Building community Community has always been an important part of the Cass County Communication Network. There’s a pink sticky note on my computer that reads “Promote things that impact community in positive ways or inspire people to instigate positive MICHELLE LAIRD change.” Some might argue that I’m EDITOR/PUBLISHER spilling my secrets writing that, but when we were developing the Cass County Communication Network, I referred to that pink note daily to keep my focus.

A few weeks ago, we watched that mantra take shape. Someone posted a Facebook® status update about two dogs that had been found. I reposted it to our fans on our Cass County Calendar page on Facebook. About 24 hours later, my husband saw a post on one of his friend’s walls about two missing dogs. He was able to call both the person missing the dogs and the person who’d posted that they found the dogs, and a few hours later, the dogs had been reunited with their owners. It was a huge testament to the power of the community that our Facebook fans have built, and it’s the little things like that that keep us excited about doing what we do every day.

It’s been incredible to watch our visions take shape.

Every day, we check our Facebook page, analyze our ZHE WUDIÀF DQG UHDOL]H WKDW SHRSOH WUXO\ FDUH DERXW our community and what happens in it. :H·YH SRVWHG VRPH URXJK VWRULHV LQ RXU ÀUVW PRQWK — the state announced plans to lay off 355 people at the State Hospital shortly after we launched, and last weekend we found ourselves letting people know that two teenagers had been stabbed near a local restaurant. But what makes it easier to write those stories is seeing how much people care.

Throughout my career as a journalist, I’ve adopted D WUDGLWLRQ RI HQYLVLRQLQJ DW OHDVW RQH VSHFLÀF UHDGHU for every story I write. It truly amazes me that when

we post a story, our readers can interact with us and let us know what they’re thinking. It makes doing what we do a lot of fun, and it makes covering the bad stuff a little easier to know that our readers are on board with us, doing their own bit to instigate positive change in our community.

I think I probably glance at my pink sticky note 100 times per day. But our readers are the ones that make it happen, and for that, we can’t thank you enough.

Summer’s coming to an end — in the midst of launching our new endeavor, I kind of feel like I missed it. But now we’re on to one of my favorite times of year — late summer and early fall in Cass County are beautiful and busy times. We look forward to sharing them with you!

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. - Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) is expanding its lineup of energy savings programs with the addition of an appliance recycling home pickup program for residential electric customers. &XVWRPHUV ZKR RZQ ROGHU LQHIĂ&#x20AC;FLHQW UHIULJerators and freezers can schedule a free pickup and receive a $35 incentive reward through NIPSCOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Appliance Recycling Program.

Each old refrigerator or freezer requires an DYHUDJH RI WR NLORZDWW KRXUV N:K WR operate annually. If you’d like to join them, they’ll be holding auditions for the 2010-2011 season Monday, August 30 through Thursday, September 2 from 4-6 p.m. in the Logansport High School Choir Room. Auditions are open to all third through twelfth grade girls and third through eighth grade boys from Logansport and the surrounding areas. Individual auditions will last approximately ten minutes, and students do not have to have a prepared song. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the audition. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re anxiously waiting on Pioneer, Lewis Cass and Logansport students to get back in school. Most principals are very anxious to engage their students in projects to improve their own school or local community condition.
