editorial THE AMAZON EFFECT

Before Amazon, shopping online was occurring on a limited basis and not at a pace that was disruptive to the retail industry. Over the past few years, online shopping has increased significantly, causing retailers to rethink their business models.

As a consumer, I found myself using the convenience of online shopping to purchase a hard to find item, or just when it was convenient for me to browse and buy something at the click of a button. I assume this is the situation for many of you as well.

Amazon’s impact in the United States is quite impressive when it comes to online market share of product sales.

While Amazon’s portion of the retail market is about 4 percent of U.S. retail sales, a whopping 43 percent of 2017 e-commerce sales were purchased through Amazon. In the past year, the company’s revenue grew 31 percent to $177 billion. Overstock, eBay, Newegg, and Zappos are some other popular sites attracting online buyers.

Retail giants Walmart and Target have recently stepped up their game to compete in the online marketplace in addition to the in-store experience.

The victims of online shopping are local businesses; state, county, and city tax collection; and according to our administration, our U.S. Postal Service.

As your local electric cooperative, we encourage your support of shopping local. By shopping local, you support the businesses that employ thousands of people right here in our communities. By shopping local, you support state, county, and city tax revenue.

The other tangible of shopping local is the in-person experience of seeing, touching, and feeling what you are going to buy before you make the purchase. Online purchases are only based on price and visual appeal.

Online shopping is not going away anytime soon and will likely continue to increase over time. However, keep in mind the local businesses that support our communities, from the goods and services they provide to the jobs they support and taxes they pay. Without them, our local economies will suffer.

I have made a point over the past few months to shop locally whenever I can. I challenge everyone else in our communities to do the same.

In the February 2018 meeting of the Cass County Electric board of directors, an amendment was made to Article III, Section 3.5 (B) (vii) of the Cooperative’s bylaws.

The amendment defines that in order for an incumbent Director to be eligible to run for re-election, the Director must have obtained his/her NRECA Credentialed Cooperative Director (CCD) Certificate before the end of the incumbent Director’s first full term.

Electric Vehicles on the Horizon

Community partnerships establish early infrastructure for electric transportation

In early April, representatives of CCEC, Lignite Energy Council, Sanford Health, and local media gathered at the Sanford medical facility in West Fargo to celebrate the installation and activation of an electric vehicle (EV) charging station at the Sanford facility. The charger marks an early milestone for a joint effort between Lignite and CCEC that’s aimed at increasing awareness of EV technology and increasing public EV charging stations in the region.

“Electric vehicle technology is advancing every day,” says Chad Brousseau, manager of energy services at CCEC. “More and more vehicle manufacturers are

announcing new electric vehicle models every day, and we see that’s where that trend is going, and it’s something Cass County Electric wants to support.”

As major automotive companies begin to focus more attention on EVs, the cost of the vehicles continues to drop, becoming increasingly price competitive with traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Advancements in battery technology are continually improving the range of EVs, an important consideration for drivers looking to make an EV their main vehicle for longer road trips.

In anticipation of the growth in popularity of EVs in coming years,

partnerships with community leaders like Sanford will ensure that EV owners are able to charge their vehicles with reliable, homegrown energy. The electricity used by members of CCEC comes primarily from North Dakota resources— clean coal, wind power, hydropower, biomass, and solar power.

In 2016, CCEC partnered with West Acres Mall to install an EV charging station in the mall parking lot. CCEC’s partnership with Lignite is expected to yield further charger installations in 2018 and beyond, helping to keep the Fargo area at the forefront of emerging energy trends and technology.

CCEC congratulates new journeymen

At CCEC’s company-wide employee information meetings in March, lineworkers Joey Strauss and Blake Hoover were recognized for obtaining journeyman status. Strauss and Hoover were required to complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training, complete the lineworker certification program, and obtain approval from the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee.

Strauss is originally from the Arthur area. He began working at CCEC in 2014 as a seasonal apprentice and currently works full-time out of the Arthur service center. Hoover is from the Fargo area. He began working at CCEC in 2014 as a seasonal apprentice and currently works full-time out of the Fargo service center.

Chevy Bolt As electric vehicles shape up to be a critical future energy load for utilities like CCEC, co-op officials are learning as much as they can about the technology behind the emerging form of transportation through a hands-on approach. In early 2018, CCEC added an allelectric Chevrolet Bolt to its fleet of service vehicles.

The Chevy Bolt has an EPA-estimated range of 238 miles on a full charge. Though the range varies based on temperature, terrain, and driving behavior, EV battery technology in general is seeing rapid improvements that are resulting in greater ranges.

The Regen on Demand™ feature is a regenerative braking process that allows drivers to capture kinetic energy while slowing down and return it to the vehicle’s battery. Using the Regen on Demand™ feature, drivers can enable one-pedal driving. This allows the vehicle to be slowed and even stopped in certain circumstances without using the brake pedal.

There are a variety of charging options for the Bolt. Level 1, 120-volt charging through a standard electrical outlet provides about four miles per hour of charge. Level 2, 240-volt charging provides about 25 miles per hour of charge. Level 3 direct current fast charging provides up to 90 miles of range in 30 minutes. www.kwh.com

A miles-per-gallon gasoline equivalent (MPGe) measurement is used to compare EV fuel efficiency to internal combustion engine vehicles. The Bolt touts an EPA-estimated 128 MPGe (city) and 110 MPGe (highway). At the current regular electric rate, charging an EV would cost roughly $0.033 per mile.

The Bolt’s numerous safety features include the surround-vision bird’s-eye view camera system for parking assistance, 10 standard airbags, and highstrength steel reinforced safety cage.

The Bolt’s power source is a 60-kWh lithium-ion battery pack consisting of 288 individual lithium-ion cells.

The battery pack spans the entire floor of the vehicle and weighs in at 960 pounds!

The Bolt is propelled by a single permanent magnetic drive motor.

When charged to 75 percent capacity or greater, the motor is capable of providing 266 lb.-ft. of torque and 200 HP of power and can achieve 0-60 MPH in less than seven seconds.

SMART HOME ENTRY 4: WINDOW/DOOR CONTACT SENSOR The latest addition to our smart home system is the Leviton LURDW-W window/door contact sensor. Much like the previously added motion sensor, a window/door contact provides a wide variety of potential uses and automation possibilities.

The window/door contact consists of two pieces, one to be affixed to a stationary part of a window or door, and the other to be affixed to the section that moves. In the closed state, the two pieces of the contact will be aligned; in the open state, the two pieces will be apart. At its most basic, this device provides notification that a certain door or window has been opened and/or closed, proving useful in a countless number of potential security or energy management applications.

However, the contact really proves its worth when enhanced with automation options. Lights, devices, or whole outlets can be trigged on or off when a door opens or closes, for example. But perhaps the most valuable pairing is with a thermostat, where a change in the contact’s status can trigger changes in your home’s heating or cooling systems.

Through the SmartThings app, the contact can be set to delay a reaction, so that, for example, simply opening the patio door won’t result in thermostat changes, but leaving the patio door open for a set number of minutes will shut the A/C off in the summer.

May is National Electrical Safety Month, when we take extra time to talk about the dangers of electricity and ways to keep safe around it.

Electricity is a necessity in modern life, and we use it every day without even thinking about it. But what we need to power the tools, gadgets, and appliances that make our lives easier can be incredibly dangerous if used improperly.

The dangers of electricity are a common topic of communication at CCEC. And while we’re always trying to educate and remind others about staying safe around electricity, we also practice what we preach. Safety is the top priority at Cass County Electric Cooperative (CCEC), and we’ve taken every measure to instill a powerful culture of safety in the workplace.

Through a policy of reporting incidents, injuries, and near misses, employees spread awareness to each other and are reminded to slow down to make safety a priority throughout the work day.

“We’re not out to place blame,” says Manager of Safety Mike Mead about the safety reports. “Instead we share what has happened in the hopes that others will become aware of it and prevent it from happening again.”

As a part of the safety reports, employees are encouraged to speak up about any potentially unsafe scenarios that they witness with the mindset that it’s always better to speak up than ignore an issue that could result in injury. Job-specific safety training is provided regularly,

and all employees attend CPR/first aid and defensive driving courses every two years.

An in-house safety committee reviews all incidents and employee concerns and focuses on finding solutions to continually make CCEC a safer place to work by keeping safety at the forefront of employees’ minds. As such, safety documents are branded with the slogan, “Safety first, last and always.”

“Safety is everybody’s job,” says Mead. “It’s a job that never ends, but the safety of our members and employees is always the top priority.”

Ingredients:

1 c. melted butter 2 c. sugar 4 eggs ¼ t. salt 2 c. flour 3 t. almond flavoring ½ c. sliced almonds ¼ c. sugar Preparation: Beat together the melted butter and sugar. Add the eggs, salt, flour and almond flavoring, beat well. Pour into greased 9 X 13 inch pan. Sprinkle ½ c. sliced almonds and ¼ c. sugar on top. Bake at 350* for 25-30 minutes. Cut and serve.

Hungarian Pork Paprika Barbara Berentson, Fargo

Ingredients:

2 T. flour 1 T. paprika ½ t. salt ¼ t. pepper 1 lb. boneless lean pork, cut into 1 inch cubes 4 t. olive oil 2 cans, 14 1/2 oz. stewed tomatoes ½ c. sour cream Preparation: Toss flour, paprika, salt and pepper with meat. Brown meat in skillet with hot oil. Add tomatoes, and cook uncovered over medium heat for 20 minutes or until meat is tender, stirring frequently. Remove pan from heat and use ½ cup of sauce mixture to blend with sour cream. Return mixture to the skillet and blend well. Do not boil. Serve over noodles.

browned and drained 1 jar spaghetti sauce 1 Tbsp. sugar ½ tsp. oregano ½ tsp. garlic powder 4 oz. mozzarella cheese Preparation: Break noodles into 2” pieces and cook as directed on package.

Drain noodles, and spread in a 9X13 inch pan. Mix together margarine, parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, egg, and milk. Stir mixture into the noodles.

Spread cottage cheese on top. Combine hamburger, sauce, sugar, oregano, and garlic powder. Spread over cottage cheese layer. Bake at 350* for 30 minutes, sprinkle mozzarella cheese over top and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
