February The Cass County Electric Board of Directors met on February 25, 2020 and discussed the following topics: • Approved the February 2020 consent agenda of the regular board meeting consisting of minutes of the previous meeting, monthly department reports, board compensation schedule, report on small capital credits retired to terminated members in 2019, plant damage report for 2019, and the January Purchased Power Adjustment (PPA).

• President/CEO Marshal Albright gave the president’s report, reporting on meetings attended on power supply, renewables and the cost of power distribution; and gave an update on the ongoing projects of the Valley Prosperity Partnership.

• Accepted the January 2020 financial report.

• Moved to approve the credentials committee report noting that five candidates are approved to run for the 2020 director election at the Annual Meeting.

• Moved to approve the use of absentee ballots for the 2020 Director Election at the Annual Meeting.

• Received the Minnkota Power Cooperative board meeting report.

• Reviewed plans for potential NDAREC facility improvements along with the construction of a Lineworker Training Center.

• Moved to accept the 2019 financial audit as prepared and presented by Eide Bailly, LLP. • Approved the February 2020 estate capital credit payments.

Cass County Electric Cooperative knows that our

consumer-members need reliable power. That’s why we are using everything from drones to mobile apps to advanced meter technology, to keep the lights on for the more than 52,000 accounts we serve every day.

In 2018, Cass County Electric was number one in the nation in terms of reliability among cooperatives of the same size. Cass County Electric Cooperative CEO, Marshal Albright, says that’s no coincidence.

“We focus on and invest in our power distribution system, making sure that it’s designed so when there’s an outage, we can get the power restored as quickly and as safely as we can,” said Albright.

Power outages happen, and it’s impossible to prevent every single one. That’s why Cass County Electric has some substations equipped with automated switches so that an outage can

be managed from our power control center and back-fed from a different direction.

“In the past, lineworkers had to go out and troubleshoot an outage manually, checking the system pole by pole. Today, technology helps us locate the issue so we can restore power safer and faster,” said Albright.

Cass County Electric also utilizes automated switches for critical members such as some of the hospitals we serve. These switches work on a two-way power feed so that if power is disrupted on one, the power is immediately switched to the other, minimizing the outage time to a flicker.

Smart switches are just one technological advancement that Cass County Electric is using to keep our power reliable. We focus on maintaining the electric grid to provide maximum reliability and recently added another UAV (drone) to our fleet to inspect overhead power lines and other

electrical equipment. When partnered with advanced metering infrastructure for outage detection and our dedicated line crew, whose passion is safety, it’s easy to see why reliability is so vital to the cooperative.

If all of that isn’t enough to make you appreciate Cass County Electric’s investment in reliability, the capital credits that the company offers our members should be. Because Cass County Electric is a cooperative, we pay back money to our consumermembers over time. This year alone, Cass County Electric will return $2 million to our consumer-members. And, with the cooperative not having to raise rates operations costs in over a decade, more returns are sure to follow.

director Spotlight Director: Sid Berg

Outside the role of being a Cass County Electric Cooperative director, you will find Sid Berg participating in one of his many hobbies. Berg, like most North Dakotans, enjoys the outdoors. He will take any chance he can get to load the boat, pack the rods and bait, and head to the lake.

Berg has many memories on the lake, but one of his favorites is taking his grandsons fishing. Early one Sunday morning, Berg collected his grandsons and headed out. Within five minutes after casting the lines, they were reeling in fish left and right.

“Boom. Boom. Boom. Liam had fish in the livewell, and of course, he was all smiley,” said Berg. “We had fun!”

The clouds rolled in and shortly after they got to the landing, raindrops started pouring from the sky. The rain could have easily washed the smiles off their faces, but they kept grinning ear to ear.

Everyone has at least one friend

they can count on to do anything and everything. For Berg that was Gary Garrett. They would hunt, fish, and split wood together. One day Garrett shared his idea of building a smokehouse together, and Berg was all in. A few days later, Berg received the news that Garrett had a massive heart attack and passed away.

“We were tighter than brothers, it tore my heart apart,” said Berg.

Keeping Garrett’s dream alive, Berg built the smokehouse by himself. “It’s a sentimental smokehouse,” Berg said as he remembered his good friend. The smokehouse provides many opportunities for tasty meals.

Berg does it all - ring sausage, pepper sticks, breakfast sausage, dried venison, and smoked turkeys.

Although Berg does not have an official college degree, he walks in shoes laced with countless experiences. He served in the Army National Guard for 20 years.

equipment across rivers to serving as Battalion Communications Chief and educating incoming officers on how to be a proper officer before they received the title. Berg said his biggest takeaway from serving was respect for our country and the flag.

“When you go through that training and see what veterans went through and did, you have to have respect for them and appreciate what they did,” Berg said.

When you dive to the core, the heart of who Berg truly is – he is a people person. “I’m not in it for myself, I am in it for the people,” Berg said. After serving in the Army National Guard for 20 years and building a career at Red River Telephone Cooperative for almost 36 years, Berg has worked with numerous people across the utility industry.

As a Cass County Electric director, he said, “I try and make things better for the communities, and members. My goal is to make it as good as it can be.”

We are excited to welcome two new faces to our cooperative family. Emily Thompson, corporate administrative assistant, graduated from University of North Dakota in 2016 with a degree in criminal justice.

In March, Michelle Dowell accepted the member accounts representative position. For the past 12 years, Dowell worked for West Fargo Public Schools as a paraprofessional.

All-of-the-Above Energy Strategy At Cass County Electric Cooperative, we support an “All-of-the-Above” approach to our generation resources. Renewable resources are an essential piece of our generation mix (wind energy specifically, 34 percent of our generation capacity comes from wind energy generated from ND wind farms). Still, they are only a piece of the puzzle. Our baseload ND lignite coal generation remains a vital resource to ensure that we meet our mission “to serve our members’ energy needs with affordable and reliable electricity.” There are many times throughout the year when the wind does not blow, or temperatures become too cold for wind turbines

to operate. This is when baseload 24/7 generation resources, like ND lignite coal, ensure your lights and heat stay on.

Inf inity Renewable Energy Program Your energy. Your way.

Environmental Stewardship We have a program to work with your renewable energy goals. Through the Infinity Renewable Energy program, you can decide how much of the electricity you purchase is generated by renewable resources. By enrolling in this program, you can designate the percentage of the electric use you would like to be derived from renewable energy. Cass County Electric will allocate the appropriate amount of renewable energy through the program and indicate your purchases on your monthly bill. The record of your purchase and proof it was reserved for your account is done through a renewable energy credit (REC).

Renewable Energy Credit Measurement A REC verifies that electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource and was integrated into the electric grid. All wind RECs purchased

through the Infinity program are certified by the Midwest Renewable Energy Tracking System. This certification ensures that the RECs are only used once. When you determine the amount of renewable energy your business would like to purchase, an equivalent number of RECs will be retired on your behalf.

Additional costs are incurred to purchase renewable energy and specifically to designate how this energy is credited and used. Contact Cass County Electric’s energy management team for current pricing options. Please email us at info@kwh.com to find out more!

No contracts are required. The only stipulation is you are a consumer-member of Cass County Electric Cooperative. The Infinity Renewable Energy Program has a designated energy rate that will be included on your monthly bill.

Nacho Cheese Sauce, Steve Sjoberg Ingredients 8 oz. extra-sharp cheddar cheese 4 oz. pepper jack cheese 1 ½ Tbsp. cornstarch 12 oz. evaporated milk 2 tsp. hot sauce Preparation In a medium, heavy-bottom saucepan set over low heat, combine cheese and cornstarch. Add evaporated milk and hot sauce and continuously whisk until cheese melts. Continue whisking about 5 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and has thickened. If the cheese has thickened too much, add additional evaporated milk. Serve immediately.

Burritos, JoAnn Moody Ingredients 1 pkg. flour tortillas 1 can chili without beans 1 can nacho cheese soup 4 oz. can green chili peppers, chopped 8 oz. colby cheese, grated 2 lb. ground beef Diced onions 1 pkg. burrito seasoning Preparation Mix green chili peppers, onions, chili, and cheese soup in a saucepan. Heat. Brown ground beef. Drain. Add burrito seasoning and ¼ cup water. Put enough chili mix in the beef to moisten. Place meat mixture inside a tortilla. Sprinkle with grated colby cheese and roll up. Place in baking pan. Cover with the rest of the chili mix and some grated cheese. Heat in oven at 350° F until cheese melts or is soft.

Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers, Brenton Nesemeier Ingredients 12 jalapeño peppers, approximately 3-4” long 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 8 oz. cheddar cheese ½ tsp. onion powder ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. pepper 12 slices bacon, do not use thick-cut Cooking spray Preparation Preheat the oven to 400° F. Line a sheet pan with foil and coat it with cooking spray. Cut the jalapeños in half lengthwise and use a spoon to scoop out the seeds and ribs. In a medium bowl, mix the cream cheese, cheddar cheese, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Fill each jalapeño half with the cheese mixture. Cut the slices of bacon in half crosswise and wrap each pepper half in a slice of bacon, using a toothpick to secure the bacon. Arrange the peppers on the baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until bacon is crispy and browned. Serve immediately.

Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers, Jason Weimer Ingredients 6 lg. fresh jalapeño peppers, halved, seeded ½ cup Spicy Jalapeño Cream Cheese spread ¼ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese 12 slices bacon ¼ tsp. chili powder ¼ tsp. cumin Preparation Heat oven to 425° F. Combine cheeses; spoon into pepper halves. Wrap with bacon, overlapping edges as necessary. Place filled sides up, in shallow foil-lined pan. Bake 17-20 minutes or until bacon is done. Cool slightly before removing from pan to serve.
