Do you ever wonder where the electricity comes from to power your life’s conveniences?

When your alarm wakes you in the morning and you flip on the light switch in your bathroom and take a warm shower, then dry off with a recently laundered bath towel, blowdry your hair, make a cup of coffee and pour some cold milk on your cereal, this is all possible because of locally produced electricity.

The cycle of power production and delivery begins with Minnkota Power Cooperative (Minnkota), based in Grand Forks, ND. Minnkota is a generation and transmission cooperative owned by CCEC and 10

Coal fired generation has been our primary source of power since the 1970s and early 80s. Your electricity produced from coal comes from the Milton R. Young 1 & 2 power plants near Center, ND. The coal Minnkota burns to produce steam and create power is lignite coal and is mined near the power plants resulting in a low cost and stable fuel source. Recently, coal has been given a black eye by the media, environmental groups and by our current administration. However, I am proud to say that over the past several years Minnkota Power has gone to great lengths to reduce emissions from our coal-fired power plants, and the results have been outstanding. Minnkota is currently in compliance with all federal ambient air quality standards. However, the emissions reductions have come at a significant cost, hundreds of millions of dollars, which has also resulted in our wholesale power cost more than doubling over the past 10 years.

In 2007 Minnkota began investing in renewable energy and by 2008 had committed to more than 357 megawatts (MW) of wind energy. Today about 30 percent of Minnkota's generation capacity comes from wind. In 2016, Minnkota contracted for another 100 MW of wind energy to be operational in 2017. This will increase Minnkota's wind generation capacity to 35 percent, one of the highest percentages of wind energy in the nation. Minnkota also supplies around nine percent of its renewable power from the Garrison hydropower dam north of Bismarck on Lake Sakakawea.

Once the power is produced, it is shipped in an instant over transmission lines to substations at the distribution cooperatives served

by Minnkota. This is when Cass County Electric becomes your power supplier. We take power from over 35 substations (owned by Minnkota) that supply electricity to all parts of our service territory, including our newest one located on Veterans Boulevard, south of 32nd Ave. in Fargo. Between the substation and your home or business, the electricity travels through overcurrent protection devices, voltage regulators, power lines, automated switches, more breakers and fuses

and finally to the transformer at your home or business and through the electric meter.

When you consider all the equipment, devices, people, planning, maintenance, system operators and readiness response used to keep your power on with limited interruption, it is actually quite amazing how reliable your power is. We take a lot of pride in our reliability, and we can attribute it to great planning, commitment from management and directors, skilled engineering, and necessary financial resources required to invest in equipment needed to keep the power on like you expect.

In the future we will be challenged with a new world of power supply.

Many renewable sources are still not financially competitive or as reliable as traditional energy sources. In order for renewable sources to play a more significant role in our power supply, low cost energy storage systems with long lives and utility scalability will need to be developed. Though this has not happened yet, I believe we will see some breakthroughs in energy storage technologies in the next 1015 years.

Cass County Electric and Minnkota will continue to invest in your power supply to ensure you have reliable power at an affordable price with environmental stewardship as a priority. The next time you reach into the fridge for a cold beverage, thank the team of dedicated employees from CCEC for keeping the power on.

An Order of Healthy To Go West Fargo couple shares passion for healthy living Seth Houkom creates the recipes for all meals made at Power Plate Meals and is in the kitchen each day to help with preparation.

The idea behind Power Plate Meals, Seth Houkom’s and Haylee Swanson’s current business, did not come to them immediately, but once it did, it seemed almost obvious. Swanson, a NICU nurse, and Houkom, a farmer and owner of a construction company, met a few years ago and quickly realized they had a couple things in common: a passion for fitness and a strong sense of entrepreneurship.

“We always wanted to do something together,” says Swanson.

Together they started a fitness apparel line, building a large social media following and shipping product nationally and even internationally. However, their focus soon shifted when the pair decided to compete in bodybuilding competitions, a lingering aspiration from Houkom’s teenage years. In 2015, Houkom participated in four competitions, including one at the national level, and Swanson participated in three competitions. Requiring adherence to a dedicated lifestyle, bodybuilding brought the importance of food and nutrition to the couple’s attention.

“We just thought, especially after our competitions were done, that there’s nothing around town that you could run into and that’s healthy and on the go. It’s really hard to find that,” says Swanson.

The idea behind Power Plate Meals was formed, and today the concept isn’t much different: provide convenient, healthy meals to the general public.

Today, Power Plate Meals prepares and sells about 12 different pre-made meals out of its West Fargo storefront from a menu that changes every two weeks.

Each meal is conceived by Houkom, who says his inspiration simply comes from food that he likes.

“I just think of stuff that I want: meatballs, pizza, mac and cheese, and just make healthy alternatives,” Houkom says. “I’ll look at the ingredients list of something and . . . I know now in my head what healthy, clean ingredients I can substitute.”

From there, it’s a matter of tweaking the recipe to meet a specific calorie range and a proper breakdown of carbs, protein, and fat. Houkom goes so far as to include full nutrition labels with each meal so customers know exactly what they are eating.

So far, the biggest Power Plate Meals customers have been exactly who Houkom and Swanson wanted them to be: busy families. Though they didn’t expect it, Houkom and Swanson say their meals have been a hit with kids, too.

“A lot of people have said their kids like it, so that’s good, that makes us happy,” Swanson says.

“We’re excited about that because we are passionate about our food, and we want to share that. That’s why we did this,” Houkom adds.

Power Plate Meals has been in operation since January but encountered a major setback after just five weeks. After spending more than 24 straight hours preparing meals one day in February, the couple awoke from much needed rest to crushing news. Square One Kitchens, a rental kitchen space in Fargo used by Power Plate Meals and many other small businesses, had caught fire.

“We just couldn’t believe it,” says Houkom.

The disbelief didn’t last long, however.

Power Plate Meals offers 10 to 12 different pre-made meals, and the menu changes every two weeks. Meals can be picked out in-store, preordered online, or shipped to customers’ homes.

Within a day, Houkom and Swanson were on the hunt for a new location.

Meal preparation was put on hold as the new location in West Fargo’s Pioneer Center came together. The downtime was uncertain and frightening, but regular progress updates to the growing Power Plate Meals social media audience kept their customers eager— and apparently hungry.

When Power Plate Meals officially reopened in April at the West Fargo location, they sold completely out of food on the first day.

Houkom and Swanson refuse to take all the credit. In addition to three part-time employees, the couple says their two full-time employees—Houkom’s sister Sheena and Tucker Bucholz—have been crucial to their success.

“Those two are the reason why we’re still here and have been able to not have to turn people away yet. They’re literally amazing. They’ve been there for us for everything,” says Houkom.

Power Plate Meals also offers the services of two certified nutritionists and personal trainers. Customers can get help with meal planning and can add workouts into their plan. 30-day challenges, featuring customized meal plans, workouts, and weekly check-ins, are also offered for a one-stop fitness experience. Behind the hard work, long hours, and dedication, a common love of fitness continues to drive Houkom’s and Swanson’s success.

“We just want to share our passion with our community,” says Swanson.

Looking to the next generation

PRICE DROP! The prices of Prairie Sun Community Solar have been lowered significantly.

CCEC received grant funds from the North Dakota State Energy Program and the U.S. Department of Energy resulting in a 58 percent reduction in the cost to purchase solar credits.

How much does it cost to participate?

CCEC members can purchase the output of a half panel for $350 up front or the output of a full panel for $700 up front.

24 month payment plans are available for both half and full panel purchases. Residential members may purchase output of up to two panels, subject to limitations.

How much credit will I receive?

The rated power output per solar panel(s) allotted to each member is divided by the rated output for the entire array.

This is then multiplied by the array’s total power production each month, resulting in each member’s monthly kWh credit. One full panel is projected to provide a credit of 10 - 45 kWh per month, meaning your credit will likely vary from month to month because of weather and time of year. Based on today’s electric rate, the average solar credit from one panel will come to around $35 per year. Credits will be calculated based on the current rate, so if rates increase, your solar credit will too.

What's yours and what's ours?

Cass County Electric Cooperative takes pride in maintaining service reliability for our members. When there are power outages, our crews work to get the power on again as safely and quickly as possible.

However, we can only maintain the equipment that actually belongs to us. A general rule of thumb is that everything before the meter is owned by the co-op and everything after the meter is yours. The following graphics show the most common examples of where the actual “service point” is between our equipment and yours.

If your meter is on a pole: Cass County Electric Cooperative owns the pole, the connection atop the pole, ground rod, ground wire, meter loop, meter base, and meter. The member owns the service wire running from the pole to the house and the breakers.

If your meter is attached to your home with overhead lines: Cass County Electric Cooperative owns the overhead lines connecting to the top of the mast. The member owns the mast, service wires, ground wire, ground rod, and meter base.

If your meter is attached to your home with underground lines: Cass County Electric Cooperative owns the underground line and the pad-mounted transformer that feeds service to your home. The member owns the meter base. If the transformer is in your yard, keep in mind that we may need to access it for repairs at any time. We strongly encourage you to avoid planting or landscaping around transformers unless you use tall grasses that can bend and restore easily.

Anything within three feet of the transformer’s back and sides and within 10 feet of the front may be damaged during repairs.

Use bathroom fans to remove excess humidity and heat during showers.

Avoid setting the thermostat colder than normal when starting up your AC. It won’t cool your home any faster and can result in excessive cooling.

Keep your home warmer when you are away; cool it down when you return. It’s a myth that your AC uses more energy to lower the temperature than it does to maintain it.

Avoid placing lamps and appliances near your AC thermostat. The thermostat may be able to sense the heat from these items, which may result in your AC running longer than desired.

tech INSTANT INFRARED – FLIR ONE

The list of tasks that you can accomplish with a smartphone grows longer every day. While many of them are purely for entertainment purposes, there are actually many apps and attachments that are helping people and businesses work more effectively. One such attachment has recently been added to the arsenal of tools used by Cass County Electric Cooperative employees in the field.

FLIR, a company known for its thermal imaging technologies, offers the FLIR ONE, which is (you guessed it) a thermal imaging attachment for Android and iPhone.

The potential uses for such a device spread across a wide variety of industries, but CCEC’s energy management specialists have found them handy to have.

Not only can the FLIR ONE be used to find improperly sealed areas in a home or business where air

may seep in from the outside, but the attachment can also help locate areas where equipment is malfunctioning. Excess heat is generally a prime indicator of failing electrical equipment. The FLIR ONE app allows a user to compare the regular image with the thermal image, showing how serious issues may actually look fine to the naked eye.

It isn’t just energy specialists that can use FLIR ONE. The attachment is available to the general public and retails for $250. CCEC’s energy management team has even received a call from a member who located a problem with his off-peak equipment on his own by using a FLIR ONE attachment.

Preparation:

Brown hamburger. Put beans, ketchup, mustard and sugar in a bowl. Mix well.

Put mixture in 9 x 13 pan. Top with cheese. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.

Raw potatoes 20 minutes longer.

Put half of the Oreo crumbs on the bottom of 9x13 pan. Whip cream, mix in mints and marshmallows.

Spread on crust. Sprinkle rest of crumbs on top.

Refrigerate at least 4 hours before serving.

3 – 4 lbs. cut up ribs ¼ C vinegar ½ C water 2 Tbsps. brown sugar 2 Tbsps. mustard ½ tsp pepper 2 tsp chili powder 1 tsp salt

1 chopped onion ½ C ketchup 2 Tbsps. Worcestershire 1 ½ tsp liquid smoke 1 can tomato soup

Preparation:

Place ribs meat side up in shallow pan. Roast @ 450° for 30 minutes. Pour off grease.

Combine all ingredients in pan and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour over ribs and bake, baste several times. Bake for 1 ½ hours at 350° or until tender.
