Be Prepared for Winter’s Wrath Cass County Electric Cooperative strives to provide you with reliable, uninterrupted service every day of the year, but sometimes Mother Nature creates unavoidable power outages. We want you to remain safe during severe winter weather, so consider preparing now for the possibility of power outages this winter.

Outage Safety: Mother Nature isn’t always kind to power lines. Winter winds, snow, and ice sometimes prove to be too much for utility poles and power lines. If you see a downed power line or utility pole, contact Cass County Electric Cooperative immediately. Do not go near the line or the pole. Lines on the ground may still be live and dangerous.

Report an outage: Because power outages can’t be totally eliminated, Cass County Electric Cooperative offers these steps to follow if an outage occurs: • Check your own fuses and circuit breakers first. If nothing has been tripped, report the outage at 701.356.4499.

• If outage is widespread, your call

may be directed to our interactive voice response system (IVR).

If your phone number is linked to your Cass County Electric account, IVR will automatically send your information to our outage management system (OMS). This will help technicians pinpoint the outage.

• Be sure your current email address and phone number are on your account. This will allow you to receive faster outage information and updates from us.

During an outage: To prevent an overload on the system while power is being restored, take these steps: • Turn off every inside light except one.

• Turn down your thermostat.

• Make sure your kitchen range is off, both the surface and the oven.

• Turn off all unnecessary appliances and unplug sensitive electronic equipment.

• When power comes back on, slowly switch your appliances and lights back on and gradually return your thermostat to its normal setting.

Directors are encouraged to attend local, state, and national meetings and conferences to represent CCEC and its members and to gain information on how to best serve the cooperative. CCEC covers the expenses of registration, travel, lodging, and dining for events its directors attend for cooperative business. Additionally, each member receives a $400 monthly retainer for their time and dedication to the co-op.

Through October, CCEC’s 2017 director expenses have totaled $146,951.85 and can be broken down as follows: 70% - Local, state, national meeting expenses (registration, travel, lodging, dining) 25% - Monthly retainers 5% - Education & miscellaneous fees Through October, CCEC’s directors have dedicated 2,331 hours to cooperative business.

Praline Ice Cream Topping

Marshal Albright (from mom Dorothy), President/CEO

Ingredients:

7 T. butter, melted 1 ¼ cups light brown sugar 3 T. flour ¾ cup light corn syrup 2/3 cup evaporated milk 1 cup pecans Preparation: Whisk together butter, brown sugar, flour and corn syrup, microwave for 3 minutes, stir well. Microwave additional 2-3 minutes until sugar is dissolved, add evaporated milk and pecans, stir well. Makes 3 cups, store in refrigerator for up to three weeks. This can be used on ice cream, bread pudding, cheesecake, brownies and more.

Cheeseburger Soup

Ingredients:

3 lbs. hamburger 2 cups chopped onion 4 cups shredded carrots 2 cups diced celery 2 tsp. diced basil 2 tsp. dried parsley 1 stick (1/2 cup) butter 2 cans (14.5 oz.) chicken broth 6 cups diced raw potatoes ½ cup flour 4 cups shredded cheese 3 cups milk ½ tsp. salt ½ cup sour cream 2-3 tsp. minced garlic Preparation: Brown hamburger, drain and set aside. In the same pan sauté onions, carrots, celery, basil, parsley in 1 tablespoon of butter until tender. Add broth, potatoes and beef, bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 10 – 12 minutes until potatoes are tender. In separate pan, melt remaining butter, add flour and milk. Stir constantly, boil and stir for 2 minutes. Add to the soup mixture and reduce heat to low. Stir in cheese, salt, and pepper until cheese melts. Add sour cream, and serve.

Ingredients:

2 lbs. browned hamburger, drain 32 oz. Kraft Velveeta Cheese 8 oz. Kraft Philadelphia Cream Cheese 24 oz. Pace Chunky Salsa-Medium Preparation: Combine all ingredients in a Crock-Pot on medium heat. Let simmer until everything is melted together. Enjoy with your favorite chips - I prefer Tostitos Scoops!

Tomato Basil Soup

Ingredients:

1 cup chopped onion 1/4 cup butter or margarine 4-5 fresh tomatoes, peeled, seeded, and diced 2 Tbsp. tomato paste 1 Tbsp. sugar salt 1-2 tsp. fresh basil (dried basil will work) 1/2 tsp. thyme 1/4 tsp. pepper 1/4 cup flour 4 cups chicken broth, divided 1 cup whipping cream - use at the end Preparation: In a large pot over medium heat, sauté onion in butter until tender. Add tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, salt, basil, thyme and pepper; simmer for 10 minutes stirring occasionally. Combine flour and 3/4 cup broth to form a smooth paste, then add to tomato mixture with remaining broth. Bring to a boil stirring constantly. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 30 minutes or until tomatoes are tender. Remove from the heat. Stir in cream; serve immediately.

Ingredients:

2 pkgs. cream cheese 1 bottle Thousand Island dressing 2 pkgs. corned beef, cut into small pieces 16 oz. pkg. sauerkraut, drained Preparation: Heat in crock pot on low, stirring occasionally until cheese melts. Keep warm while serving. Serve with crackers, chips, or cocktail rye bread.

Mustard & Dill Fish

Ingredients:

¼ cup lemon juice, from concentrate, I use ReaLemon ¼ cup olive oil 2 tsp. chopped fresh dill 1 Tbsp. Dijon or grainy mustard 1 clove garlic, minced 1 lb. fresh fish fillets (Sea Bass, Salmon, Halibut, or Swordfish) Salt and pepper to taste Preparation: Place fish in shallow baking dish. Whisk lemon juice, oil, dill, mustard, garlic, salt and pepper. Pour mix over fish, and let marinate in refrigerator for 60 minutes. Bake at 375* for 10-12 minutes or grill over medium heat for 10-12 minutes.

TIP: To peel tomatoes, boil in water for about 1-2 minutes, you will see a cracking of the peel. Dip in cold water and peel. Cut in half and squeeze out the seeds and dice.

While many tech trinkets these days are meant for entertainment, there is a whole world of items dedicated to making your home a safer place.

Home security is a very serious topic and exists through a large variety of different products and services. But it doesn’t take a full-fledged security system to increase your home’s resistance to bad guys and keep them at bay.

Security lighting can go a long way toward making your home more formidable, and today’s tech options mean that even a small upgrade

!

can have an impact. LED light bulbs are becoming a popular choice in traditional light situations for their longevity and minimal energy use, but couple LED light bulbs with motion and light detectors and you’ve got an effective security light that won’t break the bank.

A two-pack of Elrigs LED motion sensor bulbs will set you back about $25. After screwing one into your light socket of choice and flipping the light switch on, the bulb will undergo a brief calibration period, and then it’s ready to go.

The bulbs come equipped with a high-frequency (HF) sensor that emits a steady microwave signal into its coverage area. The signal bounces back to the sensor and is compared to another signal sent just after the first. Any difference between the two indicates motion and triggers the light on. An additional ambient light sensor prevents the bulb from turning on in high-light or daytime situations, making for a low-cost and efficient security lighting system suited for nearly any situation.

When you’re dealing with a suspicious caller, keep a few things in mind. Disconnection is an unfortunate part of the business for utilities, but CCEC will never disconnect an account without first issuing several notices. We’ll never call you and threaten disconnection without immediate payment or request prepaid card information, either. You’ll be provided prior notice and an adequate timeline to make payment arrangements before power is ever shut off, should it come to that. If you think you’ve been contacted by a scammer, hang up and call our offices. Stay smart, and stay safe!

Operation Round Up

Operation Round Up, the CCEC program that rounds up members’ bills to the nearest dollar, has openings for directorship positions. This board meets quarterly at the CCEC headquarters in Fargo and determines where and how ORU funds are allocated to local nonprofits. Interested applicants can download the director application online at www.kwh.com/content/ORU, complete and email it to Linda Otterson, lotterson@kwh.com by Monday, December 11, 2017.

Candidates are currently being sought for Districts 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Directors are members who must reside within physical districts which are representative of CCEC’s service territory.

Cass County Electric Cooperative

CCEC is governed by a nine-member board of directors who are elected to three-year terms at the co-op’s annual meeting in April. This elected board governs the direction of the cooperative and meets monthly.

If you are a Cass County Electric member and are interested in becoming a Director, contact Karen Egeberg at (701) 356-4405 for a 2018 director election petition packet. In compliance with Bylaw requirements, a petition, biographical information and such other information as the board or credentialing committee may require to establish and verify the qualifications of the proposed director to serve must be delivered to the Cooperative office no less than (90) days (by January 31, 2018) prior to the date of the Annual Member Meeting at which an election will be held: District 2 Doug Anderson (i) Arthur District 3 Sid Berg (i) Colfax District 5-1 Wendy Loucks (i) Fargo Directors are elected by ballot for a three-year term.
