New battery technologies: Batteries are used daily by most of us today for smaller electronic devices. In the future, battery technology will be used by utilities for large-scale energy storage. Flow batteries are one type of new battery being studied by the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Flow batteries store energy in liquid solutions in external tanks; the bigger the tank, the more energy they store.

This new technology is a promising storage solution for renewable energy power sources like wind and solar.

Smart sensors: We use smart sensors on our power lines to detect line faults, sometimes before they happen. We also use high-speed sensors and switches to transfer power from another source for critical loads like hospitals during outages.

Unmanned aerial vehicles: CCEC currently uses a drone for our maintenance program to inspect power lines and other devices in hard to access locations to improve power reliability.

Electric Vehicles: Major automobile manufacturers have big plans to electrify the auto industry over the next ten years. For example, Toyota plans on electrifying all of its vehicles by 2025. If the electric vehicle evolution goes as planned, hundreds if not thousands of members will use electricity to power their transportation needs in the future.

Our future will be filled with new technologies, many driven by electricity. You can rest assured that Cass County Electric Cooperative will embrace technology when appropriate to enhance the service we provide to our members/owners.

When electric demand and market electricity prices are high, an off-peak device in the home automatically switches from an electric source to a backup source, such as propane or fuel oil. In exchange, participating members receive discounted offpeak rates, which are competitive with fuel oil and propane. To be eligible for incentives, all systems must have qualified backup, be new equipment, and be controlled on CCEC’s off-peak program. Credits will be applied to electric bill after visit from CCEC technician. These one-time incentives are in addition to the discounted off-peak electric rate.

Electric Vehicle (EV)

CCEC now has an off-peak rate that allows you to charge an electric vehicle for about half of the general rate. New EV chargers installed on off-peak may qualify for a one-time per charger rebate of $50/kW ($500 max incentive per charger).

Must be Level 2 - 240V chargers and on direct load control.

Off-peak Electric Heating

With the options and savings provided by off-peak electric heating, you’ll find that comfort and affordability go hand-in-hand. Learn about the heating equipment eligible for CCEC’s off-peak program below, and call 701-356-4400 to speak with our energy management department to find out how off-peak can fit your needs.

Plenum Heater

An electric plenum heater can convert your existing propane, natural gas, or fuel oil furnace into a dual-fuel system. The plenum heater typically sits on top of your fossil fuel furnace and uses your existing furnace fan to move air across the plenum heater elements to heat your home. Both your furnace and the electric plenum heater utilize the same thermostat and ductwork. Electric plenum heaters can be installed in conjunction with central air conditioning and air-source heat pumps.

Electric Baseboard

This versatile option uses electric resistance heating and can be used in almost any heating application. Electric baseboards have the advantage of individual room control for heating only the areas you use and require no ducts, making them a great choice for supplemental heating needs. The units are clean, safe, easy to maintain, and have a long life.

Air-Source Heat Pump

Standard air-source heat pumps serve as a heater by absorbing heat from outdoor air and pumping it indoors. The heat pump also serves as an air conditioner by absorbing heat from indoor air and pumping it outdoors. When properly installed, an air-source heat pump can deliver one-and-a-half to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes, because a heat pump moves heat rather than converting it from a fuel. Heat pumps are a popular choice due to their simple installation and competitive pricing. When selecting a new heat pump, it’s important to determine the proper size needed for your home. Bigger is not always better. We encourage you to work with your heating contractor to select a properly sized heat pump, which will be more efficient and provide better comfort and humidity control than one that is sized inappropriately for your home.

Mini-Split Heat Pump

Mini-split heat pumps are an option for cooling and also for supplemental heat in a home or office that does not have central ductwork. They work similarly to air-source heat pumps, with the ability to heat or cool. In heating mode, a mini-split heat pump extracts heat from outdoor air and transfers heat into the home or office. In cooling mode, it does this in a reverse cycle, extracting heat from within the structure and transferring it outdoors. Mini-splits can provide high flexibility in interior design options.

Among these options are ceiling-suspended, floor-standing, and wall-hanging units. These devices, which are typically composed of an outdoor compressor unit and an indoor heat exchanger coil-air handling unit, are also easy to install.

Electric floor heat is also a popular option for shops, garages, and even some basements. We recommend using a floor-sensing thermostat for both hydronic and cable floor heating applications. www.kwh.com

On one of the coldest days of winter, strong winds and blowing snow made travel difficult for everyone, including this rabbit. Employees noticed it hunkered down in a snowdrift in an effort to escape the gusts. It spent most of the day in its makeshift shelter—a decision just about everyone could empathize with.

You’re not alone in the dark

Power outages are never convenient.

It takes a lot of hands to keep your power on, and even more hands to get it up and running when an outage occurs. Cass County Electric Cooperative works hard to restore your electric service when outages occur, but there are necessary steps to take to ensure that power is restored to the majority of members as quickly and safely as possible.

With CCEC’s Outage Management System (OMS) and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), our power control technicians are often able to narrow down the location and sometimes even the equipment involved in a power outage before line crews are dispatched. This knowledge helps the technicians give crews an idea of what happened, but often times, it takes some detective work to find the source of the problem once crews are on-site.

Powering Up

1 High-Voltage Transmission Lines Transmission towers and cables that supply power to transmission substations (and thousands of consumers) rarely fail. But when damage occurs, these facilities must be repaired before other parts of the system can operate.

2 Distribution Substation Each substation serves hundreds or thousands of consumers. When a major outage occurs, line crews inspect substations to determine if problems stem from transmission lines feeding into the substation, the substation itself, or if problems exist down the line.

3 Main Distribution Lines If the problem cannot be isolated at a distribution substation, distribution lines are checked. These lines carry power to large groups of consumers in communities or housing developments.

5 Individual Homes If your home remains without power, the service line between a transformer and your residence may need to be repaired. Always call to report an outage to help line crews isolate these local issues.

4 Tap Lines If local outages persist, supply lines, called tap lines, are inspected. These lines deliver power to transformers, either mounted on poles or placed on pads for underground service, outside businesses, schools, and homes.

When you’re a member of a co-op that saves money, it pays off—literally. A not-for-profit cooperative like Cass County Electric exists solely for the members it serves. When our margins are healthy, excess revenue makes its way back to members in the form of capital credits. It pays to save in other ways too.

Switching to paperless billing not only helps keep paper from needlessly ending up in landfills, but it also earns you a one-time $5 bill credit and cuts back on co-op expenses. The same goes for enrolling in autopay through a bank account—you get a one-time $20 bill credit, and the co-op saves on credit card fees.

safety USE YOUR SPACE HEATER SAFELY

The safety of our members, employees, and communities is our number one priority.

Many people turn to space heaters as a convenient source of warmth in winter months.

However, space heaters can be dangerous if not used properly. Cass County Electric Cooperative offers these tips for using your electric space heater safely: • Keep the heater at least three feet from flammable items such as curtains, furniture, or bedspreads.

• Select a space heater with a guard around the heating element.

• Do not use a heater in a bathroom.

Parts of the heater could be damaged in a high moisture area.

• Keep heaters away from water to prevent electrocution.

• Do not use an extension cord or power strip with a space heater.

• Do not use the heater to dry clothes.

• Do not attempt to repair a broken heater yourself. It should be checked and repaired by a qualified appliance service center.

• Be sure the heater’s plug fits snugly in an outlet. The cord and plug may feel warm when operating since the unit draws so much power, but they should not feel hot. If they do, unplug the heater and have a qualified repair person check for problems.

• Unplug the heater by pulling the plug straight out from the outlet.

Inspect the cord periodically. Do not use a heater with a damaged cord.

• When buying a heater, choose one that has been tested and certified by a nationally recognized testing institution such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

• Read and follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions.

•Keep children and pets away from space heaters.

• Never leave a space heater unattended. Always unplug the heater when it is not in use.

• Never go to sleep with a space heater still operating.

• Never use or store flammable liquids near a space heater.

• Place the heater on a flat, level surface.

Pillow-Soft Dinner Rolls

Mary Bond/Robin Cummins, Walcott, ND

Ingredients:

4½ t. active dry yeast, two of the packets ½ c. warm water (110° to 115°) 2 c. warm milk (110° to 115°) 6 T. shortening 2 large eggs ¼ c. sugar 1 ½ t. salt 7-7 ½ c. all-purpose flour Preparation: In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water, add milk, shortening, eggs, sugar, salt, and 3 cups of flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.

Crock Pot Rice Pilaf Ruth Frank, Fargo

Ingredients:

1 pkg or 1 ½ c. long grain & wild rice mix 3 c. chicken stock 2 carrots, diced 2 stalks of celery, diced ½ c. slivered almonds ½ stick butter 1 t. salt ½ t. pepper 1 T. Parsley Preparation: Combine in 2-3 qt. crock pot and mix well. Cook on high for two hours, until tender.

Turn onto a floured surface, knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes (dough will be sticky). Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top.

Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about one hour.

Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface, and divide into 24 pieces. Shape each into a roll. Place 2” apart on greased baking sheets. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.

Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove from oven and place on wire racks. Yield-2 dozen rolls.

Ingredients:

1 c. peanut butter 1 c. brown sugar 1 large egg 1 t. baking soda 1 c. chocolate chips 1 t. vanilla-optional Preparation: Preheat oven to 350°. Mix ingredients in order listed. Form 1 ½ inch balls and place on cookie sheet. They spread so don’t place close together. Bake 9-10 minutes.

SMART HOME ENTRY 2: LEVITON WI-FI PLUG-IN OUTLET Last month, we set up a Samsung SmartThings hub to kick off our smart home experiment. With the hub in place and connected to the internet, we’re ready to begin adding additional items and exploring the variety of smart devices available.

The first item we’ll add is a smart outlet. We’ve written about the various power-saving capabilities of different types of smart power strips in Highline Notes before, and the Leviton Wi-Fi Plug-in Outlet fits right into that category of items.

Much like a power strip, the Leviton Plug-in Outlet doesn’t require any wiring—simply plug it into any existing outlet and choose the load to

plug into it. From there, the plug can be operated manually with the single button on its face. Additionally, after a brief programming process to make the plug visible to the SmartThings hub and mobile app, you’ll be able to control it with a mobile device from anywhere with a data connection.

The smart plug combined with the SmartThings app provides a world of options: switch the lamp on before walking into a room, start up a fan at a certain time of day, fully power down TVs or other entertainment items from a mobile device. And when combined with other plugs and smart items, your daily schedules will quickly come to life—entirely on their own, if you so choose.
