West Tennessee can also be included and sometimes, Texas and Florida claim to be in the Deep South due to their shared borders. These states are famous for nature, music as well as outstanding cuisine.

Known as the Peach State, history abounds here in Georgia, and you can see many sites from the Civil War as it swept across the Southern States. Georgia is also known for its music with Ray Charles and Otis Redding calling this state home.
SAVANNAH
Savannah – is the oldest city in Georgia where art, period architecture, trendy boutiques and haunted stories are all set under a veil of Spanish moss. Whether your ideal pace is strolling around the famous Forsyth fountain or a wild night of cabaret and karaoke, Savannah provides the perfect playground. History buffs swarm to Savannah, taking in the rich, significant sites like Old Fort Jackson, Fort Pulaski National Monument and Bonaventure Cemetery. Fashionistas comb Broughton Street for high-end designs, and foodies crave specialties in gourmet shops. Antebellum Trail
This is also the state and birthplace where Elvis grew up. From humble beginnings in Tupelo, you will find a museum honouring the late musician, his childhood trailer is still preserved, as is the Pentecostal Church that the Presley family attended. It was at this church that Elvis was first exposed to Gospel music which influenced his musical career.
With Alabama to the east, the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and its famous river to the west. This state was the site of multiple Civil War battles, has amazing landscapes, and is part of the famed Mississippi Trail. Home to American history, literature, art, and music. The second largest river in the USA, that’s the mighty Mississippi starts in Minnesota and flows through 10 states ending downstream in New Orleans.
PETRIFIED FORESt
One of the most popular places to visit is the Petrified Forest National Park in Flora, a park and museum that contains wood from 36 million years ago! The entire forest was submerged in mud and saturated with minerals, preventing decay and preserving the dead trees.
MISSISSIPPI BLUES TRAIL
If you really want to experience the blues you should try the Mississippi Blues Trail this takes you to sites throughout Mississippi, from classic music joints to bookstores and museums explaining the history and evolution of this region. Stand in a Mississippi Delta cotton field and imagine the backbreaking work of both men, women, and children picking cotton from daylight to dusk in searing heat! At the end of the day when you sit in a dark place with a cool beer and listen to that blues music, you can hear how soulful and lonely the songs are. The trail can be taken at your own pace to craft an itinerary that suits you – start in Memphis and travel south down Highway 61 and 49 and end in Vicksburg.
Tip - One of the best-known blues venues in Mississippi is Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale. If you’re lucky, you’ll not only get to hear authentic Delta blues, but you can also meet actor Morgan Freeman, one of the owners of the club.

Tennessee has music deep within its soul, bluesy rhythms of the African Americans gave rise to the country music that makes the likes of Nashville and Memphis famous. Chattanooga is known as one of the most beautiful and cleanest cities in the USA and Knoxville is building a name for itself as one of the best craft beer towns in the Southeast. Visit Belle Meade Plantation a 30-acre historic site 6 miles west of Nashville and considered one of the country’s most grand mansions representing the antebellum period of American history. In this state, we have the coloured peaks of the Smoky Mountains, lush valleys, and the hot and sticky lowlands near Memphis.

You simply must visit RCA – a recording studio where the likes of Elvis, Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, and David Bowie laid down their tracks. Over 47,000 songs were recorded in this venue with Elvis himself clocking up 200 hits such as “It’s Now or Never” “Are You Lonesome Tonight” and “Devil in Disguise” You can even play the piano used to create some of his greatest hits. The Hall of Fame has a collection of over 2.5 million artifacts including Elvis Presley’s solid gold Cadillac and Hank Williams’ famous white suit.
CIVIL RIGHTS ROOM AT THE NASHVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY
The collection here honours Nashville’s role and influence in American history. An inscription from 1960 when Martin Luther King visited, photographs of school desegregation, sit-ins, and marches. To feel the real heart and soul of Nashville you need to get off the main drag of Broadway to experience other parts of the city, unique boutiques, a vibrant art scene, and a rise in the eclectic food scene sprouting from its southern roots.
GRAND OLE OPRY
If you like country, then you will have already heard of the Grand Ole Opry, this is Nashville’s most-visited tourist destination, founded in 1925 there are no bad seats in this venue, and simply the biggest names in country music play here alongside fresh and new talent. Iconic stars such as Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Garth Brooks to name only a few!
If you are a lover of history and music of all genres, then you need to add the Ryman Auditorium to your list. With a history spanning 130 years and influences in rock, hip hop, bluegrass, and indie alongside the compulsory country! These 2 music giant venues are a 20-minute drive apart.
Soul was forged in Memphis. The Stax Museum of American Soul Music laid down tracks for the greats such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Eddie Floyd, and Wilson Pickett. Sun Studio is often referred to as the “birthplace of rock & roll” Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, and Carl Perkins recorded together here in 1956. Beale Street has tons of venues such as B.B. Kings Blues Club.
So, when you’re in the home of the blues, it’s only appropriate to kick things off in Beale Street. By day, you can visit BBQ joints for burgers and by night, tourists and residents alike line the streets moving from club-to-club sipping on drinks as it’s the only place in Tennessee you can legally walk the streets, alcohol in hand. Head to midtown and hang with the locals at Overton Square, an entertainment district with restaurants, bars, live music, a cinema with a difference and a comedy club.
As with all cities you need to be savvy, so always keep an eye on your belongings and where you wander.
There are more than 2,000 churches, (the majority of which are Baptist) in the Memphis area and to really ingratiate yourself why not join the open-door policy on a Sunday, tourists are welcome to respectfully join congregations in worship, you will often find a full band and choir. Don’t forget to have a few coins for the collection plate!

Elvis bought this kitschy, gloriously bizarre 13.8-acre mansion in 1957 for just over $100,00 and whilst Elvis was born in Mississippi, he was a true son of Memphis. This house is the 2nd most visited house in the USA with the White House in 1st place. You can visit the Meditation Garden for free where you can view the graves of Elvis and his family up close. The National Civil Rights Museum displays exhibits from the Civil Rights Movement, dated 1619 to 2000, including the room in which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. resided in April 1968. The Museum is located at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN, where on April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. It’s immersive, and compelling.

BIRMINGHAM
At the foot of the Appalachian Mountains and the heart of the state, Birmingham is Alabama’s largest city and offers plenty to do. (Montgomery is the capital) The historical downtown invites you to visit important civil rights sites such as Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and the park that was the staging ground for protest marches during the Civil Rights Movement in the 60’s. A lot of the restaurants serve local craft beers and offer live music. Take a visit to Muscle Shoals and the Fame Recording Studio (1 hr 40 minutes from Birmingham) known as “The Hit Recording Capital of the World” where Aretha Franklin, The Osmonds, Etta James and, Otis Redding came to record their songs.

BATON ROUGE
Bordered by the state of Mississippi to the east, Texas to the west, and Arkansas to the north, with the Gulf of Mexico to the south. Baton Rouge is the capital and as you might suspect New Orleans is its largest city. Here you will find a melting pot of French, African, American, and French-Canadian cultures. Reflected in both its mix of Creole and Cajun and this goes back to the migration history, both are strongly influenced by French culture. Cajuns are the French colonists who settled in the Canadian maritime provinces Nova Scotia & New Brunswick in the 1600’s.
THE CREOLE NATURE TRAIL
Dive into the colourful history of Louisiana in downtown Baton Rouge at the Old State Capitol and the Old Governor’s Mansion. And while you’re there, take a bird’s-eye view of the city from the observation deck of the 34-story Louisiana State Capitol, or walk across the street and soak in the culture at the Capitol Park Museum, a Louisiana State Museum. Baton Rouge pulsates with a unique rhythm and vibrant music scene. From the soulful sounds of gospel and blues to country, Cajun and Zydeco
One of only 31 scenic byways, known as the “All American Road”. The trail is 180 miles of bayous, marshlands, and beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. The area is home to the Louisiana Outback, a habitat to many unique species of birds and wildlife, and the local alligator population!
This city waits for the dark in anticipation for the beats to start - Catch an early show at Frenchmen Street clubs and see big-name musical acts at the various theatres. Or simply stroll along Bourbon Street and St. Claude Avenue for the bars, and clubs playing phenomenal music. For an entirely different vibe, embark on a guided night-time ghost tour of the French Quarter - if you’re not afraid of the dark! With live jazz and cocktails, and views to remember. Let’s start with the cemeteries! Famous the world over these graveyard crypts and mausoleums are built above-ground due to the high-water table, it’s a bit creepy, but you might be lucky enough to experience one of the celebratory funeral processions known as Jazz Funerals. Another place worth visiting is the garden district, part of uptown New Orleans and located in the fancy part of town where you will see opulent mansions with beautiful architecture. Take the dark-green streetcar to see the length and breadth of St Charles Avenue.
The original settlement of New Orleans, called Vieux Carré, French Quarter, or simply The Quarter, is the oldest neighbourhood in the city. So much of what makes New Orleans unique is captured in the melting-pot atmosphere of the French Quarter. The premier destination for unique antiques is Royal Street, with its hidden courtyards and buskers dating back to the 18th century where high-end shops sell historical, one-of-a-kind objects. The outdoor French Market has local crafts and clothing and Louisiana sauces and spices. The prime time to visit is on weekends just after brunch. As you meander through the square, observing the street performers and artist booths, be sure to tip, even if it’s just pocket change.
We always recommend 2 days if visiting New Orleans with its French Quarter, raucous Mardi Gras, festivals, and jazz music. There is simply just way too much to eat, drink and see in this city - New Orleans oozes and pulses with life. The early hours in New Orleans are made for quiet walks with a café au lait and a camera.

The Compact Plus vehicle is one of the smallest C-Class RV’s. It features a new and improved layout and is narrower than our larger motorhomes. The medium size vehicle, the C25, has been a stalwart of fleet design for many years. With a rear corner double bed as well as a double bed over the cab it is ideal for two couples or a family of up to five - like the C19 the dinette area easily converts into another bed.
The C30 vehicle is the largest motorhome on the fleet. Its special feature is the large separate bedroom at the rear with its 5ft wide bed! There is also a double bed over the cab, a convertible sofa-bed and a convertible dinette bed. The shower is separate from the toilet/basin as well in the C30.

Known as the grand dame of Royal Street, Hotel Monteleone founded in 1886 is one of the last great family owned and operated hotels in New Orleans. The hotel has been featured in many films and TV shows. The Carousel Bar opened in 1949 becoming New Orleans’s first and only rotating bar with live entertainment 4 times a week. DAY 4: Jackson to Birmingham – first the Civil Rights Education Centre and understand how they are influencing the next generation of leaders, then the Margaret Walker Centre. Some of us are explorers and like getting lost and enjoy the buzz of discovery, even if it means we have taken a wrong turn more than once and the atmosphere in the car is frosty! You are the DIY’s. If you like to turn up the sound on the radio and take to the open road then our RV’S will hit that spot for you. The perfect choice for the free spirits!
TIPPING: In America tipping is a common and expected practice. Suggested tips are 10-20% of the bill for meals in restaurants and the same to taxi drivers. About $1 per bag or suitcase carried by bellboys or porters at hotels or airports is the norm. If going on an escorted tour, check beforehand whether tips are included. If not, the tour guide and others will expect at tip.
DRIVING: You will need a full valid EU or UK licence to drive in the US. You are legally allowed drive depending on the state between 16-18 years of age but most car hire companies will require you to be over 21years to rent a car and there is usually a surcharge if you are under 25 years old. Seat belts are compulsory, and they drive on the right. Remember that speed limits are in mph Strictly enforced speed limits are signposted and vary from 24kms in school zones up to 112kms per hour on open roads There is an extensive system of roads and highways which are all well numbered and clearly marked (unlike Ireland) with directional signs. If you fancy yourself on the open road in an RV (road vehicle) we work with a reputable partner that provides us with a range of different size campervans suitable for 2 persons right up to large luxury mobile homes suitable for a group or family unit. These can all be prebooked before you travel with detailed maps and stop off points. You can even stay overnight in a national park.
Don’t forget – when travelling to the USA you will need an ESTA visa – it’s a simple process and costs around $21. We recommend that you have this secured at least 7 days before you travel. There are bogus sites out there that try to extract extra funds for helping you with the process.You don’t need them – visit the official government site https://esta.cbp. dhs.gov/esta All travel documents are the sole responsibility of the traveller. Please double check to make sure your documents are in order and passports valid.
TIMEZONES: if you are intending to travel throughout the southern states you may cross some time zones for example East Kentucky and east Tennessee are within the Eastern Time Zone (GMT -5 hours) whilst middle and west Tennessee and Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana are within the Central Time Zone (GMT -6 hours)
