Worksheet for Lesson 3:

Light and Space

In this lesson, we want you to think about light as a sculptural medium and how that idea relates to taking up space.

When creating your artwork think about the following questions: How does light take up space? How does it move through space? Can you share light? How does light change the mood of a space? Would you be interested in showing your artwork? What websites or apps do you think would be effective in showing your artwork?

Light: Using natural light, observe and document a space and how it changes when the light shifts in an amount of time (Can be at one set time or over a period of time). Once you have at least 7 images, try experimenting with different filters to see how that changes the work. Submit 5 of your favorite pieces using this technique. - Examples: - Sun rays shining through the window onto different spots of the room - Observations of the same space in different times of day and amount of light. - Observations of shadows cast from the sun on different objects at one time - Observations of shadows cast on one object over a longer period of time - Similar to using an object as a sundial b. Light painting: Using artificial light, create a light painting. (Might require more than one person). Light Painting is the technique of moving a light source while taking a long exposure photograph to “draw” or illuminate a subject within the frame. Long Exposure involves using a long-duration shutter speed to capture the stationary elements of images while blurring, smearing, or obscuring the moving elements.” Once you have at least 7 images, try experimenting with different

filters to see how that changes the work. Submit 5 of your favorite pieces using

Answer the following questions: Why did you choose your specific prompt? What is happening in your images? What does your art tell us about being in isolation? How does your artwork relate to the idea of “taking up space?” This can be submitted in written form or you can create a video of you discussing your artwork. Submit your work to Ms. Price’s google classroom.

In the last assignment, you were exploring light and space. In this assignment you will be exploring sound in space.

Some important terms to remember during this project: Acoustics: (from Dictionary.com) The properties or qualities of a room or building that determine how sound is transmitted in it. Sound Art: (from Wikipedia) An artistic discipline in which sound is utilised as a primary medium. Like many genres of contemporary art, sound art may be interdisciplinary in nature, or be used in hybrid forms. Field Recording: (from Wikipedia) An audio recording produced outside a recording studio, and the term applies to recordings of both natural and human-produced sounds.

Step 1: Check out each of the following artists. Think about how they integrated sound into their art. How did the space change the sound? How did the sound change the space?

Step 2: Based on the recordings you just listened to, choose ONE of the following prompts. Following the directions, turn in your work to Google Classroom.

Prompt 1: Record sounds within your home. Try playing with different materials to create a unique recording or just record the sounds that are already occurring in a room. Record at least five separate 30 second recordings. Playback each recording and listen to them carefully. Turn in your two favorites. Along with your recordings, submit a document answering the following questions: 1. What did you like about the two recordings you submitted? 2. Did you create the sounds you recorded using found objects or did you record what was already occurring in the room?

3. Write 2-3 sentences about what the sounds made you think of when you listened to them after recording them.

Prompt 2: Walk around outside and record the sounds that you hear. Record at least five separate 30 second recordings.Playback each recording and listen to them carefully. Turn in your two favorites. Write 2-3 sentences about what the sounds made you think of when you listened to them after recording them.
