sat at my table. He said he hoped he’d be home before American Idol started. And that was when I realized that “politicians” are real people, too. In May, we’ll be electing the people who will make decisions about what’s best for the city of Logansport for the next four years. We’ll elect a mayor, seven council members and a clerk-treasurer.

Those we choose have a lot of responsibility on their hands. I’ve heard several people say “I’m not interested in politics,” recently. We’re not choosing “politicians.” We’re choosing residents just like ourselves who have chosen to take on the task of trying to do what’s best for our city with a limited budget. They’re the ones who’ll make the tough decisions about how to fund our city. As the candidates make the rounds to campaign, listen to what they have to say. An update from Japan
At the April 4 Logansport City Council meeting, Mayor Mike Fincher shared the following letter from the former mayor of Mibu, Hideyo Shimizu.These are his remarks following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Logansport officials have been exploring the possibility of a sister city relationship with Mibu. Dear Mayor Mike Fincher, I express my heartfelt thanks to you for sending a letter of your sympathy. This March, a powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 9.0 hit nortern Japan (Tohoku and Kanto district). Coastal towns and cities were devastated by ensuing tsunami (tidal wave). This earthquake is said to be the biggest ever recorded in the world. So very strong temors were felt in the wide area of northern and neastern Japan. This time its damage was catastrophic. In Tochigi prefecture, much damage were casue by massive earthquake but in my town (Mibu) we are all save and have received little damage. Please let the people of your city know that we are all safe and making a living as usual. And also please let them know how we are grateful for their sympathy. Very truly yours, Hideyo Shimizu

“It’s incredible what’s happened in the last thirty days,” Logansport Economic Development Foundation president Nolan “Skip” Kuker told the LEDF board during their March 18 meeting. Since then, five companies have committed to invest more than $8.5 million dollars in Cass County. A $5,675,000 investment at The Anderson’s Clymers ethanol facility will include a corn oil extraction system, as well as manufacturing equipment upgrades. Kuker says Logansport Machine is investing $634,000 in new equipment, ABC Metals is investing $468,000 in real estate to build a 12,000 sq ft. building addition that will house an investment of $620,000 in new equipment and Small Parts will purchase $1,200,000 in new equipment. Ohio-based Eby Trailers broke ground March 28 on a $568,000 building that will house a sales and service facility. Kuker appeared before the city and county councils with representatives from each company. The county council unanimously approved the tax abatements for four years for The Ander-
son’s and eight years for Eby Trailers. The Logansport City Council unanimously approved the abatement for Logansport Machine for a period of five years. Abatement for ABC Metals, Inc. was approved on a 6-0 vote with Councilman Brannon Meagher abstaining. Abatement for Small Parts, Inc. was approved on a 5-1 vote. Councilman Kerry “Worly” Worthington voted against the Small Parts tax abatement and Councilman Brannon Meagher abstained. Kuker says that the abatements allow companies to invest thousands of dollars but gives them a tax break. The companies will see their taxes phased in over the period of the abatements. County Council president Ralph Anderson describes tax abatement as a tool for the county to attract business to expand productivity. Anderson says that while the county won’t see tax revenue from the business for the first year, it allows the business to get income coming in and increase employment, which also increases the tax base.

Residents can log on daily and cast 10 votes for their zip code. Logansport finished 23rd in the contest’s first round earlier this year, receiving more than 120,000 cheers over six months. Grand Marais, MI logged 1,281,724 cheers to win the first place prize of $40,000 in the first round. Ten more prizes, ranging from $10,000 to $40,000 are up for grabs in the contest’s second round. Logansport is currently ranked 15th. To cheer, you just have to provide some basic information, enter your e-mail and zip code and click the cheer button ten times per day. Indiana will participate in the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut at 10:15 a.m. on April 19. Other states will be participating on April 28. There are more than 1 million registered participants, and more than 410,000 of those are from Indiana — more than any other state. HOW IT WORKS On May 3, 2011, the major parties (Republican and Democrat) will nominate candidates for mayor, city council and clerk-treasurer. Only registered voters who live within the city limits will be eligible to vote in the primary. Voters will need to specify their party to poll workers and will only see the candidates on their party’s ticket when they head to the voting machine. Republicans have contested races for mayor, clerk-treasurer, city council, ward 2 and city council at large (2 seats). Democrats have a contested race for mayor. Uncontested candidates will also appear on the ballot. Absentee voting will take place at the Cass County Government Building (courthouse) on weekdays starting April 18 and running through May 2. Three vote centers will be open for early voting April 28 through 30 and for election day voting on May 3. You can check your voter registration and polling place at www.indianavoters.com.You must bring a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID card, U.S. passport or military ID, to vote.
