As you drive around the area, you likely see numerous help wanted signs. Many businesses are struggling to find employees to run or grow their businesses.

According to Indeed.com, a job search website, there are 6,649 jobs available within 50 miles of Fargo.

In May, Cass and Barnes counties had an unemployment rate of 2.8%.

Cass County Electric is working with key stakeholders like the Chambers of Commerce, Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation, and other organizations to address the critical workforce shortage.

In late May, the Fueling Our Future (FOF) initiative brought together business leaders, educators,

North Dakota’s workforce shortage is not unique, as most states are dealing with workforce shortages.

One initiative supported by FOF is to build a Career Innovation Center (CIC). The CIC will offer high school students access to training in specific fields to earn a certificate or associate degree while in high school or shortly after that. The CIC will train students for high-demand careers and provide a path for students not only to learn a specific trade but to enter the workforce sooner than the traditional path of a two-year college or university.

Board meeting highlights The Cass County Electric Board of Directors met in person on June 29, 2021, and discussed the following topics: • The board held their annual reorganization meeting with all officers reelected to their positions for the upcoming year.

• Approved the June 2021 consent agenda of the regular board meeting consisting of minutes of the previous meeting, monthly department reports, director expense report, and the April Purchased Power Adjustment (PPA).

Driving the dialogue on grid reliability With grid challenges coming into focus, Minnkota leaders are working to chart a path forward Written by Ben Fladhammer, Minnkota Power Cooperative

Last summer, a heatwave gripped California’s electric grid and left much of the state sweltering through extended power outages.

When winter arrived, a deep freeze in Texas turned power and heat off for millions over four days, the effects of which extended into the Upper Midwest where rotating outages were needed to stabilize the grid.

In the wake of these outage events, Minnkota Power Cooperative leaders have been on the road and online discussing the importance of grid reliability and resiliency with the nation’s top regulators and policymakers, as well as local and regional stakeholders. As the electric utility sector continues to go through one of the most transformational periods in its

generation capacity comes from carbon-free sources such as wind and hydropower. Although Minnkota has added a significant amount of renewable energy over the last 15 years and has been recognized nationally as a leader in renewable energy development, coal remains a critical resource to ensure the reliability of the electric grid.

“Harsh winters in the Upper Midwest can and do severely limit the ability of renewables to operate for extended periods of time,” McLennan testified. “During the recent polar vortex events in 2014, 2019 and 2021, Minnkota received almost no production from our wind facilities for multiple days.

The event was driven by Minnkota member Cass County Electric Cooperative and facilitated by the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber. While North Dakota is looking for solutions to ensure its residents have 24/7 power, it is part of two multi-state grids where the decisions of other entities have enormous impacts. Minnkota participates in the MISO market, where renewables currently account for about 10% to 12% of the grid’s resources. Tulloh said challenges begin to emerge as that percentage increases.

Regan said the Biden administration has a “positive viewpoint” of carbon capture technology, and that his role is to support the president’s goals to reduce emissions.

“The creative ingenuity in terms of the thinking around carbon management and reduction, I think, has been really refreshing,” Regan said during his visit.

“There’s no doubt there’s huge potential,” he said of carbon capture. “And right here in North Dakota we’re seeing leadership.”

Commitment to Community - RDFC Grant Cass County Electric Cooperative (CCEC) has joined the Rural Development Finance Corporation (RDFC) to support rural fire and rescue districts in the CCEC service area, distributing a total of $4,000 to four programs.

“One of Cass County Electric Cooperative’s core principles is Concern for Community, and there are no better examples of community protectors than our rural fire volunteers,” said Paul Matthys, CCEC vice president of member services, “These grants are our way of ensuring their services remain safe and reliable.”

CCEC is a member of the RDFC, a nonprofit finance and development entity.

Air purifiers aid in protections against a dirty reality Every homeowner is susceptible to indoor toxins like dust, smoke, odors, pollen, and smoke. Once these tiny particles are floating in the air, they can stay there for hours. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air quality can be five times as polluted as outdoor air. That’s a dirty reality, but investing in an air purifier could benefit your health and improve your indoor air quality.

Air purifiers usually consist of a filter or multiple filters and a fan that sucks in and circulates air. As air moves through the filter, pollutants and particles are captured, and the clean air is pushed back out into the living space.

Most household air purifiers contain high-efficiency particulate air HEPA filters. These filters meet the Department of Energy’s standard and can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any airborne particles circulating in your home environment.

Removing these pollutants can lead to several immediate and long-term benefits. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 12 people has asthma. Air purifiers aid in relieving symptoms of asthma. Other benefits include eliminating harmful chemicals, neutralizing

unpleasant odors, improving sleep.

One of the most asked questions is if it helps with reducing the common cold. The short answer is yes.

Airborne diseases such as the common cold and flu are spread through tiny pathogens floating around.

When one family member catches the flu, it’s not uncommon for the rest of the family to get sick as well.

This happens because everyone is breathing the same air that’s infected with bacteria and viruses.

Air purifiers with HEPA filters capture these bacteria and viruses. When you remove the cause of airborne diseases, you safeguard yourself and your family from them.

Whether you have a pet, a weakened immune system, or allergies, an air purifier might be worth the investment. Do your research and find what type of air purifier would fit your needs, and remember they are not an “end-all” solution.

e 2021 Annual Meeting: Your Power - For Life Cass County Electric Cooperative’s 83rd Annual Meeting of the members was held on June 24, 2021, at the Delta by Marriott in Fargo. More than 300 members and guests attended the meeting.

All cooperative members had the opportunity to vote for directors either in person or in advance by a mail-in absentee ballot. In total, 405 votes were cast.

Due to the retirement of former director John Froelich, as well as the board appointments of Marcy Svenningsen to District 1 and Terry Kraft (2020 director candidate) to the vacated Director At-large position, there were five director elections held. Congrats to the

winners of the election.

Directors serve in three-year terms, and the election results are as follows: District 1 - Marcy Svenningsen District 2 - Doug Anderson District 3 - Sid Berg District 5(1) - Wendy Loucks District At-large - Terry Kraft President/CEO Marshal Albright presented the future of power supply and explained some of the struggles the energy industry is facing.

safety Selecting the right tree and right location for planting The right tree planted in the right place can add natural beauty to any landscape, but a tree in the wrong place can become expensive to maintain and even dangerous. Cass County Electric Cooperative encourages everyone to learn more about the benefits of tree planting and selecting the perfect tree for the right place in your yard.

When considering placement, select a planting location that will not interfere with utility lines both in the air and underground.

Tree branches can interfere with overhead power lines, and roots can do the same with underground utilities.

Power outages or interruptions occur when trees and branches come into contact with overhead lines. Electrical arcing and sparking from a wire to a nearby branch can cause fires.

Tall growing trees with a mature height of greater than 40 feet should be planted at least 50 feet away from lines to avoid future pruning. A mature height of less than 25 feet is recommended if planting near lines. Keep in mind, trees should never be planted directly under power lines, near poles, or too close to electrical equipment.

distance from the wires. If you have trees that are growing into power lines, contact your electric provider.

Never try to prune them yourself.

Before the tree planting begins, make sure to call 811. The 811 “Call Before You Dig” campaign is a free service that locates and marks your public underground utilities.

Make sure to call a few work days in advance of any digging project to give ample time for a professional to locate these utilities. There are different colors of paint and flags that mark each underground utility: electrical, gas, water, cable, and telephone lines, which can all be found beneath the earth.

The earth is a wonderful source of natural heat, so why not harness that warmth for your rural home and shops? Geothermal systems (also known as ground-source heat pumps) are an excellent choice for heating farm structures, as they often require a little extra land area.

Getting looped in on geothermal may be the right move for you if: You want the cleanest, most energy-efficient option for heating and cooling.

You have one or two large buildings that require climate control.

You live on land with some space flexibility – and maybe a water source nearby.

If you resonate with one or two of these statements, it’s time to evaluate geothermal heating options.

A geothermal heat pump system consists of loops of special plastic tubing installed underground, through which an environmentally friendly, biodegradable antifreeze flows with the help an electrically powered pump inside your home or shop. Heat energy naturally flows from a warmer place to a cooler place, so during the heating season, the earth transfers its heat to the cooler solution in the tubing. That warmth is brought to the home or building by the pump and released.

The opposite happens for cooling in the summer.

GEOTHERMAL SYSTEMS COME IN TWO VARIETIES: Closed-Loop

Open-Loop

Closed-loop horizontal installation is the best value for new construction residential applications, especially when sufficient land is available. It requires trenches at least four feet deep.

Closed-loop vertical installation is a better choice for larger shops and commercial buildings where land is limited and soil is too shallow for horizontal loops. Vertical loops cost more, but use less area.

Closed-loop water installation is an economical option for sites near a pond or lake. An underground supply line runs from the building to the water and coils into circles at least eight feet under the surface.

Open-loop installation uses well water or pond/lake water as a heat exchange fluid that flows directly through the geothermal pump system, and then returns to the ground through a well. This installation is only practical with a large supply of water and needs to meet all groundwater regulations.

Ingredients

Ingredients

1 tablespoon oil 3 pounds thinly sliced ribeye steaks 1 green pepper, sliced 1 onion, sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 slices provolone cheese 4 hoagie rolls or French baguettes Butter Salt and pepper

Preparation

Preheat your gas griddle over medium heat until it is preheated. Butter your buns and give them a quick toast. On one half of the griddle, put down some butter and the onions and peppers, and on the other half throw down some oil. Let it preheat, but not quite smoking, and then put the beef on. Salt and pepper the beef according to your preferences, continue to sauté and season until the meat and vegetables are completely cooked. Top with cheese, cover with a dome and turn OFF the griddle. The residual heat will melt the cheese. Load up your buns with cheese-covered ribeye, top with peppers and onions.

1 bag frozen fries 1/2 cup oil 3 teaspoons seasoning salt

Preparation

Preheat your griddle over medium-low heat for 15-20 minutes. Lay down a generous layer of oil on the griddle. Put the fries down in a single layer by grabbing handfuls and sprinkling the fries onto the griddle so they are evenly distributed in a single layer and cover. Do not flip them until they are brown. Repeat until all sides are crispy.

If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen and start your grill. By taking your meals outside, keep the heat out of the house and use less energy trying to keep it cool.

- Avoid a longer than necessary warm-up time by not turning the grill until the food is fully prepped and ready to be cooked.

- Marinate meat in advance and cook it at a lower temperature to help it retain moisture and cook more efficiently.
