December 2018 Board Highlights (Unapproved)

The Cass County Electric Board of Directors met on December 19, 2018 and discussed the following topics: • Approved the December 2018 consent agenda of the regular board meeting consisting of: minutes of the previous meeting, monthly department reports, board compensation schedule, and the November Purchased Power Adjustment (PPA).

• President/CEO Marshal Albright gave the President’s Report, reporting on meetings attended, North Dakota Workforce Council, and the status of Union negotiations.

• Approved the November financial report. The board also approved management staff’s recommendation to limit 2018 excess margins by lowering the electricity rate for December by $500,000 and paying an additional $282,000 in capital credits to the members in 2019.

• After reviewing each department’s budget and discussing key priorities with staff, the board approved the 2019-2020 budget.

• Approved revisions to several policies.

• The directors reported on the meetings of Square Butte Electric Cooperative and North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives.

• Approved the December 2018 estate capital credit payments.

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 29, 2019.

Curling is an Amazingly Social Sport

A curling team consists of Skip: Team captain and in charge of strategy

Curling began in 16th Century Scotland on frozen lochs and ponds.

When the term “curling” is thrown into a conversation, you might be reminded of the Winter Olympics or a bunch of adults sliding large granite rocks down a pebbled ice slab. Curling is that and more. It’s an excellent way for your family to make some memories that will last a lifetime.

During the frigid winter months in Fargo, ND, the FM Curling Club is open for use. It’s a hot destination for families across the region. Whether you are a regular or new to the sport, there is a place for everyone at the FM Curling Club. Winter is more than the whirling wind outside, so let’s look at what the FM Curling Club can offer you and your family.

Curling can be an intimidating sport, but the FM Curling Club offers a variety of different programs to people of all ages. For kids, they have the Kids Curl Program, and for adults, there are a variety of bonspiels.

In the Kids Curl Program, they are introduced to the basics of curling.

Kids this age usually don’t have enough strength to slide the rock all the way to the other side, so they get to play on a short track while meeting new friends and having fun.

Curling is also known as “the roaring game” which refers to the sound the rock makes traveling over the ice.

Volunteer Youth Curling Director, Theresa Klingbile, moved to Fargo two and a half years ago and jumped right into helping with the youth league. Since that time the number of kids participating in the programs has dramatically increased. “The Olympics had a big boost and kids see it. Now with curling becoming more popular in Fargo non-curling families are realizing we have the facility here, and they want their kids involved in a new sport,” says Klingbile. The Youth Curling Program has maxed out its capacity at 106 kids. Way up from the 80 kids from last season. Klingbile says she is seeing parents signing up their 6-year-old kids then see it’s a sport for the entire family. “It’s exciting seeing a whole family out there curling,” says Klingbile.

Families in our area aren’t the only ones joining curling and trying to master the craft. Former NFL Vikings player, Jared Allen, and three other NFL stars are throwing their competitiveness into a lofty goal – the goal to qualify for the 2022 Winter Olympics as curlers. Klingbile says this could have an impact on the sport, especially Vikings fans. “If they

have the opportunity to watch him (Allen) curl and realize they enjoy the sport, then they’ll come back here to learn more about curling.” Klingbile is excited and says she is very proud of the facility they have in Fargo. “We are getting a brand-new sport into a lot of these kids that don’t have the opportunity to have a winter sport.

It’s a life-long sport that we are introducing to six-year old’s that have the chance to curl until they’re 80.”

says Rokke. The curling club is a great way to get out and meet people in the community. “It’s so easy to make friends in curling,” says Klingbile. If someone wants to join call the club and staff will get you into the right league or class. Don’t forget to bring a smile and some warm clothes. “Our door is always open,” says Klingbile with a smile.

If participating in a curling game doesn’t appeal to you there are other ways to get involved with the club.

You could bartend upstairs during bonspiels or other events, hand out shoes, or be a coordinator out on the ice. Visit their website fmcurling.org or give them a call at 701-232-3041 to get involved.

One of the common questions curlers get asked is, “Why do you like curling so much?” Odds are their answer will be similar to Youth Curler, Porter Rokke who says, “I like that it’s more of a friendly sport, and you can hang out with friends even if you’re on opposite sides.” Curling is not a rough sport like football where you get slammed into the turf; it’s a positive environment.

Each curling stone has a circumference of 36 inches, height of 4.5 inches and weighs around 40 pounds.

Men’s curling debuted in 1924 during the Winter Olympics program in Chamonix, France 74 years before it became an official sport in 1998.

Ready for Research State of North Dakota approves up to $15 million for Project Tundra

Research on what would be the world’s largest carbon capture facility received invaluable support from the state of North Dakota in November. The North Dakota Industrial Commission unanimously approved up to $15 million in state funding for Project Tundra, which aims to connect the state’s coal and oil industries to produce more energy, reduce emissions and generate longterm economic benefits.

Funding for the project, led by Minnkota Power Cooperative, would help pay for the engineering and design study for a CO2 capture system at the Milton R. Young Station located near Center, N.D. The funding is contingent on the project receiving an additional $15 million from the U.S. Department of Energy.

“The state of North Dakota has long been a leader in energy innovation thanks to strong support from its elected officials and the pioneering spirit of its companies,” said Mac McLennan, Minnkota president & CEO. “This research funding is

essential to understanding how this breakthrough technology can be applied to North Dakota facilities.”

The project would capture CO2 inside a large vessel using a solvent called amine. Once enough CO2 has bonded with the amine, it would be pumped to a separate vessel where heat is applied to break the bond and create a pure CO2 stream. The CO2 is then delivered through a pipeline to area oil fields where it can be used for enhanced oil recovery. This process includes injecting CO2 into conventional wells to substantially increase oil production.

The project, estimated to cost $1.3 billion, is not something Minnkota will take on alone. Other entities involved in Project Tundra include BNI Energy, Bismarck, N.D.; Eagle Energy Partners, Minot, N.D.; and the Energy and Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, N.D. Despite the initial capital cost, demand for carbon capture

technology has been made even greater by the passage of 45Q tax credit reform. As part of legislation passed in February, the federal tax credits have been increased to $35 per ton for CO2 that is captured and used for enhanced oil recovery and $50 per ton that is captured and stored in a geologic formation deep underground. These tax credits are projected to represent up to $1 billion in value to Project Tundra.

Proven technology As Project Tundra transitions into the next phase of research, it has hired one of the world’s foremost experts in CO2 technology and development. David Greeson joined the project team in October after previously serving as the vice president of development at Texasbased NRG Energy. In that role, he led the development of the Petra Nova initiative, which is the world’s largest post-combustion CO2 capture and enhanced oil recovery project. Petra Nova was completed on schedule and on budget in December 2016.

Project Tundra is modeled after the Petra Nova initiative, which is capturing about 90 percent of the CO2 emitted from a 240-megawatt (MW) flue gas slipstream. The captured CO2 is then injected into mature reservoirs to release more oil. This process revitalized a diminishing oil field, increasing production by 1,300 percent.

Project Tundra aims to build on the success of Petra Nova by

applying a similar, but much larger, set of technologies to Unit 2 of the Young Station. Unit 2 is a 455MW generation facility that began commercial operation in 1977.

The facility has previously been retrofitted with emissions control equipment that meets or exceeds all current air quality standards.

I love music; it’s hard for me to pick just one song. If we were going to get a dance party started at home in the kitchen – it might be Simple by Florida Georgia Line or Geronimo by Sheppard. But then if I want to get pumped up for a game of basketball, it might be Thunderstruck by AC/ DC, or I’m Shipping up to Boston by Dropkick Murphys.

What’s your favorite food?

I am a huge fan of food! Pizza to BBQ to Fish tacos to chips and salsa.

What are your interests/hobbies?

I love hanging out with my family – playing board games, dancing, playing kickball, going on bike rides, and watching movies. I also love to play music, take photos, go golfing and fishing.

What’s your dream vacation destination?

My dream vacation would be to rent a house for a couple of weeks with my family, in South Florida – gulf side. Where we would take in some sand and surf, maybe catch some spring training baseball, a few rounds of golf, otherwise, keep our toes in the sand.

What’s your favorite season and why?

As a kid I loved summer, what’s not to love? Hot weather, no school, my birthday, spending time outside, and fireworks. But now, my favorite season is autumn. Other than October is the best month for sports – MLB is in the playoffs, NBA and NHL seasons start, and NFL is full swing. But I like October for the things I can do with my family: hiking through Maplewood State Park, campfires, apple crisp, brilliant colors, Halloween, sweatshirts, crunchy leaves, new episodes of my favorite shows, and pumpkin carving!

If you won the lottery, what is the first purchase you would make?

The first thing that I would purchase is something I currently own…. well… in a few decades - I would pay off my mortgage. Then maybe a new set of golf clubs for the family then a Traeger grill.

If you could travel back in time, what time period would you go and why?

A red-letter day in the history of science - November 5, 1955 Tell us about your family and/or pets.

I have been married for nearly 16 years, to my college sweetheart, Lisa.

She works at our alma mater Concordia College as the college registrar.

We have two incredible daughters, Ingrid (10) and Maggie (7) both attend Oak Grove Lutheran School. We have two fur-babies – Arthur the Cat (13) and Riggins the Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier (1).

safety Use your Space Heater Safely

The safety of our members, employees, and communities is our number one priority.

If you are involved in a group and are looking for a speaker on electrical safety, call our manager of safety at 701.356.4400.

Many people turn to space heaters as a convenient source of warmth in winter months.

However, space heaters can be dangerous if not used properly. Cass County Electric Cooperative offers these tips for using your electric space heater safely:

• Keep the heater at least three feet from flammable items such as curtains, furniture, or bedspreads.

• Select a space heater with a guard around the heating element.

• When buying a heater, choose one that has been tested and certified by a nationally recognized testing institution such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

• Read and follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions.

• Keep children and pets away from space heaters.

• Never leave a space heater unattended. Always unplug the heater when it is not in use.

• Never go to sleep with a space heater still operating.

• Never use or store flammable liquids near a space heater.

• Do not use a heater in a bathroom.

Parts of the heater could be damaged in a high moisture area.

• Keep heaters away from water to

prevent electrocution.

• Do not use an extension cord or power strip with a space heater.

• Do not use the heater to dry clothes.

• Place the heater on a flat, level surface.

• Be sure the heater’s plug fits snugly in an outlet. The cord and plug may feel warm when operating since the unit draws so much power, but they should

not feel hot. If they do, unplug the heater and have a qualified repair person check for problems.

• Unplug the heater by pulling the plug straight out from the outlet.

Inspect the cord periodically. Do not use a heater with a damaged cord.

• Do not attempt to repair a broken heater yourself. It should be checked and repaired by a qualified appliance service center.

French Meat Pie

Ingredients: 1 ½ lbs hamburger 1 big onion 1 large potato, diced Cracker crumbs Sage Salt & pepper Preparation: Cook hamburger with onion and add salt and pepper.

When done, add enough water to cover the meat. Add diced potato and cook until done in a covered pan.

Add cracker crumbs, so fluid is absorbed but not dry.

Add sage to taste. Make pie in a 9” pie plate and bake at 375 degrees until golden brown.

Best Tater Tot Hotdish

Shanda Dudden, West Fargo

Ingredients: 1 can cream of chicken soup 1 can cheddar cheese soup 1 can sweet corn, drained ½ cup milk ½ bag tater tots 1-2 cups cheddar cheese 1 lb 80% ground beef Preparation: Brown hamburger. Season with salt and pepper and drain. Place hamburger on bottom of 9x13 baking dish. Sprinkle corn on top, then sprinkle with a layer of cheese. In a separate bowl, mix the 2 soups with ½ c milk. Pour over hamburger/corn/cheese. Place frozen tater tots on top, covering all areas. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and more cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes or until its bubbling and tater tots are crispy. Enjoy.

Ingredients: Elbow Noodles Hamburger Corn Tomato Sauce Preparation: Brown hamburger. Add tomato sauce. Boil noodles. Add to hamburger and sauce. Add corn. Mix it up and heat it. Serve in a bowl with shredded cheese on top. Named after my grandma, Eunice Zimprich.

Crockpot Potato Soup Jackie Holter, Fargo

Ingredients: 6 potatoes, peeled and diced 3 carrots, peeled and diced 1 cup celery, diced 4 chicken bouillon cubes 1 tablespoon parsley flakes 5 cups water ½ cup butter 1 (12oz) can evaporated milk Preparation: Put all ingredients except for evaporated milk into crockpot. Cover and cook on low for 10-12 hours. Stir in evaporated milk the last hour. Serve with chives and salt and pepper if desired — yields six generous servings.
