2014 CASTLETON FOOTBALL LAST TIME OUT: CASTLETON The Spartans are coming off a 20-13 overtime victory against Plymouth State at Spartan Stadium on September 6. Castleton jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the second quarter but the Panthers came back to tie the game with 10 unanswered points midway through the third. Neither team scored again until a 37-yard field goal by Bobby Lineberger with 1:58 left in regulation made it 13-10. However, Plymouth State drove 62 yards in 1:01 before a field goal with 51 seconds remaining tied it 13 apiece. In overtime the Spartans received the ball first and punched it into the endzone on a two-yard run by Matt Rafus. The Panthers then received the ball on the 25-yard line and on their second play from scrimmage Eric Mimnaugh intercepted a pass at the sevenyard line to end the contest. LAST TIME OUT: RENSSELAER The Engineers are coming off a tough 34-31 loss to Alfred on Saturday to fall to 1-1. RPI fell behind 14-3 early but came back to take a 17-14 lead and eventually go into the half with a 24-21 advantage. Midway through the third quarter the Engineers pushed their lead to 31-21, however, less than two minutes later the Saxons scored to cut the deficit to 31-27. Alfred then added an 82-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter for the 34-31 lead. RPI’s best chance to score came in the final four minutes as the team had a second-and-goal from the one-yard line. However, a personal foul penalty brought the ball back out to the 16 and three plays later RPI missed a 33-yard game-tying field goal with 3:12 left. RECENT HISTORY Castleton is 0-3 lifetime against the Engineers, including 0-1 at Spartan Stadium. Last year the Spartans fell 23-8 on the road. Castleton held RPI to 354 yards of offense while recording 271 total yards. The Engineers led 16-0 at the half and pushed their lead to 23-0 early in the fourth. A touchdown with 1:10 left put the Spartans down 23-8 and they then recovered an onside kick. Tyler Higley drove Castleton down to the six-yard line but they were unable to get any closer before turning the ball over on downs. Higley threw for 313 yards in the game while Soren Pelz-Walsh had 11 catches for 147 yards. For RPI, Jeff Avery threw for 167 yards and two TD’s. SCOUTING THE SPARTANS Offense: Castleton put up 383 yards of total offense in its opening week win, with 204 coming on the ground and 179 through the air. The team’s 204 rushing yards is the most in a game since 2011 as the Spartans rushed 48 times while also attempting 31 passes. Matt Rafus carried the ball 30 times for 134 times and scored two touchdowns while Corey Brimmer added 40 yards on the ground. Tyler Higley was a model of efficiency through the air, completing 61 percent of his passes, going 19-for-31 for 179 yards and zero
