EDITORS NOTES By now you may have guessed or very correctly heard that CastHeads magazine has decided to go monthly from this year onwards.

After a whirlwind that was January 2021 (why? Because it was a month of picking up the pieces of 2020) we are back with the second issue of the year.

Exciting stuff obviously but there will be their teething issues which we will correct as fast as possible. What has prompted this insanity on our part?

My partners and I are excited for this year. So many things are happening and its only going to get better for CastHeads Magazine and its readers, or Castheads as we like to think of you.

We want to keep up with the new releases that keep getting churned out everyday as well keep you posted about some of the older releases you may have missed or couldn’t get at the time. 2020 was an interesting year we saw an explosion in photography, toy sales, model collecting, models truly wild. And the great news is, it continues into 2021. We have been in touch with all our partner brands and they are as excited as us to work together to bring you guys more awesome stuff for the new year. So sit back, relax, stay calm and read the new February Issue!

Nigel

Monthly issues, social media channels brimming with new releases and brands stepping up their game with totally new offerings for the new year. We saw a lot of Toy/Game fairs around the world being canceled, while it was a sad time for many who looked forward to connecting with others from their field, it also brought with it a silver lining, the fans got to see new releases much faster, brands HAD to reconnect with their customers (which was sourly lacking) and things kicked up a notch with product presentations. Now go on and finish this issue, tell us what you think and get ready for the next. Its going to be a fun ride.

1977 Pontiac Trans Am Firebird

The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was a pony car designed to compete with the likes of Mustangs and Cougars. Released in 1967, this model stuck around till about 2002. We have a special soft spot for the muscular 1977 Pontiac Trans Am Firebird iterations, and the Jada Toys Big Time Muscle Wave 160 is no exception. The gold metalflake paint job with the black Phoenix (or Screaming Chicken according to some) makes this a really nice model. Opening bits and pieces adds to the charm of the model. Goes nicely next to the 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am 'Smokey and The Bandit' Hollywood Rides edition and the white with the gold paint. Scale 1:24 Status: Available

Renntransporter Martini Racing At the start of the 50s, racing was getting more complex and professional. And teams started realising that it was better to transport the cars from race to race rather than having them driven all over Europe. Thus was born the race transport. Companies like Robert Schenk used to convert Mercedes buses and trucks to properly livered vehicles. The Martini Racing version will be released by Schuco sometime this year. This is going to look great next to their existing Martini Racing liveried Porsches. Scale 1:64 Status: Coming Soon

First is this Coach, featuring the team livery, logo and 'Home' uniform color combo. This will be an ideal gift for a PSG fan, and the rest of the items to arrive will be great additions Scale 1:64ish Status: January 2021

1963 Aston Martin DB5 'No Time to Die' Bond, James Bond. Zooms into cinemas this year. This would be the 25th outing for this suave man of action. And again along for the ride is the very trusty Gatling-gun and gadgets filled Aston Martin DB5. This car has seen many action sequences with Bond since its appearance in 1964's 'Goldfinger' This iteration features action damage along the sides and bullet holes on the windshield and window mirrors. This is a really good addition to the rest of the more cleaner James Bond models released by Hot Wheels in both its Premium, Entertainment and basic lines since 2014. They also released the model in 'Goldfinger' and 'Skyfall' Retro Entertainment/basic versions in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Scale: 1:64 Status: Released

1963 Aston Martin DB5 'No Time To Die' IF you want a model with a bit more detail and size, Corgi Toys got you covered. This larger scale has great detail of the "battle" damage and bullet holes, plus the Gatling guns are show from the retracted headlight openings. Rebuilt by Q by the conclusion of Spectre, the iconic Aston Martin DB5 returns again in No Time To Die. This DB5 features a brand new Italian registration plate, and this classic is never far away from the inevitable action that follows James Bond wherever he goes. Scale 1:36 Status: Available

Dacia Duster Mk2 Gendarmerie 2019 The Dacia (or Renault) Duster is surely one of the most popular compact SUVs in the market today. Solido brought you the civilian version last year in a bronze brown and now present it in the blue and white livery of the national security force. VOLVO V60 1st GENERATION - MATCHBOX - SUPERFAST - SCALE 1/64

From the final throes of the superfast series (from this year it has changed) which will no longer be in existence comes another one of VOLVO’S classic sports wagons. The V60. There have been many iterations of this car in real life and they have all be made to go very fast with great big engines. Which was something to be said about the brand that is known for its safety.

VOLVO has been enjoying a resurgence of popularity in the diecast world of late. Collectors have been demanding and the supply has been forthcoming with new releases from various brands starting from 1/18 and trickling down to 1/64.

The Matchbox version is a premium car so there is the clamshell packaging with storage box for later use. The car has front and rear tampos as well as decorative branding around the sports theme and finally of course the reason why they are called superfast, the rubber wheels. The rubber wheels give great grip and more speed on a smooth surface.

MERCEDES 190E This has been called one of the most beautiful 1/64’s out now by the global diecast community. And, we can totally understand why. Solid, uncomplicated, clean lines and plenty detail that culminates into the admirable three-pointed star hood ornament astounded us like a leopard jumping out of your car when you’re trying to go to work (surprise Mutha@#%$#!!!) This is one of MINI GT’s classiest acts so far for the year and looking at some of the up coming models this looks to be a good year for TSM. DODGE

D100 87’ HOTWHEELS - MAINLINE SCALE 1/64

Hotwheels and the performance brand K&N have enjoyed a great relationship over the years and both brands together have dropped some lovely castings. And, with so many variations on offer collection of K&N livery cars has evolved into a sub culture of collecting much like MOMO and FALKEN.

The latest release is the chunky BAJA support truck in the shape of a DODGE D100. This has a wicked color scheme, big chunky 4x4 wheels and looks hella mean even in 1/64 scale. Complete with hood array of lights and black crash bar this icon stands proudly towering over the rest of the cars and has such presence. In fact, the last time Hotwheels dropped something as cool as this it was the FALKEN Toyota truck. Now the Toyota got itself a STH version as well and additionally K&N livery cars in Hotwheels have made the STH cut many times. Considering the sort of paint options HW’s could go with alone boggles the mind. Add front Tampos on the headlights and hood lights and this could go from hero to SUPERHERO easily.

GRAN TORINO HOTWHEELS - MAINLINE SCALE 1/64

Even Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino wasn’t as cool as the K&N ones from Hotwheels! So far, the K&N line has been filled with great cars and designs but there are a few that have become VHTF (very hard to find) and of course it’s the more exotic looking versions. Like, this Gran Torino in sky blue. The easiest variation to find of this car is the white version but the blue is considerably harder to get with average prices ranging between USD 7 to around USD 10 for a carded model. Which if you consider this is a 2013 release, is a pretty good appreciation of value.

Of course, if you’re are lucky enough to come across a Super Treasure hunt version you will be treated to a beautiful shade of spectra flame blue, rubber wheels with deeper rims and the livery extends on to the hood. Prices for this range between USD 25 to USD 40

INNER CITY LIFE Volkswagen Crafter

Every city needs private transport even if it’s a bit car pool-ish. Great add would be this VolksWagen Crafter, bright red with a city skyline in line art painted on the sides. The opening part on this, is the side door which slides open and closed. You can’t get better details than this on the same price point which is to say the details are pretty good.

With more possible stay at home orders on the horizon for many, it may be tempting to re-create what life used to be with your very own inner city life diorama. You may definitely have the time to let your creativity and love for the city go and manifest itself into ‘Yourmetropolis’. Thankfully our friends over at Majorette have an entire range of vehicles suited to make sure your dream city is well populated.

Renault Kangoo Not too sure about the name but it’s a nice little addition to the service sector in ‘YourVille’. A little DHL van with opening back door. You could easily buy a delivery man figurine and some scale boxes to go with your diorama. Possibly even boxes of new models being delivered. It is also the electric delivery van version. Progressive, you will be hailed as.

VW T1 Food Truck This truck also provides packing services on a small scale, delivers and provides service to the customers with a smile. No city is complete without their street food. And that’s why you will need one of Majorettes yummy VW food trucks that come complete with serving side opening and menu for your Tacos’. If you are a VW T1 fan you should be having a lot of cool versions from Majorette.

CASTING REMARKS

The VALUE FOR MONEY FERRARI It seems that since the TLVN craze (and those prices) the demand for 1/64 Ferrari’s have stepped up a notch leaving hardcore 1/64 fans scrambling hard to save what ever they can to get their hands on of those lusty TLVN’s. But if you can look past needing a detailed engine and just go with a detailed exterior there is a cheaper alternative. Kyosho

One great thing about Kyosho is that they are a plenty if you know where to go and how to get them which eliminates the mad rush to own one before anyone else does. So you can collect Kyoshos at your leisure.

Build wise they are excellent much like this F333 SP in black with five spoke wheels in white. Mildly detailed engine rear with dual silencers and painted lights but fabulously sculptured mold which won’t break the bank like a FERRARI TLVN

TLVN GARAGE A big shout out to JL Hobbies Malaysia for sending us this awesome TLVN set. The black Honda Civic was released as a separate model under the TLVN range and of course the details as usual are impeccable. But what we really like about this is the DOCH Valve markings in gold on the side. That is the sort of detail that takes us back to our Wonder years.

The blue Civic however is part of a more exciting package and true fun for a true collector. The Blue Civic came as part of the TLVN Garage which features a 4 post lift, 2 fire extinguishers, welding tank, air pump and figure.

None of the numerical nonsense seen across the Pacific, like 2JZ’s and RB2’s no no, the engine that the Lancia 037 sported was called a ‘Lampredi’. This was the most anticipated car of the collection and that’s because these are not easily found in 1/64 scale. When Ford came to LeMans they weren’t messing around. They came with a champ and left as champions not just on one but many occasions. Even beating the pants off the domineering team Ferrari. This particular car was the winner at LeMans 1969 driven by Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver

CASTHEADS FEATURE

This is not Solido’s first GT40 and to be honest it really seems like they have had a lot of practice building these. Dressed in gulf colors the car sits really low on the tires with a pair of really fat ones on the rear giving the car more traction for that all American torque.

Opening doors reveal a decently dressed interior, realistic looking lights surround the car and of course a great eye for detail on reproducing this icon from 1969. In the final 3 hours of the race this Ford and Porsche raced head to head until Porsche finally conceded handing victory to the Ford

The Whale of Le Mans...

CASTHEADS FEATURE CASTHEADS MAGAZINE

FEBRUARY 2021

The Porsche 935 series was one of the most prolific racing machines to ever take part in LeMans. It looked nothing like previous Porsches that had taken part in Motorsports most of them being a 911 derivative or variant. The last of the 935’s was seen in 1978 and was developed solely for the purpose of competing in Le Mans.

CASTHEADS FEATURE

The long tail that earned the cars moniker ‘Moby Dick’ was optimized for low drag as the car’s engine was optimized to pump out a whopping 750-850 Hp. Even though this was one of the most perfect speed machines ever built, Renault managed to hold sway and win the 1978 Le Mans title and then subsequently narrowed their race options down to F1.

I love the fact that this was one of the cars Solido chose to recreate under their new S Competition Line because up until now this model was relegated to being produced by higher more expensive scale model brands. Its great that Solido chooses to put some real racing classics into the hands of their mid-range collectors.

CASTHEADS FEATURE CASTHEADS MAGAZINE

I do not think there has ever been a Porsche more perfectly designed and so dominant in the motorsport circuit as the 956. It truly was a machine to behold with hidden aerodynamic wonders and looking deceptively slow. Also, probably one of the most iconic Porsche Racers to hit the scene since the RSR Turbo.

FEBRUARY 2021

Either way in the hands of LeMans veteran Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell this car was unstoppable and unbeatable in in 1982. This wasn’t a car built to go fast, this was pure speed housed in a car’s body.

CASTHEADS FEATURE

Tested and trained in Weissach where Porsche’s lab of speed is located the 956 was not just revolutionary in speed but also revolutionary in both reliability and fuel efficiency which really threw this model into ‘halo’ status of the 80’s. Not only had Porsche brought something dominant is speed but also in technology that would see its way into future Porsche models. Winning the 1982 LeMans in such a dominant fashion with the top three places in the bag left Porsche with a long order list to fill for the next year’s race. 10 teams raced the 956 in 1983 and 9 of them finished in the Top Ten. 1983 was truly the year of the 956.

Made by Solido to celebrate Porsche in LeMans is the 956 that took the winning cup in 1982 driven by Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell who started in pole position and maintained their track lead throughout the 24 hours. Opening doors are unfortunately the only opening parts but like ‘Moby Dick’ it is a real treat to be able to get this particular model in 1/18 scale and at a stunning price.

FEBRUARY 2021

A winner in the LM GT1 circuit and holder of the title fastest production car in the 90’s the BMW powered McLaren F1 GTR was a nifty little combination of old school mechanics and space age technology and materials. For example, engineers relied on a natural aspirated engine and dry sump lubrication system combined with gold foil to reflect heat like NASA’s space shuttles. In fact, this car was just filled to the brim with carbon fiber, Kevlar, gold, aluminum and much more, at the end of its life this car could be stripped for precious metals.

CASTHEADS FEATURE

Another special point about this car was that it was built using a lot of data and information pulled from the McLaren Formula 1 racing program. This fed a lot of the design factors and dictated many of the form and function features of the car, like the centered driver’s position. With an all this racing pedigree behind it the McLaren went on to dominate series and living up to its roots. 1995 was particularly a great year for the McLaren at Le Mans which resulted in a win in its debut production year.

This release by Solido is from the 1996 Le Mans race where the McLaren didn’t dominate as Porsche decided to fight back, but again decent results not to mention some good-looking Gulf Liveries on these tiny packages of trouble. This particular car No.33 placed 9th in the LMGT1 category and was driven by Ray Bellam, James Weaver and JJ Lehto

THRILLED TO THE MOON AN BACK

First a quick history lesson since we have the page space. Between the 70’s & 90’s South East Asians and Asians were known to have big families that lived and moved together. Some were confined to a small house and some families built entire neighborhoods. Needless to say the European idea of a ‘city’ car would not fly in the face of 15 relatives getting ready for a religious pilgrimage or market. So, vans were a big deal.

That’s what the JDM punters are going to be when these new “WTH IS

TARMAC DOING?!?!?!?”

releases drop soon. But really, this seem like a far cry from the usual TARMAC WORKS fare, what’s the deal?

GARAGE TORQUE CASTHEADS MAGAZINE

These rodded out Toyota Hiace Vans are going to be the next big hit for Tarmac Works. We can already here the furious clicking of Van Fan Boys desperately trying to secure a pre-order of their lovable childhood transporter blended with the hot-rod culture to create a unique tuner series that only Tarmac Works could conceive.

FEBRUARY 2021

When Felix was asked about the Mooneyes collaboration he said, that Mooneyes was such a big part of his childhood and a lot of the ideas that Tarmac Works innovates stems from those nostalgic memories. So what if we get brain freeze on the stupendous blend and blindly hand all our money over to Tarmac Works.

I love tuner cars, they will always be the epitome of cool and an insane creative outlet for mechanics, car painters and car enthusiasts. It’s always amazing to watch how some of these cars come together on reality shows and I’m always thinking of ways to give my car the tuner update, but it isn’t a cheap hobby and not everyone can make serious cash street racing. Next best thing… Get some JDM TUNERS from JADA!

This new white RX-7 Effini has been given the treatment by US based tuner group known as M2-Motoring. In addition having their own brand aero kits they also stock a gazillion other brands that can turn your jalopy into an APOLLO 13 beating time travel machine with a bit of boost to spare. JADA went and took one of their inspired cars and shrunk it down to 1/24 sale to sit proudly on my desk. I love the way it looks, I love the colour combination and most of all I love the stance. JADA have got it just right dropping the car so low without looking like the wheels are too small for the arches. I also love how JADA has solved the problem of different shaped spoilers in mass production by making the spoilers slip onto the stands as opposed to being fixed. This means you can interchange and customize your spoilers AND more importantly less chance of permanent breakage. The other great feature about JADA cars is that they open up all around which makes it really great value for money. The other noticeable improvement is on the quality. JADA is moving towards appealing to a more mature and collectible audience which means better detail needs to be paid attention to. As far as I'm concerned though, this RX-7 has definitely hit a lot of high scoring points and it has found a place on my work table as my new desk buddy. The classic white gloss paint highlights the curves of the car and the additional trim colours are subtle making a great combination on this awesome car.

BENSOPRA

GT-R35 Another car that gets tuned and modified at every single twist and turn is of course the NISSAN GTR35. This car has been on the menu for every tuning arm in the world and of course JADA’s JDM Tuner line would seem incomplete without one. So, taking a leap from the casting that was done for Fast and the Furious on Brian’s Ben Sopra GTR here is a newer variation

It has been given a nice metallic blue paint job with highlights on the bonnet for some of the lines from the body kit. The front engine bay opens up completely with front hinges, chrome deep dish alloy wheels shine like Rhianna’s diamonds and a massive spoiler sticks out the back like a bicycle rack. This another great addition from JADA’s JDM Tuner line and in your GT-R collection.

FAST & FURIOUS

Resurrection Does anyone really die in Fast and Furious? The franchise that keeps coming back keeps bringing people back from the dead (except of course Brian).

Like terminators people keep coming back sometimes to find themselves sometimes to find their memories and in Han’s case he’s coming back to find his Veilside! This is not the first time a dead character has been brought back to life in the movies and to be honest it’s a great way to keep the merchandising going without having to re-tool stuff all the time.

COMEBACK CHANCES

Jesse

After getting shot by Johnny Tran in front of Dom’s house Jesse is ASSUMED dead. But an old lady finds him and drags him to her house where keeps him hidden for 20 years nursing him back to health. She finally dies leaving him her old Honda CIVIC Si which he uses to go look for Dom and team. Returns in F&F 15

Vince

After failing to be the anti-hero a second time Vince survives and leaves Brazil to return to the USA where he becomes a family food caterer. He buys a FORD Super Van and adds a HEMI engine to it so that he can deliver faster and more furious, because family, means everything.

For example, there are rumours that Han might be making a come back in the new F&F 9 coming out this year, which means it’s a great time for JADA to drop the new 1/24 scale Veilside RX-7. And to be honest this is such a cool looking body kit for the Mazda. The other cool thing about JADA is that their 1/24 scale is closer to 1/20 which means you can get more bang for you buck. Han’s Veilside features opening parts right round and of course great stance with low profile wrapped wheels. This thing is sooo street tuner that we had Tokyo Drift playing on the background during the shoot. As long as the F&F franchise is alive and kicking, I hope JADA keeps the license and we get more awesome cars from them in the future as well as the future of the franchise. Now its anyone’s guess as to what sort of cars to expect in the new instalment.

Giselle

Hans heartthrob may have committed career suicide with Wonder Woman but with the return of Han we may see Gal Gadot reprising her role as his sweetheart / drift lover.

My stories starts with me here in California USA, near Sacramento, where I live with my wife and our little dog. When I'm not drawing diecast cars, I'm thinking about drawing diecast cars while I work as a CNC machine operator at a construction company.

I have been an artist since I was a young child in the 1960s. My parents said that I rarely wanted to play with toys, that I mostly wanted pens and paper so I could draw. I eventually went to college for art and worked as a commercial artist for numerous outlets and publications and even at one point went on to become a tattoo artist and became quite successful at that. But when it came to my own personal art I never felt like I really found my niche or the thing that I like to draw and I was all over the place with various styles and subjects.

DIECARTIST

Then one day I discovered diecast racing on YouTube and through that discovered a whole culture of people who collect diecast cars of various kinds, race them and customize them. I've always loved cars and racing from the time I was young. Whenever I was the new kid in school I would make friends by drawing pictures of muscle cars and the boys would gather around and watch me draw and I would make friends.

Then one day as I was exploring this world of diecast collectors I was inspired to draw a picture of Hot Wheels cars racing on a track and I posted it in one of the bigger groups and the response was phenomenal. And I knew at that moment that I had found my niche. That was about 9 months ago, now my collection of diecast cars is up over 400 and my portfolio of car art is up to about 60. Many of them custom drawings for customers and some of them are just about cars in general, but I try to keep the main focus on diecast cars and racing. It's funny that most of the diecast cars attempt to look like real cars but when I draw them I try to let a little bit of their toyness show through, because at the end of the day diecast collecting and racing should be fun and toys remind me of fun.
