Pop Race Nissan Stagea - Pennzoil

We remember when the bright yellow liveried Nissan Skyline R34 hit the race circuit back in the 90s. The car was an instant icon not only because of the way it looked, but also because it won more than a few races in Japan with Eric Comas at the wheel. Slapping this livery on a station wagon would have been unheard of, but we are sure this looks amazing and if it was real, would've taken on the mighty Volvo 850s in touring races. The model comes with some pretty slick rubber-covered chrome wheels and not only that, the opening hood lets you peer into a pretty RB12 engine.

ROYAL ENTRY

Auto World announces a 1:18 fit for a king

The Pontiac® Grand Prix™ entered its second generation with an all-new redesign for 1969. This “muscle-yacht” was a purpose-built car as envisioned by John Deloreon, the general manager of GM’s Pontiac Motor Division at the time. Deloreon wanted to capture the entire experience of old luxury marques like Duesenberg, Cadillac®, and Packard of the 1930s. Monikers like J and SJ, properly befit the Grand Prix name. Royal Pontiac, of Royal Oak, MI was already well known in the domain of Pontiac performance. The Grand Prix was no exception, despite its massive size. Royal optioned these 4000lb cars with the 428 H.O. 4bbl engine rated at 390hp. It was a formidable machine on the street, but didn’t look the part. Many “muscle” cars that dared to challenge were only viewed in the Grand Prix’s rear view. Inspired by the Hurst SSJ Grand Prix models, this Royal Bobcat is painted in factory-matched Firefrost Gold and Cameo White.

RALLY RALLY THEN

The Rallye Automobile de MonteCarlo 1992 took place roughly 31 years ago and was always considered one of the tough, but scenic rallies in the world. Since its beginning in 1911, the rally continued to be a showcase Monaco as a tourist destination and one of must-be destinations of auto racing. The landscape of Monaco has seen the likes of Turcat-Méry coupes, Graham-Paige 619s to Ford Zephyrs to the most lauded and applauded cars found on roads and memories today. To this fray of the ages, entered Lancia, who from the inception of their participation started dominating the rally. From the Stratos to the purpose-built Rally 037. Starting in the mid-80s, they started fielding the bonkers Delta, first with the S4, then

!

the HF (which we all know stands for High Fidelity) S4/4WD, The Integrale 16 and finally the HF Integrale in 1992. Which brings us to the model displayed in this article.

The MINIGT model is the 1992 rally winning #4 in the iconic Martini Racing livery, driven by that enigmatic French duo Didier Auriol and Bernard Occelli. The duo had been driving Lancia's since 1989 and making podiums in this rally. Being placed number 2 in 1989, winning in 1990, number 2 in 1991 and then winning again in 1992. MINIGT will also be making a limited-to-5000 4-car box set with both the clean and dusty version of the #4 car, plus the #1 and #11 models.

RALLY NOW

Fast forward almost 30 years and we have a completely different machine dominating the same rally. Driven by the outstanding French-duo (Deja vu?) Sebastien Loeb and Issabelle

Galmiche for M-Sport Ford WRT, the purpose-built Ford Puma Rally1 #19 covered in that distinct Red Bull livery with a forward charging bull. Built on the Ford Puma Crossover, this European Ford has so far won the 2022 Monte Carlo Rally and came second in the 2023 Swedish Rally. Any rally car model collector will tell you that these aren't merely models, they are reminders of their favourite drivers, events and those amazing scenes of pitting man and machine against the best nature can throw at them. Rallying will always be

the top of the heap for me when it comes to racing as opposed to going round and round on tarmac. Not to say that other racing isn't as exciting, but the thought of going down road and terrain that might turn on you at any moment really gets the adrenalin pumping. I for one, can't wait to see more rally cars from MINIGT. FORD

90s 90s

Everybody has different memories of the heady days of the 90s. The millennials were just entering their childhood, fuelled by all the digital comforts, the Generation Xers were becoming young adults, straddling the world between the analogue 80s and the new digital millennium. Automobiles started coming back from the 80s oil crisis slump and new technology helping them become cleaner and meaner. We started seeing V6s and V8s coming out, more turbocharged goodness hitting road and track. To commemorate this time, Majorette has decided to release their 90s YOUNGSTER Giftpack having not one, not two, not even three, but four NEW CASTINGS in the 5-car boxset. Two Americans, two Europeans and an JDM complete the pack.

MAJORETTE

First up is the Mercedes Benz 190E 2.5 16v Evolution II in all glorious glossy black with silver 6-spoke 120Y Style 3 wheels and barely any decoration. WHICH IS AS THE SUPREME DEITY INTENDED for this model to be made. Properly done grille, plastic heads and properly painted rear lights make this model skim the line between mass-market toy and prized collectible. We think that Majorette should never release this colour in the single blister pack, or ever again and make this model coveted among collectors. But that would be selfish of us. Every collector and fan deserve to own this Merc.

CHEVROLET CORVETTE C4 COUPE ONE64

Two new Chevrolet models join Majorette line up this season. First up is the 4th generation Corvette

(C4) Coupe in bright Competition

Yellow with black accents. This sleek model has proper 90s American muscle car written all over it. This is based off the ZR-1 and is the highlight of the 4th gen model. Black wheels and black interior perfectly complement this model. The opening hood lets you peek into an engine bay and opens endless possibilities for customizing.

MAJORETTE

NISSAN CEFIRO A31

The only Japanese model in the lineup is the Nissan Cefiro A31, and it shared its platform with other iconic models like the Skyline R32, Leopard F31 and the Laurel C33. A performance sedan, it came with 4 doors and so much sass. The Majorette version has been around since 2021 but as a limited premium model. First offering at as the car that is driven by the Majorette-sponsored Thai drifting queen, Christy Louis. This time it's a white model with an opening black hood blacked out plastic headlights, and smoky windows rolling on the new 120Z Style 1 wheels you see on Majorette Japanese cars.

CHEVROLET CORVETTE C4 ZR-1

The second Corvette to join the pack, it's still a C4 ZR-1 but this time it's a convertible version. The glossy red model features a darker red interior and lacks any gaudy tampos. Its clean-ness adds to the appeal of the model. This is one of the few convertible models that feature opening parts that we have noticed in the Majorette models, and we are hoping it's a trend that would continue.

RENAULT CLIO 16S

Last, but certainly one of the shining stars of the set is the Renault Clio 16S (S stands for 'soupapes' the French word for valves). Built as a hot hatch and a successor to the Renault 5 GT Turbo, this wider, lighter, faster car made quite an impression all around. Its offset air intake, wider front wings, and lower stance made it a darling of the racing and car enthusiast crowd. It also won European Car of The Year in 1990. The Majorette model debuts in Phase 2 guise and what seems to pay homage to the William Renault version in Monaco Blue and gold multi-spoke 110N Style 2 wheels.

FEAST YOUR EYES ON RELEASE OF THE 1967 MUSTANG GT

Feast your eyes on release of the 1967 Mustang GT that we managed to get our hands at the recently concluded GT Show in China. This licensed model is from their Vintage Cars series (#46) and comes in a nice little box, a white one and not a black one. Painted in a sparkly Dark Moss Green, the model is quite a delight to behold. With silver stripes running down the side, a chrome front and rear bumper set complete the colour scheme of the model.

The wheels are plastic, very much like 60% of the model. The only diecast being the body. There are no details to speak of, except the body panels and the silhouette is quite nice. After all, this is a toy through and through. Head, or taillights, remain unpainted, without and other decoration whatsoever. This makes for a great blank for customizers who really want to put some detail to a car that is a little bigger than the usual 1:64. But many brands don't want to fit into the pure 1:64 scale, if they can make it slightly bigger, why not.

BBURAGO FORD 1967
ONE64
MUSTANG GT

The highlight of the model is of course the paint work. The shimmering paint is glossy and looks amazing for a toy car. It does sit well with other models in the lineup, and isn't too far from being a collectible, vis-a-vis a Hot Wheel without the overthe-top drama that sometimes accompany those models.

It's a toy. I cannot stress that enough before you go start looking at it and comparing it to more detailed models out there. But its decent looking and would fit in the stable of an American Muscle collector quite well.

Releases the Ford Raptor

MAJOERETTE

The original Ford F150 Raptor has been a staple of the Majorette line since its debut in 2015. The model had an opening hood, painted headlights and pretty much nothing else. It was based on the SVT SuperCab version, which was two-door but with an elongated cab that seats 4. It first arrived in white, but without any RAPTOR markings. The front and rear bumpers were moulded into the body, but the two hook was part of the base. The first model with any RAPTOR markings came about in 2018 with a yellow and black version. Lifted versions debuted in the 2021 Tune Ups series and the last one to come out of that version was in the recently released RACE TRAILER series for Ford Performance.

We are presented with a brand-new version for 2023. The new version features an updated facia with plastic headlights, bumpers, two hook and wheel wells moulded into the base. Even the rear brake lights have the reverse lights painted on, so it looks close to the original as possible. This mode is based on the 4 door and has the front doors opening. Even the 13P wheels look fresh on this model. So, when we got the model, we decided to take it outdoor, just where this model would feel home in. Yes, it's more at home in the wide-open spaces of the American heartland, but we think this should be taken to the tropical jungles of Borneo and experience an adventure like no other. We are also looking forward to this model being covered in a very special livery for 2024 (hint hint) and being released then.

THE SUCCESS STORY OF THE GOLF IS A TYPICAL ONE OF VOLKS WAGEN.

AFTER THE BEETLE THE GOLf IS PROBABLY ONE OF THEIR MOST FAMOUS LINES.

Make it small, make it fast, make it easy to fix and make it reliable.

To date one of the most recommended cars in the second-hand market if you want to own a fully working modern classic with parts to spare. VW certainly had a handle on what car would fit the young generation at the time and developed what many would call a proper banger. Just a pair of gold BBS rims was enough to turn this simple youth mover into a formidable street racer and honestly that’s where it all began. Fast forward to decades later and these modern classics has gone through so many cosmetic changes, that’s its hard to come by a stock model in good nick.

Fortunately for 1/64 punters such as ourselves, life is so much easier when it comes to collecting cars, especially the pop icons that live on forever in our hearts. POP RACE has presented us with the equivalent of a nice beef stew on a frigid icy morning. This is comfort food. A casting that makes me feel all warm inside reminding of my youthful days and dreams of one day owning one of these not knowing that my love and taste for cars will constantly change over the years. Yes, times change, dreams change and cars get outdated become even more unaffordable in some cases. I doubt I will ever have one of these in my garage but I certainly don’t mind what POP RACE has done and love having this on my desk.

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI MkII ONE64
POPRACE

Brilliant red casting nicely lowered or dropped so that the wheels fit into the wide body with shaming the casting creators amongst the hardcore collectors who will whip out calliper rulers to measure the gaps. This one, sits nice and plush.

And talking about the wheels this car sits on, those BBS styled rims and the depth are pretty incredible considering how these parts have been machined and still able to roll. Takes me back to fondly remembering the ground clearance on the Yaris that they did a few months ago.

CASTING REMARKS ONE64

The VW GOLF MKII GT

is a modern classic and here is no doubt about it. It fits all the bills to attain that title and continues to excite young drivers who are at the start of their driving lives. Which brings things great casting into the hands of thousands who will have fond memories of their GOLF. Good call from POP RACE for doing this.

ON A SERIOUS NOT THOUgh,

these are the sort of models that are going to make collectors sit up and pay attention. So far POP RACE has been wielding some reasonable prices for what is looking like some exceedingly good models with new features like opening parts.

What is going on?!?!

It is getting crazy with the amount of choice that POP RACE is dropping, and they are killing it. It’s also great to know that POP RACE has progressed into making sure customers know that their product is legit. A bit like those coffee jars that come with a ‘sustainably sourced’ on the packet POP RACE has got the license tags on their newer packaging which means they now get widen their market and offer licensed product to the collectors.

HONDA CIVIC TYPE-R (FL5) ONE64
And you know no one is getting shortchanged along the line.

Pop race has dropped two variations in Red and White both with the TYPE-R badging that is both visible and clear in terms of detail. In fact, no one can complain about the detail of these two models in any way and they both have very good paint jobs.

Both of these cars will make a great addition to your HONDA CIVIC collection for sure. These are certainly on the level in terms of details, specially up against old school brands like TOMICA’s TLVN series which has similar details to the car created by POP Race at half the price.

WE HAV BEEN WAITING A LONG TIE FOR THIS RELEASE. THIS IS A RE-

FROM SINGER AND IT’S A STUNNER.

With a long list of SINGER Porsches under their belt POP RACE delivers a cracker surprise. So far the models have all been mono chromatic colours and plain racing stripe variations but this, this they knocked out of the park with the choice. And the reproduction to be fair is spectacular.

A bit of background story about the actual car. SINGER Vehicle Design not only reimagine Porsches they also have special programme which gives a very few chosen ones to have a completely bespoke ride, as if having a SINGER wasn’t bougie enough. This is one of those bespoke rides called the Mullholland Commission. It features a stunning artwork of the topographic terrain of the famous Mulholland Drive backed by the stunning paint colour ‘Blue Blood’. The car certainly stands out like a royal amongst peasants.

Now POP Race releases their 1/64 version, and it as looks as lovely as the real thing. First of all, the BLUE BLOOD PAINT work is stunning on the car matching those nice wide lines the wrap around the wheel arches. Then we have that gorgeous map which hasn’t lost any detail superimposed on that stunning paint job.

CASTING REMARKS ONE64

The model has gotten the various additions made to the car concerning the clients wishes to have a car capable of mountain driving. This includes a permanently raised wing for those windy corners, widened rally wheels and of course the rally styled headlights in the front. All SINGER styled additions, and all replicated by POP Race in well executed 1/64 model.

POPRACE
PORSCHE SINGER MULHOLAND DRIVE ONE64

Not really an official title like the more famous ‘pseudonyms PORSCHE race cars have endured over the years but a title that really fits the bill somehow.

By the 1980’s PORSCHE ruled LeMans there were so many teams fielding PORSCHE’S one could almost rename the race PORSCHE Le Mans. The were fast, reliable, and manageable to the point that if PORSCHE did F1 today there would be a lot of worried race directors.

CASTING REMARKS ONE64

The Sponsor

One of the teams that really pushed PORSCHE entries AND were responsible for some Porsche’s insane iconic liveries at LeMans and other endurance races was Kremer Racing. Kremer Racing secured many brands for their race cars from Jägermeister to APPLE Computers and had a handy stable of Porsche LeMans ready machines. The main sponsor for this particular car is a Japanese Fashion Brand for Women launched in the 70’s called

La Moda Itariya GOJI. Itariya was repped on the car written in KANJI script. The Japanese text associated with the word Garage is ‘Garage Itariya’ which was an offshoot company that imported Italian exotics into Japan. Both companies are still in operation to this day.

CASTING REMARKS ONE64

The Driver

Of course, there were three drivers but the most interesting was Japanese driver Tetsu Ikuzawa who was somewhat a prince of Japanese motorsport and quite heavily into fashion. He was no stranger to having a heavy foot and setting records being the first driver to lap FUJI Speedway a 6km circuit in under 2 minutes in a Porsche 906.

The Model

Another brilliant LeMans piece in 1/64 for those of you who have been hungering for such cars in this scale. Tarmac Works has carved out their speciality and are dropping some really righteous race machines of yesteryear. And, when you compare the model car to images of the real thing you will definitely be pleased because our guys don’t mess, whatever you have heard in the past it has never been about TW getting the details wrong.

As for the title:

Well, with it’s close ties with fashion and fame it stands to reason that this 935 should have its own pseudonym. Pink Princess

We have always been excited at the new releases TARMAC WORKS has consistently been surprising their fans with and this is another great piece for the collection.

For some the slightly offside rear FERARRI badge would be a deal breaker and of course we understand that and so does Tarmac Works who are always on hand to address any issues collectors may have with their model. We are however more forgiving and don’t mind it too much because everything else is in the right place what we would call a faithful replication of the details right down to a fairly detailed engine as far as one can see through the rear Perspex canopy.

Lovely casting!

The first words uttered as soon as we released this from its plastic cage and laid it out for a shoot. I personally am a huge fan of the Dodge Viper from its inception to the final rumble of the last viper to leave the assembly line. I have seen and examined many casting in 1/64 and I have a healthy enough collection to tell you that this is a definite must have.

No doubt! And there are a couple of things that make Johnny Lightening so freeking awesome. They are all limited to a certain number, this series is limited to 8956 cars per model. And all the cars are painted in the original factory colour codes which means this Viper in ‘Billet Grey’ will match the actual factory painted 1:1 scale car.

CASTING REMARKS ONE64

JOHNNY LIGHTNING

This is also a new casting of the 2014 VIPER released in 2022, which joins a long line of previously released VIPERS from various generations and of course tuned variations that fill up JL’s VIPER expansive catalogue. However, this one may be the fairest out of all of them. The body casting is perfect and proportionate. And, even though the lights are tampo’s there is no miss on any of the cars we have checked out, so the lights look really good as well. If I was to rate this car out of 10 against all the other 1/64 Vipers out in the market right now, I would give this a solid 9.5.

This car is from the era of strange American cars. It was a time when the auto manufacturing world was facing oil crisis’, emission regulations, economic depressions and the auto world was trying very hard to come to grips with what the world in general was becoming. This left the market open to some very experimental ideas and designs and a few innovations along the way. Some of them led to great things in the field of automotive history and some of them led to great fiery balls of death. The X11 was known to have moments of the latter due to some strange experimental design which involved the rear brakes locking up.

CASTING REMARKS ONE64

But other than its killer tendencies it wasn’t a quick car either, even though it won two SSB National Championships in 1982 and 1984 (HUH!?!?!?). But the car had character and was related to another car that had a cult following and was popular for catching fire, yes that’s right the CITATION is the FIERO’S cousin. At CastHeads we call them

Limited and looking very bright in yellow, this is another great piece from JL in terms of casting details and this one comes with opening parts, an opening bonnet and engine inside. A car remembered for all the wrong reasons but yet an important marker in American Automotive Evolution.

A true classic from the 70’s

and a car I was fortunate to experience growing up. The last of the opulent American cars that needed behemoth engines to move them around at great speed in great contrast to your modern mini-Kei type cars that zip around town. It’s the 70’s baby and Pontiac is already racking up the numbers about to cement themselves and the PONTIAC name firmly into the Automotive history books. The Grand Prix Line itself lasted almost a decade with various trims available.

There is no doubt this car is a classic and quite rightly so makes it into JL’s Classic Gold list and it certainly is a whopper in terms of collectability. Every aspect of this model oozes so much class, that you won’t care that a lot of the exterior parts are painted on, like the lights and door handles for example. But the body paint which is Bluestone Gray Poly (factory palette) is stunning and gorgeously contrasted with that white 70’s roof and of course those retro cool wheel details.

The casting variation in Set A is just as gorgeous in a stunning Caramel coloured option. Opening parts and with Johnny Lightening they really prefer sticking to the bonnet as the opening part with an engine done within production costs inside.

CHARLATAN!!!!!! I can hear the comments in readers heads but hear me out. Perfectly good casting with flawless paint, tampos and clear coat giving the orange a lovely popping shine.

Carbon fibre print on the rear spoiler. Rolling rubber wheels. Metal chassis with chassis parts engraved right up to the silencers, single mould. Opening engine lid with a multipart engine also painted in different colours to give the parts more realism. Actual 1/64 scale. Limited Edition. and this series has two stunning cars in both versions. Version B has a black version which we will drop on video but for the magazine I wanted to go with this because that colour is just absolutely stunning. Known as Sinamon Stick this colour is going to have you drooling and, it pairs very well with the matt black that has been added on to the top. Perfect paint coat, perfect clear coat and of course as a collector I appreciate the little details that have not been overlooked.

Like the ‘SRT’ LOGO at the back on the rear aero wing or more like duck tail spoiler. Or the SPRSTOK license plate. Little details that add specialness to these models even if they do not possess the finesse of other premium models that use plastic lights for example. It doesn’t matter that the lights are painted on because they have done such a great job on the tampo press.

Autoworld has pretty much done every single version of the Dodge Challenger, and this just adds to that nice long list. If you don’t already have a collection of Challengers from AW you need to start building it now starting with this perfect piece.

I’m sorry we usually don’t compare however, when you see a GULF Corvette your mind goes straight to Hotwheels. Well, for us the hotwheels is a hard pass in comparison to this. Apart from all the glorious extras you automatically get with AW cars, I personally feel they do the GULF livery colours on 1/64 better than their close competition.

CASTING REMARKS ONE64

One of the biggest protagonists in the GULF colour scheme is the light blue and if the right ‘light’ is not achieved it makes the orange look a little insipid. Take a look at all the GULF cars from Hotwheels.

Auto World instead have achieved a nice deep light blue that better represents the brand colors and it is really wonderful watching this baby streak across the desk in the famous livery a lot of us collectors really like to get our hands on.

It was a performance of V8 powered cars from around the world. As automatic as a Pontiac Grand Prix gearbox we think American when V8 is mentioned but this was a plethora of FERRARI’s, PORSCHES and even certain MERCEDES’ that carried the V8 badge all shouting aggressively at each other with their minders sitting in the cock pit nursing heavy right feet.

In terms of atmosphere, it was a lovely Saturday with a large but not over the top of car enthusiasts who had turned up for a day of motoring fun. Essentially the series isn’t so much of a show and tell as much as it is a series of race events where PRO and AM drivers are able to pit their hobby machines against each other or just having a good gas on the track. For some it was a day of testing their machines and times on the track or just honing their racing skills. One of the interesting things I saw was a young lady moving from her wheelchair into the driver’s seat of a competing PORSCHE Cayman S. I made note of the name stickered on the back and with further research I found out that Nathalie McGloin is the only female tetraplegic driver in the world and was the first woman to earn her racing license in the UK with spinal injury. I felt honoured to have seen in person and then find out about her racing achievements despite the heavy challenges she has had to face. nathalie

In a world full of oversized race kits and tuning body kits and while the younger collectors hit pre-order on every LBWK model available online more eclectic collectors search for cars with more of a history and back story. Concept cars, from the past, service cars from the past. Before the rage of collecting POLICE cars there were other rages for transport vans, branded trucks, double decker buses etc. And while the younger generation have their pick of the latest NISSAN monstrosity some collectors are definitely going to find the work of Automodello and some of the cars they have in their line up astounding.

First up, in terms of collectability these are real collector items that will definitely appreciate someone’s collection. These handmade resin models start off limited in number and usually Automodello doesn’t do repeats so the chances of seeing a model you like again once it’s sold out would be zero unless you bought it off someone for more. The second thing about Automodello is that they do cars no one else does at least I haven’t found anything to say otherwise. If you have watched American movies from the 1940’s you would definitely be treated to a taxi scene in some form or another and the chances that it would have been a Checker Model A taxi would be very high. The Checker Models were so synonymous with being taxi’s that the checker design would appear on all taxi’s even if they were not a Checker made model. The cars themselves in terms of design were quite over the top like Victorian chandeliers in low-income apartments. Lots of chrome and grills, long noses that housed massive engines that weighed way more than the power they produced. But they were also magnificent the way they just lumbered on carrying passenger to and from within their massive and spacious interiors.

We’ve been here before in a larger scale, and we raved at how awesome it was to have in a large scale. But, there are various reasons why 1/18 cars are not a priority or regular buy in many countries across the globe. Shipping larger means more expensive, coupled with insane tax rates prices hitting almost double the price of the model. Then, there is the whole space problem. After a while your collection will start to encroach into other rooms like a vine desperately trying to root-in its existence.

So, 1/18… not always the popular choice. What collectors do find as a good in between scale, is 1/43. Most companies feel the packaging could also double up as the display box and most of the 1/43 boxes are stackable. This provides an easy storage option for a lot of the cars you may want.

Like this OLD & NEW RestoMod 997 Porsche which appeared in a gorgeous 1/18 scale model and now for the more space and budget conscious we have the car in 1/43 scale by TARMAC WORKS. TARMAC WORKS are consistently bringing some really models to the forefront and their 1/43 catalogue has increased heavily over the past year especially with tuners from RWB, LBWK and in this case OLD&NEW. The detail also proves how serious these guys are with this line. Even though the cars (and vans) are sealed the interiors are well detailed. Equal attention has been given for both exterior and interior design. So when you look through the window you get to appreciate the whole car which is what collector models should do for the collector, provide the holistic experience right down to looking through the windows.

Unfortunately, due to advertising restriction

TARMAC WORKS cannot release the car and advertise it with the livery of one famous tobacco brand on which the colours of this 997 is based on. In the past they have been a long-term sponsor of PORSCHE’s Motorsport and an important part of Porsche’s colourful livery history but because of modern advertising regulations you have to add the branding on, the car yourself. This requires the patience and steady hand of a surgeon. The water transfer stickers come included.

AUTOMODELLO

THIS IS A CAR THAT HOLDS NO PLACE IN MODERN MOTORING. IT WOULD NOT FIT DOWN MANY ROADS, IT WOULD TAKE A SMALL TANKER TO KEEP IT HYDRATED AND THE EMISSIONS FOR THAT ENGINE WOULD BE OFF THE MODERN-DAY CHARTS.

CASTING REMARKS ONE24

BUT LOOK AT THAT BEAUTY!

I can see why people from that generation believe in taking time out to appreciate form over function. Luxury was abundant, who wanted small and crampy when you could have a ride that fit the whole wide world in the boot and then some. The Buick Skylark was an example of this excessiveness being the top of Buicks line exhausting all luxurious options available to a car at the time. Also, the 54’ Skylark was also at the top of its game in terms of best value for money. With an improved engine this big lady had a decent 200 hp churned out of Buick’s ‘Nailhead’ 332 Cubic V8 and mounted on shorter more advanced frame and design compared to its predecessor.

Hand crafted, painted and built the 1/24 scale model is testament to the brands craftmanship because this is an absolutely beautiful specimen. The LIDO Green paintwork is perfect as is the crafting of all the various chrome work this car has which is very extensive. Details are immaculate and very indicative of what the price tag on one of these must be like. But this is a serious model vintage car collectors cup of tea. It is meant to be exquisite. Every body line, groove, grille, light even door handle has obviously been carefully considered and attached without any mistakes whatsoever. And those wheels most definitely pass our benchmark for ‘absolutely gorgeous’. 15 Inch Kelsey Hayes wire wheels wrapped up in those white walls and you have yourself a shelf stunner.

BUICK SKYLARK

IF THERE EVER WAS A MODEL YOU PUT ON YOUR SHELF AND EVERY TIME SOMEONE ENTERS THE ROOM THEY GRAVITATE TO IT, THIS IS THAT MODEL. It is striking in every way, so striking that it will turn heads and start discussions. Great discussions anchored around motor vehicles, colour, and design. Since the car is a convertible, we also have the pleasure of getting to see the inside of this car even though it is a sealed resin model and it comes with convertible top in black that feels like leather which gives you the option of covering up as well on display. Limited Edition? Yes, very, so get your rare 1954 Buick Skylark.

AS

THE

DEMAND FOR BIG THIRSTY ENGINES

BEGAN TO WANE THE TIDE FOR AMERICAN MUSCLE STARTED TO CHANGE.

In Europe massive engines were relegated to supercars that were trying to break speed barriers but for the rest of us motorists we were starting to feel the squeeze. The lack of space for big cars, rising petrol costs, rising taxes, it was starting to add up. The solution? Smaller cars with smaller engine displacement but higher number of valves for more combustion tuned to perfection.

The Japanese car designers were the best at this, and they were gaining ground globally with there KEI cars and European designed sports cars. Worse, they were creeping into the American market some of them under the guise of Americanised names.

CASTING REMARKS ONE24

Pontiac see’s the writing on the wall for the Firebirds and Camaro’s and they also see Corvette is having a great time in sales. So, the PONTIAC design team put together a little mechanical alchemy and converted a V6 2.8L engine to be able to be mid-mounted shortening the wheelbase and increasing centre of gravity adding a plastic moulded body and suspension taken from other models the FIERO was born.

Light, fast, nimble, and best of all cheap! A formula so good the FIERO outsold the Corvettes AND the Firebird making it one of their all-time top selling models. By 1988 PONTIAC has fine tuned the FIERO and launched FIERO GT which became the best but also the rarest of the FIERO line. By then the Japanese car industry had steam rolled into the US and were dropping tiny, quick, and cheap cars like flies.

AUTOMODELLO

AUTOMODELLO’s

presentation of their 1/24 models beats everyone else hands down and really if they put so much care into the packaging of this piece, they you know for sure the model is going to be stunning. The model comes in a hardboard, velvet lined, clamshell box with a ribbon that runs under the model’s baseplate. This is because the base fits tightly into the grove in the box making sure the car doesn’t shake in anyway during transport. The

ribbon helps to lift the baseplate out of the groove. You can unscrew the car off the plate but it is a nightmare to put back and the car is made out of resin so it feels like if you force it too much you can damage the bodywork.

The build quality and detail though is truly par excellence’. Flawless casting with everything correct in terms of detail. Light fitment is perfect, the badging where you can see it is fine, its beautifully painted and clear coated with now overpaint. The Pontiac Firebird wheels painted in black definitely signals the fact that this car is the biproduct of engineering from other PONTIACS.

The T-Top roof comes with the cover, so you can display topless or not if you want to. Finally, the value of this model also comes from the fact that these are highly limited handmade and hand painted cars so yes you can expect to pay a steep price for a perfect 1/24 model. And don’t forget your certificate of ownership and authenticity which comes with all Automodello models. Something you will want to keep as safe as the model.

SOLIDO

ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIGHT!!!! THIS IS THE SORT OF FIGHT CLUB WE LIKE TO SEE. A showdown of SUPRA’s in the office courtesy of SOLIDO! In all their wisdom the design team over there decided that two NOT ONE but two Supra’s needed the street fighter treatment, and the collectors need it and that is all there is to say on the matter.

CASTING REMARKS ONE24

Up first and we have the new contender a GR SUPRA in Chilli Red, super spicy this would come with about 5 chillies on a menu its so hot. It honestly doesn’t look like a SOLIDO model it looks more like we are playing in bigger leagues in terms of details. If you look closely at the lights, you will see that there has been no shaming and the designers have got the LED strips within the lights modelled with great detail.

The aero package parts like the splitters, spoiler and side splitters look real. The wheels in gun metal grey do not look plastic like at all, they actually look like magnesium forged rims coupled with slotted discs and red brake calliper behind the rim.

SOLIDO
CASTING REMARKS ONE24 TOYOTA SUPRA GR ONE24

But sometimes you are a hardcore fan who believes that old is gold and if it ain’t broke then don’t try to fix it. So, you would take a MKIV over the newer GR Supra any day. Why not especially when it’s got this stunning metallic purple paint job with gloss black TE7 rims and 90’s disc brakes. Street Fighter Solido has you covered!

This is also the most famous version of SUPRA model sold in the US. You can go for a white option or red option that has been released in the past by SOLIDO but this purple version looks like it is strongly deep inside the ‘cool’ zone.

When you line the two of them up its plain to see that they should not be separated in any way and should definitely be picked up together and displayed together like a pair of MMA siblings (getting severe Boondock vibes). Ready to rumble? For SOLIDO it looks they are ready rumble and rock and roll for these two it looks like “The first rule of Fight Club is, you don’t talk about Fight Club”

1972 CHRYSLER PLYMOUTH GTX

AUTOWORLD

Chryslers line of Plymouth cars have been a list of hits and misses. But within their illustrious history of innovations and concept cars there have been a few that dotted the brands history with greatness. The Barracuda, The Fury and even a rebadged Starion called the Conquest. But one that was heralded as one of the greats was the PLYMOUTH GTX line also known as the Road Runner.

19CHRYSLER PLYMOUTH GTX ONE18

And it played well into that moniker right from the start all the way to the last model which is the 1972 PLYMOUTH GTX. There are plenty of little nuggets around the car that show its homage to the popular Waner Brothers character. On the engine lid, at the back with the badging, even the steering wheel had a little Road Runner head where the “BEEP BEEP’ is supposed to be. All faithfully recreated in this fantastic 1/18 scale model that has just been released. Autoworld has been in the 1/18 game for a while now and you really can’t go wrong with them. They literally write the book on doing American Made muscle with opening parts and really great details in terms of engine and interior.

REPRESENTING THE 440 MODEL 4-BARREL ENGINE THIS 72’ PLYMOUTH COMES IN A LOVELY GRAND CANYON RED WITH STEERABLE BFGOODRICH TYRES, NICE CHROME PLATING ON THE CHROME PARTS AND OF COURSE A PERFECT CASTING OF THE CAR’S BODY SHAPE.

For those of you who haven’t had and AW car in the past you will be excited to know that it’s an all-opening parts model. The interior is white and moulded to look like the leather padded seats of the 70’s the dashboard has that classic wood trim with silver tachometer frames set inside the cluster panel. You can even see the window winders in the doors. This thing is oozing with details. Take a peek under the hood and inside is the famous 440 engine with a bright red 4 barrel carburettor leading into the bright blue engine block. The rear boot lid opens as well and inside it you can find a spare trye. The steel stock wheels look like real steel rims and don’t have that plastic chrome shine to them which is awesome.

CASTING REMARKS ONE12

At 1/12 scale the sight of this model will give you goose bumps every time you see it. First things first. Why did Automodello choose this car apart from its beauty to be their flagship 1/12 scale car? The brand Automodello specializes in making collectors dreams come true with 1/43, 1/24 and 1/12 scale resin models of some of the most beautiful and quintessential cars ever made in American Motor and motorsport history. Dan Gurneys AAR made Weslake V12 powered Eagle is both quintessential and beautiful.

AUTOMODELLO

THE HISTORY

Like all good innovations this one started with a challenge. While FORD was charging forward at LeMans flying the American Flag at finish line plans were underfoot to take Formula 1 by storm with an all-American dream. American Driver in an American Car racing for an American Team. And there was one person that could lead the charge. That was Dan Gurney.

CASTING REMARKS ONE12

THE CAR

BUILT BY ANGLO AMERICAN RACERS

this car was built specifically for Dan Gurney to take part in Formula 1. The riveted monocoque ended with an eagle like beaked radiator nose is still referred to today as one of the most beautiful Formula 1 Cars ever made. Painted in Imperial blue the body work and chassis were simple and sleek as well as incredibly light. But the lightness came at a cost. Having being made out of both titanium and magnesium the car had potential to turn into a fireball a really big dangerous fireball. The suspension was mounted directly on to the monocoque body and consisted of a lower wishbone and single top link for each wheel, this is something you can see in great detail on the scale model.

AUTOMODELLO
EAGLE WESLAKE ONE18

THE ENGINE

POWERING THIS GORGEOUS TRACK BIRD OF PREY WAS AN AUBREY WOODS DESIGNED WESLAKE V12 THAT GENERATED 450 BHP THE ENGINE PROVED A MONSTER BUT UNFORTUNATELY OTHER PARTS GRAFTED IN TO USE WITH THE ENGINE WOULD FAIL CONTINUOUSLY MAKING THE RELIABILITY LOW ON THE EAGLE.

THE MODEL

At 1/12 scale this is the perfect size to appreciate this car in it entirety. It comes in a beautiful acrylic display case but when you sleep it off you get the chance to admire the beauty of the paintwork, the details seen in the engine, and remember as more cars begin going electric models won’t have anything to look forward to under the hood. This has a full on V12 engine at the back in all its 1/12 scale glory. Even the exhaust pipes have been heated to discolour due to excessive heat temps.

This model is one of the most beautifully crafted models I have ever seen in my life and as an F1 fan I have been extremely excited and honoured to have this in the office. It is perfect, everything about it is perfect. Rich history, rich in technology and in the case of this being a model

CASTING REMARKS ONE12
SUPER RICH in DETAIL.

AUTOMODELLO

THIS IS A MODEL THAT HAS BEEN BUILT FOR MOTORSPORT AFICIONADOS AND HARDCORE FORMULA 1 FANS WITH ONLY 99 ON THE MARKET THIS DOES COME WITH A SUPER SERIOUS PRICE TAG ONE THAT YOU MAY NEED CHECKING ON A REGULAR BASIS IN CASE THERE IS A PRICE DROP OF AVAILABILITY DROP. BUT THIS WILL BE EVERY CENT SAVED FOR A GREAT CAUSE AND AMAZING CAUSE A CAUSE THAT MAY NEVER COME AROUND AGAIN.

His list of credits and victories would require a large manual and loads of reading time but something we highly recommend. Dan Gurney is a legend in racing who has seen the development of some of the most amazing sports cars during his time in the 60s and 70s he was one of the amazing drivers whose input into the car’s development was crucial. He understood the physics of racing and developed his own style to racing. He also understood the mechanics of running a sport and wrote a famous white paper for the Americans on how to run their league. Heavily revered Dan Gurney is one of the alltime greats.
