I’ve been involved with energy my whole career, and even before. I got my driver’s license in the early 1970s during the oil embargo, not very long after the very first Earth Day. The price of gasoline had a big impact on my ability to afford cruising around my home town (one stop light) in my 1946 Plymouth business coupe, which made it a very personal issue.

My parents heated their home with wood, which meant that my brother and I were intimately involved with the process of converting oak trees on our farm to Btus in our house. That interest carried through to my time at NDSU, where many of my classes involved energy use, efficiency and conservation.

My first job after college was with the North Dakota Cooperative Extension Service, working exclusively on energy issues. That experience led to Cass County Electric Cooperative in 1982 and an even sharper focus on energy.

Back in those days my colleagues and I did hundreds of “energy audits” to help members reduce their energy use and save money. We certainly didn’t invent the concept of efficient energy use though – electric cooperatives in general and Cass County Electric in particular have been champions of energy conservation and efficiency since day one (1937 in our case.)

We’ve learned a few things along the way. We learned there are two 2 Highline Notes January 2016

major influences on a person’s, or a household’s or a business’s energy use: the efficiency of the equipment and structure, and the behavior of the humans involved.

Efficiency is by far the easier part of the energy use equation.

An LED light bulb uses a fraction of the energy for the same amount of usable light compared to Thomas Edison’s workhorse that served us for over 100 years. A house built to modern standards is far easier to heat and cool than my parents’ formerly woodheated house in northern Minnesota.

Changing human behavior to influence energy use is much more difficult than replacing an old refrigerator with a new Energy Starrated model. We are creatures of habit and for most of us that change comes hard. We all like to think we make rational decisions about energy use, but do we really? Do we always turn off lights when we leave a room?

Do we always change our thermostat setting at night and when we leave home for the day?

I would submit to you that energy efficiency is sometimes the enemy of energy conservation behavior.

refrigeration and home comfort, we will generally find more ways to use the energy we’re saving. How many things do you have plugged in at your house now compared to ten years ago? (Hint: look around your house at night and count the number of green, red and blue lights glowing on all your electronic stuff.) Now that you own a car that gets great mileage, do you drive more than you used to with your old gas guzzler?

This notion is not new. A British economist named William Stanley Jevons wrote about it in 1865, and this concept has come to be known as the “Jevons paradox.” Efficiency can lead to more consumption, not less – unless there is a corresponding change in behavior. Still in doubt?

Let’s look at it from another angle. Did you lose weight when you switched to low-fat ice cream? No one I know did.

We simply ate more.

The point is this: energy efficiency is a very important component of saving money. But it’s equally if not more important to be mindful of how our behavior impacts our energy use as well. My parents figured this out about heating with wood. When my brother and I (read: free labor) moved away, they behaved in a rational way and installed off-peak electric heat.

Winter Energy Use

It’s no secret—as temperatures drop, heating bills rise. In this part of the country, it takes a lot of energy to survive, especially during the winter. When demand for energy rises, utilities like Cass County Electric use load control to help manage energy supply. Below are a few common issues with energy use and load control to keep in mind as the thermometer plummets:

Q: I don’t have primary electric heat, so why is my bill higher in the winter?

A: Even if you have a gas furnace, your furnace fan

motor will still impact your winter electric bills.

Primary heat makes up a big chunk of winter energy use, but many secondary heating sources are electric as well. Are you using a block heater for your vehicle?

A space heater in a particular room? Do you have garage or floor heating? Livestock water heaters?

You might have these items on in the winter even if you don’t have electric heat in your home.

In North Dakota it is dark for 14.5—15.5 hours each day during December and January. In addition to using energy to heat our homes, we also use energy to light our homes longer in the winter. Combine these factors with the extra company and activities of the holidays and the result will likely be a higher electric bill.

“They’re all pieces to the puzzle,” says Energy Management Coordinator, Shannon Stumpf. Learning how each piece adds to the overall picture can help you save on your monthly bills in the winter and yearround.

Q: Why did you switch me to off-peak when it’s not even below zero outside?

A: Load is controlled when there’s high demand for

electricity. There’s certainly higher demand when temperatures are extreme, but that isn’t the only factor.

If there’s low wind generation or a power plant is off-line for any reason, load control may be used to reduce the need to resort to the unstable prices of the energy market. In any event, load control is intended to maintain both reliable service and affordable prices for all members.

If you have dual-heat, make sure you always have an adequate supply of back-up fuel.

Q: My water heater is on off-peak, but why isn’t it working now?

A: Call us BEFORE calling your contractor! It’s

possible that your system is working just fine but is currently being controlled. Don’t get stuck with an unnecessary bill from a contractor.

Here are a few tips from Cass County Electric’s energy management team to keep your winter energy use in check: ○ Download the SmartHub mobile app.

With SmartHub, you can become your own energy detective. Compare energy use in segments ranging from hourly to yearly to see how changes in the weather and changes in your home impact your bill.

○ Lighting upgrade

Upgrading from older incandescent bulbs to LEDs should be considered an investment in energy savings for years to come. Like most investments, LED bulbs are more expensive up front but last longer and use a fraction of the energy that incandescent bulbs do.

Over time, the savings will add up during winter’s long lighting hours and year-round. Consider starting small by upgrading a few of your home’s most used lights to LEDs.

○ Control your heating

Heating is one of the largest consumers of energy in the home. Use a programmable thermostat to control how and when you heat your home. Some thermostats today are “smart” thermostats which may include advanced scheduling features and the ability to make adjustments from a mobile device.

If you have a heated garage or other outbuilding, consider the temperature you have them at and what you use them for. Not using the garage as a frequent workspace in the winter? Perhaps you can lower the temperature a few degrees and shave a bit off your heating bill.

○ Understand floor heating

Be mindful of your floor heat settings. In bathrooms or

kitchens perhaps you really only need to have it on for brief periods during the day. If it’s a part of your daily routine, look into using programmable controls for your floor heating as well.

○ Use “auto” instead of “on”

Even gas furnaces need some electricity. Your furnace fan will contribute somewhat to your winter energy use, but you can still manage it wisely. With most furnaces there is an auto setting in addition to on and off.

Using the auto setting will switch the fan off when the temperature reaches the desired level and start it back up if the temperature falls. When set to on, your fan will run constantly, even if you don’t necessarily need it to.

○ Replace furnace filter

Different filters last for different lengths of time, but it’s generally recommended you change it every few months. Read your owner’s manual to find out what is recommended. A clean filter will allow your heating system to operate more efficiently and maintain air quality in your home.

○ Education

Learning how items in your home use electricity will give you a better understanding of how your behaviors and habits affect your electric bill. Winter Energy Hogs Below are a few winter heating hogs and examples of how they can contribute to your monthly energy bills. Costs are estimates based on national average of $0.11/kWh and rounded to nearest whole dollar.

Block heater (500-1500W): Plugged in 12 hours overnight could contribute $20 for a small vehicle and $59 for a truck/ tractor to your monthly bill. Using a timer to warm just 2 hours before use would reduce the cost to $3 for small vehicle, $10 for truck/tractor.

Space heater (1500W):

Running for 2 – 8 hours per day, can contribute $10 – $40 to your monthly bill.

Floor heat (10W/ft2):

In a 100 ft2 room, running for 12 hours a day can contribute $40 to monthly bill.

Using a programmable thermostat and limiting to 2 hours per day can reduce the cost to $7 per month.

Garage heat (5-10kW):

Cost varies greatly depending on how well garage is sealed, insulation levels, number of exterior walls, frequency and duration of exterior door opening, and preferred temperature. Heating 24 hours per day can contribute up to $400 to a monthly bill.

Furnace fan (500W):

Using the always-running “on” setting can contribute $40 to monthly bill. Using the “auto” setting (assuming 50% run time) can cut the cost in half.

OPERATION ROUND UP

People doing together what can’t be done individually.

In 2015, the Kindred Volunteer Fire Department received a donation from Cass County Electric’s Operation Round Up program to purchase a thermal imaging camera. The camera identifies heat signatures, allowing the user to see the outline of a person or animal in need of rescue in a smoke-filled room. That image is also transmitted wirelessly back to a computer in the fire truck.

“You can see everything. If there happened to be someone who was disoriented and crawling across the floor, you can actually see their handprints and footprints,” said Rich Schock, assistant fire chief.

Fire Chief Virgil Muscha said purchasing the camera likely wouldn’t have been possible without the $9,000 of Operation Round Up funding, which covered the majority of the system’s cost.

“We have limited funds here, so anything beyond our normal operating expenses needs to come from fundraisers or grants,” Muscha said. “If this camera can help us save one life, it more than pays for itself.”

Pepperoni - large circles/sliced Cream cheese Pepperoncini (deseeded & cut into strips) Toothpicks

Preparation:

Spread thin layer of cream cheese on pepperoni, top with pepperoncini, fold and pierce with toothpick. Keep refrigerated until serving.

Party Cheese Ball

Ingredients:

2 - 8oz. pkg. cream cheese (reg., lite, or fat free) 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese (mild, sharp, or combination) 2 - 4 ½ oz. cans deviled ham 2 Oz. chopped dried beef 3 Tbsps. chopped onion 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp. Lemon juice 1 tsp. Dry ranch dressing Chopped walnuts

Preparation:

Mix everything together. Form into balls. Roll in chopped walnuts. Refrigerate or freeze. Have cream cheese at room temperature. I have stand mixer so I just put all the ingredients together and let it mix. It also works to mix with your hands. Messy, but it works. If you chill the mixture it’s easier to form the balls. If you don’t have time to chill, wet your hands so it’s easier to handle. You could also roll the balls in pecans, sunflower seeds or parsley.

I tried to be specific, but when push comes to shove, just put in what you have in the cupboard. A little more or less isn’t going to hurt anything. Good luck and enjoy!!!

Ingredients:

2 cans (16 oz.) chopped (flaked) crab – well drained ¼ Cup chopped green onion or scallions 1 tsp lemon juice ½ tsp curry powder 1-4 (oz.) pkg grated Swiss cheese ½ cup mayo 1 pkg Pillsbury Grand butter flake biscuits Paprika

Preparation:

Separate biscuits in two layers and cut in half. Mix other ingredients together. Put 1 Tbsp mixture on each biscuit & spread. Bake at 375° on insulated pan 10-20 minutes until brown. Sprinkle with paprika.

Preparation:

Brown sausage, add cream cheese, tomatoes, stir until melted. Season to taste.

Serve with tortilla corn chip scoops at any event.
