FALL
2022 | REPORT OF GIFTS
Fall is truly one of the best times of the year in higher education. We welcome hundreds of eager new Spartans into our family and reunite with friends we missed over the break. The beautiful, albeit all too short, Vermont summer gives way to the fantastic foliage that people come from all around to see. It’s also a time when we set our sights on new initiatives for the coming year and look back at what your generosity has meant to our campus and community.
As we reflect, it is the perfect time to highlight how your gifts have made a difference on our campus and to our students.
In November of 2021, we said goodbye to our beloved Victoria Angis, who retired after 41 years of dedicated service. In lasting tribute to her outstanding accomplishments within the Castleton community and beyond, we launched the Victoria Angis Legacy Campaign and created a $50,000 scholarship in VA’s name for SOS & SGA students. The outpouring of generosity from those who loved VA also allowed us to give $10,000 gifts to causes she championed on campus: Women’s History Month, Diversity and Inclusion, Green Campus, and Student Orientation Staff.
Additionally, in November, Castleton University joined thousands of organizations around the world to celebrate Giving Tuesday. Our extraordinary Spartan community came together to support our more than 600 student-athletes and raised more than $25,000 - a Castleton Giving Tuesday record - and we surpassed our goal of 200 donations!
In total, our Spartan community during the year 2021-22 raised over $622,000 to ensure that future Spartans continue to receive the meaningful and impactful education that generations of our alumni have cherished.
Be assured that this will continue to be the case as we transition into Vermont State University in the summer of 2023. Your contributions will continue to support Castleton’s amazing campus and the success of its students. Our name may change over the years but our goal of educating the complete person never will, and your support continues to make that possible.
As always, thank you for your generosity. The past year is a testament to everything we can accomplish together. We are so grateful for your continued support.
Warmest regards, Carrie Savage Director of Development and Alumni Affairs

A Convocation Celebration
Castleton University kicked off its fall semester at Convocation on Thursday, Sept. 1. The event brought a crowd of more than 300 students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to Casella Theater.
Campus Executive Director Cathy Kozlik welcomed students back to campus – including more than 600 new students. Kozlik reflected on a summer that had campus buzzing –from the Boston Crusaders who serenaded the campus community while practicing on the grounds to the athletic camps filled with potential future Spartans – and looked ahead to what’s to come this semester. She identified some of the ways she’s seen The Castleton Way at work, celebrating some of Castleton’s unsung heroes – including facilities staff and others – who work tirelessly to support our students in ways that often go unrecognized.
“From the voluntary efforts of faculty to see a need and fill it, applying for grants, and creating programs like the Center for Social Justice and Trauma Informed Care to the news that over the summer, a Castleton football player who was part of the Be the Match campaign became the fifth Spartan to donate bone marrow to help save a life,” she said.
Coordinator of Pathway Program for English Language Learners Adrienne Matunas introduced 44 new international students who come to Castleton from 17 countries. It is the largest cohort of incoming international students in the University’s history.
Faculty Assembly President Dr. Preston Garcia welcomed students to campus on behalf of Castleton’s dedicated professors,
encouraging them to lean on professors when needed.
Student Government Association Perry Ragouzis shared his experience at Castleton, reflecting on those who came before him while telling his fellow students to find something they’re passionate about and get involved on campus.
Castleton’s President Dr. Parwinder Grewal – who also serves as the inaugural president of Vermont State University – welcomed new, first-year students to campus. He encouraged them to look for opportunities at Castleton and assured them that, like him, the connection they feel to the university would be strong. He encouraged them to put their studies first but echoed Ragouzis’ sentiment to get involved on campus.
The crowd also enjoyed performances by the Castleton Wind Symphony and University Chorale, which led those in attendance through the Castleton Anthem.

Castleton Named Top Nursing School
Nursing Schools Almanac has named Castleton University’s School of Nursing No. 59 among institutions in New England.
To produce its list, Nursing Schools Almanac reviews nearly 3,000 nursing schools and campuses across the country before assessing them on three factors: the institution’s academic prestige and perceived value, the breadth and depth of nursing programs offered, and student success (particularly on the NCLEX licensure examination).
Castleton is home to several Nursing programs for professionals at various stages of their careers. This includes a CCNEaccredited baccalaureate program and an online master’s degree in Nursing. The university’s main campus and Bennington campus feature state-of-the-art simulation centers, featuring a medication dispensing unit, pediatric simulators, and more.
A College of Distinction
Colleges of Distinction has once again recognized Castleton University for its commitment to quality education and its undergraduate students. College of Distinction has celebrated schools throughout the United States for excellence in undergraduate-focused higher education for more than 15 years.
Castleton demonstrated exemplary commitment to the four distinctions, including engaging students, great teaching, vibrant communities, and successful outcomes to receive the Colleges of Distinction honor.
In addition to its overall undergraduate distinction, Castleton received additional marks of distinction in four areas: Nursing, Education, Career Development, and Business.

“Your Castleton education has prepared – and hopefully inspired you – to find something you are passionate about and do that every day. That is how you make a difference in the world.”
Castleton University celebrated the accomplishments of members of the Class of 2022 at its 235th Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 14, marking the first in-person, university-wide commencement in three years.
Mia Schultz, president of the Rutland Area Branch of the NAACP, addressed the more than 3,500 guests in attendance and those watching the ceremony live from home. She shared her journey to community activism, her lived experience with racism, and encouraged students to become leaders in their communities and push for positive change whenever they can.
Castleton’s former Interim President Tom Mauhs-Pugh reflected on the contributions of the class, including growth in experiential learning opportunities, clubs and activities, and more. He also encouraged students to look ahead and get excited about what’s to come.
“Your Castleton education has prepared – and hopefully inspired you – to find something you are passionate about and do that every day. That is how you make a difference in the world,” he said.
Class of 2022 President Adam Mitchell also addressed his classmates, encouraging them to find the balance between refining their skills and self-care as they begin their careers.
Assistant Professor and School of Nursing Chair Helen Papeika was recognized with the Outstanding Faculty Award. Sport Management graduate Jahwara Rennalls was honored with the Leonard C. Goldman Distinguished Senior Award. Heather Porter, a part-time faculty member in Psychological Sciences, was awarded the Endowed Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Award.

Ragouzis Named VSCS
Student Trustee
Perry Ragouzis, a Political Science major from Fort Collins, Colorado, has been appointed to an important position within the Vermont State Colleges System ecosystem. Ragouzis was recently named the student trustee for the VSCS Board of Trustees.
Members of the Castleton community may know him for the work he has done to organize food drives to benefit students who face food insecurity during breaks in the academic year, or from his role on various committees, or maybe they’ve seen him in class or working a shift in the box office of the Fine Arts Center.
Building Bright Futures
Castleton University Facilities Director
Randy Crossman has been taking on a new challenge — hiking to the summit of Pico Mountain 365 times in 365 days.
Lovingly referred to as “PicoSummit365,” Crossman is hiking to foster awareness for Building Bright Futures, a non-profit organization whose mission working to improve the well-being of young children and families in Vermont.
His driving force is the love he has for his family; his daughter, Morgan Crossman, is executive director of Building Bright Futures and has her own young daughter named Amelie.
“I started hiking and running Pico when I was 14 years old, so I’ve grown up on this
“I want to really shed a light on just how important the student experience is, and how having a student body that leaves welladjusted to the real world is incredibly important, and it’s something that should be continually at the forefront of the board of trustees thinking,” he said.
The board of trustees provides leadership and governance at the system level, addressing issues of funding, sustainability, accessibility, affordability, and student retention and completion. The student trustee is one of 15 trustees that make up the board.
mountain,” Crossman said. “When I started PicoSummit365 last summer, I told myself I would try it for 30 days. I made it to 30 and decided to go for 50. I needed a cause to motivate me, so I told Morgan I wanted to raise awareness of Building Bright Futures and the great things they’re doing for Vermont families.”
Crossman has hiked through all seasons, most recently facing temperatures as low as 20 degrees below zero with 15 mile-per-hour winds. He completed his challenge in June.

Our FacultyFellow
The Vermont State Colleges System Board of Trustees has named Castleton English Professor and Director of the Castleton Center for Teaching and Learning Chris Boettcher as the VSCS Faculty Fellow for the 2022-23 academic year. This distinguished fellowship is awarded twice a year and recognized tenured faculty who demonstrate outstanding accomplishments in teaching and learning.
Fellowships provide time for faculty to work on academic projects that are meaningful to them by limiting the number of courses the faculty member is assigned to teach in a semester. Boettcher joined the Castleton community in 2008, teaching general education courses in writing and literature.
He will present some of his work at the Vermont State Colleges Faculty Fellow celebration next year.
Learning by Doing
From students in the Resort & Hospitality Management program who play a part in bringing the World Cup to life, students who travel to Iceland to help with reforestation efforts, and students who complete internships in our local community, opportunities for real-world, hands-on learning are a critical piece of a Castleton education.
“We are so proud of Castleton students for their hard work and astute efforts. These students are engaged, learning, and making a difference in their own lives, and the lives of those around them,” said Director of Experiential Learning and Workplace
Readiness Jessica Duncan ‘11.
Nearly 460 Castleton students completed an experiential learning opportunity during the spring semester. This includes internships, clinical placements, student teaching, practicums, field experience, research, and co-ops. For the year, Castleton students engaged in more than 970 experiential learning engagements.

Meet Vermont State University’s President
Dr. Parwinder Grewal was named the inaugural president of Vermont State University in April 2022. The university, comprised of Castleton University, Northern Vermont University, and Vermont Technical College, will be the first statewide, hybrid institution in the United States.
“I am honored to be selected as the Inaugural President of Vermont State University,” he said. “I look forward to collaborating with Chancellor Zdatny, the VSCS, the Board of Trustees, the State of Vermont, community leaders, faculty, staff, and students to build our new university as a national model for a state-wide, community-engaged, hybrid university that transforms lives and communities across the state.”
Dr. Grewal brings over 25 years of higher education experience and 10 years of biotechnology research and development experience in industry and government in six U.S. states and five countries. Most recently, he served at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, a new university created through the merger of three long-standing legacy institutions spanning multiple campuses and communities.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and a master’s degree in Plant Pathology from Punjab Agricultural University, and a Ph.D. in Zoology from Imperial College London.
Dr. Grewal is also serving as president of Castleton University, Northern Vermont University, and Vermont Technical College for the 2022-23 academic year, leading the three institutions as they transition to Vermont State University.

Cameron Wescott Fosters His Passion for Music at Castleton
As a trumpet player who grew up in Poultney, Vermont, Cameron Wescott has performed with various ensembles around the Castleton community before attending Castleton. When it came time to decide what school he wanted to attend, Cameron felt very comfortable choosing Castleton because he “was aware of the environment here.”
Among his biggest faculty influences are Dr. Heidi Welch, assistant professor and director of music education, as well as Professor Joshua Thompson, coordinator of instrumental studies and arts recruitment.
“They are passionate, caring, and manage to push my development further than I have ever thought possible,” he said.
Beyond his relationships with his professors, Cameron also noted the close connections among students.
“Everyone has a general sense of caring for one another, and that is something I plan to take with me into my career,” he said.
Pursuing a degree in Music Education was a natural choice for Cameron.
“Music has been something I have been involved with as long as I can remember,” he said. “There is never any doubt in my mind that I want to spend my life teaching music, and I am reminded of this every day.”
For Cameron, one of the greatest highlights of his time at Castleton has been its people.
“I will definitely remember the people the most. I’ve made an incredibly strong group of friends here and I think our bond will last a long time,” he said. “If I were to get nothing else out of Castleton (which is not the case), the people I’ve met here would make it worth my time.”

Iyanna Williams
Developing Career Success
As a student, Iyanna Williams imagined a career working in sales, having concentrated in marketing for her degree. Nearly four years later, she’s found herself fully immersed in the world of development and fundraising.
“I kind of just fell in love with the relationshipbuilding aspect. Marketing and development are not very far off,” she said.
After moving to Boston, Williams was working for a temp agency when she accepted a placement at Harvard University. There, she worked as a staff assistant in major and principal gifts. After three months as a temp, she was hired full-time.
After two years as a staff assistant, she was promoted to a group leader position, where she became responsible for managing 12 other staff assistants alongside another cogroup leader.
Following her time at Harvard University, Williams made the transition to her current role as a major gifts officer at Wentworth Institute of Technology where she manages a portfolio of 128 prospects. Williams noted that every role in life, whether as a student or professional, is what you make of it.
“Your experience is what you make it. Wanting a better opportunity is learning what you’re interested in, what your working
style is, and then making those connections. I think relationship-building would be my key to success,” she said.
One of her valued relationships is with Business professor Peg Richards.
“I think that she just was such a great teacher. She really cared about her students and checked in on her students within the coursework, but also outside of coursework,” she said.
