virginia before the season came to a halt. 2019 All-American Davis Mikell was having a solid season once again, hitting .318 with 15 RBIs through 11 games, while John Stewart III was batting .406 and had 12 runs scored. Alex Borsari was having a career year, driving in six runs through 10 games, while Jake Spielberg had three RBIs and two runs in seven outings. On the mound, Cameron Goulet put together seven innings of one-run ball against Cabrini, and was getting settled for another strong season against conference opponents. Goulet was 6-0 all-time in conference action, including a 3-0 mark last year against stiff LEC competition. Garrett Moran picked up a pair of wins early in the season, including a victory over in-state rival NVU-Lyndon on the trip to Florida. Women’s Lacrosse
Seniors Erin Shuttle and Morgan Derosia were off to a blazing start offensively for women’s lacrosse, combining for 40 of the team’s 59 goals through five games. Shuttle racked up 23 goals and six assists for a team-high 29 points, with Derosia scoring 17 times with three assists for 20 points. Shuttle was on pace for a career-best season, and one that threatened some singleseason offensive records for the Spartans. If she kept her 4.6 goals-per-game average over the course of Castleton’s 17game regular season schedule, Shuttle would have become just the third-player all-time to reach 70 goals in a single season for Castleton. With the season cut short, Derosia missed out on joining the 100-point club, closing the year with 98 career points. Averaging 4.0 points per game through five games, she would likely have achieved the mark in her next contest—
one that was scheduled to be under the lights of Dave Wolk Stadium. Senior Megan Krumm also ranked among the team’s leading scorers, notching three goals and seven assists for the third-highest point total on the team behind Shuttle and Derosia. Krumm was also looking at a career-year, as she was on pace for a 30-point season after registering 19 points in 2019. Nicolle Trivino rounded out a strong senior class in the midfield, picking up nine ground balls and causing three turnovers in just three games. Trivino also had a goal for Castleton in what turned out to be the penultimate game of the season, the sixth score of her career. MAGAZINE SPRING 2020 15
Track and Field
Men’s Tennis
The men’s and women’s track and field programs were unable to make it to the outdoor season, but showed marked improvement throughout the 2019-20 indoor campaign that had hopes set high for the spring. Senior Clayton Bailey was back for his final season as a Spartan after a season-ending injury granted him an extra year of eligibility. He had seven top-five finishes in the javelin in his career, including a thirdplace finish at the North Atlantic Conference Championships as a freshman and a pair of wins—one at Eastern Connecticut State in 2018 and a second at Wesleyan in 2019. On the women’s side, sisters Emily and Lydia Maier were coming off indoor seasons that saw the program reach new heights. Emily set a personal-record time of 10.54 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles this season at Middlebury on her way to a fifth-place finish—one of four top-five finishes in her indoor career. She was also part of the 4x200 relay team that qualified for the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships in February. Lydia also qualified for the New England Regionals in the 600-meter run, an event that she holds the program record in. Lydia is also part of a pair of outdoor track records, holding the top time in the 800-meter run while being part of the program’s best 4x400-meter relay team.
The men’s tennis program had just two matches under its belt when the season was cut short, but had just recently defeated NVU-Johnson 9-0 to earn their first win of the year. Senior Jared Wheeler was 1-1 at the top flight, rolling to victory 6-0, 6-0 against Johnson’s Dylan Griffin. Fellow senior Spencer Butter also earned a win that day—grinding out a three-set victory, 7-6, 5-7, 10-8—to preserve the sweep of the Badgers. Wheeler wrapped up his career with 17 singles victories, while Butter finished his Spartan career with four victories in three seasons.

Though we will never know what might have transpired on the field, the diamond, the track or the court in the spring of 2020, we do know a few things for certain: the moments that those teams gave the Spartan faithful will never be forgotten; the memories created with teammates and coaches will last a lifetime; and, most importantly, we will always be Spartans.

The Castleton Alumni Association Lifelong membership to the Alumni Association is guaranteed to all individuals who graduate from Castleton University. The Castleton Alumni Association serves as a bridge that connects all aspects of the Spartan community, featuring a diverse alumni network of over 20,000 members worldwide. Alumni Association membership includes exclusive access to Castleton events, including remote alumni gatherings, reunions, and campus activities throughout the year, as well as specialty publications and mailings. Active involvement allows alumni to stay up to date with the University and one another, in addition to continuing to play a critical role in supporting campus developments, scholarships, and programming as Castleton molds the minds of the future.
