SATURDAY April 14 the residents of the Hinchinbrook Marina and members of the public attended a meeting to find out what is happening with the ownership of the Marina and work that needs to be done to restore infrastructure damaged in Cyclone Yasi. Approximately 50 people attended the meeting and there was a last-minute scrabble to ensure there were enough chairs. Nick

MORE than 300 people gathered at the Coral Sea Battle Memorial in Cardwell on Sunday, May 6, to pay their respects to the servicemen who fought in and lost their lives in the WWII Battle of the Coral Sea between 4 – 8 May 1942.

The entrance to the Park has a newly erected blue arch that bears the name ‘Coral Sea Battle Memorial Park.’ This arch was erected in the last few days before the ceremony with the help of community members and the local council.

Both Australia and the United States fought in the Pacific Ocean against the Imperial Japanese Navy. Each year a member of the Naval Attaché, United State Navy, part of the Embassy of the United States of America based in Canberra, comes to pay respects to the fallen. Continues PG3

Dametto from the Katter party came as the state representative, the Mayor of Cassowary Coast Council John Kremastos was present, and Cardwell’s councillor Glen Raleigh also attended. Progress on the marina site has stalled, and residents are awaiting a ruling from the Cairns magistrate because the case has been submitted to the Supreme Court. Without a ruling from the

court, many of the residents’ most pressing concerns, such as sewage disposal and road maintenance, cannot be resolved. Development legislation changed shortly after the original terms and conditions of the Hinchinbrook Marina agreement were written, and the marina land is now set to be listed under an updated version of a body corporate-style

agreement. Details in the agreement have created challenges for the residents of the marina, especially regarding where to pay rates and who is responsible for sewerage and roads. The Australian Restructuring Insolvency & Turnaround Association (ARITA ), the Queensland Law Society, and Offermans Partners are the organisations that were appointed last August continues page 3

“THE NEW CASTAWAYS”

PROMISES NEW SEASON FOR CASSOWARY COAST

CASTAWAYS Resort in Mission Beach is demonstrating a strong commitment to the region in a proposed $70 million rebuild that will more than quadruple room capacity and generate hundreds of local jobs in construction and operations. “The New Castaways” will include a genuine regional conference facility, five pools (two existing and three additional), expanded multi-level dining and underground parking for 160 cars. The project will generate significant growth in the region, stimulating a prosperous and sustainable local and regional tourism industry. The resort has been operating for over 30 years, and the existing building has undergone many changes. Under the current owners, the resort was given a soft refurbishment in 2006, and in 2010 the Neville Smith Group spent $6M transforming the resort into an award winning beachfront resort. In 2015, the group purchased the adjacent property known as Mackays to bolster their room inventory. Despite the addition of Mackays to the Castaways overall inventory, the current resort is still struggling to cater to the growing demand in peak periods. In addition, ongoing maintenance costs are becoming prohibitively expensive. After months of analysis, the owners have determined a “knock-down and rebuild” provides the best long-term solution to the dedicated beachfront site. Resort owner James Neville-Smith said the project will provide Mission Beach and the Cassowary Coast region with the economic stimulus that the region has so long deserved. “Over the past 12 years we have steadfastly maintained our commitment to the Castaways business and the broader region. We have invested heavily in the existing asset, maintained a regional marketing presence far in excess of the scale of the business and maintained our long-held vision for the wider Mission Beach region. “This vision is based on an overarching desire to see a thriving tourism industry that ensures the character of continues page 3

THRASHING GOOD FOOTBALL SPORT

VISION JANNE RYTKONEN

IT’S a warm day for the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) in Cairns on Friday, March 16. The baton exchange at the Flecker Botanic Gardens is scheduled for a very precise 12:39 pm, and onlookers start to arrive at the main entrance half an hour earlier, standing in small groups in patches of shade and facing east, watching for the relay convoy along Collins Avenue. There’s a stir and a cheer when the runners’ shuttle bus appears from around the corner. The bus stops and a lithe young woman alights, dressed in the sports uniform of the QBR and wearing the number 047. She flashes a dazzling smile and a wave at the people across the road before turning to a relay official for final instructions. Someone says, “That’s Miss World Australia,” and so it is: Madeline Cowe of Tully, running for Cairns in the QBR on Friday after a commercial photography shoot on Thursday at the Palm Cove Allamanda Resort and before flying back down to the ANZ Stadium in Sydney for an Ed Sheeran concert on Saturday. The last several years have been a whirlwind of beauty contests, modelling gigs, publicity engagements, turf club and charity ambassadorships, volunteer trips overseas, stints as a television presenter and actor, legal studies and intern-

ships, and travel in between. A regular travel destination for the Sydney-based model has been Tully and her home on the farm where she grew up. “It’s so easy to get caught up in a life style and values where you always look at people for what they do and what they have, rather than who they are,” Madeline says. “Coming back home to Tully and my family helps keep me grounded.” And grounded she is. Madeline works as a professional model, but she is nearing the end of a media studies course with the aim of becoming a TV presenter. On top of all that, she somehow finds time to continue her professional legal studies and is still on track to be admitted as a lawyer by the end 2018, after completing undergraduate legal studies at JCU with a Bachelor of Laws in 2016. Even more remarkably, in the midst of all the glitz and glamour and popularity, she has kept her original vision of helping disadvantaged and vulnerable members of society, whether in the developing world or at home in Australia. That vision strengthened during her internship in Women’s Legal Services as Madeline listened to preliminary interviews, reviewed cases, and attended court with victims of domestic violence. continues page 3
