As businesses expand and new businesses start-up, finding quality workers can be a challenge. Area business leaders recognized this challenge and have encouraged the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation (GFMEDC), the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce and our local educators to develop a game plan for building our future workforce.

This is my first editorial as your new CEO and I thought the subject of building community was a good start. In our area of the world we are blessed with great people, a strong business climate, some of the best farmland in the world and great educational opportunities for those that have a desire to learn. One of the challenges we are facing to build our community is finding skilled workers to fill the numerous open positions at businesses throughout our service area. This includes openings in health care, manufacturing, construction trades, retail, service, information technology and engineering. I am sure I missed some areas but I think you get the message: we need skilled workers in nearly all sectors of business.

To gather data on the workforce needs of our region, the GFMEDC, Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Cass-Clay, Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitors Bureau and the FM Area Foundation came together to spearhead the development of a regional workforce study and comprehensive strategy.

The goal of the study was to strengthen the regional workforce system to support regional employers and to address the gap between available positions and qualified workers. The strategic framework of the study is built around four main objectives; cultivate, attract, build and innovate.

One of the programs identified in the study is called Community 101 for college students. This program informs college students to start www.kwh.com

considering more relevant majors for the well paid jobs that are and will be available in this region. Additionally, the GFMEDC is a leading member of the North Dakota STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Network and the Education that Works initiative, which you will read about later in this issue.

As a community our goals are to: • Expand and enhance projectbased learning education to more closely align education and industry • Increase student and parent awareness of the importance of project-based learning and the four C’s (communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity) • Develop funding sources for education initiatives • Play a proactive role in engaging education policy-makers in North Dakota and Minnesota I represent Cass County Electric Cooperative on the board of the GFMEDC and provide our support toward their efforts to transform our region’s workforce to match up with the jobs of tomorrow. Employees at Cass County Electric play an active role in the community by presenting information about careers in the

electric industry to students during career days at schools and at the Health Tech and Trades expo for ninth graders at the Fargo Dome, and we welcome student groups on tours of our facility to learn from our experts. We send two students on the annual Youth Tour, an educational trip to Washington, D.C. to learn about government and electric cooperative history.

To support our students financially, Cass County Electric Cooperative also donates $13,000 a year to Dollars for Scholars for scholarships to students throughout our service territory.

teaching for tomorrow Education that Works prepares a 21 st century workforce

Think back to your time in school for a minute. Do you recall ever thinking to yourself (or perhaps loudly asking the teacher) “when are we ever going to use this?” No matter the subject in question or whether or not you actually have ended up using that particular knowledge in your adult life, you may have been on to an issue that is gaining quite a bit of attention in today’s schools.

A new style of thinking has begun to emerge amongst educators—one that involves realistically comparing how and what students are being taught to the skills that will someday be required of them in the workplace. What is becoming clear is that change is necessary.

Instead, there has been a growing effort in local K-12 schools to find ways to better engage students with their education. Much of that effort revolves around the idea of instilling students with 21st century skills—a skillset highlighted by “the four Cs”: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. These are the skills necessary for success in the workplace, no matter the occupation.

Typical of the Fargo/Moorhead region, several different groups have come together to re-evaluate local education for the future. The Greater Fargo-Moorhead Economic Development Corporation (GFMEDC), United Way of Cass-Clay, and the school districts of Fargo, West Fargo, and Moorhead have joined forces for the Education that Works initiative, a regional campaign to better educate both students and teachers. It is being done with the common understanding that today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce, and workforce has certainly been a regional buzzword.

In a 2015 regional workforce study, there were estimated to be over 6,700 job openings in the Fargo-Moorhead region and 11,000 openings in an 11-county area around the region, known as the laborshed. Those numbers are expected to grow to 30,000 and 50,000 respectively over the next five years.

“The workforce challenge is a big puzzle, but [Education that Works] is a piece of that puzzle,” says Lisa GullandNelson, vice president of marketing and public relations, GFMEDC. Indeed, the challenge of matching skilled candidates with open positions is not one unfamiliar to Cass County Electric Cooperative. Within the next five years, roughly one-third of CCEC’s employees will be eligible for retirement, meaning hundreds of combined years of experience will be leaving for good. That experience, covering dozens of different areas of expertise, will need to be replaced effectively to maintain quality service.

It’s no secret that CCEC and industries throughout the region have a keen interest in the education of local students and the work being done by GFMEDC. For these reasons, it is encouraging to see the principles behind Education that Works being implemented in local schools. Dr. Kovash says the four Cs are beginning to work their way into the curriculum in Moorhead’s

schools. Large group learning spaces are already being planned in new schools and will serve as more engaging, hands-on learning environments for students. The ability to engage students through creativity and active learning is a valuable asset for prospective new teachers to have, and to some degree, that’s where higher education plays a role.

“About 40% of our graduates stay in the area. Our goal is to increase that percentage.”

The prices of Prairie Sun Community Solar have been lowered significantly.

CCEC received grant funds from the North Dakota State Energy Program and the U.S. Department of Energy resulting in a 58 percent reduction in the cost to purchase solar credits.

How much does it cost to participate?

CCEC members can purchase the output of a half panel for $350 up front or the output of a full panel for $700 up front.

24 month payment plans are available for both half and full panel purchases. Residential members may purchase output of up to two panels, subject to limitations.

How much credit will I receive?

The rated power output per solar panel(s) allotted to each member is divided by the rated output for the entire array.

This is then multiplied by the array’s total power production each month, resulting in each member’s monthly kWh credit. One full panel is projected to provide a credit of 10 - 45 kWh per month, meaning your credit will likely vary from month to month because of weather and time of year. Based on today’s electric rate, the average solar credit from one panel will come to around $35 per year. Credits will be calculated based on the current rate, so if rates increase, your solar credit will too.

WHAT DO AMI AND TWACS MEAN? Over the years, the number of members served by Cass County Electric Cooperative has increased significantly. The number of employees serving those members has remained fairly steady. Solid training and years of experience have contributed to our increase in efficiency, but new technology has played a significant role as well.

CCEC recently completed a fouryear-long campaign to convert our entire system to advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), including swapping out existing older meters to new meters that utilize a two-way automated communications system (TWACS).

TWACS provides a bidirectional system for collecting, communicating, and analyzing information about and managing electricity use. Data is transmitted in both directions using existing power line infrastructure.

CCEC’s conversion process kicked off in 2012. Over the last 42

months, 25,949 older meters have been converted to TWACS. While some of these high-tech meters were online before the conversion process began, tens of thousands more have been addded in that time too. Today CCEC’s system features over 54,000 TWACS meters! AMI and TWACS have already proven beneficial to many different departments at CCEC. Our engineering team is able to keep tabs on the entire system in near-real time. This makes troubleshooting problems and maintaining power quality easier and more efficient.

The technology can even improve safety. There are instances where members create homemade renewable energy systems and connect them to CCEC’s distribution systems. These unapproved installations are incredibly dangerous not only to those using them, but also to CCEC linemen and technicians. Thanks to TWACS, the reverse power flowing through these meters can be

detected and the problem can be handled before someone gets hurt.

For CCEC’s member accounts team, TWACS provides more reliable readings without meter readers having to physically visit thousands of homes each month, more consistent billings, and a simpler transfer process for members leaving or joining our system.

With more accurate meter information, our member accounts and energy management teams are able to have more informed conversations with members regarding high bills. The information provided by TWACS is presented to members through the SmartHub desktop and mobile app. Here, energy use data is presented in charts for comparison over varying periods of time so members can see for themselves how much energy they are using.

New benefits of AMI are discovered often, and it has already been a worthwhile investment for CCEC. Though our membership continues to grow and our employeebase remains steady, our reliability and quality of service have continued to be top-notch. It is our goal to keep that trend going, thanks to training, experience, and the ever-growing capabilities of new technologies.

Hot Dill Potato Salad

Barbara Berentson, Fargo

Ingredients:

4 C cooked diced potatoes 1 Tbsp. butter 1 Tbsp. flour 1 tsp. salt ¼ tsp. black pepper ¼ tsp. dill weed 2 Tbsp. onion 1 C milk ½ C mayo

Preparation:

In a sauce pan, melt butter over low heat.

Stir in flour, pepper, salt and dill weed. Add milk, cook and stir until thickened and bubbly.

Blend in mayo and onion.

Fold in potatoes. Spoon into serving dish. Serve immediately. Serves 4-6

Homemade Beef Lunch Meat Lisa May, Fargo

Ingredients:

2 lb. lean ground beef ½ tsp. pepper ¼ tsp. onion salt ¼ tsp. garlic powder ½ tsp. allspice ½ tsp. basil 1 Tbsp. liquid smoke 1 Tbsp. mustard seed 3 Tbsp. Morton’s Tender Quick Salt ¾ C water

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients and form into 2 rolls (logs). Wrap each roll in foil and seal securely. Refrigerate 24 hrs. Bake in 350° oven for 1 hour. Open end of each roll, drain off fat and water. Cool. Rewrap in clean foil and refrigerate.

Slice and enjoy. This also freezes well.

Lemonade Pie

Ingredients:

Large graham cracker crust 6 oz. frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed 1 container Cool Whip 14 oz. sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated)

Preparation:

Mix the three ingredients together, an egg whip works wonders. Pour into crust. Freeze then serve the next day or after it has chilled well. You may use a different type of prepared pie crust if you want. Easy and it is delicious.
