editorial Cold shows need for Project Tundra

Mac McLennan, president and CEO of Minnkota Power Cooperative all of the Upper Midwest’s energy came from a combination of coal, natural gas, and nuclear power.

This is not a new phenomenon.

Routinely, subzero temperatures can limit the ability for wind and solar to produce energy for homes and businesses when they need it most.

For Minnkota Power Cooperative and its member cooperatives in eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, coal was the primary reason the lights (and everything else) stayed on.

When temperatures across the region dropped to 30 below zero in mid-January, most of us hurried indoors, turned up the heat and flipped on our computers and TVs for entertainment. There likely wasn’t a second thought as to where the electricity powering our region was coming from during those bitterly cold days.

As demand for electricity increased, there were stretches when almost

Coal is a low-cost and reliable resource, but it is challenged in today’s world as society focuses on making significant reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. That’s why Minnkota is pursuing Project Tundra – a major initiative to build the world’s largest carbon capture facility right here in North Dakota.

The project aims to transform our largest coal unit into a near-zero carbon emissions resource using state-of-the-art technology. The CO2 removed by Project Tundra

would be returned to the land it came from. Directly under the coal mine that provides fuel to the power plant, there is a deep geologic rock formation more than one mile below the surface where it is safe to store the CO2. If we’re successful, we will remove an amount of CO2 equivalent to permanently taking 600,000 gasoline-fueled vehicles off the road. More importantly, Project Tundra could be used as a blueprint by utilities in the United States and countries around the world that plan to continue using coal as a resource. The project is currently in the advanced engineering and design phase with a goal to begin construction within the next few years.

Our nation is striving toward a cleaner electric grid, but that doesn’t mean we have to shut down all fossil fuel generators and depend solely on wind and solar facilities. In our region, that simply won’t work.

The stakes are too high. When it’s 30 below zero, we need electricity so reliable that we don’t have to think twice about it.

In North Dakota and Minnesota, we can’t slow down when it’s 30 below. Our electricity can’t, either. That’s why we’re all in on all-of-the-above energy.

Board Meeting Highlights January The Cass County Electric Board of Directors met on January 24, 2020, and discussed the following topics: • Approved the January 2020 consent agenda of the regular board meeting consisting of minutes of the previous meeting, monthly department reports, board compensation schedule, 2019 director expense report and the December Purchased Power Adjustment (PPA).

• President/CEO Marshal Albright gave the president’s report, reporting on a conference he attended; update from the NDAREC Manager’s Meeting; and updates from various area solar projects.

• Accepted the December 2019 financial report.

• Moved to approve the transfer of $1.4M from non-operating margins to an unallocated reserve account.

• Received the 2019 safety report and the 2020 safety training plan.

• Received board report from NDAREC regular board meeting, and Annual Meeting.

• Received an update on Electric Vehicles and Electric Vehicle chargers.

• Received a report on the year-end 2019 system reliability indices.

• Moved to approve the payment of $2M in capital credit retirements for 2019.

Sawyer Anderson is only 10 and has already experienced a valuable life lesson: Kids (and cookies) can change the world in big ways.

Over the past two years, the fifthgrader at Oak Grove Lutheran School has helped to raise enough money to build 35 wells for waterscarce villages in Africa. In addition, she wrote and illustrated a book about her efforts and now shares that story through presentations.

Sawyer was inspired to help kids a half world away when her dad, Mark Anderson, took a mission trip to the south-central African country of Zambia. He came back with stories about children who were injured or worse as they walked long distances to access water.

Social media posts (with an assist from dad) helped Sawyer bring attention to Brian’s story and more donations flowed in. Then she decided to design and make a chitenge bag to auction off at a charity event for Wellspring.

Chitenge are typically skirts made from colorful African wax fabric, with smaller pieces and scraps used for other accessories in parts of Africa.

The bag sold for more than $6,000.

“I was very much like . . . wow,” Sawyer says. “It was crazy.”

That success motivated her to invite others into her fundraising circle.

She asked one of the pastors at her church, Hope Lutheran in Fargo, whether kids at the church could help design and sell additional chitenge bags. More than 100 volunteers partnered to make and sell these Bags of Hope for $50 a piece – the amount it would take to provide one person with clean water for life.

than $26,000 for clean water.

But the project kept multiplying in impact. Some people bought more chitenge bags than they needed and asked Sawyer to find someone who could use them. After some research, she decided to give the bags to the Jeremiah Program, which helps single mothers finish college and find employment.

This past summer, Sawyer published “Water Works,” which she wrote and illustrated. All of the proceeds from the book, which sells for $10, support Wellspring and World Vision.

While that decision was meant to benefit participants in the Jeremiah Program, it also helped Sawyer expand her ability to raise awareness about the lack of clean water around the world.

In the book, Sawyer tells the story of Brian but softens it with details designed to be more friendly for young readers. She also tells a gentler version of the story of Maria, who was blinded by a venomous snake while gathering water from a shallow well. Her 2-year-old daughter guided her back to their village.

After meeting Sawyer, the Jeremiah Project’s development director encouraged the elementary student to write a book about her experiences.

Since she started her philanthropic endeavor, Sawyer has given more than 90 presentations to organizations, schools, businesses and church groups.

So, she did.

Earlier this year “Water Works” was distributed to 1,000 schools in Zambia through World Vision. The book is also being translated into Vietnamese and will be published in Vietnam.

“None of us could imagine where this all would lead,” says Sawyer’s dad, Mark. And that may be the point.

As Sawyer points out, her book doesn’t really end. The last words of the book are: “I guess a kid can make a difference.” That’s as much a challenge as it is a statement.

According to the metropolitan profile commissioned by the Fargo-Moorhead Metropolitan Council of Governments, the metro area’s population is projected to reach more than 300,000 in 2030.

The forerunner of the GFMEDC was formed in 1946 and has gone through two other major evolutions to become the regional organization it is today.

going on at the GFMEDC include 1. A new microloan program that has been developed by the GFMEDC’s Growth Initiative Fund. This program will provide important funding to early-stage companies. The goal for 2020 is to complete six microloans.

2. Fueling our Future is a partnership with the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce. This partnership will address issues such as document ready sites for development, career workforce academies, regional ag-tech business accelerator, and the Campus FM initiative to launch college students’ careers.

3. The Valley Prosperity Partnership is a partnership with the Grand Forks EDC and Red River Valley business leadership, which is focused on state-level public policy to support economic growth.

Raso said, “At the GFMEDC, we provide direction to primary sector companies with an eye on their key issues – workforce development support, public policy, serve as a concierge related to specific issues and or growth opportunities that will add jobs, capital investment, and additional real estate in the region.”

As a kid, I grew up on a farm that was served by Cass County Electric Cooperative. Later in life, I moved into Cass County Electric’s service territory because I knew I wanted to serve the members and the cooperative. I believe my past and present work experience will provide valuable input for the cooperative and its members. I want to keep Cass County Electric progressively moving forward, so all members are proud. I will continue to work with fellow directors to keep your cooperative financially healthy, retain the cooperatives’ reliability and ensure topics like affordable rates are at the forefront of the conversation. Thank you for your trust.

I believe that it is important to be an active participant in my community, not only in my occupations but using my abilities to serve others. My rural background and experience in business give me a unique perspective that allows me to represent all the members of the cooperative proactively and fairly.

I am committed to dedicating the time necessary to be informed and educated about the issues facing the cooperative. I have appreciated the opportunity to serve as a director, and humbly ask the members to allow me to continue to do so in the future.

I have always had an interest in electrical power generation and distribution, and the impact it has on society. Service levels provided

I attended NDSU, received a commission, and served 27 years in the U.S Air Force. After the Air Force, I joined the VA Medical Center in Fargo as an Information Technology Specialist. In the military, I had the privilege to command a squadron, group and wing level where I was fortunate to work with great people. I received excellent executive-level training on developing new missions, core values, and measurable objectives. I know with my background, I could serve the board well, bringing fresh perspectives and unique experiences.

3-2-1 Dip - Brenda Sagert Ingredients 3 pkgs. cream cheese, softened 2 cans tomatoes, drained 1 lb. sausage, browned Preparation Mix all ingredients in a slow cooker and heat 3-4 hours until cheese is melted completely. Serve with tortilla “Scoops” chips.

Beef Stew - Betty Dunford Ingredients 1 lb. stew meat 1 pkg. onion soup mix 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1 can water Carrots Celery Onions Preparation Mix soup and water, add remaining ingredients.

Bake at 350° F for 3 hours. Serve over rice or mashed potatoes.

German Chocolate Dump Cake - Kathryn Thomas Ingredients 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut 1 ½ cups chopped toasted pecans, divided 1 pkg. devil’s food cake mix (regular size) 8 oz. cream cheese, softened ½ cup butter, melted 2 tsp. vanilla extract 2 cups confectioners’ sugar ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips Preparation Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease a 9x13 baking pan.

Sprinkle coconut and 1 cup of pecans into baking pan. Prepare cake mix according to package directions. Pour batter into prepared pan. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, butter, and vanilla until smooth, then stir in confectioners’ sugar. Stir in chocolate chips and remaining pecans. Spoon over batter. Cut through batter with a knife to swirl.

Bake 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack.

Apple Dumplings - Betty Dunford German Chocolate Cookies Carol Wenberg Ingredients 1 pkg. German chocolate cake mix 1 egg 8 oz. vanilla yogurt Coconut pecan frosting, premade Preparation Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease cookie sheet. Mix the cake mix, egg, and yogurt. Spoon mixture onto a cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes. Ice cookies while warm with coconut pecan frosting. Store in a single layer in an airtight container.

Ingredients 2 tubes crescent rolls 4 granny smith apples 1 ½ cups sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon 12 oz. can citrus-flavored soda pop Preparation Peel and cut apples in quarters. Sprinkle some sugar and cinnamon on crescent rolls using a salt shaker. Roll apple quarter in one crescent roll.

Place in a greased 9x13 pan. Melt butter and add sugar and then pour over crescent roll-ups. Pour citrus-flavored soda pop in the pan. Bake at 350° F for 45 minutes.

CHARGE Electric vehicles have something for everyone: exciting technology, impressive driving experiences, and reduced emissions. Cass County Electric Cooperative is bringing the benefits of electric vehicles to its consumer-members and the Fargo/Moorhead metro area with more convenient charging locations.

Cass County Electric Cooperative has been awarded funding through the Volkswagen settlement fund to install three Level-3 DC fast chargers in the Fargo area. The funds will cover a significant portion of the cost to purchase and install the electric vehicle charging stations located at West Acres Shopping Mall, Hornbacher’s Gateway West, and the Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

The electric vehicle chargers are 62.5 kW Level-3 DC fast chargers from ChargePoint, Inc. and will be “pay-to-charge” stations.

These chargers will provide a fast charging option for electric vehicle interstate travelers.

The goal for the three charges is to break ground, install, and make operational this summer 2020.

Cass County Electric has a total of 31 Level-2 electric vehicle chargers on the system. Twenty-four are residential chargers and seven commercial chargers. These Level-3 DC fast chargers will be the first of their kind on our system and some of the first in North Dakota.
