You might only think about CCEC when you get your bill or if the power goes out, but as a cooperative owned by our members, we strive to provide much more than just a bill. In this issue of the Highline Notes, we feature many of the products and services we have available for our members.

Account information update In today’s world, having the ability to access electronic information is critical to remain informed. On our web site, you can update your email and phone information so we can keep you informed of outages and other important issues that may affect your service.

Commitment to Community Operation Round Up is a foundation supported by the members of CCEC that is funded by rounding up your electric bill to the nearest dollar.

Over $2.5 million has gone back into the community to help individuals and nonprofit organizations in need. Additionally, to continue our support for education and workforce development, CCEC donates a $1,000 scholarship to each of the thirteen high schools in our service area through the Dollars for Scholars program.

Cooperative difference Cooperatives like Cass County Electric are not-for-profit businesses that operate for the benefit of their members. We don’t deal out cash to faceless investors at the end of the quarter or year. If you pay your electric bill from us each month, YOU are one of our investors. In fact, after a period of time, we give the money back to you in the form of capital credits as explained above.

Member Advocacy Energy Review

Looking to learn the cause behind high energy use in your home or business? CCEC offers on-site walk-throughs with an assessment and analysis of the energy characteristics of your space. This review will give you the information you need to help you manage your energy costs and make changes that can impact your energy consumption. For more details, call our energy management team at 800.248.3292.

Off-Peak

CCEC’s off-peak programs offer participating members lower rates in exchange for managing their electricity use during times of high energy demand, such as extremely cold winter days. The most popular off-peak option is dual heat, where a member’s primary heat source is electric, but they also have a backup source, such as propane or fuel oil. The majority of the time, the member is able to use the electric heat as desired, but if energy demand is high, CCEC is able to automatically switch the member to their backup heat source.

In addition to a discounted off-peak rate, rebates are available for the installation of qualifying heating systems, water heaters, and electric vehicle chargers (see pg. 9) enrolled in the off-peak program.

To be eligible for incentives, all systems must have qualified backup, be new equipment, and be controlled on CCEC’s off-peak program. Credits will be applied to electric bill after visit from CCEC technician. These one-time incentives are in addition to the discounted off-peak electric rate. Reliability

CCEC strives to provide affordable, reliable electric service. As such, each year we focus on taking specific steps to ensure that outage frequency and duration are kept to a minimum. At the same time, we conduct extensive planning to ensure we are able to meet future needs within our service territory. With our combination of hightech tools (see below) and a team of experts, our members can rest assured that we are looking out for their energy needs.

Technology

Advanced Metering Infrastructure

Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is one of the tools CCEC uses to maintain reliability. This high-tech network of devices utilizes a two-way automated communications system (TWACS) to give CCEC technicians access to real-time data from electric meters and other devices. With this rapid communication, CCEC can spot and troubleshoot power quality issues remotely and resolve them before they get worse. When used to spot a malfunctioning device, AMI technology can even prove to be a safety enhancement. Despite having been fully completed for just one year, CCEC’s massive AMI conversion project has already proved its worth.

Drone

Drones are fast becoming tools of the trade in the utility industry. In 2017, CCEC began using an automated aerial system (UAS) for maintenance purposes. The drone’s ability to access hard-to-reach locations, such as pole tops or equipment located in challenging terrain, has already made it a valuable timesaver. With its flight capability and high-resolution camera, technicians and engineers can get a clear view without having to dispatch a line crew.

Much like AMI technology, CCEC’s drone is a new tool that is quickly paying off.

Electric Vehicles

CCEC has been an active supporter of electric vehicles (EV) and the effort to make EV charging stations publicly available in the area. In 2016, CCEC partnered with West Acres Mall to install an EV charger in the mall parking lot.

A recent partnership with Lignite Energy Council and Sanford Health has resulted in four chargers to be installed at the new Sanford hospital this fall. CCEC and Lignite Energy hope to continue with further charger installations in 2018.

Community Support Operation Round Up

Funded by the Cass County Electric Cooperative Foundation, Operation Round Up (ORU) helps individuals and nonprofit organizations in need in our communities. Eighty percent of CCEC members participate in the program – each month, their bills are rounded up to the nearest dollar, hence the name Operation Round Up. Additionally, CCEC employees can contribute by having their paychecks rounded down. Since forming in 1993, CCEC’s ORU program has given back more than $2.5 million. A few of the organizations to receive help from ORU so far in 2017 include ShareHouse, Anne Carlsen Center, and Jeremiah Program.

Volunteerism

Volunteering has always been a key trait for CCEC and its employees. Many departments at the co-op spend time on group volunteer efforts for programs and organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Great Plains Food Bank, and the Emergency Food Pantry (see pg. 8). Employees also had the opportunity to participate in beautification projects at Fort Ransom State Park, Clausen Springs Recreation Area, and Little Yellowstone park this summer.

We are always on the lookout for new volunteer opportunies. If you know of one in your community, let us know!

Co-op Connections

On a large scale, we partner with local businesses every day to ensure they have the quality electric service needed to serve clients and customers. On a smaller scale, we offer the Co-op Connections program, where businesses can offer special deals and discounts to CCEC members who have a Co-op Connections card. The deals from participating businesses are advertised in Highline Notes, and members can benefit from the savings.

We’d love to partner with new businesses for more local deals.

Education Youth Tour

More than 1,600 high school students from around the nation participate in the annual Electric Cooperative Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. The Youth Tour consists of a fast-paced, intensive week of learning about history and American government, visiting with congressional delegation, becoming more knowledgeable about the cooperative business model, and touring museums, national monuments, and memorials.

Power Plant Tours

Every September, CCEC hosts a bus tour to Center, N.D. for a tour of the Milton R. Young power plant and the nearby coal mine. Along the way, members have the chance to see a variety of other energy industry sights.

Recently, the tour has included stops at locations such as the Prairie Sun Community Solar array and the Infinity wind turbine. The tour is a great chance to see what it takes to have a steady supply of affordable electricity to power our homes and businesses.

Speakers Bureau

Education is one of the core cooperative principles that CCEC embraces. Our expert employees can speak on a variety of topics related to electricity and the energy industry. From elementary school students to business groups, we are well versed on presentations for all types of audiences. Contact us for your next energy-related speaking event.

BAT TLING HUNGER There’s a lot to be done at the Emergency Food Pantry in Fargo.

For volunteer workers, the primary task is usually to help clients. That means receiving a menu, which includes the client’s family size, ages of the family members, and food preferences or special requests.

From the information on the menu, the volunteer fills a cart with food and hygiene items to suit the client’s needs as best as possible. The client is asked to join the volunteer to pick out a few items from coolers and freezers before the items are weighed and the client takes them home.

Before clients arrive, there is food to be sorted, shelves to be stocked, bags and boxes to be prepared to be filled, and much more. It’s a busy place that provides a valuable service for the community.

Recent stats show that more than 50,000 individuals receive food through the Emergency Food Pantry

in a year—nearly half of those are children—and these are stats from just one of the food pantries in this region.

When it comes to fighting hunger, there are many organizations in our region that do excellent work. Cass County Electric Cooperative has had longstanding relationships with many of these groups, regularly contributing funding, time, and materials to support their efforts.

Food and supply drives at CCEC offices are meant to distribute donations to agencies throughout our service territory. At least once each year, employees come together to send items to: • Rural Cass County Emergency Food Pantry • Ransom County Food Pantry • Barnes County Food Pantry • F-M Emergency Food Pantry

Each year, employees in CCEC’s member and energy services

department volunteer to work shifts at the F-M Emergency Food Pantry.

Employees in our corporate services department spend a day helping out at Great Plains Food Bank, an agency responsible for collecting and distributing food donations to food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, and other organizations working to feed the hungry in the area. Employees in the engineering and operations department deliver food for Meals on Wheels twice per month.

Volunteerism is a key element of CCEC’s role in the community. We not only strive to provide reliable, affordable electric service to our members, but we work to make our communities better places to live overall. Coming together to battle hunger is just one way we work to make small differences in the lives of our friends and neighbors who need a bit of extra help.

Most American homes feature a standard vented clothes dryer.

Despite great increases in energy efficiency in recent years, these machines are still inherently wasteful, heating conditioned air

pulled from inside the home and venting it outside. It’s a tried-andtrue, if relatively inefficient, system that has become a mainstay, but other options do exist.

In Europe, ventless dryers are much more common. These machines are typically smaller than the vented dryers we’re familiar with and are a better fit for smaller homes or older structures. Without the need for a vent, they can also be placed anywhere with access to 220-volt power.

Condenser dryers utilize two airflow loops to dry clothes. First, air is pulled into a condenser and heated. This air moves into the drum and warms the laundry, causing water to evaporate.

Instead of venting the warm air, a condenser dryer sends it back into the condenser where it’s cooled back down and used again.

The water is collected or drained away, and the process repeats until clothes are dry. A heat pump dryer operates similarly but swaps the condenser for a heat pump to recirculate warm air into the drum.

These ventless dryers use significantly less energy than traditional vented dryers. They generate less heat and are therefore easier on fabrics. The tradeoff is that ventless machines typically take longer to dry loads that are usually smaller. Ventless machines also tend to come at a similar or higher initial cost than vented dryers.

RECIPES FROM YOUR KITCHEN

Caramel Apple Bars Marlene Bunn, Enderlin

Ingredients:

1 C packed brown sugar ½ C butter, softened ¼ C shortening 1 ¾ C flour 1 ½ C quick oatmeal ½ tsp baking soda 4 ½ C peeled, chopped apples 3 Tbsp flour 1-14 oz. bag caramels

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 400°F. Mix brown sugar, butter and shortening in large bowl. Stir in flour, oats, and baking soda.

Reserve two cups of this mixture for the top. Press the remaining mixture into a 9 X 13” pan. Toss apples with the 3 T. flour, and spread over the oat mixture. Heat the caramels over low heat until melted and pour evenly over apple mixture. Sprinkle the two cups of reserved mixture on the top and press lightly into the caramel. Bake until topping is golden brown and apples are tender, about 30 minutes.

Store in a covered container in the refrigerator.

Black Bean Soup

Ingredients:

½ C celery ½ C onions ½ C shredded carrots 1 32 oz box chicken broth 1 16 oz jar regular mild salsa 3 C cooked, diced, turkey or chicken 1 15 oz can black beans, rinsed 1 15 oz can kidney beans, rinsed Preparation: Cook and cut up chicken. Sauté celery, onion and carrots in olive oil. Add remaining ingredients and heat thoroughly.

Easy Beef Stew

Ingredients:

1 ½ lbs. stew meat, do not brown 4 medium carrots, sliced 2-3 stalks celery, sliced 2 med onions, chopped 4 med potatoes, cut up 2-3 cans beefy mushroom soup Preparation: Put meat and vegetables into a Dutch oven. Cover with soup, use enough to cover all ingredients. Cover. Bake 5-6 hours at 250°F. If you like a thicker stew, add thickening at the end. Other vegetables can be added. I got this recipe from a good friend of my dad’s, Elroy Alverson.

Preparation: Mix flour, eggs, salt and warm water until dough is soft. Cook dough in kettle with boiling water and salt for 20 minutes and they float to the top. Drain, add to frying pan with onion, bacon and butter.

Mix well. Add kraut. Mix well and serve.
