SAFETY TIPS

While we depend on it every day, electricity - when used improperly or when used with damaged or poorly installed equipment - can pose a serious danger. Take precautions to make sure you use electricity safely.

If you notice any items on the list below, contact a professional electrician ASAP:

Frequent power outages or tripped breakers that are not related to utility issues.

Consistently dim or flickering lights, arching, sparking, or shocks from outlets or switches.

Odd noises (snapping or crackling) or noticeable heat from outlets or switches.

Replace any broken electrical outlets or switch covers.

Be mindful of overhead power lines when using ladders.

When using corded equipment, inspect the cord prior to use for damage and don’t drag the cord through standing water. Do not use the cord if it is damaged.

Before doing any digging, be sure to call 8-1-1 or visit NDonecall.com to get underground utilities marked.

If you have a transformer in your yard, always remember to leave 10 feet in front of it and three feet on the sides and back when planting or landscaping. This will allow proper air flow to the transformer and give utility workers space to work on it if it needs repairs.

Remember these other tips to stay safe around electricity:

Use the test buttons on outlets with arc fault circuit indicators (AFCI) and ground fault circuit indicators (GFCI) to make sure they are functioning properly.

Ensure your power outlets are tamperresistant. These outlets only allow something to be plugged in if it enters both prongs simultaneously.

Use safety caps with unused outlets.

Don’t leave space heaters running unattended, and make sure to only use space heaters that automatically shut off if tipped over.

Contact a professional electrician when installing a portable generator. Improper installation of a generator can result in a reverse flow of electricity, causing potential danger for those in the home and utility workers.

Do not overload electrical outlets, even when using power strips. Be sure the circuit can handle the load of many items.

Never clip the ground prong from a plug to make it fit into an older outlet, and never use a plug that has been clipped.

Always inspect cords on appliances and extension cords for damage. Cracked or frayed cords should not be used.

Be sure extension cords are probably rated for the task.

Do not run extension cords under rugs or carpeting.

At the first signs of an approaching thunderstorm, it’s time to head inside!

Lightning can be deadly, and there is no place outside that is fully safe from it during a storm.
