In cooperatives like Cass County Electric, membership really does mean something more than just the right to buy electricity. Co-ops of all types are founded on seven cooperative principles that give us guidance and strategic direction.

Many businesses use the word “member” to describe their customers. Places like Sam’s Club or Costco and even American Express like to refer to their customers as members and charge a "fee" which allows you to purchase goods and/ or services. These are all great companies; in fact, I am a customer of two of them. However, as a “member” of Cass County Electric Cooperative you are an “owner” and have the right to vote for your Board of Directors. Each year you are allocated capital credits based on your portion of our annual margins.

We are locally owned and operated, and you are able to voice your

Voluntary and Open Membership Cooperative membership is voluntary and open to anyone able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.

Democratic Member Control Cooperative members get to vote for elected representatives, who actively participate in decision making processes.

Members’ Economic Participation Through democratic process, members control the capital of the cooperative. Members may allocate surpluses for such purposes as developing the cooperative, setting up reserves, and supporting other activities approved by the membership.

Autonomy and Independence Cooperatives are autonomous. If they enter into agreements with other organizations, including governments, they do so while maintaining autonomy and democratic control by their members.

Education, Training, and Information Cooperatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their cooperatives.

They work to inform the general public about the nature and benefits of cooperation.

Cooperation Among Cooperatives Cooperatives serve their members most effectively and strengthen the cooperative movement by working together through local, national, regional and international structures.

Concern for Community While focusing on member needs, cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities.

Nationwide, cooperatives create 2.1 million jobs and generate more than $650 billion in sales and other revenue annually. Locally, CCEC employs more than 100 people, and by the end of 2015, our revenue was more than $115 million.

Membership also gives you rights as an owner of this co-op. Member relations is not just part of what we should be doing, but in fact is the fundamental core business of the cooperative. In order to survive and thrive, we focus on the following concepts: Commitment to Community Cass County Electric is connected to you; we have a business relationship that serves you (the member) and the co-op.

Since co-ops are solely owned by people in the community, there is a mutual interest to ensure that both co-op and member succeed and prosper.

Transparency As an owner of the co-op, you have a right to know how it operates and how decisions are made that directly impact you. Transparency, combined with integrity and fairness, helps to build trust with members.

Cognition In this case, cognition is best defined as how your co-op thinks. It includes the current and historical identity, the mission and the sense of shared values with co-op members. Research, education and training are critical functions that Cass County Electric must conduct on an ongoing basis to ensure that we always have the best information to make decisions.

The cooperative business model is the best one on earth. It is up to the people who work at the co-op, who serve on the board and the members like you to ensure that the principles and values do not fade over time. First and foremost, Cass County Electric strives to be thought of as a member-owned cooperative that gives you the best value of any utility.

For Cass County Electric to thrive and for our community to flourish, we embrace your input, this is your right as a “member” of the co-op.

Operation Round Up CCEC Foundation's Operation Round Up Program reaches $2.5 million in grants!

Each year in October, the 30,000 cooperatives across the United States come together to celebrate National Cooperative Month. With apt timing, we are proud to announce that through the Operation Round Up (ORU) program, the Cass County Electric Cooperative Foundation (previously SERVE Foundation) has reached the $2.5 million milestone for grants awarded.

Cooperatives, unique businesses dedicated solely to the end-user of their products and services, create 2.1 million jobs and generate more than $650 billion in sales and other revenue annually. Excess revenues do not go to investors, they go right back to the end-users: the cooperative members.

A co-op’s focus on its members doesn’t end there. Cooperatives hold concern for their communities as a high priority – in fact, it’s actually a core principal of the cooperative business model. With this mindset, cooperatives support their communities in many ways, be it by creating jobs and providing top-notch service, or by volunteering in local projects. Cooperatives themselves make community issues a high priority, but it’s when cooperatives and their members

come together through programs like Operation Round Up that a difference can really be made.

“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all CCEC members that participated in the Operation Round Up Program,” says JoAnn Jameson, chairman of Cass County Electric Cooperative Foundation ORU board of directors. “In September, we reached an incredible milestone of awarding $2.5 million through your contributions. These dollars have been donated to individuals, organizations, and charities over the past 20 years with far-reaching impact.”

The average CCEC member participating in Operation Round Up contributes just six dollars annually.

For less than the price of a single meal over the course of a year, these contributions from CCEC members add up to benefit dozens of individuals and organizations, who in turn help others in our region.

The Operation Round Up program was born in the late-80s and it all started at, you guessed it, a cooperative. The idea came from Tom Upshaw, then-CEO of Palmetto Electric Cooperative in Hardeeville, S.C. In the face of aggressive actions

by the local investor-owned utility, Upshaw sought a way to better reinforce the cooperative difference and support his community.

Operation Round Up works by rounding up the electric bills of participating cooperative members to the nearest dollar. These extra few cents from each month are placed into the care of the Cass County Electric Cooperative Foundation.

An independent board of directors accepts applications and awards grants to individuals and nonprofit organizations in need. Today, more than 250 electric cooperatives across the U.S. participate in the Operation Round Up program.

Grants are issued only to nonprofits dedicated to improving the quality of life in our region. Individual grants are awarded on a case-by-case basis for emergencies and self-sufficiency needs. Recently, Operation Round Up grants have been used for

purchases such as a thermal imaging camera for a volunteer fire department, participants in a girls’ empowerment group, and supplies for a high school food pantry.

“What an example of the cooperative spirit,” says Jameson. “Doing together what we can’t do alone.”

On behalf of Cass County Electric Cooperative, we would like to thank each member participating in Operation Round Up. Through your contributions, we help to make our region a better place to live. We look forward to reaching many more milestones in the years to come.

Make your voice heard Come June and July each year, you won’t find the President/CEO of Cass County Electric Cooperative in the office very often. You won’t find the Vice President of Member and Energy Services in there much either. They’ve got busy jobs year round, but during the summer months there is even more information to prepare and a whole other set of meetings to attend. It’s a targeted effort that CCEC hopes will pay off a few months later in November.

For several weeks, Marshal Albright, President/CEO, and Paul Matthys, VP of Member and Energy Services, get familiar with the coffee shops, cafes, and meeting rooms around the area. It is this part of the year where CCEC officials get together with state and local legislative candidates who represent the members of CCEC. It’s a chance to share CCEC’s mission and values, to discuss the issues that affect the energy industry and, ultimately, the people who rely on affordable and reliable electric service. This is just one part of the process to keep the voice of electric cooperatives loud and strong with local, state, and national decision-makers.

Through education and political action, CCEC and other electric cooperatives hope candidates elected to office understand and support the industry. The North Dakota Rural Electric Political Action Committee (REPAC) is the political arm of the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC) and its member cooperatives. This organization directs financial support to statewide and legislative candidates who are identified as friends of the rural electric program.

Supporting candidates at the federal level is the Action Committee for Rural Electrification (ACRE), the PAC of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA). ACRE supports candidates for the U.S. House and Senate— those in office now and running for office—who will speak for and protect the interests of electric cooperatives and their consumerowners. Through the ACRE Coop Owners for Political Action® program, the 42 million cooperative consumer-owners across the country can help support those who will listen—state and federal officials who will defend local cooperatives and local communities.

tech Solar Array Monitoring Technology

Prairie Sun Community Solar’s three inverters change direct current to alternating current and also collect data from the array.

Prairie Sun Community Solar has been constructed and hooked up to the grid. The array is live and is producing energy. Most of the work has been completed and it’s time for participating members to start seeing monthly solar energy credits.

The array is pumping out kilowatthours, but that’s not all it’s doing— it’s also talking. If scenes from The Terminator are flashing through your head, rest assured. We haven’t gotten to that point . . . yet.

The kind of talking Prairie Sun Community Solar is doing is in the form of data. Three solar

power inverters are tasked with changing direct current (DC) from the array into alternating current (AC) to be used on the electric grid. They also collect a variety of information about the system and its production levels.

Information gathered at the inverter is fed into a gadget called a data logger which records data and events, making the information useable. By installing a cellular modem at the array, the data is communicated via the internet.

What all of this means is that we can see exactly how much energy

Prairie Sun Community Solar is producing from any internetcapable device.

The information from the array is translated into environmental equivalents, like how long the array could power a TV and the amount of carbon dioxide and other emissions that its energy production is offsetting. Behind the scenes, CCEC can view even more information about the array, such as voltage over time and enhanced weather overlays which allow the ability to remotely monitor performance.

The array’s generation statistics are refreshed every 15 minutes. Current and lifetime production is monitored, and production over time is charted.

Slow Cooker Caramel Apple Crumble Karen Formo, Litchville

Ingredients:

Apple mixture 1 C brown sugar ½ C granulated sugar 5 large apples, cut into chunks ¼ tsp salt 1 tsp cinnamon Topping 2/3 C oats 2/3 C loosely packed brown sugar ¼ C flour ½ tsp cinnamon 3-4 Tbs softened butter 1 tsp. vanilla extract

Preparation:

In a mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, apples, salt, and cinnamon. Spread onto bottom of slow cooker. Mix your crumble topping ingredients until it comes together. Sprinkle it over top of the apples. Cook on low for 4 hours, or high for 2 hours. Turn off heat and let sit, covered, for one hour to let the caramel thicken.

Cabbage Hot Dish

Genevieve Tamerius, Mapleton

Ingredients:

1 small head cabbage 1 lb. hamburger 1 small onion, minced 1/3 C rice – uncooked or instant

1 can tomato soup 1 can water Salt & pepper taste

Preparation:

Brown hamburger, add onion. Add rice, salt, pepper and stir. Put hamburger mixture over an inch layer of cut up cabbage in a greased casserole. Pour soup, water mixture over the top, and bake in 350° oven for 2 hours. Note: Only need to bake 1 hour if using instant rice.

Potato Dumplings Patty Korsmo, Fargo

Ingredients:

12 C of grated potatoes (10# of red) 10 C flour 3 tsp baking powder 4 tsp salt 2# salt pork

Preparation:

Cut salt pork in chunk and parboil, 1 hour. Set aside, save juice for boiling the dumplings. Blend flour, baking powder & salt. Use a blender and water to grate the potatoes. One cupful at a time, drain well, press out moisture, add to the blended flour mixture. Keep hands moistened with water as you mold the dumplings, place a chunk of salt pork into dumplings. Add flour as needed, too much flour makes them hard. Drop into boiling water (salted to taste) and boil slowly for 1 ½ hours. Serve with butter and pepper to taste.

Some people use white sugar or white syrup on top. This makes a large batch. It freezes well. Serve left overs fried in butter.

Directors are elected by ballot for a three-year term.

Nominees in Districts 4 and 5-2 must be a bona fide resident of the director district in which they are seeking directorship. Nominees in the At Large (AL) must be a bona fide resident of the electric service area of the cooperative. (See district map) The names of all candidates who submit the required information in the time and manner specified in Article III. Section 3.6 of the Bylaws will be submitted to a credentialing committee consisting of between three and eight members, as determined by the board of directors. The credentialing committee may require candidates to provide and verify additional information deemed relevant by the credentialing committee.
