CCEC saw a 4.1 percent increase in kilowatt-hour sales in 2017, surpassing our previous annual sales record set in 2014. This growth in sales helped to generate record revenues of $128,710,000, an increase of 6.2 percent over 2016.

Despite a 2017 rate increase from our power supplier, Minnkota Power, flat rates are forecasted for the foreseeable future. Combined with our continued growth in member accounts and sales, this should help to keep your electric rates fairly stable for many years to come.

Acknowledging these strong margins, I am pleased to report that at our January board meeting, your board of directors approved a comprehensive capital credit retirement (made up of estate payments, small retirements and a general retirement) of approximately $1.6 million. The general retirement portion of this will pay off the remaining capital credits allocated in 1993 and all of 1994.

The benefits of a very strong balance sheet, combined with continued lean operating and fixed costs has allowed us to absorb over $30.3 million in wholesale power cost since 2011.

This means that because of the strength of your cooperative, we have been able to avoid passing wholesale power cost increases down to members. In addition, we forecast that we will be able to continue to absorb approximately $18.8 million of wholesale power costs over the next four years, helping to keep your electric bills stable and as low as possible.

In summary, 2017 was yet another very successful year for your cooperative! With records in kilowatthour sales, revenues, operating margins, interest income, and lease income, we continue to build upon our already solid financial foundation, and I am hopeful that 2018 will again produce a very successful year for CCEC and its members.

Recordbreaking reliability Safety is the top priority at Cass County Electric Cooperative. With a strong culture of safety behind everything we do, we make it our mission to provide dependable electric service for our members. And we’re proud to report that in 2017, we broke our previous record for keeping the lights on.

One way we measure reliability is by using an average service availability index (ASAI). This measurement is a ratio of the total hours that service was available to the total hours that service was expected—essentially the percent of time that power was on for all members during the year.

In 2017, our members had power for 99.9918 percent of the entire year—a new record.

Of course, power outages will never go away, and we will never expect that every member will have power 100 percent of the time. But as a part of our reliability efforts, we utilize powerful grid technology to keep outages to a minimum and to respond to them quickly and get power back on as soon as possible when they do occur.

Nearly half of all power outages in 2017 were planned—that’s good!

That means we were making repairs or replacing aging equipment to reduce the chances of larger unplanned outages.

In many newer developments, power lines are buried underground, providing shelter from the worst of North Dakota’s elements, like freezing rain and strong winds.

Buried lines have the added benefit of not contributing to overhead clutter, but they aren’t impervious to damage and wear.

the issue is much harder than with overhead line. But thanks to a welldesigned electric grid, power can often be restored by rerouting it from alternate lines, drastically reducing outage times for many members.

Then, with the power back on to the vast majority of affected accounts, crews can unearth a damaged line and make repairs.

We take pride in our ability to respond to outages promptly, but our ability to prevent them from happening in the first place is another aspect that has greatly benefited from high-tech tools.

With electric meters and other equipment enhanced with two-way automated communication systems (TWACS) and supervisory control and data acquisition software (SCADA), our technicians and engineers are able to keep an eye out for odd occurrences across the entire system, all right from the office. If something odd does occur, such as fluctuations in voltage, our experts are tipped off to impending trouble and can begin investigating to prevent a potential outage.

CCEC’s maintenance program is a never-ending effort. With continual investments of time and resources into the latest tools and best equipment, we’ll continue to work toward providing our members the safe and reliable service that they expect from us.

Minnkota Power’s $30 million three-phase transmission network upgrade project increases reliability and meets the growing demand for power in the south and west metro regions.

CCEC recently added an unmanned aerial vehicle to its arsenal of tools.

This nimble vehicle helps increase the efficiency of equipment inspections, saving time and money.

SCADA & Relay Technician Tony Tasa receives a wealth of information about CCEC’s system that can help to reduce power outages.

The addition of the Veterans substation in West Fargo was a significant step toward continuing to meet the power needs of the region for years to come.

Electric storage water heaters Next to heating and cooling, electric water heating is one of the largest energy users in homes today. If you are looking to save some cash on your water heating expenses, Cass County Electric may be able to help.

Many electric water heaters are eligible for our off-peak program, which offers participants a reduced rate in exchange for the ability to interrupt a specific electric load during times of high energy demand. There are off-peak options for water heaters both greater and less than 100 gallons.

Water heaters on off-peak cannot be used with circulating pumps, unless the pump is tied to the ripple control.

Large capacity water heaters (100+ gallons) which are the ones that qualify for our long-term control option and are listed on page 7, are now required to be outfitted with grid-enabled technology. Gridenabled water heaters will only properly function when set up for a utility load management program.

We encourage you to call our energy management team for more information about grid-enabled water heaters and our off-peak program.

New water heaters like the ones listed to the right will be eligible for up to a $350 account credit when installed on off-peak long-term control. Credits and program participation will be acknowledged after a verification visit from a CCEC technician.

Cass County Electric does not sell water heaters. We encourage you to contact your local plumber about installation and warranty options.

director candidates Members of the CCEC board of directors are elected by ballot to three-year terms at the cooperative’s annual meeting every spring. Directors must be members of the cooperative and be a bona fide resident of the director district in which they are seeking directorship. That means you, as a member, can have a say in CCEC operations by voting for your directors. Democratic member control is one of the principles that sets cooperatives apart from other types of businesses.

I have decided to submit my name as a candidate for the Cass County Electric Cooperative Board for another threeyear term. There are some critical issues in the near future that could have several major impacts on our cooperative and the prices we pay for power. During these discussions, it is important to have a group that has had some experience and knowledge of how the system works and its effect on the members. My past experience on the board coupled with my background in farming, sales, and degrees in electrical engineering and systems will help keep our cooperative effective in meeting the membership needs of electrical power at an affordable price.

The experience of being on the board of the fastest growing rural electric utility in North Dakota along with learning how the industry operates and survives has been most interesting. Your electric meter can do a lot these days. Of course, its primary purpose is to measure your energy use, but today’s meter technology allows for unprecedented accuracy, operational savings, and even communication to help troubleshoot power issues and restore power during outages.

With all that electric meters do today, tampering with one is just as illegal and dangerous as it always has been. A shock from the electricity at a residential meter could prove incredibly harmful, even fatal. And tampering with a meter to steal electricity means higher rates for everyone else. If you know or suspect that someone has tampered with their meter, please contact our offices immediately at 701.356.4400.

Add soup, water, corn and pepper. Add noodles and simmer until noodles are done, about 15 minutes. Place in large greased casserole, then stir in the sour cream. Bake at 350° for 45-60 minutes until heated through.

Stir in yogurt with a wire whisk. Fold in whipped topping with a wooden spoon, then spread on crust.

SMART HOME ENTRY 3: NYCE WIRELESS MOTION SENSOR In February, we added our first accessory—a smart plug-in outlet— to our SmartThings smart home system. Controlling the power from a mobile device and setting up schedules makes the smart outlet neat in its own right, but as more items are added to the system, the true variety of capabilities really begins to unfold.

Joining our smart home this month is a NYCE wireless motion sensor.

This small device is equipped with a ZigBee radio and touts a 90-degree detection radius effective past 16

feet. Just like the smart outlet, when paired up with the SmartThings app, the motion sensor has a fair amount of potential all on its own. By enabling a SmartApp add-on in SmartThings, you can elect to receive notifications each time the sensor detects motion, giving you a simple security system that takes minutes to set up.

The real fun begins after allowing your accessories to work together.

Since we only have two, our example is simple. With another SmartApp add-on in SmartThings, we linked our motion sensor with our smart outlet,

which had a lamp plugged into it.

Through SmartThings, we directed any motion detected by the sensor to trigger the outlet on. No more fumbling for the light switch in the basement at night!
