On the first day in May, we welcomed more than 500 guests into the Holiday Inn in Fargo for the 80th annual meeting of Cass County Electric Cooperative. As usual, the meeting went off without a hitch.

The script was well-organized and planned out, the speakers were entertaining and informative, and three of our board members were re-elected to their positions—things generally worked like a well-oiled machine for the 80th time in your coop’s history.

The meeting got me thinking about the co-op in general. Our meeting theme this year was “committed to serve,” and that’s a theme that has rung true from the cooperative’s very beginning, when farmers banded together to bring electrical service to rural areas. Today, your co-op is in great standing financially and operationally, and from my perspective as president and CEO, it’s no mystery why.

That same commitment to serve that fueled the founding of the co-op in the 1930s still runs at the heart of the business today. Our employees are highly skilled and motivated to provide the best possible service to you, our members, that we can.

Our goal is always to provide safe, reliable, and affordable electric service to power your lives, and it takes a massive team effort to make that happen. There is equipment to be maintained or repaired, accounts to be managed, money to be handled wisely and effectively, messages to be communicated, data to be protected, systems to be engineered and constructed, and so much more. I’m proud to oversee a team that functions like that welloiled machine I mentioned earlier, all working for you.

We debuted a video showcasing our employees at work during the annual meeting, and it’s since been posted to our Facebook page. If you have a couple minutes, I encourage you to check it out and see some of the folks committed to your electric service.

It’s not always going to be good news. The power will go out, and there will be obstacles to overcome—that’s just a part of the business and a part of life. But you can rest assured that your co-op is constantly preparing for whatever the future may bring.

Here’s to looking forward to annual meeting 81 and many more to come.

A Field Guide to Overhead Power Lines High-voltage transmission lines are used to deliver electricity from generation plants to consumers.

HIGH�VOLTAGE TRANS� MISSION LINES Large amounts of power, measured by watts, are delivered by transmission lines.

These lines are energized with very high voltage in order to move the power long distances with minimal losses. Insulators on the towers prevent the power from flowing to the towers or the ground.

Electric cooperatives own and maintain 65,000 miles (6 percent) of the nation’s transmission lines.

SUBSTATIONS AND SUB�TRANSMISSION LINES Transformers at transmission substations reduce the voltage from transmission levels to sub-transmission levels, typically ranging from 115,000 volts to 34,500 volts.

Sub-transmission lines deliver power over shorter distances to distribution substations and large industrial sites. At distribution substations and large industrial sites, transformers reduce the voltage to a lower level, typically 7,200 volts or 14,400 volts.

DISTRIBUTION LINES

The lines typically seen along rural roads and next to homes are generally single phase distribution lines, energized at 7,200 or 14,400 volts. Transformers on the utility poles lower the voltage to between 120 and 480 volts to serve residential homes and small businesses.

Electric cooperatives own and maintain 2.6 million miles (42 percent) of the nation’s distribution lines.

Avoid the Big Green Box

Please stay away from pad-mounted transformers (the big green box). While safe, they are not meant for touching, climbing or playing. Pad-mounted transformers carry high voltages of electricity that serve many homes in our communities.

Never touch, climb or play on pad-mounted transformers.

Never put fingers, sticks or other objects through cracks in the transformer.

Keep areas surrounding the padmounted transformer clear so that workers can safely maintain transformers as needed. Keep shrubs and structures at least 10 feet away from the transformer doors and 4 feet away from the sides.

Never dig near a pad-mounted transformer. They are surrounded by underground cables. Hitting the cable could result in electrical shock or disruption of service.

Report problems. If you notice anything amiss, like an unlocked transformer or one that has been damaged, please contact us immediately.

Recent updates to the SmartHub mobile app provide enhancements to give you even more control over your electric account right from your smartphone or tablet.

You can now report a power outage directly through the app and monitor your service status.

Choosing paperless billing is now even easier, with the option to discontinue your printed bill through the app’s settings menu.

Combined with the existing abilities to manage your autopay settings and view your energy usage in segments ranging from yearly

to daily, SmartHub is now more powerful than ever.

With access to energy use information, you can see how home energy use changes from bill to bill. SmartHub also displays the average temperature over the selected timeframe, showing how outside temperatures affect inside energy use.

Breaking energy statistics into hourly segments allows you to see how energy is used throughout the day, making it easier to learn how personal habits and behaviors impact monthly electric bills. For

Committed to Serve Cass County Electric Cooperative’s 80th annual meeting was held May 1, at the Holiday Inn in Fargo. The event was attended by 551 total guests including 340 registered members of CCEC. Notable guests included Commissioners Randy Christmann and Brian Kroshus of the North Dakota Public Service Commission, ND Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger, ND Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, representatives from the offices of Representative

Kevin Cramer and Senator John Hoeven, along with employees and directors from neighboring co-ops, and former employees and directors of CCEC.

Three current CCEC directors were up for re-election—Wendy Loucks, district 5; Sid Berg, district 3; and Doug Anderson, district 2. All three candidates ran unopposed and were re-elected to the board.

The meeting included the national anthem sung by CCEC member Divera Gentles, and presentations by 2017 Youth Tour participant Elisabeth Ehnert and Operation Round Up board member Patricia Mathern.

I can’t think of just one in particular. I love all types of music, both new and old.

I’m a huge foodie! I love all types of food, but if I had to choose I would probably pick Italian.

I love to travel and see new places, ride motorcycle with my husband, go to music concerts, hang out with friends, cook and bake, and I’m a wine enthusiast.

What’s your dream vacation destination?

France or Italy on a wine/food tour.

What’s your favorite season and why?

I love spring and fall equally. Not too hot or too cold. It’s the best motorcycle riding weather.

I would probably buy a lake home.

I think I would go back to the sixties or seventies—amazing music and everything seemed so carefree and laid back. I wouldn’t want to go back too far in time. I’d miss modern day conveniences like indoor plumbing and ELECTRICITY!

I got married to my husband Jerry last summer in Deadwood, SD. Jerry has a son, Tyler and a daughter, Maeghan.

I have a daughter, Paige. We live in West Fargo with our two cats Mitzi and Skeeter. We also own a rural property near Erhard, MN, where we like to stay when we need a break from the hustle and bustle of city living.

efficiency BEAT THE HEAT WITHOUT BREAKING YOUR WALLET Cass County Electric Cooperative encourages you to use electricity wisely. We are available to help you learn how to manage your usage to save energy and money.

As warmer weather sets in, home comfort switches from heating to cooling. But as temperatures rise and air conditioners are switched on, looking for ways to improve energy efficiency at home can help you and Cass County Electric Cooperative reduce demand and save energy and money.

Your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system or heat pump can play a huge part in controlling your energy use year-round, even if family comfort is a top priority.

At 78 degrees, most people are comfortable outside, so why not indoors? Most people aren’t sensitive enough to notice much of a difference in air temperature whether the thermostat is set at 73 or raised to 78. But the closer your air conditioner or heat pump setting is to the outdoor temperature, the less your unit will run.

Each degree of temperature difference represents a percentage of the total cooling load. That means that when temperatures are in the high 80s, you could reduce your cooling demand by 10 to 15 percent for each degree above 75 degrees that your thermostat is set to.

Fans offer an economical alternative to air conditioning on mild days and they can pitch in for comfort as temperatures climb. The key is evaporative cooling. At lower settings, a little air blowing across a room helps to bring down humidity levels and create a wind chill effect that will make you feel just a little cooler. Just remember to shut it off when you leave the room.

Cooking on an electric or gas range releases water vapor and heat into the air, both undesirable during summer’s heat.

Microwaves use about 60 percent as much energy as full-size ovens, and a toaster oven or induction cooker consumes about half as much power. Because they are generally designed to heat food more efficiently in less space, the surface areas available for heating are smaller, reducing waste heat and keeping kitchens cooler.

BEAT THE HEAT

You can beat the heat (and save money!) by decreasing your power use without sacrificing comfort during hot days. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Laundry for Less: Full loads mean fewer cycles, and washers and dryers run in the late evenings have a lesser impact on your cooling load than during the hottest part of the day.

Cool Off/Calm Down: Turn off unnecessary lighting and electronics that generate heat, resist the urge to turn down the thermostat and remember, lower fan settings use less energy.

Intramural Competition: Online gaming with each active player using their own computer, display, gaming console and internet connection gets pricey.

Play each other at home on one screen and save.

Countertop Convenience: Range or oven cooking can really warm up a kitchen. Microwaves, convection ovens, induction cooktops, Crock-Pot® and toaster ovens put more cooking heat where you need it.

WHICH OF THE SITUATIONS IN THE PICTURES BELOW APPEARS MORE DANGEROUS AT FIRST GLANCE? Picture A, courtesy of Dakota Valley Electric Cooperative, might seem like the obvious choice, but in reality, they’re both equally deadly. Picture B is certainly less dramatic than A—there weren’t any burn marks, smoke, or flames at the scene yet, but the lines lying on the ground in picture B still had electricity coursing through them at 7,200 volts. In fact, the ground itself could have possibly been energized near the pole. Before the linecrew arrived to cut the power, anyone who ventured too close could have very easily been killed.

lines can be knocked to the ground and remain live with little indication to CCEC’s power control technicians of anything being amiss. Will says he’s encountered such situations, where snow is serving as an insulator, allowing the line to remain hot on the ground.

Luckily, no one was hurt during the situations in either picture, but these experiences serve as a sobering reminder to always treat all power lines as if they are energized. Stay away from downed lines, keep others away, and contact the utility immediately. If a downed line crosses a road or high-traffic area, contact 911.

Baked Penne Pasta Ronald McDonald House

Ingredients:

2 T. olive oil 1 large onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 lb ground beef (or 1/2 ground beef half Italian sausage) 1 can (28 oz) whole tomatoes, w/ juice 2 cans (14.5 oz) tomato sauce or marinara sauce 2 t. Italian seasoning ½ t. red pepper flakes Salt & pepper to taste 16 oz whole wheat penne pasta 1 tub (15 oz) whole milk ricotta cheese 1-1/2 lb mozzarella cheese, grated ½ C grated Parmesan cheese 1 egg Preparation: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced onions & garlic & sauté for several minutes, or until starting to soften. Add ground beef & cook until browned.

Drain off fat, leaving a bit behind for flavor & moisture. Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, salt, & pepper.

Stir & simmer for 25 to 30 minutes.

After that, remove 3 to 4 cups of the sauce to a different bowl to cool down. Preheat oven to 375° F. Bring pasta to a boil. Make sure to undercook it a tad-especially if freezing! In a separate bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, 2 cups of the grated mozzarella, Parmesan, egg, & a dash of salt & pepper. Drain the pasta and rinse under cool water to stop the cooking. Pour it into the bowl with the cheese mixture and barely mix it together. Add the cooled meat sauce that you set aside earlier and toss to combine. Dump the pasta mixture into a large greased casserole dish or lasagna dish.

(I ended up using a 9x13 AND a 9x9 dish to fit all of it!) Spoon the remaining sauce over the top, then top with remaining mozzarella cheese. Bake for 20 minutes, or until bubbling. Remove from oven & let stand 5 minutes before serving.

Hint: Sprinkle chopped parsley over the pasta before serving!

Jalapeno Turkey Burgers Ronald McDonald House

Ingredients:

1 lb ground turkey 1/2-3/4 of one jalapeño pepper, minced 1 medium size shallot, peeled & minced Zest of 1 lime, & 2 t. lime juice 2 T. chopped cilantro 1 t. paprika 1 t. cumin 1/2 t. sea salt 1/2 t. black pepper Guacamole Pico de gallo Poached egg (optional) Preparation: Place turkey, herbs, spices & lime in bowl & use hands to mix well. Form into four patties. Place pan on medium heat. Add olive oil to bottom of pan. When pan is hot, place patties in pan & cook for about 5 minutes each side or until cooked through. Top with guacamole, pico de gallo & poached egg if desired!

Stuffed Chicken Parmesan Ronald McDonald House

Ingredients:

2 chicken breasts, boneless & skinless 1 C fresh mozzarella, sliced 1 C flour 4 eggs, beaten 1 C breadcrumbs 1 C oil, for frying 3 C tomato sauce 1/2 C Parmesan cheese, grated 2 T. dried basil Preparation: Cut a pocket into each breast and stuff evenly with mozzarella. Press the edges of the chicken together to seal. Season with salt. Put the flour, eggs, & breadcrumbs into 3 separate bowls. Being careful to keep the chicken from opening, dip the stuffed chicken in the flour, shaking off the excess. Dip the floured chicken into the egg, then the breadcrumbs, coating it evenly. Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Preheat oven to 350°F. Fry the chicken until golden brown on both sides. Place 1/3 of the tomato sauce evenly on the bottom of a baking dish, cover with chicken. Top with the rest of the sauce, sprinkle Parmesan & basil on top. Bake for 25 minutes.

tech SMART HOME ENTRY 5: RING VIDEO DOORBELL

This month’s addition to our collection of smart home products takes smart tech to your front step with the Ring video doorbell.

Ring’s most basic doorbell captures video in 720p and runs off an internal battery with option to hardwire it to an existing doorbell connection.

It includes motion detection, night vision, and two-way communication abilities for enhanced security at your front door, which you can manage through your mobile device.

Primarily, a Ring doorbell allows you to identify visitors prior to approaching the door. When a visitor presses the doorbell button, you can elect to receive a notification through the Ring app to initiate video capture and two-way communication. Additionally, the motion sensor capabilities can be used to initiate alerts any time motion is detected within the Ring’s range.

Through the SmartThings app, the motion detector and button on your Ring doorbell could be paired up with other SmartThings-enabled devices, allowing you to automatically switch

on a light when someone approaches your door, for example.

The Ring app keeps a log of all activity at your doorbell and stores the videos it captures. You can then view and download videos to your mobile device.

Through the Neighbors section of the Ring app, users can even share videos with other Ring users in the area, creating a local social network specific to home security.
