Now, with life getting back to normal, I think about the role we play in our community. While our purpose is to provide safe and reliable energy to you, the members we serve, we have a greater mission––to be a catalyst for good.

Over the years, you’ve probably heard or read about Cass County Electric Cooperative’s commitment to its communities. This is one of the core values that set cooperatives apart from other types of utilities and businesses.

We’ve always taken this mission and responsibility to heart. It’s who we are as a co-op.

Over the past few months, like so many of you, we’ve risen to meet new challenges and strengthen the safety net for our community, particularly for those who are most vulnerable. Because of the events that have occurred over the past year, we’ve made numerous adjustments to programs and operations to maintain business continuity while staying focused on the bigger mission of helping our

Chamber of Commerce and invests in area economic development associations. We support numerous nonprofit organizations by volunteering and providing financial assistance. In addition, we’ve made our community room available for community meetings and events.

You’re probably aware of our Operation Round Up program, where we take donations from generous members like you who have “rounded up” the amount due on their electric bill to the nearest dollar to help nonprofits and those in need. In 2020, the program paid out more than $219,000. You’ve also likely read about our Youth Tour program, through which we take two of our community’s brightest young people to Washington, D.C., for a weeklong immersion to experience democracy in action.

You’ll also see our employees serving on local boards and committees, coaching youth sports, and volunteering at charitable events. Because when you work at a co-op, you understand how important a strong community is––after all, without you, the co-op wouldn’t exist.

We have a solid commitment to safety––not just for our employees, but for our community. We visit schools to teach children of all ages how to stay safe around electricity.

We hold safety demonstrations at community meetings, demonstrate electrical safety to area fire departments and educate at other gatherings.

Board meeting highlights May 2021 2021 April Board Highlights The Cass County Electric Board of Directors met in person on April 27, 2021, and discussed the following topics: • Approved the April 2021 consent agenda of the regular board meeting consisting of minutes of the previous meeting, monthly department reports, director expense report, Annual Report on Business Continuity Plan, and the March Purchased Power Adjustment (PPA).

• President/CEO Marshal Albright gave the president’s report reporting on legislative updates that are important to our industry, annual meeting planning updates, Minnkota meetings attended, the NRECA Legislative Conference, and education donations.

• Received the first quarter 2021 financial report.

• Moved to approve the revisions to Policy 304 – Extension of Electric Facilities, the 2020 Form 900 for filing with the IRS, and Rate 317 – Economic Development Rate.

ENERGY EFFICIENT HOME Energy expert: Russell Schell Organization: RJ Energy Solutions In 1983, Russel Schell started his HVAC/R (heating, ventallation, air conditioning, and refrigeration) career in the U.S. Air Force technical training. He worked on many different systems throughout those years, such as very high-level clean rooms at Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, where the Hubble Telescope was built. He has spent more than 30 years as a field engineer working at many different universities, schools, and healthcare facilities systems to make them more energy efficient and improve indoor air quality. These systems range from large commercial systems to residential heat pumps.

He’s completed various types of energy audits, from rating the quality of insulation to various electrical and mechanical systems.

“How to” set my programmable thermostat to save money Supplies: Programmable thermostat, smartphone Why it’s important: Setting up a programmable thermostat can seem as frustrating as setting up other electronic devices within a home. And the continuous adjusting of the thermostat and never getting the perfect temperature is what we call “tinkeritis.” A programmable thermostat can save up to 30% on your energy bills if set correctly. The general rule is to keep your house warmer than usual when you are away and lower the thermostat setting when you return home and need cooling.

STEP 1: The first setting to check is the “WAKE” mode. In the wintertime and summertime, you can set the ideal temperature 30 minutes before you get out of bed.

STEP 2: The “WORK” mode eliminates the need to heat or cool an empty home when you leave for work. Program your thermostat to start work mode 15 minutes before the time you usually leave for work. Set this temperature 5 degrees above (summer) or below (winter) your normal temperature.

STEP 3: The “RETURN” mode if for when you return home from work and want a temperature that provides your preferred comfort. The return setting should be set 30 minutes before you usually return home to ensure your house is at the desired temperature when you walk through the door.

STEP 4: The “SLEEP” mode is when you will be under the covers, so you don’t need the house to be at the same temperature as during the day. Set this mode to 5 degrees lower than your normal daytime temperature 15 minutes before you crawl into bed.

Bonus tip: If your basement is always much colder in the summertime than the upstairs, this tip could help you save.

Move the switch on your fan to run continuously and use the cooler basement air to cool the upstairs. It might not seem very efficient to leave the fan running, but it’s much more efficient to run the fan than running the compressor, which provides cooling.

“How to” clean my dishwasher filter Supplies: Warm soapy water and a toothbrush Why it’s important: A well-maintained dishwasher filter can mean the difference between sparkling clean tableware and items marred by unsightly, unsanitary stuck-on food. Not only is this frustrating, but you’re using additional energy to rewash them, whether with hot water by hand or sending them through the wash again. Before you run out and buy a new dishwasher or special cleaner, check the filter.

STEP 1: Remove the bottom rack and locate your dishwasher’s filter. The location on the bottom will depend on the brand of dishwasher. When in doubt, you can refer to the owner’s manual, or nowadays, you can Google the model number to find your specific brand’s location.

STEP 2: Once you find your filter, remove the upper, cylindrical filter by twisting to unlock it. In most models, the filter twists counterclockwise, but there should be arrows indicating the correct direction.

Once unlocked, pull up gently to remove the filter.

STEP 3: After you lift the filter out, examine the area where the filter is installed. You might be surprised by what you find.

STEP 4: Hand-wash the filter with warm, soapy water and rinse thoroughly under running water. For stubborn pieces of food, gently use an old toothbrush.

STEP 5: Place the clean filter back into the dishwasher. Turn the filter until it locks into place. Give the spray arm a quick spin to ensure that it’s not being blocked. Now your dishwasher is ready for the next load of dirty dishes.

Bonus tip: Clean every 3-6 months depending on dishwasher’s performance. Use the eco-mode to air dry and save even more.

“How to” clean out my dryer vent

Supplies: Dryer vent cleaning kit (local hardware store), power drill, vacuum, broom and dustpan Why it’s important: Firefighters respond to approximately 14,000 emergencies per year due to fires caused by plugged dryer vent piping. If your loads are taking longer to dry, that’s a clue that you need to clean your dryer vent.

STEP 1: Before you can clean your dryer vent, you need to locate it. Once you’ve identified your outdoor dryer exhaust vent, inspect it and look for any debris, including dust, lint, or even dead bugs. Wash any screens and clear out any noticeable obstructions.

STEP 2: Carefully disconnect power to your dryer. Remove any metal tape or clamps that attach your dryer vent pipe to its exhaust. Be sure to apply gentle pressure when pulling the vent pipe from the wall duct avoid damaging the pipe.

STEP 3: Use the hose attachment of a vacuum cleaner or shop vac to suck up any lint in or around the hole. If you have a handheld vacuum, you can repeat this process on the outside duct. Otherwise, try to clear debris manually from outside.

STEP 4: Attach the dryer brush from your vent cleaning kit to your power drill and insert the brush end of the rod into your duct. Push the brush as far back as you possibly can, bearing in mind that you might need to delicately maneuver the hose attachment depending on the route your duct takes.

STEP 5: Now it’s time to clean up your new fluffy friends. Vacuum or sweep up the dust bunnies. Then plug your dryer back in and reconnect your ductwork. Turn on your dryer and listen as the air flows smoothly out the vent. Now that’s the sound of energy savings.

Bonus tip: Wash clothing on cold, consider hang drying, clean out the lint trap after each use, and wash and dry full loads.

“How to” clean my AC unit filter

Supplies: Safety glasses, clothes (you don’t mind getting dirty), pair of gloves, water hose with spray nozzle Why it’s important: Keeping up on the maintenance of your household appliances not only saves you money on energy costs, but it saves on the wear and tear of the appliances. You’ll see some of the items that are pointed out not only save you money on energy, wear and tear, but also save you from a catastrophic failure such as a house fire.

OUTSIDE: There are two parts to most residential heating and cooling units. The portion that sits outside is called a condenser. This can be a costly portion of your energy bill and expensive to replace if not kept clean.

STEP 1: Visually inspect for any grass, leaves, or debris restricting airflow through the coils. If any, they can be swept off with a soft bristle brush.

STEP 2: If you see the coils have dirt buildup, first shut off the condensing unit and then spray down the coil with a garden hose, then wait for 15 minutes and turn the condensing unit back on.

STEP 3: If the coil has oil or grease buildup, you’ll need to use a cleaning chemical that is specialized for washing condensers. Anytime you are using a cleaning solution, keep safety in mind and wear eye protection along with gloves to protect your skin.

INSIDE: The portion that sits inside the home (furnace) is where you will need to check the filter and replace it periodically. Replacing HVAC filters is essential and one of the tasks that are often overlooked.

STEP 1: The filter will have a size written on it and can be found at most hardware stores.

STEP 2: This filter will generally be found close to the furnace and easy to access. You have to shut the furnace power off and take the filter out, and then inspect it to see if there is dirt buildup. If so, replace it with a new one.

Bonus tip: Keep the refrigerator temperature at 40° F. The freezer temperature should be 0° F. Check temperatures periodically. Appliance thermometers are the best way of knowing these temperatures and are generally inexpensive.

Featured recipient: GiGi’s Playhouse GiGi’s Playhouse was the ORU featured recipient for the second quarter distribution.

They received $10,000 to help rebuild their local facility.

Employees of Cass County Electric (CCEC) pulled out their best recipes and opened up their wallets in May to raise funds for the return of ‘GiGi’s Playhouse in Fargo, which was recently lost to a fire.

On May 18, the cooperative held a bake sale and taco-in-a-bag lunch at its headquarters in Fargo. Employees came feeling hungry and helpful, giving $865

in sales and donations. CCEC donated the items for lunch.

“Cass County Electric has strong roots in our communities. It’s in our DNA to support the communities we serve”, said Jocelyn Hovland, CCEC manager of communications. “This was our opportunity to exercise our cooperative values and rally together for one of our local nonprofit members.”

GiGi’s Playhouse Fargo is a CCEC member and opened its doors in September 2015. It is North Dakota’s first Down

Syndrome Achievement Center.

The Playhouse supports local and surrounding area families by offering free educational and therapeutic programs to those with Down syndrome from birth to adulthood.

The fire destroyed the Playhouse on May 11, 2021, but the losses are only partially covered. Millions of dollars are needed to get the organization operating to its fullest again, serving more than 180 families in the region. Fundraising efforts are underway across the area. Cordless electric lawnmowers make the cut

Cordless electric walk-behind lawnmowers certainly give more flexibility than their corded cousins, but how do they compare with gasoline-fueled lawnmowers?

According to Consumer Reports, cordless electric mowers offer cleaner and quieter running, as well as easy maintenance. Is a cordless electric model right for your lawn? Let’s take a look.

How cordless electric mowers work Conventional lawnmowers operate using a gasoline-fueled combustion engine. Cordless mowers, by contrast, use an electric motor powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The batteries used to power cordless mowers average between 36 and 120 volts.

Once the battery runs down, you plug it to recharge it. It generally takes between 3 to 6 hours to fully recharge the battery.

Comparing gas and electric mowers Battery-powered mowers have a number of advantages over gasoline models: • Easy to maintain. No engine maintenance — such as changing spark plugs, engine oil, and filters — is required.

• Safer. No flammable gasoline to store in your garage or shed.

• Environmentally friendly.

Electric mowers produce no carbon dioxide or other harmful emissions.

• Quieter operation. Electric mowers produce only 65 to 75 decibels of noise — similar to normal conversation.

Gasoline mowers produce 95 to 100 decibels — similar to a motorcycle.

Cordless electric mowers do have some potential downsides. Mowing time is limited to how long the CassCountyElectric.com

battery holds a charge — generally 30 to 60 minutes for most models.

If you have a larger lawn, it may be a good idea to invest in a second backup battery.

Electric mowers are generally not as powerful as gasoline models, making them less effective on thick, dense lawns or tall grass.

You can get around this issue by adjusting the blade higher and mowing more often.

Cordless electric mowers are typically more expensive than gasoline mowers, although costs are coming down. Cordless models generally cost between $200 and $450, although some higher-end models can cost as much as $600.

If you’re looking for a quieter, more convenient and cleaner way to care for your lawn, cordless electric mowers definitely make the cut.

2 pounds prepared fish Vegetable oil 3 eggs 3 cups flour 1 box Shore Lunch 2 teaspoons ground cumin 2 teaspoons ground coriander 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon red pepper powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

Preparation

In a bowl, combine Shore Lunch and all remaining seasonings and set aside. Dip the fish into egg wash, then dip/cover in flour, egg wash again, then cover in seasoned breading. Fry. Transfer the fish to a plate.

1/2 cup sour cream 1/3 cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice Zest from a lime 1 teaspoon garlic powder 2 teaspoons cumin

Preparation

Combine all ingredients.

Refrigerate.

4 cups cabbage, shredded (regular or purple or both) 1/2 cup cilantro, chopped 1 green onion, sliced 2 cloves garlic, minced

Putting it all together: Heat your preferred flavor of soft 6” tortilla shells in ungreased skillet or grill each side for 20-30 seconds. Top with fish, slaw and lime crema.

Optional toppings: Cotija cheese, avocado, siracha, chopped cilantro, lime wedges, pico de gallo or whatever gets your taste buds salsa-ing!

Spicy corn salad Ingredients

4 cups corn (about 5 ears or frozen or canned) 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 red bell pepper, chopped 1/2 small red onion, finely chopped 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped 6 green onions, chopped 1 jalapeño pepper, diced 4 tablespoons lime juice (about 2) 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons sour cream 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 1/2 cup cotija cheese, crumbled

Preparation

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add the corn, pepper, and onion and stir it around. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until the corn starts to char, which is why we’re using high

heat. If using frozen corn, you will need a couple minutes extra to get the right charred bits. Transfer the corn to a large bowl and let it cool for a couple minutes. To the same bowl, add the remaining ingredients. Stir everything together until well combined. Adjust lime juice and salt and pepper to taste. To serve, garnish with additional cheese and cilantro.

Surge protectors – the hero that protects your electronics No matter where you live, your home will experience power surges, and surprisingly, they are a common occurrence. Power surges can damage valuable electronics like TVs and computers, along with smaller, more sensitive devices like smartphones and tablets. To protect the devices you care about most, investing in a surge protector is vital and as a homeowner or renter, it’s your job to pick the surge protection that works best for your living situation.

Protection is important Surge protectors come in handy during summer storms, and help protect your devices from sudden power surges. A surge protector detects and diverts excess voltage to the ground wire before a surge can reach and harm your electronics. right surge protection, whether that be only for devices like your TV or computer, or purchasing a whole house surge protector. A whole house surge protector protects the devices in your home from voltage spikes and is professionally installed by your electrical box.

Another shield of defense to consider is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), which provides instant power during emergencies and power outages. Like a life jacket, a UPS provides safety – safety against other common power issues you might experience.
