editorial Reflection and 2020 Vision

As we close out 2019, we can reflect on the good year we had at the cooperative. From a financial perspective, we anticipate higher than budgeted energy sales and revenue.

We are projecting that by year-end, we will have added more than 1,400 new accounts, bring us to 52,000 total accounts, which is a record number of accounts and solid consumer-member growth.

Our wholesale power cost from Minnkota Power Cooperative and retail electric rates look to remain stable over the next couple of years, barring any unforeseen power plant problems, significant storms, or regulatory issues.

Operating and fixed costs for the cooperative continue to climb.

However, growth in member accounts and energy sales historically supplies enough revenue growth, avoiding the need for rate increases to support the increase in expenses. In 2020, we expect operating and fixed costs to increase by nearly 4 percent. Overall, the financial health of the cooperative

Our power reliability continued to deliver strong results in 2019. Our power reliability for 2019 through November is above 99.99 percent available. Our engineering and operations teams do a fantastic job maintaining the distribution system. They are implementing new technologies to enhance our “best in class” reliability numbers. When there is an outage, our crews work quickly and safely to restore power. For extensive outages, we use social media to update our members on the status of an outage, so make sure to follow us on Facebook to stay up-to-date on all the latest news from the Cooperative.

In 2019, we added a second drone to our fleet. This new drone has a camera with infrared (IR) sensing technology allowing our maintenance crews to detect hot spots on our power lines and other electrical equipment.

Inspecting our system with IR technology helps us identify problems and repair them before they cause an outage. In 2020, we will be completing a remote switching project for all of our substations by using a system called SCADA. Once complete this system will aid in reducing the length of outage time.

CO-OP YOUTH TOUR

November The Cass County Electric Board of Directors met on November 26, 2019 and discussed the following topics: • Approved the November 2019 consent agenda of the regular board meeting consisting of: minutes of the previous meeting, monthly department reports, board compensation schedule, and the October Purchased Power Adjustment (PPA).

• President/CEO Marshal Albright gave the President’s Report; the Greater FM EDC Valley Prosperity Partnership events, Minnkota Manager’s meeting update, and the 2020 Business Plan review.

• Accepted the October 2019 financial report.

• Approved extending and reducing our line of credit from $5M to $2M with CoBank.

• Received board reports from Minnkota Power Cooperative, Square Butte Electric Cooperative, and NDAREC. • Received presentations from representatives of Eide Bailly for the 2019 financial audit and the 2020 information technology cyber security scope of work.

• Moved to approve the Letter of Engagement for the 2019 financial audit, with revisions.

• Moved to approve the 2020 information technology cyber security scope of work.

Hoping to stand out in a crowded beverage market, some North Dakota entrepreneurs are betting on the superpowers of a tiny, tart, deep purple berry.

Water infused with these tiny superheroes packs a big punch.

Aronia berries are the not-so-secret ingredient in Ax-water, a beverage founded in Fargo. The berry’s health benefits are still largely unknown to consumers, but Ax-water is working to change that.

The bottled water is infused with aronia berries, commonly known as black chokeberries (not to be confused with chokecherries). Interest in the berry has grown as the general public gains more understanding of how antioxidants may prevent or delay some types of cell damage.

Together, they developed a beverage recipe that harnessed the power of the berry. They launched Ax-water in the spring of 2017 with Gronwold as chief executive officer.

The company recently launched its latest beverage flavor: blueberry.

Aronia: Celebrating a Superfruit Aronia is a perennial, woody shrub native to North America that is related to other edible and ornamental crops such as apples, plums, roses and almonds.

biosystems engineer, learned about aronia from his uncle, who grew the shrubs in Nebraska. Johnson planted his own in 2012 and began to explore different ways to use the berries. He shared his passion for the superfruit with Wade Gronwold, an athletic trainer, who became an

The berry has been popular in Eastern Europe, where for generations has been used for medicinal purposes. In the U.S., the market is still relatively small but growing. Registered aronia production increased from 65 acres in 2010 to 1,819 acres in 2017, according to the USDA. In North Dakota, there are about 70 acres registered, with 90 acres known to be planted.

These berries pack a powerful punch! Aronia berries contain tons of vitamins and minerals, including zinc, magnesium, iron, and vitamins C, B, and K. Compared to other fruits, aronia berries have the highest level of antioxidants, which are a chemical compound that protects your body’s cells from damaging effects of oxidation. Antioxidants are a natural anti-aging promotor and are believed to protect against cancer and heart disease. From the inside of your body to the appearance of your skin, fruits with high levels of antioxidants are incredibly beneficial.

Greg Nelson, an aronia grower and investor for Ax-water, planted the first shrubs on his farm near Amenia, North Dakota, in 2014. One of his dad’s friends told him that drinking aronia juice would reduce inflammation. He now grows about 33,000 bushes at Nelson Aronia Farms.

“Once consumers realize how healthy it is, demand will keep growing,” he says.

The shrub is well-situated for the growing season in the upper Midwest. The plants are resistant to drought, insects, and disease – and tolerate cold, Nelson says.

To bring awareness to the superberry, Nelson and his son hosted

As they do so, they are finding their place in a growing niche within the beverage market: functional water.

This market is expected to reach more than $160 billion by 2024, according to market trends.

Functional water is defined as non-alcoholic beverages that are similar to water but have additional ingredients that increase functional benefits. Most of these beverages are sugar-free or contain natural sweeteners and have no or lowcalorie content.

At 30 calories a serving, Ax-water has less sugar and calories than orange juice and packs in all the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of the aronia berry into each bottle.

Early on, the beverage captured the attention of international enthusiasts. In 2017, the company took home second-place award for Best Functional Beverage at the 2017 Zenith Bottle Water Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

“It’s a natural choice for people who understand health and wellness,” Johnson says. the inaugural Aronia Berry Harvest Festival this fall. Vendors and artisans from the region were invited to show off the many uses of the berry: from cheesecakes to beer. The raw berry is tart and astringent, qualities that explain why it’s commonly called a chokeberry. Mixing the fruit with other foods makes them more palpable. The berries are often juiced, dried, or turned into products like jellies and wine.

For Ax-water, the berries are sent to a processing plant in Wisconsin that juices the berries. Other ingredients are then added to the juice concentrate at a bottling plant on the East Coast.

A Beverage for Everyone Over the past two years, the owners of Ax-water have been simultaneously marketing their product and promoting the versatility and health benefits of aronia berries.

“It tastes good and adds nutritional value,” Gronwold said. “Ax-water is a beverage for everyone, from kids to grandparents.”

Ax-water is available at local grocery stores and some convenience stores. While Ax-water can be enjoyed by the general population, the company has found success in marketing it to high-level sports teams and fitness experts. The beverage is consumed by the Minnesota Wild and University of North Dakota hockey teams.

MEET DIRECTOR HOFF District: 6 Director Kalvin Hoff joined the cooperative family in April 2019 as the newest member of the Cass County Electric Cooperative’s board of directors. Though Hoff is recent to the cooperative family, he understands the cooperative values.

Hoff is your typical family man. He is married to his successful wife, Caitlin, and has three children, ages seven to two, Hudson, Henley, and Cabe. Every parent understands the morning chaos and the importance of starting each day with breakfast to fuel you up and ground you for the day.

Every morning the smell of freshly cooked eggs and toast fills the Hoff household. A tradition of hot breakfast was programmed in Hoff since he was a little boy. Growing up on a farm in Richardton, North Dakota, Director Hoff’s mom would ensure her family ate something before heading out the door; it was non-negotiable. “She was relentless when it came to eating breakfast,” Hoff said with a laugh. “Now, it’s something I can’t start my day without.” If the mornings are crazy getting the kids ready, Hoff says, at

the very least, he will have a bowl of cereal.

Early in Hoff’s life, his parents molded him with a firm foundation of support. Beginning with teaching him the values of a thrifty hardworking farmer, instilling the drive to succeed in school, and, most importantly, learning you can not be good at everything. Hoff tried his hand at sports but came to realize he was a better mathlete than an athlete. Taking after his parents, who owned the farm and a business in town, Hoff’s parents sparked an entrepreneurial spirit inside of him.

In 2016, Hoff started Amber Waves Integration. He designs automated systems for grain processing plants, improving the process of taking in the grain from the farmer and loading it for market, eventually processing the grain into a food product. Hoff also works with his sister to provide the electrical engineering expertise she needs for her grain cleaning company.

Keeping with the tradition of family support, his brother contracts on the mechanical engineering portion of the company.

Hoff says his family is unique because of the business relationships that they have built with each other.

With his background in electrical engineering and a passion for the energy industry, he knew when the District 6 board position opened up, he had to go for it. Hoff says he is absorbing as much information as possible and is working to keep Cass County Electric members’ energy reliable and affordable.

SUMMARY OF BYLAW CHANGES The Cass County Electric Cooperative Board approved changes to the Cooperative’s bylaws, effective October 29, 2019. A summary of the changes is provided below. The bylaws are available on the Cooperative’s website at CassCountyElectric.com.

The bylaws were amended to address readability, consistency, typographical and grammatical errors. In addition, the following substantive changes were made: 1. Amendments allow landlords the ability to submit a membership application to the Cooperative on behalf of a tenant.

2. Amendments provided additional guidance and procedures to facilitate absentee or electronic balloting.

3. Amendments provide for the Board to initiate Director Vacancy and replacement efforts before the date of a Director’s actual resignation.

4. Amendments reduced the required signatures on a Petition for Director Removal from ten percent of the membership to five percent. In order to be valid, all signatures must be obtained within 60 days of the Director Removal Petition date.

5. Amendments specifically allow the Cooperative to use a Member’s Capital Credit payments to offset a Member’s outstanding account balance.

6. Amendments provide the ability, but not requirement, of Cooperative staff to advise a Director candidate if their election petition does not conform with Cooperative rules and requirements.

7. Amendments provide that the Credentialing Committee will be made up of all Directors who are not running for reelection.

8. Amendments streamlined timeframes for the Director election process, so Directors have adequate time for determination of qualifications and public identification of candidates. Further amendments set timelines to address situations where there are no qualified nominees for positions and others are added later in the process.

9. Amendments removed the requirement that a Director needed Board approval to participate remotely.

10. Amendments provide that reimbursement for Director participation in Cooperative or community related events must be preapproved by the Board at established rates.

11. The Bylaws provide the Cooperative the discretion to retire small capital credit accounts. Amendments changed the definition of Small Capital Accounts from $250 or less to $500 or less.

12. Amendments clarified that the standard of conduct applicable to Directors also applied in their roles representing the Cooperative on other related boards.

13. Amendments to the indemnification requirement clarified that there could be no double recovery from the Cooperative if a claimant received other insurance proceeds or recovery from any other party.

14. Amendments provided for an approval process for EFTs much like the Cooperative requires with multiple signers on checks.

15. Amendment provides for additional opportunities to notify members of Bylaw changes, including by email, published in the Highline Notes or in a newsletter.

Aronia Berry Fruit Salad Ingredients 1 c. Plain yogurt ½ c. Apple juice 1 c. Ice cubes 1 c. Aronia berries Preparation In a blender mix the plain yogurt, apple juice, ice cubes, berries, and banana, blend on high for 30 sec to 1 minute and enjoy!

Aronia Berry Black Bean Salsa Ingredients 4 c. Chopped tomatoes (fresh or canned) 2 cans Black beans (drained and rinsed) 1 large onion 2/3 c. Chopped green chilis Combination of peppers 1 Bunch cilantro 3 c. Aronia berries (frozen) Preparation Combine the following in a very large bowl: 4 cups chopped tomatoes-include the juice (fresh or canned), two 15 oz cans of black beans, 1 large onion, diced 3/4 cup chopped green chilis (if canned, include the juice), and combination of peppers. After combined, add 1 bunch of finely chopped cilantro and 3 cups of Aronia berries (frozen). Chill 2-3 hours to allow flavors to mingle. Serve with your favorite tortilla chips. This salsa will be a fresh-tasting, chunky, bruschetta type salsa.

Aronia Berry Fruit Salad Ingredients 2-3 c. Fresh pineapple (cut up) 2 c. Fresh strawberries (halved) 1-2 c. Frozen Aronia berries (thawed or fresh) 1/4 c. Mayonnaise 3 Tbsp. Sugar 1 Tbsp. White vinegar 2 tsp. Poppy seeds Preparation Thaw the Aronia berries if frozen. Cut up and combine all fruit into a bowl. Whisk together the remaining 4 ingredients to make the dressing. Just before serving, pour dressing over fruit and toss to coat the fruit. Serve. You may double the dressing for a larger amount of fruit.

Aronia Berry Black Bean Salsa Ingredients 8-10 Slices sourdough or challah bread 3-4 oz. Cream cheese (cut in cubes) 1-1/2 c. Aronia berries 6 Eggs XL beaten 1-1/4 c. Milk 1/4 c. Maple syrup 1/4 c. Butter (melted) Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Generously coat a 9x9x2 baking dish with butter or non-stick spray. Place 1/2 the bread cubes in the dish. Sprinkle cream cheese cubes and 3/4 cup of the Aronia berries over the bread.

Top with remaining cubes and Aronia berries. In a bowl, combine eggs, milk, maple syrup and butter.

Pour over bread mixture. Bake until a knife inserted in center comes out clean, about 1 hour, covering with foil if edges brown too quickly.

• Follow forecasts and be prepared when venturing outside. Major winter storms are often followed by extremely cold conditions.

A little forethought and attention to detail will help to ensure that you and your family stay warm, dry, and safe this winter, no matter what the weather is outside.

On our system alone, we operate and manage over 9,800 pad mount transformers, which step down high voltage to lower voltage that is safe to use in your home.
