Hot Wheels ‘20 Toyota GR Supra

Jokingly called the BMW Toyota, this model is collaboration between both Toyota and BMW, designed by Toyota, but built in Austria, most of the mechanicals and underpinnings are closer to the G29 BMW Z4 than any Toyota platform. The model (designated A90) is quite popular in various sports, like endurance and drifting.

However, this isn’t the base GR Supra. Hot Wheels has designed it with the V1 Pandem bodykit . This is the first release, the second release is in bright yellow. If you are lucky, you might find an early prototype model that just has 20 Toyota Supra on it.

RE-DEFINING THE MODERN CLASSICS

Tarmac Works had a fantastic year in 2021 launching new cars, tooling’s, and building on collaborations making them one of the most vibrant brands for the year keeping us on our toes and wallets always empty. Now they end the year with more promises of personal bankruptcy where you can hear the echoes in your wallet. Both the release qualify as modern classics and we can’t wait for the drop.

GARAGE TORQUE CASTHEADS EXCLUSIVE

Though TARMAC WORKS calls this the 242 it looks more like a 242 GT with the racing body trim or what was known as racing body trim back in the late ’70s. Designed by Jan Wilsgaard it’s no surprise that this car has a certain design charm that has managed to remain evergreen over the decades. He was one of 25 designers who was nominated for Car Designer of the century. Now TARMAC WORKS brings it to 1/64 life adding a beautiful set of race rims into the mix.

If you were a Jackie Chan fan from childhood and your childhood involved the 80’s then you would have been one of the kids that wished your parents bought a Starion. The Starion was up there with the competition when it came out running with MAZDA RX’s and NISSAN Z’s, but it also had a very extensive motorsport history partaking in Rallies, GT Races, and Endurance series. A very underrated car that doesn’t get as much love as a TOYOTA Supra but was just as good both on the road and in the looks department. These were Mitsubishi’s fun times.

MAISTO

CHEVY FLATBED & CHEVELLE SS

2021 was definitely the year for trailers and haulers. And Maisto hauled in their big guns with the relaunch of the Muscle Machines brand complete with their own version of haulers and accompanying cars. They were bang on the money! We’ve seen the response and like overblown over hood superchargers it’s, HUGE!

Recently the postman who never knocks twice was chased down to retrieve a package from Maisto. Excitingly it’s another Muscle Machine trailer in bright blue, the sort of hue that would make Madonna sing “True Blue Baby I Love You”. Highlighted with yellow accents and white wall wheels this has pure good vibes like a long road and that perfect rock song playing so loud the hand cymbals bounce around inside your head. And of course, lots and lots of signature chrome-coated parts designed to dazzle in the sunlight.

There has been a consensus in the CastHeads office that this series should never be split up and the reason being it’s a collector’s collection. You can see here and in all our previous articles, the details however ‘tooned’ it looks are amazing and for those who like a little weight in their rides are not going to find this lacking in any way. Both truck and car glides across our Dream Customs XL Mouse Pads that designers, gamers, and 1/64 collectors love. No, seriously, it’s freaking fabulous!

Another point that a lot of collector’s care about these days is quality control and going through the whole series up until the latest releases and we have yet to find complaints ourselves or on Social Media. As we mentioned earlier all the reviews, we have encountered in numbers have been good to great. For those that rate it good are acquiring their taste for this style, but hardcore fans are loving it and have been clamoring for Maisto to return the brand back to its 1/18 glory. Maisto says they are sticking to 1/64 for now but seeing what they have coming, people hold on to your hats!

Every time at look at this car Freddy Mercury goes off in my head singing the line from Bohemian Rhapsody “Thunder Bolt of lightning very very frightening, Galileo, Galileo Figaro” now hopefully since I’ve got it down on digital paper I will be freed from this lyrical curse.

You cannot ignore this!! It’s the brightest thing you can put on your shelf, looks so radioactive it scared off Clarke Kent back to the Fort of Solitude. This is from Tarmac Works Global64 Range which does a larger variety of models and car brands and most importantly the wheels roll on

Admittedly they were one of the last to come to the party with a perfect product. This is another one of the best Mustangs you can get in 1/64 with details that look like a far larger scale car. We loved the grille and how pronounced it is with a high gloss finish for added effect. Carbon Fibre Highlights are always a

treat if done this well at this scale. And of course, we love the wheels. Great detail on the model we received and really great to see manufacturers getting better and better at nice precise detailing. 2022 is going to see a lot of improved casting and far greater details because the technology is moving in leaps and bounds. I would personally love to see this casting from MINI GT in a color not seen before.

CASTING REMARKS HOT PICKS FOR YOU

In all great American cop movies/shows the lead actors good/bad cops have hot law enforcement vehicles usually in the shape of some heavily tuned American Muscle with a dash of German and Italian thrown in occasionally. Personally, if I knew Ferrari would be part of the job description, I would have

This JADA Big Muscle Pontiac fits the bill in every way. For starters, it’s a lovely casting that sits well with JADA’s signature low stance they add to their models especially in the BIG TIME MUSCLE series and JDM TUNERS. Paintwork is your typical Highway Patrol black n’ white, protect and serve insignia on the doors, 911 emergency number on the rear quarter panels, and car number on the hood all in great detail. For us, the highlight is the deep-dish hot rod-styled wheels that look amazing.

Did this model of Pontiac ever make it into law enforcement? An intensive google search didn’t yield any results but Pontiacs was a preferred American brand of squad car from the ’50s through the ’70s with some of the more famous models being the LeMans and Catalina. Known for having brutal engines and being absolute workhorses, the Pontiacs were formidable chase cars.

MSZ’s Green Goblin

These guys have been making quite the splash over the last two years with a slew of models technically termed as toys, but these diecast models are anything but. Contrarily their models have been increasing in detail, quality reproduction and licensed

There aren’t many players in the 1/36 scale market with a lot of the newer brands concentrating on dominating the 1/64 scene. But there are collectors who like to have this odd scale and MSZ have quite a few models to offer in this area.

One of the cars we really liked coming out from their new range is this fantastic AUDI R8 Spyder in fluorescent green. Adding to how great this model looks overall there are a few features that make MSZ models unique. Interactive stuff. Working lights and sound effects, which have also seen improvement in quality.

SCALE 1/43 DIECAST METAL

AUDI R8
CASTING REMARKS HOT PICKS FOR YOU

The only downside with those kinds of features for hardcore collectors is storage. Most of the time these cars will end up on display and that means forgetting about the battery resulting in dead or leaky batteries or the batteries getting taken out negating the use of that feature completely. Yet, we see a lot of diecast photography where things like lights have been added in the post which means you can take some cool shots.

Talking price point, this is not expensive at all, and we bring this up because for a song you get a pretty detailed model with electronic fittings and every effort has been made to make this look much more than what it is deemed to be. Fortunately, it’s a Spyder and we don’t need to judge this book by the cover. If this is what MSZ labels a toy

with that sort of interior detail, then sign me up eyes closed if they expand into what they call collectibles.

More compliments on the rest of the car. The wheels look pretty good, maybe needs the AUDI logo in the center is an easy addition to make and it would really add to the overall look. There are a few things that could be given a bit more attention. Like the silencer tips for example could have been painted silver to have a bit of contrast at the back. If we were to classify this in collectors’ terms this would be perfect for a budget collector or someone starting out as a collector or even just an AUDI fan who would like a nice sporty model on their desk. If all else fails it would also act as a good deterrent to your children away from the really good stuff.

And it’s the most legit-looking Mercedes Transporter in 1/64. As some would say ‘Period Correct’

I have had these two cars around longer than the magazine and one of those impulse buys I have been happy about. The brand is an old school brand from Hong Kong and though these come as 1/72 they look more like 1/64 which, is why we tagged them so. SWEET DREAMS BY ITALDESIGN

‘Bella Figura’ is a term used in Italy that directly translates to ‘beautiful figure’. But, in Italy, it means more than just that. It’s a commitment to style, class, and beauty in everything Italian.

In fact, their website says that they have been involved with the production of so many cars and car brands that anyone would have sat in at least one of their designs. So, I checked, and I was shocked. It’s true.

So, they call up Nissan and go, “hey we’d like to show you an idea we had for your Halo Brand”. Nissan looked at it and said, “we can put a NISMO engine in that”. 2019 came around 50 versions of this gorgeous amalgamation of two incredibly disciplined worlds was given birth to and the world was blessed.

GT Spirit has spared no tears and effort to bring you a perfect replica I SAID PERFECT, version of this car. And honestly, this is one of those models where resin outshines diecast. It’s an intricate body shape and that’s where the beauty lies, in fact under the bonnet of the actual car there is more engine cover than the engine. I poured over pictures online on the ITALDESIGN site for hours comparing the model and it is

cohorts over at Chevrolet came up with the name ‘FireBird’ I bet they never guessed how powerful that name and symbol would mean to speed, rebellion, and all-round bad boy attitude. To this day, the Trans Am FireBird represents pure machismo in the auto world.

This is the Trans AM that became GM’s cash cow in the late ’70s and set the stage for more Trans AM greatness in years to come. Released in 1977 with a completely new facelift the Trans AM F-Body had been transformed into a more beautiful form that was suddenly appealing to movie directors and stars. No car captured the screen like Bandit’s Trans AM Firebird. Once that movie hit the theatres orders went through the roof and people didn’t care so much about what engine package they got, they just wanted the big screaming chicken on the hood.

FROM THE ASHES THE ICON THAT LIVES FOREVER

Smokey and the Bandit burnt that reckless, charming law-breaking image into people’s hearts and minds and suddenly GM had an unprecedented demand for ‘Firebirds’ and were finding it hard to keep up with production although there was no complaint when the money started rolling through. This car is so iconic that it still graces the screen in music videos, Hollywood movies, and TV series. Like a Phoenix, it keeps on rising over and over again.

ARTICLE CASTHEADS EXCLUSIVE

SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT

This one has been in JADA’s portfolio for a long time and for good reason. It is one of the more popular castings next to another famous Trans AM modified to talk, drive by itself, and jump over obstacles. As a hardcore Bandit fan, I really wanted to get my hands on one of these first for the nostalgia it brings me, and secondly, it’s a great all-opening version of this awesome car. You have the honeycombshaped rims, the familiar Pontiac Badging all around and of course the flaming bird on the bonnet that opens, and as a hardcore fan I have no complaints.

STEPHEN KING’S IT

What’s better than getting a Pontiac Firebird 77’ model? Getting two! As we mentioned earlier the 1977 Trans Am continues to be the star on screen all the up to 2019 where it had been seen in the Fast and Furious franchise, Netflix’s Stranger Things series, and finally in the remake of Stephen King’s Horror/Thriller IT. Or is it? Probably it was the cost of a new casting or JADA wasn’t given the license but interestingly the movie ‘IT’ 2019 features Henry Bowers driving a 1981 facelifted Firebird, not a 1977 model. It was another Stephen King movie that featured a 1977 Firebird, which was Sleepwalkers. So if you got this pretty cool blue version of the JADA Firebird and then watched the movie now you know why something seems amiss.

STEPHEN KING’S IT

In addition to this great shade of blue with ‘Firebird’ emitting a gas flame Trans Am and scary looking Henry Bower, you also get a really solid ‘Pennywise’ Clown diecast figure to add to the collection of macabre. If you didn’t like clowns previously then you really won’t like this and will have trouble finding a place for this far away from home.

SMOKEY & THE BANDIT

In contrast, with the Smokey and the Bandit, trans am you get a proper southwest belt buckle in brass with the ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ logo embossed on with other embellishments. Now I need to get a belt and Burt Reynolds smile to go with my very first Texan belt buckle.

I think it’s safe to say, regardless of what movies or show it’s been in, the very first appearance obviously captured the magic that made this car and put it directly into the hearts of car lovers and the fantasies of teenage kids around the world. Most of us reading this would have wanted, at some point in our lives the ability to own a Trans AM Firebird.

Unfortunately, being a highly sought-after car now, getting one may not be all that easy (Burt Reynolds destroyed 12 in the movie) but why suffer at all. Just get to your local diecast dealer and order all the 1977 Firebirds Jada Toys has to offer. It will make you happy.

of the end for Pontiac. The last firebird that sparked joy in the hearts of car lovers around the world. Like its predecessor, this model was also a bit of a starlet having been casted in Smokey and the Bandit 3. But its greatest role reprised is the one as KITT in the hit TV series Knight Rider. Another Firebird with a more refined attitude and in KITT’s case accent.

A fantastic casting with brilliant paintwork and tampos right around the car. In Hot Wheels terms this is about as premium as you can get in their mass-produced series for Fast n’ Furious. Treaded rubber wheels complete the ensemble.

Since this is a premium Car Culturebased model the rubber wheels are a given with a set of really nice grey 5 spoke alloys wheels. Another cool feature is that this is called a custom (what Hotwheels calls custom) which means some sort of body modification, in this case, it’s the bonnet allowing the engine bay to be exposed.

This red model dropped last year as part of the mainline series. A basic casting but also well done in the sense that the shape of the body is definitely a trans am. The red body black chassis is also a nice mix of colors on a visually bland model.

DAVID HOUSTON’S FOR 2021 OBSCURE MODELS TOP 10

In general, over the past couple of years, there hasn’t been too much to be excited about around the world. Save for us that could go deeper into our hobbies with so much seat time at home. For me personally, it was a bit slow in 2020 with so few releases due to worldwide pandemic additionally with economic uncertainties causing companies to reduce new product releases

However, in 2021, China seems to rebounded quickest globally in response to demands by e-commerce consumers.

It’s especially noted that for us collectors of miniature automobiles, which are so prevalent from the many Chinese factories basically as “toy makers to the world”.

Personally, for me I am in the best space as a miniature car collector, as a fan of the

two hottest scales of 1/18th and 1/64th. It seems like the smaller of the two mentioned scales is on fire at the moment. Almost every other day it feels like a new company crops up online. In 2021 more new brands kept the trend up of releasing ever higher quality and more intricately detailed 1/64th scaled versions of just about any road going vehicle that one could wish for. Even some of those have opening or working features. We can relish in a landscape of higher-quality variety never offered before over such a broad spectrum.

Of the larger scale of 1/18th, details have jumped further off of the Richter scale. Features like removable engine cover shrouds, multi-stage pull up/ push down antennas, sliding/ folding seats, sliding/tilting moon/sun panoramic roofs, opening center consoles/

When Nigel J De Zilwa asked could I do a rundown of the 10 Best Obscure Models which I received over the year, it was difficult to cut the list down to only 10 miniatures. However, I was thrilled as this is right up my alley!

gloveboxes, rotating drive shafts which turn with wheel rotation, even some models have working cylinders in connection with the rotating drive shafts, working front/rear and interior LEDs as well as real leather seating surfaces at scale. You name it and some model companies in China will produce it on an outstanding level of functionality combined with intricacy.

101/64 DCM Toyota Century

I was thoroughly surprised with this release, as mainstream HobbyJAPAN had announced producing their verion of this model in 1/64th scale as well.

So, with DCM based out of China beating HobbyJAPAN and everyone else (besides toy line Tomica red box) to the punch with a truly highly detailed 1/64th of Toyota’s current generation Century.

The miniature of Toyota’s most distinguished top luxury sedan is impressive to say the least.

No detail was overlooked or out of scale. (Even bettering the later release by HobbyJAPAN themselves). Notable details such as scaled finely multi-spoked wheels/front grille/badging/ excellent paint finish and if your un-screw the model from its base, you will be blown away with it a realistically scaled Velour interior with magazine present on the center rear seat. That is overkill in detail and I haven’t seen any other brand come close to matching them in 1/64th scale, save for (LCD Models).

091/64 LJM Rolls Royce Wraith

What did I do to deserve such jewels being released in recent times? Well, that was what hit me like a brick, because the Wraith just happened to be one of my favorite cars ever!

That said, my jaw almost dropped when I first saw that LJM had produced a highly functional 1/64th scale version of that car, plus they nailed the shape at that. Wow!....that is the best way to describe my reaction to that miniature.

With functioning features like opening hood(bonnet)/ trunk(boot) and doors as well as holding wheel center hubs like the 1/1. All of this detail comes in at a price of above $40USD with online sellers out of China. I’d have to say for what you get, it’s worth it, especially if you are into premium exact scale 1/64ths miniatures.

Paudi Model 2021/22

Hyundai Tucson L (OEM)

Paudi Model always hits their models outta’ the ball park. This time with the newest Tucson, it’s no different. The model is done to a really high standard with many functional features and excellent detailing.

realistically detailed interior graphics and accents round out a well-balanced model.

071/18 KENGFai 2021 Lincoln Aviator (Dealer Edition)

Can you say “Good-Bling?”. Well, in the case of the intricately detailed and perforated massive from grille, you can do so. I don’t have one model which has a front grille that looks like jewelry; it shimmers like diamonds when rotating under lights.

rear privacy tint. Once you open up the full 360 Access model, you will notice higher end details like intricate speaker system grills with all legible buttons on both dash and center console, brushed diamond finished trim looks spot on, IP and center stack/infotainment graphics are replicated well. Did I mention that it has a panoramic sun/moonroof? It does and I forgot to show to it opened in my shots. The best detailing is under the model. OMG! The chassis is detailed as all out. I am really impressed with how well the chassis is represented here, plus it has working suspension to boot. It’s glorious, look at the pics and drool (better to add one), especially at the quad detailed rear exhaust tips.

It exceeds my 2020 Hyundai Sonata also made by Paudi. The only weak area that I can find is the engine bay, just like my Sonata’s. Other than that, every other detail is on point when it comes to detailing or functional features.

I am impressed with that feature on this Aviator miniature... but, wait, there is more, way more! The wheels are twotoned and polished/black with working suspension, full engine detailing (or deep enough to appear full) with warning labels throughout the engine bay, also, the two-toned black over blue is flawless with P.E

The model has other working features like sliding & folding seats, folding side mirrors and hidden accessories under the rear load floor. Everyone should be on this level in 2021 as far as model makers go. I highly recommend this model on so many levels, it’s that good.

Of course, the model comes stacked with working features such as sliding/opening panoramic roof, sliding and folding seats (front/rear), folding side mirrors, working suspension, opening hood, rear hatch, all four opening doors, fuel door, plus a really intricately detailed chassis and suspension set up (front/rear). Details like dual finished wheels, excellent paint finish, jewel like front and rear lighting, P.E. badging with

Badging contrasting the caramel-colored interior. The rear windows are realistic with

hidden behind those trays which tilt for access of rear passenger’s usage. The model also comes with the umbrella in the doors, “The Spirit of Ecstasy” or a bodycolored plaque can stand/sit on the end of its nose. Perforated front grilles gives a peek to the radiator sitting a bit back inside with other mechanical bits. Also, the “RR” on the center wheel lug doesn’t rotate like the 1/1.

Overall, this model is slightly better than Kyosho Rolls quality standards, but pretty good overall approaching or meeting KengFai’s level. It’s highly detailed and very functional!

I personally like the front headlamp details, the rear opening tailgate with all of its functional and hidden storage compartments with accessories.

Lexus

LM300h (Toyota Vellfire/Toyota Alphard)

When you look up or down inside of this miniature van, you will find dual sliding sunroof/ panoramic roof with interior shade covers and a tilting sun/ moonroof feature up front.

This Cullinan is chalked full of the common details like sliding seats/panoramic roof/ opening fuel tank door/prop up hood(bonnet)/folding side mirrors and full 360 access body with working suspensions (front & rear). Where this model truly shines is, working features like dual opening center armrests with rear dinner trays which fold out of the front seat backs with addition computer screens

When you move to the exterior, you will be impressed by the solid & smooth easy sliding rear doors as well as the opening fuel door access replicated here, pivoting/rotating side mirrors, opening hood/bonnet & rear hatch/tailgate door with smoked limo-tinted rear privacy glass for rear passenger seclusion and an abundance of chrome slathered here and there to break up the volume-isk mass.

This Lexus LM300h’s interior surfaces are all executed to high level with all details functional reclining captain’s chairs with swing out tables for your laptop or dining and etc. in the Lexus. It’s all there as well as detailed IP/dash and driving area. Under the hood, you will find deeply detailed engine casting for hybrid-petrol combination motor detailing and labeling.

When you flip the model over to view the chassis, you’ll be pleased to find out that it too is metal with highly detailed working suspension! Also, present are gorgeously & realistically replicated exhaust systems and tail pipe finishers. All top class, not a step or a beat lost anywhere.

KENGFai 1963-81 MercedesBenz 600 Pullman (W100)

and rear cooled bar to a fault... it’s only missing wine or shot glasses inside. Fully carpeted floors and trunk/corrugated front & rear seating surfaces are well replicated as are fabric seatbelts with metal buckles which sits on the siting surfaces and are held in location to be viewed by anyone peering into the windows.

This model also features a highly detailed exterior. Please make sure that you have longer fingernails or a suction tool to open the doors. The seams or gaps are tight! So, you will be satisfied with the overall appearance fit and finish.

This model replicates EU LHD spec’d Pullmans (with the US spec’d ones wearing front and rear fender side blinkers). However, that’s mostly where those differences end exterior wise, in addition to features like flag mounted fender placements, also offered worldwide (Especially used by world leaders or whichever dictators who could afford one).

I love the high-quality color coded and chrome finished wheels with “white-walled” banded tires, full 6.3-liter M100 V8 motor with wiring details and supporting accessories to aid the motor under the hood. Other highly detailed areas are the chrome plated trim rings sitting over the outside of each outer wheel-well. Accurate details like that are a really nice touch. In addition to that, KENGFai keeps showing true attention to the smallest of intricate parts which sends this model to the top in precision & quality matching and perhaps besting the older AA releases.

031/18thKENGFai

Toyota Crown Royal Salon 3.0 (Series 155) CDM Spec

This model features proper P.E. metal badging/logos as well as other accurately replicated details. You’ll notice that this model uses a hyper-realistic perforated front grille, like the 1/1 cars have done with its three pointed “Stern” or “Star” logo mounted on the top of the grille. Also, please look closely at the nose/wheels and rear trunk and you’ll see how this model doesn’t miss any “stars” in those locations or on the steering wheel.

The all white multi materialinterior with realistic wooden trim mimics accurately how 60s era premium Mercedes-Benz products actually looked. KENGFai really nailed that interior with working armrests

There are so many versions of Toyota’s Crown. They range from humble taxis, to basic sedans to a more mid-premium Royal Salon Sedans (like this 155 series model), then sleeker Royal Salon Sedans, more stylish and sporty Hardtops/Athletes and range toping Majestas with Hybrids of most versions. I would love to see even more exciting looking Crown models, especially Hardtops and Majestas by KengFai.

This model features a highly detailed interior/exterior, including fully carpeted floors

and trunk/sliding front seats as well as fabric seat belts and metal buckles/opening fuel door/all 4-doors that can be opened/full extreme motor detailing and a rear floor carpeting that holds the spare tire in a side storage location. Although the models use an accurate looking half mini cylinder for then opening the rear trunk hinges (as opposed to larger dog legs typical on opening models), up front the models uses realistic working struts for hood supports. Those supports also helps with the weight of that panel.

021/18 Century Dragon

H9/Hongqi H9 Red Flag

Other neat functioning features are the folding side mirrors, movable rear seat armrest and opening center console in addition to the sliding front seats. Upper perforated grilles and lower front bumper intakes add depth. Plus, this model features fully working metal suspension and a metal chassis.

All set in triple black, the chrome trim on my 1/18th scale model dances in bright contrast to the body. Very stunning! It’s a gorgeous model overall, even if one doesn’t like the styling. I do, that’s why I bought it.

then stops...only to start again on the middle area a top of the dashboard. Very neat detail and it’s replicated on the model. In the trunk, lift the carpeted load floor to find a tire and tool kit set up underneath. Open the strut supported hood and you’ll find a detailed motor with a removable engine cover/shroud to peer further into the engine bay at the motor underneath. It’s nice to have access to a full motor under that plastic cover. More model makers should also do this feature.

Working features and details like working suspension, full access opening doors/hood/trunk, even folding side mirrors. Details like perforated front grilles, highly intricate front and rear lights. This model is heavy, It comes with heavy wooden display base to sit upon. It really is a nice package, only missing a display case.

Move inside and it feels like the real car must smell of leather, wood and business deals all wrapped in technology. Century Dragon didn’t miss a beat. This model features perforated leather like seats that slide back and forth, the panoramic roof tilts open, the rear windows feature smoked dark privacy glass, realistic, accurately detailed door cards and IP/ Dashboard and center armrest command centers front and rear with correct display graphics.

Rounding out the interior is a nicely carpeted interior and trunk. One other very unique detail is that the “Red Flag” corporate theme red line that starts at center of the nose on the grille , travels up the hood 3/4 of the way and

The box makes one feel like they are getting a premium product or box with a bottle of wine inside. Again, well done. I feel extremely fortunate to have this model in my collection. It’s a reasonable price for a highquality product.

011/18Xiaoguang Models

1994-96 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham LT1 (Preproduction Sample)

This model is so well detailed, it’s a good feeling to hold a neo-vintage American model done in full opening 360 access with such high details and real leather interior. Other than KengFai Models, it’s been a while since I’ve actually held a model with a fully detailed and complete motor. This model doesn’t miss a beat detail wise.

This model takes you back into a time capsule, if you grew up around GM products). I’m not a huge fan of real leather on model cars (It’s never as smooth as 1/1s), but this matches something that CMC would’ve done interior wise (At least on my McLaren SLR). The model has a fully detailed chassis with working metal suspension, that was a surprise.

Open the fully hinged and supported hood to see the highly detailed motor which is fully wired and plumbed. The interior has realistic metal GM seatbelt buckles and typical GM electrical window and lock switches as well as rear ashtrays on the door cards with wood trim that matches the 1/1’s in images.

The body is bathed in photoetched Cadillac badging with corporate “crest & wreath” to match the one-to-one Fleetwood Brougham, nothing missed there. Speaking of details, Xiaoguang Models have done a really good job with their padded roof. I think that it’s made out of plastic, but replicates the leather textured vinyl patterns on the real car in images.

I had to be really careful when polishing my model due to the texture on the roof. I certainly didn’t want to have to clean that. Also, you have to make sure to not accidentally break off the 1/18th crest and wreath on the hood. I was nervous and very aware while polishing that area of the model. Also, I really like the finish on the wheels and how well the white walled tires were done. Overall, it’s a well-executed model.

This model is a feel-good allrounder details wise, you keep finding little gems all over the place. It’s delightful for that reason alone. The expanse of chrome along the bottom of the car is mesmerizing!...just keep your gloves on to handle it there and in general.

Closing out 2021, let me say that the Chinese Model car industry has proven to be so satisfying and competitive overall. They do the broadest range of vehicles of pretty much everything made (even if 2021 was dominated by Crossover/SUV releases).

We collectors can benefit from that variety for our satisfaction in our collecting desires. The best part is that the Chinese manufactures aren’t being greedy about all of their excellent products by overcharging us collectors for above and beyond premium level models.

Imaging if your favorite established model company had done either of these miniatures here, those same models would be 3 to 4 times more expensive. For the price of one established premium Western North American or European/East Asian (Japanese/HK) branded model, here,

I have two or three highly detailed pieces from Chinese Brands. Thank goodness for global connectivity!

TITANS OF RACING

Racing is centered around two things, the driver and the car. Together they act as a link between two worlds man and machine connecting mechanical with heart, producing passion and power, speed and sacrifice coming together with determination and drive. To be a great driver means to have an innate knowledge of the car its abilities and it’s limitations to be able to push the ticket every time.

After FERRARI’s dominance in endurance ended at the wheels of FORD, the Germans decided it was their turn and a series of insane Porsche racing machines made their way into

the endurance circuit. Wins were plentiful and the drivers were like gods for taming these beasts into victory. The Porsche 935 that raced from 78-81 also known as the ‘whale tail’ was one of those ancient beasts and in the hands of John Fitzpatrick and David Hobbs AKA JDavid Racing, it was a winner.

SOLIDO has been rocking the scene in leaps and bounds with a constant barrage of beautiful vehicles with incredible detail. Their competition

series has been a mind-blowing experience with a lot of great endurance, rally, and Formula 1 racing cars being released in a 1/18 scale. It’s great to open the doors and look inside trying to imagine the discomfort drivers would have had to face during an endurance race. Sweat pouring down their face as they strain against their seatbelts trying to keep an eye on the racing line. It’s obvious I have overindulged on LeMans based movies,

In 1982 Team JDavid comprising of David Hobbs and John Fitzpatrick took to LeMans in this Porsche 935 and set out winning in the IMSA GTX Class completing 329 laps and coming 4th overall in the championship a very notable victory in a car that was already in decline a year ago against newer and faster Porsche’s. But the mighty whale tail held on with typical Porsche reliability and speed.

Back to looking at the fantastic model from SOLIDO and it’s easy to see why one can get really excited about these sorts of models. For a long time, we would these sorts of cars coming out of much higher prices of course with more features. Some of them with highly detailed engines and body parts or very highly rendered resin bodies with exquisite paint jobs and fancy display units but completely out of reach for most collectors.

And SOLIDO doesn’t compromise on quality just because they are in a better price range. Just look at the interior detail as well as the refinement on the exterior. As a collector, this will satisfy all needs except if you like an open engine model, then a much higher priced one is for you. Personally, I don’t have the funds to buy all the models I would like to own from more expensive and opulent brands but if SOLIDO keeps dropping these wonderful motorsport bombs I say take my money and give me my models.

THE LOVES MONSTER EVERYONE

Even GODZILLA gets love for being the monster that destroys other monsters. Which is why the R34 got such a moniker. An unassuming coupe with a monster engine that smoked other monsters like a Cuban cigar paired with Courvoisier. The NISSAN GT-R 34 was the next-level standard that brought the old and new generation of NISSAN’s tech together and blasted everyone into space. On top of that, it’s also a very good-looking car. Sleek long nose, spacious

cabin, and short rear made the R34 an imposing street racer with impeccable handling. But then most of you know that.

SOLIDO’S first foray into the R34 was the release of two models that were literally being snapped up everywhere they went. One was the original VSPEC version in Bayside Blue and the same with ADVAN livery. I would be very surprised if SOLIDO had any more of these in stock. As soon as they were released the internet was flooded with pictures on the internet. Now, SOLIDO releases and new variations in Midnight Purple and NISMO 5 spoke alloy wheels. The internet lost its S@#$!

Another fine specimen from SOLIDO personally makes it one of my favorites for 2021 from their collection. Great paint job, bodywork is fine, the NISMO alloy wheels are super cool and the yellow brake caliper against the purple is so good it almost poetic. The overall color is such a great choice and honestly, I prefer it to the Bayside blue. Beautiful exterior that works. But what about the interior?

Again, a solid effort in detail brings us a very nicely crafted interior which isn’t too shabby and sparse at all. If SOLIDO keeps this up they will be challenging bigger brands in sales pretty soon. 2021 had a great lineup of cars from them and we are expecting bigger things and more fun models in 2022.

CULTURED CASTHEAD

I grew up around PONTIACS and American Car Culture oddly enough not in the US but them like the cars the culture was huge and where I came from owning and maintaining one was not hard. My Uncles had PONTIACS and couple that with watching Burt Reynolds do flying leaps in PONTIAC Trans AM over broken bridges being chased a PONTIAC LeMans while growing up it’s easy to see why I have such a soft spot for the brand. So, when I saw the FIREBIRD logo with bright gold foil printing on the cover sitting on the virtual shelf of the bookstore I just had to click ‘BUY’.

This is not the history of PONTIAC this is the history of how the FIREBIRD came into existence. An interesting story that many may not know. Like for example what was john DeLorean’s part to play in the existence of the TRANS AM? When GM already had the CAMARO why did they need another show pony? A book filled with answers and an insight into America’s automotive history with its competition and fight for sales. Interestingly it talks about a time when American cars were becoming legacies. It’s not like you find modern versions of Bonnevilles and Impalas but throw a stone and you would probably hit a Mustang.

“Knight Rider. A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not ex ist. Michael Knight: a young loner on a cru sade to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless, the pow erless, in a world of criminals who oper ate above the law.” –

So, if you are looking for a great read that traces the start to finish of one of America’s most loved and iconic brands this is a fantastic piece filled with beautiful full-page images and lovely photography. If you can also expect to read very extensively about the Trans AM’s life on screen and how that contributed to the popularity of the brand demonstrating the synergy between pop culture and car culture.
