For nearly 60 years, Gleonda Angus Farms has provided Southwest Missouri and surrounding areas with the highest quality performance genetics. It has been 20 years since we have provided an offering of this size, and this sale will have been worth the wait! We still use the same philosophies that started the program many years ago, and that is our focus on maternal and carcass performance.

By combining our sale with Garton Angus Ranch, we are bringing you the opportunity to put time tested, successful performing cattle into your operation. Here at Gleonda Angus Farms, We continue to gather carcass data through retained ownership of our steers, feed efficiency data from the Green Springs Bull Test, and the collection of performance data on the farm.

Since our last sale a few things have change. With the 5th generation now on the farm, we have more family involvement than ever.

Our grandson Traves Merrick is now our herdsman, along with his wife Bailey and son Waylon. Within the last year, Traves has got our ET program off the ground at full speed. We are very excited to make the ET program a huge part of our future sales! We have also enrolled all of our females in the MaternalPlus® program, to utilize more data collection resources offered by the American Angus Association. Both of our daughters, Gina Becker and Lana Merrick, also stay involved in our operation.

A Legacy of Angus Traditions Norman, Vicki, George, and Crystal and granddaughters Irene and Edith Garton are proud to welcome you to our first GleondaGarton Legacy of Performance Sale. When we started Garton Angus in 1971 as a small family operation we purchased females from top herds in WI, IA, & CO and bought our bull from Gleonda Angus. They later bought bulls from us. Combined, our two ranches have been producing quality performance-based cattle for over one hundred years. We, like them, have been enrolled in the maternal plus program for the last two years.

With this sale, we offer our legacy of high-performance to you. In 1973, we started using artificial insemination and keeping records with AHIR. In 1981 we collected our top producing cows for embryo transfer and continue that practice today. Most of the cows we are offering in this sale are under six years of age and all the cows have been bred for fertility and maternal qualities. Bulls offered have been raised on fescue and are ready to work. Since the late 1990’s, we’ve sent bulls to test stations such as OBI at Stillwater, OK, and Green Springs Bull Test, Nevada, MO, and have had high-indexing and high-selling bulls at both places. For several years George and Crystal have sold the highest-selling bulls at Green Springs to producers in NE, MT, and OK. While improving our bull selection using performance data, we have also collected detailed carcass information through 20 years of sending home-raised steers to Mo Steer Feed Out through the University of MO Extension. Several years our steers were the high net-profit group at Tri-County Feed lot in SW Iowa.

Norman has served as a director for the Missouri and National Angus Boards and for Certified Angus Beef gaining knowledge to improve the herd. He was honored as Seed stock Producer of 2014 by The Southwest Mo Beef Cattle Improvement Association and the ranch was recognized by Four State Angus Association for years of service in 2017.

Angus producers can invest in DNA testing through the American Angus Association to identify more of the genetic potential of an animal. The Kleeman family invest in genomic profiles so that they can provide their customers with the most accurate information available in genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs). Bulls with GE-EPDs have significantly more accurate EPDs than bulls that have not been tested. For many traits, the accuracy of these sale bulls is comparable as if they have already sired 12 or more calves.

Lot 5 Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) are provided by the American Angus Association to provide valuable information on registered Angus cattle for important traits such as calving ease, growth, and marbling. The challenge with EPDs is that on younger and unproven animals, EPDs are not as accurate.

This sometimes results in a bull or heifer not performing to the cattle producer’s expectation. For example, a commercial producer may purchase a bull with a high weaning weight EPD, but be disappointed in the lack of growth by the bull’s progeny.

In recent years researchers have worked diligently to identify the genetic contribution of various DNA markers. By incorporating this DNA information into the EPDs, the American Angus Association is able to provide much more accurate EPDs called “genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs). This technology has advanced considerably in just the past couple years. When an animal is profiled on the GeneSeek Angus GGP-LD, the EPD accuracies are equivalent on several traits to as if the profiled animal has 12 or more progeny.

As you evaluate the bulls in this sale offering, you can have greater confidence that these bulls will perform to your expectations. Lot 7 A Few Tips On Managing Yearling Bulls *If your group has too many cows or heifers for one yearling bull (suggested 10 to 15 head), don’t put all the bulls out at the start of the season. If you turn them all out at once, they are likely to all lose weight and not be successful in covering the herd. If you have two bulls, put one in for two weeks, then pull him and turn out the other one. The forced rest and a little feed and fly control will make him stronger. Using the every two weeks rotation, if one bull is a stronger breeder, he will cover what the other bull missed. *A yearling bull should not be out in a Missouri pasture from mid-July through August. Bulls generally shed their first two incisors about 18-20 months of age. That combined with fescue endophyte and heat stress, could cause the bull to get so nutritionally stressed that it will take a long time to get him back in shape.

Spur Franchise of Garton was the top selling bull at the Green Springs Test Bull Sale for George and Crystal Garton on November 25, 2013. He sold to three Registered Angus breeders from NE, MT, and OK. He had an index of 120.5 making him the top indexing bull of all breeds on that test. His carcass traits were outstanding with ribeye ratio of 123.4 and intramuscular fat ratio of 136.9. He is the sire of two calves in this sale.
