2014 CASTLETON FOOTBALL Last Time Out: Castleton Castleton is coming off a 1-9 season including a 0-7 mark in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC). The Spartans concluded the 2013 season with a tough 31-13 loss to Norwich in Spartan Stadium. In that game, Castleton held a 13-7 lead at the half but was shut out over the final 30 minutes as Norwich came alive with 18 points, including a pair of defensive touchdowns. Last Time Out: Plymouth St. Plymouth State is coming off a 2-8 season, including a 1-7 mark in the MASCAC. The Panthers dropped two of their final three games of the 2013 season, but did score at least 30 points in each contest. In Panthers’ finale against Fitchburg St. the team put up 392 yards of total offense, with 192 through the air and 200 more on the ground but came up short 41-30. Recent History Castleton and Plymouth St. have played four times, with three games decided by eight points or less. Last season the Spartans earned a 35-31 victory over the Panthers on the road. It was a back-and-forth contest as Plymouth St. broke a 28-28 tie on a field goal with 10:53 left. However, Castleton came back with a touchdown run by Elias LaCount at 8:58 to put the Spartans ahead for good. George Busharis threw for 463 yards to pace the offense while Jay Morgan had nine tackles and 1.5 sacks to lead the defensive effort. Plymouth St. amassed 451 total yards in the contest, with 194 coming through the air and 257 on the ground. Scouting the Spartans Offense: Castleton will look slightly different this season under first-year head coach Tony Volpone, though he does have a number of weapons returning on offense. Leading the offense is junior quarterback George Busharis. Busharis has made two career starts over the past three years and in those two games is 46for-82 for 794 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. Joining him in the backfield will be most likely one of three players who didn’t get any snaps last season in running backs Corey Brimmer, Evan Hoagland or Matt Rafus. Castleton does return a great deal of depth at wide receiver, led by senior Kevin Alberque. The 2013 ECFC First-Team All-Conference selection led the team with 660 receiving yards last year. Also coming back are seniors Zach Howe and Tyler Combs, as well as sophomore Soren Pelz-Walsh who caught 33 passes for 360 as a freshman. Defense: The Spartans bring back a number of starters to its defensive line. Juniors Brett Denning, Jeremy Stevens and Luke Quesnell saw extensive time on the line last year along with senior Jelani WilliamsBeckett. Junior Mitch Bouton returns to defense after starting on the offensive line last year while

CASTLETONSPORTS.COM sophomore Allen Justice should also see action. The linebacking corps is veteran laden, led by junior Jay Morgan. Morgan is the team’s top returning tackler and led the Spartans with 3.5 sacks in 2013. He will be joined by upperclassmen Leo Audy, Mike Perrone, Ryan Stanek and Tony Argillander. Senior Eric Mimnaugh will be called on to lead the defensive backfield with Nick Romeo, Christian Procida and Derek McAdoo also seeing action. Scouting the Panthers Offense: Plymouth St. will once again rely on its rushing attack to spearhead the offense. Senior Mark Hennessy is the team’s top returning rusher after running for 464 yards and six touchdowns in 2013. Three different quarterbacks started last year and all three return for the Panthers, in Jake Tyler, Ryan Perron and Drew Bolton. Tyler started the first four games before a season-ending injury followed by Perron starting five games and Bolton starting in the regular season finale. The Panthers graduated their top two receivers with tight end Ian Bures being the team’s top returning pass-catcher after collecting 13 passes and one touchdown last year. Defense: Plymouth St. has a number of returning starters on defense, especially in the defensive backfield. Chris Smith and Zach Ziemba started a season ago at cornerback while Sam Bellamy held down the safety position. The Panthers return just one starting linebacker from last season in Mike Leonard. On the defensive line Plymouth St. expects to get contributions from returners Kyle Wilson and Zack Wilkins, as well as many newcomers.
