The PRx Performance showroom – aptly named the “Tank” from their appearance on – displays the company’s ever-evolving product line.

A booming business with bite Cass County Electric Cooperative member PRx Performance builds new headquarters with growth in mind The new PRx Performance facility in Fargo, N.D., isn’t the drab, characterless warehouse one expects in an industrial park.

The parking lot features several electric vehicle chargers, employee pooches play in building’s front showroom, and a large stuffed shark hangs from the balcony of the entry stairwell – an homage to the founders’ 2016 breakthrough appearance on ABC’s reality show, “Shark Tank.”

As PRx project manager Mike Harlan explains it, the employee environment is all part of the home-gym manufacturer’s “keep it weird” workplace mentality.

“We just had a basketball court installed here in the warehouse, and that has kind of been a centerpiece for people to go out and bond. Not everyone is good,” Harlan said with a joking grin, “but it’s all just for fun.”

The PRx Performance team of more than 65 people finished moving into the new $23 million, 194,000-square-foot north Fargo headquarters in January 2022. After

occupying seven different buildings in almost as many years, the founders – CEO Brian Brasch and president Erik Hopperstad – had an opportunity to finally construct a facility that fit their unique employee culture and allowed them to manufacture their wallmounted squat racks and weight accessories in-house.

The company was already growing fast after becoming nationally known for its “Shark Tank” appearance. But just as Harlan joined the team 2 ½ years ago, a global pandemic shut down gyms.

Home fitness equipment was suddenly as sought after as hand sanitizer and toilet paper.

“The world of COVID is really what accelerated the building project.

We became so busy – we just exploded overnight,” Harlan said.

“It really necessitated getting into a facility that could support that growth. We accelerated the planning, we put a lot into action, and here we are today.”

managing construction-based ventures, the hastened pace of the project was quite a lift for Harlan. Luckily, he had a power partner in the form of Cass County Electric Cooperative’s (CCEC) Chad Brousseau, business account manager and energy expert.

“My prior familiarity with electricity was turning my lights on,” Harlan joked. “So Chad provided a lot of good information and guidance about things to ask and things to look into. Even today, he provided information on some of the UPS (uninterruptible power supply) details we’re looking into to help prevent equipment damage in the event of a power surge. He’s been a great resource overall.”

“Being a cooperative, we’re member owned. PRx is a partowner of Cass County Electric, so we want to be there to provide those resources,” Brousseau replied. “I think that’s what sets the cooperative model apart from other utilities, is that service aspect. We want all of our business members to be successful.”

The new facility includes an expansive 40,000-square-foot manufacturing wing that allows PRx to bring a large portion of production in-house.

“You don’t see that everywhere, and that’s why I really want to emphasize that it’s really appreciated, that it feels a lot more like a partnership than anything else,” Harlan said.

CCEC also assisted PRx with their building’s sustainability features, including their workplace electric vehicle charging stations and the grid-interconnection process for their 80-kW DC solar array, which is on the cooperative’s net-billing rate. Harlan says innovation is in the company’s DNA, from alternative energy use to new product research and development. The team continues to grow its PRx Performance product line but has

also branched into new areas to make sure everyone can “fit fitness into life.” They recently launched a new SensoryRx equipment line (sensoryrx.com) that can be easily configured for those with special sensory-focused needs. The system includes steel pods and connectors that can hold swings, rope tunnels and more – all supporting the mission of “finding focus through movement.” The development team is also excited to unveil a new fitness app this year that will place enhanced home fitness at users’ fingertips.

PRx Performance anticipates continued advancement into new markets and has planned for that growth in its new facility. The headquarters has room to bring on dozens of new employees and was laid out to physically expand to the north in the future.

“It really is a great place to start a business and to have it grow,” Harlan said. “I’m sure there are any number of places our founders could have picked to move, but we stayed right here in Fargo, North Dakota. It’s a part of their roots.”

It’s evident PRx is making gains – for the company, for its co-workers and for the community.

“It’s good to be successful, but it’s a great feeling to be able to bring that ability to work out to people,” Harlan said. “That may sound silly, but it’s true – especially for me and the people who work here, exercise is a passion that we have.

And it doesn’t have to be at a gym all the time. You can take it into your garage. And in North Dakota in wintertime, that’s important,” he added with a smile.

Increasing your home’s insulation is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to reduce energy waste.

Install and set programmable thermostats that save energy by automatically regulating your home’s temperature.

You can save as much as 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills by simply turning your thermostat back 10% to 15% for eight hours.

LET THE SUNLIGHT SHINE Install more energyefficient windows, doors and skylights.

Air infiltrates into and out of your home through every hole and crack. About 20% of this air infiltrates through openings in your windows, doors and skylights.

REPLACE THE LIGHTS Install energyefficient lighting.

An average household dedicates 11% of its energy budget to lighting. Using new lighting technologies can reduce lighting energy use in your home by 50% to 75%.

SEAL THOSE LEAKS Seal air leaks around floors, walls, ceilings, windows, doors and fireplaces with caulk, spray foam and weatherstripping. Warm air leaking into your home during the summer and out of your home during the winter can waste a lot of your energy dollars. The potential energy savings from reducing drafts in a home ranges from 5% to 30% per year, and the home is generally much more comfortable afterward.

SEAL THOSE DUCTS Seal ducts and make sure they are straight and properly connected.

Many duct systems are not insulated properly or have gaps or holes where air can leak out. You can lose up to 60% of your heated air before it reaches the register if your ducts are not insulated and they travel through unheated spaces, such as an attic or crawlspace.

The Cass County Electric Cooperative (CCEC) board of directors appointed Paul White of Stirum, ND, to the District 1 director seat left vacant when Director Marcy Svenningsen did not run for re-election at this year’s cooperative annual meeting. White was officially appointed and seated on the Board on June 28, 2022.

White is the General Manager of the Bobcat dealership of Gwinner.

Commitment to Community - RDFC Grant Cass County Electric Cooperative (CCEC) has joined the Rural Development Finance Corporation (RDFC) to support outdoor recreation in our rural service area, distributing $2,000 to two separate initiatives.

The RDFC is a North Dakota nonprofit finance and development corporation.

RDFC’s member-owners are the North Dakota Rural Electric Cooperatives, nine North Dakota Rural Telecommunication Cooperatives, and the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives.

RDFC encourages economic diversification and community vitality by generating funding that supports sustainable asset building.

As a member of the RDFC, CCEC has an allocation of funds available to increase awareness of their more extensive loan program that funds community-based projects and nonprofit entities with low-interest

loans. Community groups in CCEC’s service area are eligible to apply for a grant of up to $2,000 for communitybased projects each year.

In 2021, Arthur, Hunter, Valley City, and Wimbledon Fire Districts received funds. This year the grant money went toward boardwalks near Lake Ashtabula on the North Country Trail and toward the Sheyenne River Water Trail projects.

The North Country Trail Association (NCTA) mission is to develop, maintain, protect and promote the North Country National Scenic Trail as the premier hiking path across the northern tier of the United States through a trail-wide coalition of volunteers and partners.

These new boardwalks along Lake Ashtabula will help ensure a safer experience on the trail for residents and lake visitors.

The Sheyenne River Water Trail is currently being developed. It starts north of Lake Ashtabula at the Army

Corps of Engineers Johnson Landing on the lake, and continues through the lake.

Visitors portage around Baldhill Dam and then get back on the Sheyenne River. The trail has portages around Mill Dam in Valley City and various small dams. In Lisbon, guests get out at Sandager Park and put in below the Lisbon Dam. There will be landing improvements along the way in 2022. The trail ends at the east landing at the Sheyenne National Grassland. A map will be developed as landing sites are put in and improved.

“One of Cass County Electric Cooperative’s core values is Commitment for Community,” said Paul Matthys, CCEC vice president of member and energy services. “These grants are our way of helping to ensure that our rural communities enjoy a vibrant and fulfilling quality of life.”

Participate in Cass County Electric Cooperative’s (CCEC) Prairie Sun Community Solar project to receive the benefits of a solar panel without the installation or maintenance.

Community solar is an affordable, low-risk way for members to benefit from solar energy without the hassles of designing, permitting, installing, maintaining, and insuring your own photovoltaic solar array.

Prairie Sun Community Solar is a 102-kW solar array CCEC established in Fargo, North Dakota, in 2016. It consists of 324 solar panels owned by CCEC. These panels are available to lease by CCEC members.

Energy from the array is distributed back to the electrical grid by CCEC distribution lines. The panel lease is paid for upfront, and the energy credit produced by the panel is reflected on a member’s monthly bill. The upfront cost of a panel is on a sliding scale based on the projects anticipated

expiration date. Members generally see a credit of around $35 a year. Monthly credits are calculated based on the current electric rate; this means that if electric rates increase, so will the monthly credit.

Prairie Sun Community Solar benefits you and the environment by reducing overall fossil-fuel consumption. Since the installation of the panels in 2016, they have produced over 771.4 MWh of electricity. That’s enough energy to operate a TV for 223,394 days! tech Surge protection 101

A power surge is an unexpected voltage increase that can occur from various sources. Regardless of the cause, power surges can majorly damage electronic devices and equipment in your home.

One of the most common causes of a power surge is lightning. Most of us have experienced this during a severe thunderstorm. When lightning strikes an electrical system, the excess current must be channeled somewhere––unfortunately, in many cases, it’s sent through a home. Your best bet is to unplug all unnecessary devices and electronics during severe thunderstorms.

Another common cause of power surges is electrical overload. This happens when devices or appliances are plugged into an outlet that can’t handle the required amount of voltage, or if multiple devices are plugged into one outlet through an extension cord.

If you’re experiencing power surges due to electrical overload, it’s time to call a qualified electrician to evaluate your home’s circuits and electrical needs.

Faulty wiring in a home can also cause power surges. Damaged or exposed wires can cause spikes in voltage, creating a potentially dangerous situation. If you notice signs of faulty wiring, like visible burns on outlets, buzzing sounds from outlets or frequently tripped circuit breakers, your home may be due for electrical wiring repairs and updates.

Surges can also occur after a power outage. Sometimes, when electricity is being restored and reconnected, members experience a quick surge

in current. Similar to advice for a surge caused by lightning, it’s best to unplug sensitive electronics during the outage––then wait to plug them back in after power is fully restored.

Aside from unplugging devices when you suspect a power surge, there are two ways you can take additional precautions to protect electronics in your home.

Point-of-use surge protection devices, like power strips, can protect electronics during most surges.

But remember, not all power strips include surge protection, so read the packaging label carefully before you buy, and don’t overload the power strip with too many devices. You can also install specialized electrical outlets that offer additional surge protection. Talk to a trusted electrician to learn more.

Another option is a whole-home surge protector, which can help protect your home from larger, more powerful surges. In most cases, whole-home suppressors are connected to your home’s service panel and include features like thermal fuses and notification capabilities that indicate when a device has been impacted by a surge. Whole-home surge protection prices vary based on the size of the home and suppressor. Whole-home suppressors should always be installed by a licensed electrician, so consider the installation cost as well.

Occasional power surges are inevitable, but by unplugging devices when you think a surge may occur and using additional levels of protection like power strips or whole-home suppressors, you can better safeguard your sensitive electronics and devices.

If you dig near a transformer (even if it is beyond the clearance requirements), you could inadvertently hit a live underground cable. Always call 811 prior to any digging.

• Keep a clear path to the transformer. Even though the transformer seems like it is in “your yard,” it is technically on an easement, and our workers need clear access to it to maintain equipment and keep power running smoothly.

Ingredients: 3 very ripe bananas, peeled (~1 1/2 cups mashed) 1/3 cup butter, melted 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup sugar 1 large egg, beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour Preparation: Preheat the oven to 350°F and butter an 8 x 4-inch loaf pan. In a mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork until smooth. Stir the melted butter into the mashed bananas. Mix in the baking soda and salt. Stir in the sugar, beaten egg, and vanilla extract. Mix in the flour. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes at 350°F, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool in the pan for a few minutes. Then remove the banana bread from the pan and let cool completely before serving.

Crust ingredients: 1 cup butter 2 cups flour 2 tablespoons sugar Preparation: Mix and pat into a 9x13 inch pan and bake at 350°F for 10 minutes.

Filling ingredients: 5-6 cups rhubarb, cut fine 6 egg yolks 2 cups sugar 4 tablespoons flour 1 cup cream 1/4 teaspoon salt Preparation: Mix and pour over baked crust.

Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes.

Topping ingredients: 6 egg whites 3/4 cup sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla Preparation: Beat egg whites until stiff. Add sugar and vanilla. Spread over the baked custard filling. Bake at 350°F until light brown, about 10-15 minutes.

Ingredients: 1 3/4 cups oatmeal 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup margarine 1 3/4 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda Preparation: Mix and pat into a greased and floured 9x13 inch pan.

Save 1/3 for topping—bake for 15 minutes at 350°F. Ingredients: 4 egg yolks 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons cornstarch 2 cups softened raisins 1 1/2 cups sugar 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 2 cups sour cream Preparation: Mix and boil on low heat for 5 to 10 minutes until thick (burns easily). Pour over crust and sprinkle with remaining crumbs— bake 20 minutes at 350°F.
