Celebrating the Career and Legacy of Victoria Angis

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT As students returned to campus this year, I felt incredible satisfaction. Our classes are meeting face to face, residential enrollment has rebounded, and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic have only made us a stronger and closer community. I never thought I would find myself celebrating normalcy. But, then again, what we consider “normal” is pretty great around here. To say that last year was the most difficult in the University’s recent history would be an understatement. Thankfully, resiliency, dedication, and ingenuity are part of the Spartan DNA. In fact, we didn’t just muddle through the pandemic; we found ways to grow as people, become a stronger community, and improve the way we serve our students. Our remarkable faculty and staff summoned the energy to implement initiatives that improve student success and allow us to deliver our courses in new and exciting ways. To name a few, we instituted a massive upgrade of our classroom technology, including the addition of telepresence classrooms, where we can extend in-person instruction to remote sites and off-campus students. We also established a Center for Teaching & Learning where faculty can learn about best practices in pedagogy. And we adopted new advising software that allows faculty and staff to work together to provide every student the academic and emotional support they need. In the pages that follow, you will find a plethora of news that might look pretty normal to you: Stories of success and progress; the inspiring work of our students; and the accomplishments of our alumni. Trust me when I tell you that all of this was achieved under anything but normal circumstances. We succeed because you believe in us and give generously to our programs, scholarships, and initiatives. As always, I am deeply grateful for your unwavering commitment. I can rest easy knowing that Castleton will always be here for you and you will always be here for Castleton. Dr. Jonathan Spiro Castleton University President 2

Transforming the Vermont State Colleges System In 2023, Castleton University, Northern Vermont University, and Vermont Technical College will unify and become one university under a common accreditation with campuses in Castleton, Lyndon, Johnson, Randolph, and other areas of Vermont. As we look ahead to our new university, students will have greater access to: • High-quality, comprehensive experiential education that prepares students for rewarding careers and active participation in their communities • A broader and deeper range of courses, faculty, and student activities • An even larger alumni network to tap into for inspiration and career success Teams of stakeholders from across our universities and colleges have been meeting to begin envisioning how we can better serve our students, alumni, the communities in which we operate, and Vermont as a whole. We have spent the past several months working alongside our marketing consultant – the North Carolina-based firm VisionPoint – to develop a strong brand for our new university that reflects our collective strength. Spreading Virtual Spartan Spirit Despite the physical distance amongst us, our alumni community grew closer than ever over the past year and a half as we together navigated a global pandemic and nationwide travel restrictions. Our Spartan nation openly embraced virtual connections, bringing together alumni from both near and far. From cooking demonstrations and yoga classes to networking events, student mentoring, and reunions, over 25 virtual alumni events were held throughout the year, featuring hundreds of Spartan participants with graduation years ranging from 1955 to 2021.

Celebrating Castleton Excellence In August, at an intimate on-campus ceremony, members of the Alumni Association and Castleton community honored eight outstanding alumni and dedicated friends who received awards in 2020 and 2021 for their impact on their local communities, respective professions, and the University. Ike Bendavid ‘16 was the recipient of the 2020 Emerging Leader Award. Bendavid is a twotime Emmy nominated news anchor for WCAX News. His career began as an intern in 2016, and since his initial hire, he has experienced and embraced all aspects of broadcasting, as a photographer, producer, anchor, and reporter. Joan ‘84 and Mark Brown were honored with the 2020 Spartan Impact Award for their dedication to supporting Castleton students. The couple sponsor an annual academic scholarship, the Roger G. Brown Memorial Scholarship, created in memory of Mark’s father, a professor at Castleton in the 1960s, as well as share more than 25 years of consecutive giving to the University. Both Joan and Mark also partake in student mentoring, providing job and internship opportunities for students, and most recently shared their testimony in video form to raise critical funds for student scholarships. Ceil Hunt ‘11 received the 2020 Spartan Service Award of Excellence for her extraordinary record of volunteerism and dedication. Hunt has served as a member of the Friends of the Fair Haven Library, a Fair Haven Library trustee, the Fair Haven Town moderator, the Slate Valley Unified School District moderator, a board member of Fair Haven Concerned, a board member and Treasurer of the Castleton Community Center, a member and officer of the Fair Haven Historical Society, and a member and officer of the Castleton Women’s Club, in addition to her continued role on the Castleton Alumni Association Board of Directors. 4

Dennis Wright ‘68 ’79 was recognized in 2020 with the Castleton Way Award. This onetime specialty award honored Wright for his steadfast support of the University in the areas of time, talent, and treasure. In 2019, Wright Painting donated labor to the renovation and restoration of the historic Granger House located on campus, and a recent multi-year pledge by Dennis and his wife, Tuesday, significantly bolstered student scholarship resources for deserving Castleton students. Steve Earley ‘69 was celebrated as the Outstanding Alumni of the Year for 2020. With nearly 30 years of philanthropic giving, Earley’s impact on Castleton will be felt for generations. After retiring from a long-standing career as a teacher, administrator, and member of the Vermont School Crisis Planning Team, Earley continues to engage with the University on a variety of levels including, helping to organize and attend class reunions, as well as participating in annual events such as the Castleton Gala and Golf Classic. Ali Flewelling ’11 received the 2021 Emerging Leader Award. Flewelling serves as a Communications Business Partnerships Manager for BAE Systems, the global aerospace and defense company. She leads a team of executive communications professionals who serve as advisors to the company’s senior executives. Her team provides strategic internal and external communication support for the Electronic Systems sector’s seven business areas, spanning commercial and defense markets, which employ more than

“He looked at me and said, ‘If you want to work someplace that you can make a difference and you’ll never work harder in your life, this is the place for you.’ As soon as he said that, I said, ‘That’s exactly what I want.’”

A Lasting Legacy On a Friday afternoon in late October, Associate Dean of Students Victoria Angis will turn off the lights in her office, close the door, and at the same time, bring her more than 40-year career serving Castleton University and its students to a close. Angis – more affectionately known as VA to those around campus – will retire this fall after a long and distinguished career. Humble Beginnings Angis completed most of her undergraduate coursework at University of New Hampshire. There, she found her passion for planning, particularly student activities. “My sophomore year, this boy I liked said, ‘I’m going to a meeting in the MUB,’ which was what we called the student union, or the campus center. It was the Memorial Union Building. ‘Do you want to come?’” she said. “I said sure, like a puppy dog. I didn’t even know what the meeting was about.” The meeting was to start a club that would coordinate big-name concerts on campus. “I discovered that I wasn’t a great student, but I loved putting on events,” she said. “And I was good at it.” Next Stop: Fitchburg State University Angis eventually packed up and moved to the midwest to finish her degree. She was working in a student union in Minnesota when she got a call from her former advisor. He was at Fitchburg State University in a newly-opened student union and wanted Angis to come work with him. She arrived at Fitchburg that July and took on the role of assistant director of operations. After four years at Fitchburg, Angis was wanting more. “I thought, I want my own place where I can make decisions and put my stamp on it,” she said. “Low and behold, a job at Castleton showed up.”

A Place to Leave Her Mark Angis first came to Castleton in 1980. She applied for a position as coordinator of student activities/director of the campus center. After a day-long interview, Angis found herself in then-president Tom Meyer’s office. “He looked at me and said, ‘If you want to work someplace that you can make a difference and you’ll never work harder in your life, this is the place for you.’ As soon as he said that, I said, ‘That’s exactly what I want.’” Angis received a call from Meyer the next week offering her the job. Transforming SOS Angis’ core job included responsibility for the Campus Center, student activities, student government, and orientation. Not long after her arrival, Angis and Dean of Students Joe Mark had their first introduction to Castleton’s orientation counselors. They immediately knew they had to change the perception of the group – starting with the name. “One reason it was important to me is I remember in excruciating detail being a freshman in college in 1969 and how painful it was to walk on campus. Then I was greeted by my orientation leader and I knew I could get through this. Then, I became an orientation leader and orientation coordinator,” she said. “I knew what it meant to me to be an orientation leader, how it helped me become confident. It helped me to become secure in my place in the world as an awkward nerdy, big-haired shy person.” 7

“When I first came here, I didn’t know anyone. I was very lonely, very shy. I spent far more hours in the Campus Center than I did in my apartment. And there are students who do that. They find their place there. They find themselves there. I can empathize with that because that was me.” New Challenges Ahead Angis has worn many hats during her time at Castleton. Most of her responsibilities have built on her work with students. Some came to her because she felt strongly it had to be done. Others required a leader who was detailoriented and could rally a group of people to collaborate for a common goal. She served as assistant dean for campus life before stepping into her current role as associate dean of students. She also served as interim director of admissions and interim director of institutional research. Today, Angis serves on 13 committees, chairing, co-chairing, or convening 10 of them. These include archives, commencement, cultural affairs, CU See Me, diversity, equity and inclusion, disabilities access, Green Campus Work Group, homecoming and family weekend, registration and orientation, sexual assault protocol, student wellness task force, veterans and military service team, and Women’s History Month. Home Away from Home When you ask Angis to describe the Campus Center in one word, it’s home. “When I first came here, I didn’t know anyone. I was very lonely, very shy. I spent far more hours in the Campus Center than I did in my

apartment. And there are students who do that,” she said. “They find their place there. They find themselves there. I can empathize with that because that was me.” When former president Dave Wolk announced the Castleton Student Initiative – a campaign that included building a new Campus Center – Angis was looking forward to being part of the process. She kept waiting for an invitation to meetings with the architect and contractors, but it never came. “This went on for months and finally, I knew when the dean was leaving, and I knew where they were meeting so I went. And Dave was there, and he just said, ‘oh, hey Victoria!’ So I just kept coming,” she said. “I was the only female. I got to have a pretty good relationship with the architect because he had renovated a lounge in a student union, but he had never built a student union. And I’ve never built a student union too, but I figured I’ve been in a lot more student unions than he had. So, I was able to feed him information and they started to include me in decisions.”

A Fond Farewell Five years ago, Angis’ friends started to mention retirement. At the time, she couldn’t even bring herself to say the word. It took her three years to be comfortable thinking about retiring. Angis retires on October 29 – four days after her 70th birthday. “I’m getting used to the idea that after October 29 this won’t be my identity. That’s part of it. It’s been my home away from home for so long and is so much a part of my identity. My new mantra is a quote from E.M. Foster. We must be willing to let go of the life we had planned, so as to live the life that is waiting for us.”

Angis recalls walking into the newly renovated Campus Center when it first opened in 2009. “It was one of the pinnacles of my career,” she said.

Students Launch NAACP Chapter Castleton University is home to a new NAACP collegiate chapter – the only of its kind in Vermont. The group, which includes founding members Raynolds Awusi, Nadia Cox, and Tajae Edwards, began the process of forming a university chapter last spring. They received official approval from the national NAACP office in June. Castleton’s group is the fourth chapter in Vermont. There are currently more than 600 youth councils, high school chapters, and college chapters across the country.

and there are not many students of color here, everyone should feel welcome and included.” Membership in Castleton’s collegiate chapter is open to all students. The chapter will be overseen by student leaders, as well as advisor Rich Clark.

To charter a new chapter, Castleton had to meet a number of criteria, including keeping a minimum of 25 members. At the end of the year, the chapter had approximately 30 members.

This year, Edwards and Cox hope to continue engaging the Castleton community in important conversations, while also continuing to produce programming like film discussions, training for the community, and more.

“Even though Castleton is small and there are not many students of color here, everyone should feel welcome and included. Students should feel welcome in Vermont,” Cox said.

Innovative Internship Philip Williams doesn’t know precisely where his future career in archaeology will lead. For now, he is content to learn and contribute to the field as a sophomore through an internship at Berkshire Museum. Williams, an Archeology, Geography, and Applied Anthropology (AGAA) major from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, is working with Berkshire Museum and the Castleton University Digital Archaeology Project to document and preserve the museum’s collection of ancient Palmyrene funerary reliefs through a series of high-resolution 3D scans. He is working with funding from a Castleton University StudentFaculty Summer Research Grant.

“It’s really hard to say what is most valuable from this experience; so much of it is brand new to me, working with artifacts, the process of 3D scanning, the entire concept of digital archeology,” Williams said. “All of this is both practical knowledge for my major but also will help me as a student while I progress through the program.” When the project is complete, Berkshire will receive a 3D-printed copy of a bust that can be used in classrooms and other locations around the county. Castleton Alumna Crowned Miss Vermont Danielle Morse ’21, who studied Nursing at Castleton, was named the winner of the 2021 Miss Vermont pageant. The New Haven, Vermont, native first set her sights on the Miss Vermont title as a freshman in high school. That year, Morse spent more than a month at the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital following complications from an appendectomy. After that experience, Morse became the 2014 Children’s Miracle Network Hospital Champion for Vermont. She met former Miss Vermont Jeanelle Achee at a hospital fundraiser. Now, Achee is an operating room nurse. Morse will soon follow in her footsteps as a surgical nurse at Porter Medical Center, a small hospital located in Middlebury, Vermont. Her encounter with Achee, combined with her hospital stay, influenced her career path. As Miss Vermont, Morse travels across the state making appearances at different

organizations and fundraising events such as the Boys and Girls Club and UVM Children’s Hospital golf fundraiser. In addition to her duties as Miss Vermont, she also serves as a volunteer firefighter. Morse believes her Castleton education built a tenacity in her to achieve her lofty goals. “My experience at Castleton taught me that no matter how many times you are pushed down or fail to never give up on yourself,” she said. Morse will compete in the 100th annual Miss America competition this December.

Castleton Launches New Virtual Tour Prospective students can visit campus from the comfort of their home through Castleton’s virtual campus tour, which was recently updated to include additional stops and new interactive features.

Visitors can interact with hot spots throughout the tour, including photos and videos that provide an insider’s perspective into life at Castleton, while also being introduced to Castleton students, faculty, and staff.

The tour provides 360-degree panoramic views from 20 different locations across Castleton’s main campus and satellite locations in Killington and Bennington, Vermont.

The virtual tour is a resource for admitted students who are looking to become more familiar with campus and for alumni who want to see the many ways their alma mater has evolved throughout the years.

The experience begins at the Alumni Gates, which provides a sentimental nod to Castleton’s rich history and student traditions. Stops along the tour include the Fine Arts Center, home to Castleton’s art, theater, music, and graphic design programs. Science labs, the library, and lecture halls across campus are also on display. These locations highlight academic life at Castleton, while views of athletics facilities, residence halls, and different dining options around campus provide an insight into student life. 12

Created in collaboration with YouVisit, a branch of EAB that specializes in virtual tours, the tour is also offered in Spanish and is accessible for people with disabilities. The virtual tour was launched by Castleton’s Admissions and Advancement Offices, and complements oncampus experiences and visits.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT:

Josie Gawrys When junior Josie Gawrys arrived at Castleton University, she knew she wanted to turn her passion for theater – particularly the behindthe-scenes work that goes into a successful production – into a career. But in her first weeks on campus, she overheard her student orientation staff leader encouraging other students to learn more about The Spartan, Castleton’s student-run newspaper.

“I can say as a sophomore I’ve had opportunities to stage-manage shows. I can say, going out into the world after college, that I’ve already stage-managed a handful of shows. Our professors are making sure that we’re prepared for a career in what we’re studying.”

“At that point, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be interested in it, but I sort of saw it as a way to branch out and make friends because the one thing that they tell you when you’re first coming in for your first year, for your first semester, is ‘get yourself out there … try a bunch of things … get involved,’” Gawrys said. “I took that to heart. At the beginning, it was just going to Spartan meetings and helping to edit the print version on weekends, but then I got more into writing, and I realized that I really enjoyed it.” Gawrys now spends her days in both the Fine Arts Center and Leavenworth Hall, double majoring in Technical Theater and Design and Media and Communication. “I chose Castleton for its theater department. All of the professors are very kind and very understanding, and genuinely care about their students and wanting to see them grow,” she said. “I can say as a sophomore I’ve had opportunities to stage-manage shows. I can say, going out into the world after college, that I’ve already stage-managed a handful of shows. Our professors are making sure that we’re prepared for a career in what we’re studying.” As a Media & Communication major, Gawrys’ byline has appeared in a number of local and statewide publications, including VTDigger as part of The Underground Workshop, a network of students and teachers from across the state collaborating to publish student-journalists work.

Traill Makes History as Castleton’s First NWHL Draftee Casey Traill, a 2021 graduate of Castleton women’s ice hockey program, was drafted by the Buffalo Beauts of the National Women’s Hockey League in June, making history as the first player in program history to be selected. Proudly representing her hometown of South Shields, England, Traill is also the league’s first draftee from the UK. Buffalo selected the former Spartan defender in the fifth round with the 25th overall pick, making her the second Division III athlete taken in the 2021 draft. The franchise has one NWHL title under its belt and holds the most championship game appearances with four. Traill served as a captain during the 2020-21 season as she wrapped up an impressive college career that featured 13 goals and 20 assists in 93 games, while leaving a tremendous mark on Castleton’s program. “Casey was a vital piece of this program’s puzzle for four years,” said Head Coach Tim McAuliffe. “She has it all: work ethic, attitude, skating ability, hockey IQ, and most importantly, grit.”

Traill received Third Team All-Conference honors in two consecutive seasons after being named to the NEHC’s All-Rookie squad as a first-year. She also landed on the NEHC AllAcademic Team in each year of eligibility. “I couldn’t be more proud of Casey and the way she has represented Castleton - I truly can’t think of a more deserving person,” McAuliffe added.

To date, the Ohio-based team’s work has developed multiple SaaS solutions including the only comprehensive total solution designed specifically for special education learners. This solution delivers complete, differentiated instructional programs enhanced by a groundbreaking IEP development system. “Initially, the whole concept was to get current event information down to a population that is typically void of that information,” explained Wostmann, who prior to joining n2y held senior-level positions within a variety

Hall of Fame Inductees 2021 Three new members were inducted into the Castleton University Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 18, 2021, during Homecoming and Family Weekend. Mathew Parker ’97 was a force for the Castleton men’s basketball team for four seasons in the mid-1990s, still ranking today among the program’s all-time leaders in total points and three-point shooting. He was twice named to the Mayflower Conference’s All-Conference Team, and helped Castleton earn a share of the regular-season title during his senior year in 1995-96 with a 12-2 record in league play. During his final year in the Spartan uniform, Parker netted double-digit point totals in 25 of his 28 games. Carolyn Brown (Griggs) ’09 helped put a recently-revived Castleton field hockey program on the map when she arrived on campus in 2005. She concluded her career as Castleton’s all-time leading scorer, and currently ranks third on the all-time points list for the Spartans at the time of her induction of industries from technology research to telecom. “I gave up a career path in corporate America to take a leap of faith and support n2y. It was the best decision I ever made.” With over 20 years of business development and operations experience, Wostmann is directly responsible for overseeing the operational areas of the business, including driving and maintaining n2y’s accelerated revenue growth, long-term strategic planning, and customer satisfaction. He fully embraces the n2y company mantra of ‘do well by doing good’ daily by ensuring his teams have the tools and resources needed for successful outcomes and innovative growth. “It’s an unbelievable community of people,” he said, adding that it has been a privilege working alongside his in-laws and wife Christin, who serves as n2y CEO and board chair. “We have a

Her 55-point senior season marks the fourth-most points in a single season by any Castleton field hockey player in the modern era, and helped lift Castleton to its first North Atlantic Conference Championship in 2008. C. Michael Cronin ’72 got his start at Castleton as a men’s basketball player for two seasons in 1970-71 and 1971-72. He was on the Dean’s List as a student, and was named a tri-captain of the 1971-72 men’s hoops squad. Following his graduation from Castleton with a bachelor’s degree in History, Cronin spent 30 years filling numerous roles in Capital Region high schools in New York. He was named to the American Football Association’s Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Capital District chapter of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 2013 for his lengthy career as an official. Beyond the athletics arena, Cronin spent 10 years as the mayor of Hudson Falls, as well as two years each as deputy mayor and village trustee for Hudson Falls.

We weren’t just selling a widget or doing something that made someone a lot of money and wasn’t enhancing the community we served. n2y is positively affecting kids’ lives day in and day out.” Wostmann credits his time at Castleton as helping to build strong business values centered around hands-on learning, taking advantage of unexpected opportunities, and creating a sense of community. “The path to get to where I am now was very curvy. I went into school with little direction or expectations and built a professional career around my strengths,” he said. “My Castleton education set me up to be able to constantly adjust and leverage my skillsets as the market and world continuously change.” 15

Why I Give ... We asked our donors to share why giving back to Castleton is important to them. Here’s what they told us. What’s your reason for giving back?

Lily ‘13 & Cameron Clark ‘12

“I choose to give back to Castleton because of everything Castleton provided for me during my time there. The connection I feel towards Castleton is as strong as it has ever been and that’s due to the hard working faculty and staff that are dedicated to ensuring a positive student experience.”

“Every single person at Castleton had an instrumental role in shaping the life we have today and we will always be grateful for that. We strive to repay that gratitude for the next generation of students. There’s a saying I heard recently ‘You have to give it away in order to keep it,’ we’ll keep giving it away to keep the Castleton tradition alive.”

Amir Pasic ‘15

“I believe to make the world a better place you start with the things that are close to you. Your friends, your family, your business and community. My experience at Castleton University was instrumental in helping me along the path, socially and academically. What better way to help others build that same foundation than to give.”

Michael Yarosevich ‘01

16

“I donate to Castleton to help support current CU students. My time at Castleton really prepared me to take the next steps into my adult life, both personally and professionally. As CU has grown from a small-town college to a university with a lot of influence in the greater Rutland area, CU students have benefitted from greater exposure and many more opportunities. The growth has been exciting to watch over the years—it makes me wish I was a CU student now!”
