Hot Wheels

‘82 Dodge Rampage There was a time when people wanted a comfort of a car with the workings of a small truck, this is when utility vehicles like the Chevy El Camino, Ford Ranchero and others were born. The Dodge Rampage made the landscape in 1982 and was mostly marketed to the younger crowd who wanted to take their dirt/quad bikes and go dune bashing, canyon hopping or other activities that were popular in the early 80s. One of the main competitors to the Rampage was the Subaru BRAT. Hot Wheels version features the classic red/ yellow paint of the original release and a quad bike on the bed. 2020 Honda E

A sexy little all electric car, the Honda E first debuted at the 2017 Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) in Germany and consumers started seeing the production versions in early 2020. The design pays homage to the early 60s and 70 Honda kei cars. The car features some interesting design and production details., and Matchbox seemed to have got all of them right. The first release sees it in the white/black first presented, with the glass being more opaque. Scale 1:64 Status: Available

The SWB and LWB models were stunning, with its wide stance, wheel arches and brawler good looks, it was love at first sight for a lot of SUV fans. 1993 Dodge Stealth What this model is essentially a badge-engineered Mitsubishi GTO (3000GT), born out of a strange marriage between Chrysler and MMC in the 1990s. While Chrysler was responsible for the exterior, the rest of the 2+2 four-seater grand tourer was done by MMC. The 3L vee-8s were responsible for some impressive numbers back in the day. Auto World models are impressive. The silver fleck model and the dark teal (green?) model both sport black roofs and details that are decent to say the least. Scale 1:64 Status: Available

1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am The Firebird was essentially built to take on Ford’s mighty Mustang. The ‘77 is part of the second-generation model lineup. It received a significant set of improvements and styling cues, especially the much-recognized front end that gave it a more hawkish appearance. It’s shaker scoops also received a lower profile, and to top it all off, the Trans Am Special Edition was featured in the infamous Smokey and the Bandit. JL presents the model in a rich brown (one of the few models that color works on) and white. Scale 1:64 Status: Available

1971 HEMI ‘Cuda The Dodge Barracuda isn’t a Challenger in disguise. It is its own model and one of the finest ones to roll out of Detroit. It came with 383 (335hp) as standard, but then you could choose the AAR “Six Pack” (290hp) and the 440 Super Commando (375/390hp) and the glorious HEMI pushing 425hp. It pushed this car to gut-busting speeds and left some people in fumes of hi-octane fuel and burnt rubber. Racing Champion releases this in Winchester Grey Metallic, racing steelies. Rallying, since its inception, is one of the most punishing motorsports out there, bar none. F1 can claim faster time, NASCAR goes round and round in blazes of glory, and Le Mans (or other track-based races) can be hard, rallying is man (usually two) and machine against the best (or worst) nature can throw at you. It was brutal and only the most dedicated saw the finish line.

It takes sill to drive, while your co-pilot/navigator tells you where to go, at blazing speed, while something that was 100m away can be impaled on your bumper in mere seconds. It’s grueling, and all manner of obstacles are thrown at you. Death awaited on many corners, both for the pilots as well as some idiot spectators who get too close.

Into this sport, for a while dominated by the likes of Fords, Subaru Imprezas, Mitsubishi Evos, came the Lancia Delta HF Integrale in 1987. This was the start of its legendary domination of the sport. It went on to win 46 WRC overall victories, and six consecutive Constructor’s Championship wins from 1987-1992 It went on to become one of the most titled marques in WRC’s history.

When MINIGT announced the release of the 1992, 1000 Lakes Rally winning model, I was ecstatic. One of my favorite brands were releasing a Lancia!! A Rally Lancia!! A Championship winning Lancia!! I knew this was a model that was going to end up on the cover. So, a few emails and phone calls later, I received two prototype models... before and after livery application.

Cue vast amounts of drooling, watching YouTube videos of the rally, listening to the engine sounds, wading through thousands of pictures, wallpapers and data sets to get to know MORE about the real car, while this fresh out of the studio (not the factory) model sitting in front of me. This fragile model, precursor to final approved models that will make its way too many happy collectors soon. Fully-licensed, authentic and one hellva model - Lance

Numbered with the same number as the actual constructor-winning car this MM version is a nice tribute to Shelby’s accomplishments for American in motorsport. DIECAST SUPPLEMENT FOR COLLECTORS

SCALE 1/64 DIECAST METAL

By now I think we all know the story of Henry Ford II wanting to stick it to Enzo Ferrari and did so in 1966 with a lineup of FORD GT40’s coming home together one, two, and three. A triumphant moment in motorsport history and a spectacularly iconic moment akin to the moon landing or Cuban missile crisis. Funnily enough, this was another car that Caroll Shelby had direct involvement in the building. Seems like there’s a lot of love for Shelby over at Muscle Machines.

This is a BRILLIANT representation of the classic driven to a controversial victory by Chris Amon and Bruce McLaren. The short squatness of the body that comes from the Muscle Machines recipe book really suits the body shape of the car. And it’s quite plain to see a lot of love has gone into furnishing some really nice details. Little bumps that give it the pop rivet feels, the rear cleverly looks quite detailed but is simply put together. In the last series, there was a clear winner of the set, with this series it’s super hard to choose.

Absolutely gorgeous and once again plenty of classic detail to spare. Starting with the color combination of Mint Green and the bronzed-out wheels of steel, this is a great pairing because the car is so over the top it doesn’t need an over-the-top paint job.

The big, supercharged engine is unmissable with its big red air intake vent covers and rubber drive belt in front treaded tires and detailed exhaust unit including undercarriage pipes. The whole package is well put together and you can see the imagination of the creator blending old-school modifications like an open-wheel in front and more modern wheel arches blended into bodywork at the back. 1941 WILLYS COUPE SCALE 1/64 DIECAST METAL

No.11

Famously known for their jeeps and service in the army, Willy’s did produce quite a few cars. A lot of them looked like gangster cars from the 1930s and 40’s era with sideboards where Johnny could stand and let his Tommy sing. They also did rebadged cars like the Willys Interlagos made in Brazil and was a rebadged Alpine A108. This Cherry Red sparkle painted Coupe is your modded rod from the Grease Lightning days.

These were the beginnings of car culture, street racing, car modifying days to come. Look at the pipes on this beast. Again, Maisto captures essence not copying designs. There is nothing much that wouldn’t sound repetitive we can talk about at this point in reference to detail because they are all good and pretty cool. This is a mean green machine. Growing up I used to see these living up to their names cruising down the streets like great ships held to the road by pure weight, wood finishings, steel parts, brass parts, cars so heavy they needed monster engines, and the monster engines needed, monster engine bays and they drank petrol like an Irish man at his daughter’s wedding. If cars like that existed today Greta Thunberg would turn purple.

So, if you wanted extra speed, you had to put an even bigger engine, that stuck OUT of the monster engine bay and helped divide the lines of personal space in the car. Lovely paint color and finish, nice retro lines in gold, good choice of black for the rims, and once again, such a great idea by the design team to use an actual piece of rubber for the belt drive. 60s era European Car Makers:

“We made some of the world’s most beautiful cars” 60s era Toyota Corp:

“Here, hold my sake!” The swinging 60s saw the birth of some of the best-looking automobiles of the 20th century. Sleek flowing lines, rounded silhouettes, and stunning shapes. Most of them that saw the light of day are now some of the most expensive collector cars in the world today. Cars like the Ferrari 250GTO, the E-type from Jaguar, the Lamborghini Miura to name a few. This was also the decade that the staid, aka boring, car maker from Japan decided to burst its beige image with a stunning car in eggshell white. A car that almost wasn’t, and something that went on to become an icon. A car that challenged perceptions and made the entire world take notice of the fact that Japanese manufacturers could also create cars that could go all Sumo wrestler on more wealthier brands. The Majorette version was in prototype and production since mid2020 and is just hitting the market. It was also one of the first models where they asked collectors’ opinions on which wheel type to use, and CastHeads were instrumental in starting the conversation.

We are extremely happy with the wheel choice, the opening hood with a decently detailed engine, and so much attention has gone to the styling cues of the 1:1. It’s somewhat larger than the Tomica, Johnny Lightning, and Hot Wheels versions, but scale be damned, it’s a beautiful car in

miniature. Glass headlights, painted rear, and tiny logos on either side. Pretty well for a Majorette mainline. Excited for the future versions (and oh boy there are so many liveries possible with this exotic, gorgeous little car.

SCHU DROP CO S CAR A TEN SCOR E People get your wallets ready and Christmas bonus cheques cashed things are about to get rough at the checkout counter children, parents and adult collectors will battle to get their hands on these models which can be bought as a gift set in a special display box. And the entire set we have to say is worth the money. From the packaging to the car selection, to even the disproportionate wheels this set feels like it was put together with collectors in mind. Is Schuco gunning for that market?

SCHUCO PAPER BOX

PORSCHE 911 TURBO SCALE 1/64 DIECAST METAL

This is called the Paper Box series and a great start to your green Christmas with its packaging dedicated to meeting the demands of reducing plastic waste. So, you get a box inside a slipcase all made out of a board, and inside the box wrapped in tissue paper is your model. In this case a beautifully clean 911 Turbo.

Schuco has done many variations of this casting all of them have been perfect but there is something pure about this white one. A curious thing is that all the cars in this set feel slightly heavier than the variations that are already available. And I speculate that there is an extra

coat or two on the paint to make the paint on these really stand out. Adding to the quality feel of the paint we can add that added details like the plastic rear and front lights just make this a brilliant casting in its own class but

TOMICA level detail for the same price. As Porsche Diecast models go this has got to be on the best casting I have seen and without a doubt should be owned by any Porsche lover or fan.

SCHUCO PAPER BOX

CITROEN 2CV SCALE 1/64 DIECAST METAL

It’s amazing how comic books, music, and movies was the internet for many of us growing up in the ’70s and ’80s. For example, how could a car of dubious design from a French automaker become so widely known around the world without people having camera handheld phones, Instagram, and streaming car shows? For me, it was TinTin, Inspector Clouseau, Lupin as far as I can remember. All three featured the 2 CVs prominently.

So, this quirky car has surreptitiously slipped into our lives, and even though I’m not a huge fan I feel quite drawn to this piece by Schuco. It just seems, looks, and feels perfect. The little headlights, the orange paint, the weight of the car, and even the side view isn’t so bad. Watch out for the wheel hubcaps. Schuco does really nice wheel hubs for classic cars and this range is not short.

GIFT GUIDE 2021 one sixty four

SCHUCO PAPER BOX

VOLKSWAGEN CAMPER VAN SCALE 1/64 DIECAST METAL

Several reasons why this makes the cut as a collector’s choice. Great paint works simple but you can feel it’s been painted a few times. The wheel hubs are more cream than white with Schuco’s signature chrome hub plate which they do in all scales to perfection. And, this color combination is just so perfect. A classic no doubt and to be honest there has been a sudden and increased interest in this model especially the low rider version. The issue is the saturation of models that range from 1/18 down to 1/87. Way too much choice and variations. So, if you are in the market for a VW Camper Van and it’s for collecting purposes, we advise you to get your hands on this.

Fill up someone’s sock or stocking this season with a double helping of Volkswagen. This is another beautiful painted and well-crafted VW beetle with huge amounts of character. Like the bus, this two-tone color scheme of blue and white makes these both look like really handsome collectors’ pieces. It’s very clear to see that Schuco is seriously looking at being an avenue for detailed cars and collectors to meet down. This set screams limited Edition and certainly looks the part in terms of packaging, finish, and details. Collectors are being treated with more choice and collections are growing rapidly.

Another thing to note is that this set favors European cars. So, we are going to be getting the best of their German, British and French lines. And nothing is more British than the Mini Cooper painted in the same color as Mr. Bean’s mini. Really glad to see a mini in this set. Hardcore Mini collectors are definitely going to be going for this and there are a lot of MINI collectors in the world. Really like the effort made on the sports rims.

MERCEDES BENZ 280D SCALE 1/64 DIECAST METAL

Loving this Mercedes trip back in time with Schuco especially with obscure models in the diecast world. The 280D, however, was not an obscure model in the real world and was in fact a very popular model that enjoyed large sales all over the world which means like me there are a lot of adult collectors out there whose dad may have had one of these in their lifetime. Gifting ideas! Detailed front grille WITH hood ornament, large chrome bumpers, your typical Mercedes wheel hub

setup from that era and really loving the mint green color that apparently suits the shape of the car. There have been some concerns about the wheels being disproportionate which is visible from the front angle, something to look out for if that sort of thing doesn’t fly with you.

SCHUCO PAPER BOX

MERCEDES 300 SL SCALE 1/64 DIECAST METAL

From a rarely seen in diecast model to a popular Mercedes staple for the people it’s the 300 SL in a beautiful deep red, a rich-looking color perfect for this car. Schuco has done this car in various scales and have obviously got the hang of reproducing it perfectly.

Hold it up against any other brand that has done the same model in a similar price range, and you’ll see this comes out on top without skipping a beat. If you were stuck with the choice of having a choice to buy only of these cars from the set and the person you are buying it for is just a car enthusiast in general, this would be the one to get.

GIFT GUIDE 2021 one sixty four

This wins ‘best color’ choice and ‘paint job’ absolutely off the chain. When I opened the box and unwrapped this, I gasped a little gasp of pleasure a simple made to look beautiful by the design team behind the paper box project. And even though all models in the set share similar details and quality some of them just stand out.

SCHUCO PAPER

The detail on this GOLF is super slick and that great green paint makes the lines of the car give it a clean and almost realistic look. As you can see for yourself, the car is quite up there in terms of detail. Plastic lights front and back, lights even the steel rims are detailed amazingly.

LAND ROVER DEFENDER Another one to add to the Defender lineup at home. A lot of 1/64 scale brands are seeing the cash cow that is the Defender and has pit up many of their own versions. But when it comes to getting the details right Schuco is one of the few that are acing the realism side of things with great reproduction of the Defender.

GEN OLF

I think it’s hard to miss the level of detail the brand has tried to achieve and honestly it might be easier to try and look for the negatives and list those out over the positives, but even those points are hard to find. So, it’s safe to say if you want a good Defender Schuco’s got one for you.

BMW 2002 Born by accident when two echelons of power at BMW decided that they would like their 1600cc 2 doors BMW also coded 1600-2 modified to use 2.0-liter engines. Realizing that they had done this took their Frankenstein creation to the board members who immediately thought “ja das ist gut” and sanction the development of a hungrier beast ready for the USA. And after several versions and modifications, this car finally grew up to be BMW’s first TURBO-powered car in 1973. In the history of BMW, this is quite the pivotal car and of course, Schuco have done yet another stunning job of giving us car lovers and collectors the ability to get up close with these pieces of motoring history with a fair level of accuracy. Even something as small as the shape of the windows on the side has been carefully crafted. This set is way too good to be dispensed to the little children, each one of these has been built from the ground up screaming “find us a collector’s home” Do we wish to see more of these in 2022? Most definitely! In fact, I think it’s imperative that Schuco sees itself as brand collectors would be happy to buy into and start catering a bit more into that direction.

CASTHEADS EXCLUSIVE

The global 1/64 collectors scene has exploded and the demand for 64 scale cars has never been higher. resulting in a slew of producers answering the call.

MC64 is a fairly new brand that has slowly been making a name for itself in the 1/64 model car market. So far, their concentration has been focused on Subaru Impreza’s and Mitsubishi Evo’s with a few Isuzu trucks in between. The castings have been excellent, and the brand has served up some pretty interesting liveries and paint jobs. Dropping in December are two new paint

variants with Subaru castings, and we were thrilled to get a package from the guys over in Singapore to have look and review the new and latest offering from this young brand. Cars have always been great vehicles for getting messages across to a large amount of people and the same goes for car culture as well.

FEATURE ARTICLE CASTHEADS EXCLUSIVE

MC64 uses this as a great opportunity to highlight the environment on their own by releasing to the wild world of diecast collecting a Subaru Impreza designed in collaboration with Singaporean Designer Colin Choo.

SAVING THE EARTH ONE SUBI AT A TIME

The aim of the car is to bring to attention the 16,306 endangered species listed on the International Union for Conservation with already 800 species forced into extinction.

Conceptualized five years ago, MC64 finally has the opportunity to release this model featuring animals from the land, air, and sea with the dotted lines signifying their disappearance. It’s a great idea and most certainly a great way to open new ways of thinking to more people by engaging them through their hobbies. And, from a collector’s point of view, this is certainly a great model in terms of detail. These guys are most certainly in the game!

AT YOUR

SERVICE Like a pair of caring siblings, Porsche and Volkswagen have always gone together hand in hand. Completely different in every way but shared DNA in so many others. VW has always unconditionally supported Porsche in sport and business and likewise, Porsche has been the grateful sibling raking in the cash because it has got the skills to pay the bills.

Ever since I saw this, I’ve been wanting to get my hands on one. I’m a Porsche fan clear and confirmed, so I have a healthy interest in anything to do with Porsche or surrounding its motorsport heritage. So, getting my hands on one of these in a 1/32 scale is pretty special. There are 1/64 versions from Schuco but the demand for these sorts of things is really heated and getting this in more popular scales like 1/64 or 1/18 will burn a sizable through your pocket.

VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORT VAN SCALE 1/32 DIECAST METAL

Quite famously the VW T1 Panel bus served as a long-time on the road companion with the Porsche Motorsport teams, carrying spares, tools, luggage and serving as sleeping space for some of the mechanics as well. Its reliability and ease of repairs made this a great backup vehicle that saw varying degrees of weather and tracks yet always provided reliable transport for the team and stuff that’s relied on the most.

A very prominent PORSCHE Dealer and motorsport racer loved to use VW T1 Buses for the transportation of parts and tools from Germany to the race track. His name was Vasel Polak and had a fleet of T1 vans to send with each race car making him one of the first to have a Race Service van on hand at the track. Schuco is no stranger to delivering quality and class

with even the simplest models. Sadly, this is one that doesn’t have any opening parts but as always, the exterior details are perfect and as a collector, you are left with this warm feeling of satisfaction of being able to get your hands on one of these. As mentioned earlier, this model has become quite the rage and dozens of brands are making this in various sizes.

I did 10 years of karting, winning 7 British Championships, then moved into cars 2007 Competing in the 2007 Formula Renault Championship finishing 4th overall and becoming Rookie Champion, in 2008 I became the Formula Renault British Champion, before moving my career to America in 2009 in the Star Mazda Championship, I won that giving me the opportunity to race for Mazda in the Grand AM championship in 2010 which was the start of my GT career, Moving back to the UK and Europe teaming up with a Dutch driver for the next few year who I coached and raced with whilst Learning the Nurburgring Nordschleife where I made a name for myself.

Do you have any hobbies? Simulator racing, I started during the 2020 lockdown and it became a great way to go racing when I couldn’t actually go racing!

Best and worst experience on track My best experience has to be winning the 24 hours of the Nurburgring in 2016, It is still the greatest achievement in my career. Worst - I think probably the incident at Spa when my car caught fire. It was a crazy, freak incident but the recovery took quite a few weeks and it was frustrating not being able to race while I got better from my injuries.

What are your goals for the future? Just to keep on racing and enjoying it for as long as I can.

THE

GIFT GUIDE 2021

GIVE US JOY TIS SEASON ONE EIGHTEEN

The news of this release almost caused an earthquake. Not that there is anything special about a 911 Porsche RS Turbo in black unless… it also came with stickers which are the license plates of Mike Lowery’s 964 Porsche 911 which is described as one of the fastest production cars in the movie “Bad Boys” starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. For those with a blue 1/18 scale Shelby Cobra there is a tempting diorama set up to be made.

Personally, I had to say “woo-sah” to myself several times just to calm my excited nerves. The news was just so shocking most of us forgot it was still on preorder. This is not the first time SOLIDO have done this Porsche. This model was released around the same time last year in both Red and blue as 3.6 versions while a yellow one came with a 3.8 version rear wing but essentially similar body. SOLIDO has gotten good at making this model.

IS IT JUST ME OR DOESN’T THIS CAR LOOK STUNNING AT EVERY ANGLE! I REALLY WISH EVERYONE IN THE WORLD COULD HAVE ONE.

As a personal favorite, I love deep dish wheels and they were pretty much a standard on most sports cars in the ’90s especially, on Porsche’s. Here is a great job done on the wheels by SOLIDO right down to the slotted brake disk and red PORSCHE branded brake caliper.

Here’s an idea for the interior of the car if you have access to a 3D PRINTER. PRINT SOME FRENCH FRIES AND PUT THEM IN THE PASSENGERS SIDE. This is about the fourth time we have showered down accolades on to Solido and the design team for this particular casting. But the decision to do this in black and suppling the license plate stickers has made many many collectors happy beyond belief at being able to find the right PORSCHE one day where they can finally say “we ride together, we die together, bad boys for life.”

This is going to be a big ticket item this season in fact we would be very surprised if it isn’t sold out already.

NINE ELEVEN- 964

Flachbau Fräulein

Looks like it’s raining 964’s this month. But I’m not complaining as a confirmed PORSCHE enthusiast and a HUGE 964 fan, for me this one is really the G.O.A.T

In typical German style, the gentleman over at Porsche had some 964 TURBO chassis’ left over at the factory, 76 to be precise. So, they flattened the nose of the 964 in tribute to the 930, added slanted fenders, 968 style headlights, twin-pipe exhaust, and RS air intakes to make one of the most beautiful and rarest PORSCHES. There were also many engine modifications that helped carry this beauty to 308 HP making it quite the beast on the road. This is the sort of thing we love Porsche for. They can never leave a good thing be, they must make it better. For our fortunate luck, GT Spirit has decided to take up the challenge of getting this model out into their portfolio and have dropped a beautiful red version of it to be picked up and added to the 911 collection. Once again GT Spirit has not spared any effort in bringing this home with phenomenal detail. Even though this cannot be opened the exterior detail makes up for the disappointment of not getting in. All the details are flawless from nose to exhaust tip. Love the lights that look so realistic.

Absolutely stunning

GT SPIRIT ENDS THE YEAR ON A SUPER HIGH NOTE WITH THIS

E

TE S

Out of all the ‘flat-nosed’ category of Porsche’s out there the 964 is definitely the best-looking version possibly even making it one of the most beautiful cars ever made putting it in the same category as the Jaguar E-Type for example. It also serves as a good example of German creativity and the constant experimentation engineers engage in to get the best results even if it means 3 different engine types and setups which is exactly how many versions of the flat nose 964 are available on the 75 chassis they are built on.

I will appreciate the fact that owning an actual one is out of the question since the latest figures show that one of these could fetch up to a million USD at the auction. Instead, a much cheaper option would be to order it from GT Spirit and store it in your collection to admire anytime you like.

The GT Legacy Continues...

Say hello to the fastest FORD GT ever built with its roots beginning in 1964. Yes, we all know the story of how FORD got its racing program by going up against FERRARI at Le Mans. Fast forward to 2020 and FORD is still running around with competition-beating cars and a new partner in racing making the FORD brand quite formidable on the track. Multimatic has been at the head of FORD’s racing bids since 2014 building race-winning GTs for the brand. This time they have been given carte Blanche to re-imagine the FORD GT. And re-imaging it they have done.

They have taken a competitive sports car and tuned in to what is being called FORD’s supercar. The FORD GT Mk II by Multimatic. Closer inspection of the magnesium alloy wheels gives you a glimpse into the detail GT Spirit goes through to get something as spectacular as this to you as accurately as possible. Every single section, part, and

position of this car has been purposefully built to increase speed and performance. For example, the massive air scoop/ intake on the roof of the car is used to funnel air down to the gearbox, clutch, and oil to keep

it cool. If you thought the GT was mental, the MK 2 is mad mentality personified by the tuning arm MULTIMATIC. But the reason why we are here is to talk about the model car built by GT Spirit and is it worth it?

Of course, it’s worth it! We are talking about a great level of detailing on a car that’s not easy to replicate.

MINI GT FORD GT MK 2 Looking for something smaller and more manageable. MINI GT have just released their version of the same car and the quality and attention to detail is more than commendable. MINI GT have managed to capture all the super nuances of the MKII and reduced them down to the scale of 1/64.

But comparing the two has revealed that great effort has gone into the attention to detail. MINI GT came in and disrupted the 1/64 market with some really nice models and great attention to detail. Now they have become a juggernaut in the 1/64 scale industry releasing some really fantastic castings like this FORD GT MkII

MCLaren Magic from

SOLIDO When we spoke to the team at Solido they teased us with news that 2022 is going to be incredible in terms of model drops. But with the release of this McLaren 600 LT, it seems like the goodies are coming in early. And they haven’t released just one 600 LT, there is two that made the cut for this year.

Of the two colors, my favorite is the purple and grey version. The orange is nice no doubt, but we’ve seen enough McLarens in orange, it’s nice to get one in a different color. The grey highlights are also a nice combination that go well with the purple. I’m glad to see purple being used on more cars.

GIFT GUIDE 2021

ONE EIGHTEEN

Complete with scissor doors, audacious looks, and powerful purple shade this is the stunner to close the year out with. The final Solido for 2021 should be a McLaren

One of the things you can expect to see from Solido is a consistent improvement of detail on the interior. The last few models have seen various improvements.

Solido have got everything right with this model and we really are quite stoked about these McLarens. Just looked at that side profile and imagine looking at that from your bed thinking to yourself about how you own your very first 1/18 McLaren. Which is one of the great things about Solido. Instead of being over the top pricey, you get great value for money in terms of a great model that is well put together has a great finish and a great selection of both modern and classic cars. In this case a super modern McLaren. Perfect entry level for collectors.

GIFT GUIDE 2021 ONE EIGHTEEN

Overall attention to detail is pretty slick. The way the grey aerodynamic pieces fit into the body of the car giving it a bit of a two-tone look but also defining the parts that keep the car firmly planted on the road. Even, my usual favorite part in all these models which are the wheels looks nice and well defined no visible blemishes at all.

Ferrari F40 SCALE 1/18 RESIN

Let’s get one thing clear, the F50 shared almost nothing except one little aspect with Ferrari’s famed F1 cars, but that didn’t get in the way of their marketing. Ferrari didn’t even give the press a chance to test the performance claims at launch time.

But let’s all agree this is a brutishly beautiful car. Only 349 examples made* and almost impossible to get. Well GT Spirit presents this 1995 version in Corsa Rosso and is infinitely more ‘gettable’ than the 1:1 version. It’s still limited to 999 pieces. So, you might have to rush to stuff your stocking with this fine piece of automotive heritage.

Keyed as the successor to the 248 and presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1989, this V8powered model was the last developed under the tutelage of Il Commendatore himself, even though it saw production after his demise. The model was highly praised for its performance and styling upon its release.

The louvered rear looks quite comely. and it would work only on a Ferrari.

GT Spirit really goes to town and paints in Corsa Rosso with this particular model.

The Mercedes Benz CLK AMG GTR Roadster was the result of the company’s interest in GT racing. To compete in the FIA GT1 events, Mercedes and AMG (before it became a part of the company) scratch built a racing car for the championships in 1997. It was for all intents and purposes a racing car. It saw action in 1997 and was rebuilt as the CLK LM to compete in the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans. Altogether it saw 22 races, 17 wins/poles, and 14 fastest lap records. Pretty impressive for a car less than 24 months old.

MERCEDESBENZ CLK AMG GT-R ROADSTER SCALE 1/18 RESIN

“If I had asked the public what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse” - Henry Ford

Boy, aren’t we glad that the executives at Mercedes Benz didn’t ask the public what they wanted. They just up and made the CLK AMG GTR Straßenversion, which was a promise to the FIA even though the FIA GT 1 class was canceled in 1999. Within the existing 25 models, they made just 6 roadsters. Out of these oh-so-limited cars only one, yes, you read that right, only one was painted black. And that is what GT Spirit has decided to present us with. One deep black as starless space Mercedes Benz CLK AMG GTR Roadster. Those silver jet turbine wheels, the barest of chrome and it’s going to get dusty AF open cockpit is detailed to drive you insane Oh also, only one right-hand drive roadster was built. Guess who drives (or parks it in a luxury climate-controlled garage in Darussalam)? Yep, the Sultan of Brunei has 1-of-1-of-1. If you are a fan of Mercedes Benz, super cars, and/or 1:18 detailed models, then yes, this is one for you. It’s going to make your study, or man cave oh so much classier, just by being there.

This car isn’t real. It was designed to be a playable car in the insanely popular PlayStation game Gran Turismo. It is a study in design, a test of materials and energy options to come, and the idea that every driver dreams of being a pilot. Maisto is killing it. 2020/2021 has been a renaissance of both design and quality for the brand. And this 1:18 model is an ideal example of that resurgence.

The glossy blue painted metal blends with the black plastic and carbon fiber bits almost seamlessly. We get the opening cockpit canopy and the engine bay. The opening parts close with a comforting snap, the wheels turn and the details are bordering on the insane. You can find Lamborghini tampos behind the front wheels! Talk about attention to detail from a sub-$50 1:18 model. The opening parts close with a comforting snap, the wheels turn and the details are bordering on the insane. Stuff a stocking (or two or three) with this quite affordable model. Of course, depending on your local retailer being able to get their hands on it.

PAST

PERFECT

KACHOW SCHUCO KACHOW Almost like divine providence I had been whining for a couple of months as to how I would like to get my hands on a largescale Lightning McQueen, being

one of my favorite animated car characters. When I realized I didn’t have one I felt a strange emptiness come over me.

Then the Heavens opened up and a choral of angels flew down with a big white box. It was the angels of Schuco and they had brought me the most beautiful model I had ever seen. 1/18 Lightning McQueen Special Edition in an Acrylic Display box, black base, and opening hood to reveal what powers our hero.

As a fan of model cars and famous Hollywood rides this has to be the jewel in our CastHeads Collection. Nothing screams car culture like the movie ‘CARS’ giving the machines we love so dearly complex human emotions. It did way more than act as a great piece of entertainment especially with regards to cars. It gave us car lovers hope that our car could feel that rush of speed we get when racing. Also, don’t forget this is a special edition which means a very limited amount on offer with the prospect of going up in price later if that is something you have set your mind on doing. Otherwise owning this and having it in a nice place on display is fantastic and a great conversation starter.

Right around the car, the decals have been perfectly applied but as a word of caution, they haven’t been clear-coated and are water transfers, so they have a high probability of getting scratched off while being handled too much. Time to head down to the Michael Jackson surplus store and get some gloves. Besides that, everything about the car will satisfy every Lightning McQueen fan in every way. Whatever detail that can be afforded on the exterior has been faithfully crafted and replicated. The twin side pipes that stick out, the LightYear Tires wrapped around the crazily painted Red and Yellow rims. And the realism in the rims is just fantastic, it looks more realistic than some of the actual cars out there as scale models. Unfortunately, the front wheels don’t turn so if you were planning on creating that famous drift shot with the wheel turned in, well, that won’t happen. But locked away in its display case, with some fancy surrounding lights and this baby is a showstopper, conversation starter the model that shows other collectors you’ve got your game on, Kachow!!!!!

Although it comes up as 80% sealed this car has one little trick that will push you over the edge if you are still on the fence about buying it. The price tag isn’t too friendly but doable, there is one thing that makes this a must-have.

This Lightning McQueen comes with an opening engine hood and detailed engine! YES!

Something most fans would have never seen before now sits in your living under a spotlight like a burlesque actress on display to the world! You own this show! And, kudos to Schuco for the clever inclusion because this just made this model highly desirable to PIXAR fans, model car collection fans who really dig getting movie cars, and die-hard Lightning McQueens. FORGET ABOUT THE CHILDREN! Within just a few days ago have you made your amends with Santa? If not, then my suggestion would be to order this off the Schuco website before it completely disappears into collections around the world. This is the sort of thing a lot of adult collectors would be gifting to themselves.

The engine is quite detailed with its flat-pan carburetor, which looks like it’s sitting on top of a V8 cast-iron block, which could be confirmed by the 8 spark plug cables grouping into the starter chamber, wire harnessing going down the sides of the engine bay. We are talking about quite a bit of detail which have a lot of engine pundits trying to figure out what the engine is based on.

It has been ages since I’ve gotten this excited about a 1/18 model and the difference feels exhilarating. It’s nice to have something different from the usual fare that we always talk about. I do hope this isn’t the end and merely the beginning. And, what I mean, is the full gamut of ‘CARS’ stars making it in 1/18.

In fact, maybe the next big model from this franchise should be ‘Mater’. I would love to side this up next to a 1/18 version off the rusty tow truck with lots of heart. Let’s buy up all the Lightening McQueens and show Schuco we want more! MORE! MOOORREEE!!!

THE

STATION WAGON WITH EXTRA GRUNT

There is always some weird thrill in being able to collect the 1/18 model of the cars you have driven and enjoyed. Like a badge of honor, you present to friends and family when they come by and raise an eyebrow at your mountainous collections of cars while quietly inquiring if the kids are still in school. I am one of those people I have to say who likes stacking up the cars I have driven in my lifetime.

Fortunately, I have had many friends who have had to be treated for having Sti’s and so I have had the opportunity to roll around in quite a few. This model of Forrester has been a firm fav of mine and one of the few cars I wish I could own 1:1. While looking at the glass half full I realize how fortunate I am to have at least, this wonderful recreation or should I say 1/18 replica by DNA Collectibles and I say replica because when DNA does a car they really ‘DO’ a car.

DNA COLLECTIBLES HAVE CARVED OUT FOR THEMSELVES A VERY ATTRACTIVE NICHE, CONCENTRATING ON SPECIFIC CAR BRANDS AND REALLY PERFECTING THEM SAAB, VOLVO AND SUBARU

DNA Collectible have a long list of Subaru’s they have been putting together and one of the most prized pieces in my collection is the Subaru Baja in Canary Yellow by DNA Collectibles, right now the Forrester sits on my personal working space, and I can’t help but think, that this would not have acquired such a prized space if it didn’t look as good as it did. I think I will soon be drowning in Subaru’s from DNA COLLECTIBLES.

Even the interior which usually never sees the light of day due to this being a pure resin model has an insanely detailed set up right down the MOMO short shifting gear stick, and if I’m not mistaken MOMO 3 spoked steering wheel as well. This model is truly flush with detail and lots for you to discover when you get yourself one for the season. But you’ll have to act fast as very few numbers of the black and white versions are available.
