reliable power with carbon-free sources could be a challenge, as more baseload power is forced offline and replaced with intermittent renewable energy sources. Maintaining reliable power without scheduled baseload resources will be a problem when renewable sources are not available. This has occurred several times over the past two years, but fortunately, there were enough fossil fuel energy sources available to keep the power on and avoid rolling blackouts.

Minnkota Power Cooperative’s role is to supply the power we need today and in the future. Its challenge in the future is what power supply to use. Coal-fired generation has been the primary source of baseload power for over 40 years. With political pressure to switch to carbon-free sources, Minnkota’s only option to make sure the lights stay on is to add carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) to our existing coal-fired power plant. CCS would remove over 95 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions from our coalfired power plant located in Center. CCS would allow Minnkota to continue to burn low-cost lignite coal mined near the power plant in western North Dakota.

Reliable and affordable energy supply is critical for our great country to prosper and provide security and peace of mind for the consumer-members of Cass County Electric Cooperative.

Board Meeting Highlights April (unapproved) The Cass County Electric Board of Directors met virtually via Microsoft Teams on April 24, 2020 and discussed the following topics: • Approved the April 2020 consent agenda of the regular board meeting consisting of minutes of the previous meeting; monthly department reports; board compensation schedule; director expense report; Minnkota board report; the Annual Report on Business Continuity Plan; and the March Purchased Power Adjustment (PPA).

• President/CEO Marshal Albright gave the president’s report noting that 1,500 N95 masks were donated to area hospitals; update on employees working from home and line crew assignments; updates from NRECA and Minnkota; and local meetings attended.

• Accepted the March 2020 financial report and the first quarter yearend projections.

• Eide Bailly reviewed the 2019 IRS Form 990 with the board which was approved for filing.

• Approved the April 2020 estate capital credit payments, except for two estates that need additional paperwork.

• Approved revisions to Article II of the Bylaws, Annual Member Meetings and Absentee Voting.

• Reviewed upcoming meetings and events.

The next board meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 29, 2020.

At the April 2020 board meeting, the Board moved to approve revisions to the Bylaws: Article II, Section 2.2 - Annual Member Meetings The Board added a paragraph that states that if circumstances arise that the Board determines to be unsafe, unwarranted, or inconvenient for the Cooperative or its members; the Board may choose to postpone the Annual Member Meeting beyond June 30 of any year, and may choose to hold any Member Meeting as an online or virtual member meeting.

Also included in the Bylaw change is any online or virtual meeting that at least 75 votes are cast to meet a quorum.

Article II, Section 2.15 - Absentee Voting The revisions include the elimination of the member signature on the ballot, reference updates, and condensing Section 2.15 without substantive changes.

The changes made to Section 2.15 addresses the concerns of the membership on absentee voting and the issue of a secret ballot.

New Heights Cass County Electric invests in lineworkers - our number one line of defense - through our successful apprenticeship program.

A journeyman lineworker’s job is more than poles and power lines. It is really a combination of jobs — part engineer, part project manager, part equipment operator, and part mechanic.

Our apprenticeship training program will prepare apprentices for all aspects of this exciting and rewarding career.

Cass County Electric Cooperative’s Lineworker Apprenticeship Program, which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor, offers on-the-job experiences while an apprentice lineworker learns about the occupation and industry. After completing the program, qualified individuals earn a certification that allows them to practice linework in any state that recognizes the Department of Labor programs.

The apprentice program consists of logging 8,000 hours of work as an apprentice lineworker.

Seven thousand of these hours are spent learning the trade from journeyman lineworkers while the remaining 1,000 hours are handson education and bookwork.

Each year, our apprentices move around to each of our service centers to broaden their training, skills, and talent. Compared to

our rural service centers, Fargo presents unique linework when it comes to construction and maintenance.

Cass County Electric has both seasonal and full-time apprentice lineworkers, depending on the needs of the cooperative. Area schools with qualifying programs include: • Bismarck State College • Dakota County Technical College • Minnesota West Community and Technical College • Minnesota State Community and Technical College • Mitchell Technical Institute The ideal candidate is a problemsolver, someone who enjoys various weather conditions such as rain, snow, and extreme winds.

Successful lineworkers need to be comfortable with heights, the danger related to working with high voltages, and able to work on their feet for long periods of time.

A work-hard attitude and friendly demeanor are beneficial in this role.

Once applicants have completed a qualifying lineworker program, they can apply to Cass County Electric’s Lineworker

Apprenticeship Program by filling out an application for an open position or leaving a resume on file for future openings. Selected candidates will be evaluated through a sit-down interview followed by a series of climbing, driving, and written tests. Upon completion of these prerequisites, applicants will be considered for the program.

Cass County Electric’s apprenticeship program offers candidates the opportunity to be supervised by experienced journeyman lineworkers while learning the profession through hands-on training. The program offers competitive wages and excellent benefits. Seasonal apprentices receive benefits upon hire. These benefits include paid continued education from Northwest Line College, a retirement program, safety and equipment operator training, and further lineworker training.

Additionally, because the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recognizes the apprenticeship program, those who complete the program will be certified as a lineworker in any state that acknowledges the DOL programs.

What’s on That Pole?

This illustration shows the basic equipment found on electric utility poles. The equipment varies according to the location and the service they provide.

PRIMARY WIRES Primary wires carry 7,200 volts of electricity from a substation. That voltage is 60 times higher than the voltage that runs through your home’s electrical outlets!

SURGE ARRESTORS These protect the transformer from lightning strikes.

NEUTRAL WIRE The neutral wire acts as a line back to the substation and is tied to the ground, balancing the electricity on the system.

SECONDARY SERVICE DROP Carries 120/240-volts of electricity to consumers’ homes. It has two “hot” wires from the transformer and a bare “neutral” wire that’s connected to the ground wire on the pole.

NEVER NAIL POSTERS OR OTHER ITEMS TO UTILITY POLES. THESE CREATE A SAFETY HAZARD FOR LINEWORKERS.

INSULATORS Insulators prevent energized wires from contacting each other or the pole.

GROUND WIRE The ground wire connects to the neutral wire to complete the circuit inside the transformer. It also directs electricity from lightning safely into the earth.

Co-op Contractors The work doesn’t end for an electric utility once the power lines are in the air or underground. With a 10-county service area and more than 52,000 active accounts, it takes a massive maintenance effort to keep the power running smoothly. To make it happen, Cass County Electric Cooperative augments its workforce with contractors to help with some of the heavy lifting.

The companies below provide crucial services that aid our maintenance efforts. If you see them out in the field, there’s a chance they’re helping us keep the power on for you.

Carr’s Tree Service: Carr’s handles vegetation management for Cass County Electric. This service keeps tree limbs clear of power lines to prevent fires and power outages.

Martin Engineering: Martin Engineering conducts regular pole testing to assess the condition of power poles in the field. Aged, damaged, or otherwise unsuitable poles are marked for replacement to avoid further damage, accidents, and power outages. Martin Engineering also conducts other equipment maintenance and lawn restorations.

Dakota Hills Electric: Cass County Electric is responsible for select yard lights in rural areas, and Dakota Hills Electric conducts light maintenance and replacements on our behalf.

Power outages caused by damage to underground cables increase in the spring and summer. Call 8-1-1 before you dig. It’s easy, and it’s the law.

Forty-nine percent of Cass County Electric Cooperative’s 5,685 miles of power lines are buried underground. Though these lines are safe from high winds and accidental vehicle damage, they are susceptible to another threat every spring. Once the ground thaws, landscaping and construction projects take off and so do accidental dig-ins to underground power lines. Outdoor projects can cause big problems if you do not plan ahead.

Digging into power lines can cause outages for the whole neighborhood; it also can be extremely dangerous and life-threatening. It’s not just buried power lines that you have to worry about, either. Water, sewer, gas, and telecommunications equipment are often right underfoot. Luckily, there’s an easy process to keep you safe.

Two days before you work, visit ndonecall.com or call 8-1-1. You’ll provide details about the work you’re doing and ND One Call will alert the appropriate utility companies. Once a request is made, the companies have 48 hours to mark the locations of buried equipment. The paint or flags they leave behind will be your guide to safety.

On a related note, we remind you to keep a clear space around transformers – 10 feet in front and 3 feet on each side – so workers can access them. Tall, decorative grasses that can bend and restore themselves are okay, but anything else planted within the listed space may be damaged or removed.

Preparation

Place chicken breasts in bottom of crockpot.

Sprinkle a little salt on the chicken. Dump vegetables on top. Sprinkle dressing mix and spices over vegetables. Stir together. Lay cream cheese on top. Cook on high for 6 hours or low for 8 hours. Shred chicken and stir in cream cheese.

Reverse Seared Tri Tip, Andrew Curtis Ingredients

Preparation

2.5 pounds tri tip trimmed of excess fat 2 tablespoons of Neil Saraps Brisket Seasoning OR favorite BBQ rub

Preparation

Rub meat with brisket seasoning or your favorite BBQ rub and let rest while you get the smoker set up and heated to temperature. Set up smoker to 200°-225° with oak wood. Place tri tip in smoker and smoke until the internal temperature reaches 110°. Remove tri tip from smoker and adjust temperature of your smoker or grill to cook at 400°. Return to smoker and sear both sides for about 3 minutes or until it reaches an internal temperature of 130°. Wrap tri tip in butcher paper or tin foil and let rest for 15 minutes before slicing thin and serving.

3 cups flour (any mix of flours works, but you may still want to keep 1 cup white flour, so it doesn’t get too heavy) 1 ½ cups water 1 ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon yeast

Mix ingredients in a large bowl. Cover with plastic wrap. Leave covered on counter 8-10 hours or up to 24 hours. Turn out on a floured surface; dough will be very sticky. Lightly flour the top of the dough and fold it onto itself several times. Fold it into the shape of the loaf that you want. Return loaf seam side down onto a heavily floured towel or board.

Lightly flour top of the dough and cover with a second dish towel. Leave for 1-1/2 hours. Put Dutch oven into a cold oven and turn on to 475°. When the oven has preheated, take the dutch oven out and carefully remove the lid.

Flip dough loaf into the Dutch oven. Cover and bake at 375° for 25 minutes. Remove cover and continue to bake 5-50 minutes until bread is the brownness you desire.

Chill Your Bill 7 Tips to Save Energy in the Summer

Most people expect higher energy costs in the summer. We crank up the air conditioning to get out of the heat; the kids are home from school and spend all day on their electronics; and, when you finally convince them to play outside, you find yourself washing extra loads of bathing suits, beach towels, and muddy clothes. The warm weather comes with a price. But, with a little preparation, you can manage your energy use wisely and cut down on your bill.

We’ve shared 7 tips that will help you use less energy in the summer and save you valuable money on your utilities.

Ceiling Fan

Use your fan to your advantage. Make sure it’s spinning in the correct direction (usually counterclockwise) to push cool air down.

Close Blinds

During the warmest hours of the day, close your window blinds. This keeps the cool air from escaping and the hot air from entering.

Wash with Cold Water

Washing laundry is one of the biggest energy users we have around the house. Wash your clothes in cold water to avoid using energy to heat the water for the machine.

Relax and Unplug

That charger you left plugged in that is not charging anything sucks your energy away. To ease your mind on your next energy bill, simply unplug those chargers that are not in use.

Optimize Thermostat Setting

Keep your thermostat set as high as possible when you’re away. Adjusting your thermostat 10 to 15 degrees – or up to 78 degrees for eight hours during the work day – could save you up to 10 percent on your cooling bills. Small changes can save you money. If you don’t already have one, get a smart thermostat that you can control from your phone.

Upgrade Appliances like AC

If you are ready to take your energy savings to the next level, upgrade to an Energy Star certified air conditioning system. They are 15 percent more efficient than other models. If you can’t afford to upgrade your air conditioning system, make sure your current model is clean and running at its best.

Go Low Flow

During hot, dry summer months, most people use more water on lawn, plants, and for bathing. To keep your bill down, water your plants in the early morning or at dusk and avoid the summer sun when water evaporates. Also, switch your showerhead to a low-flow fixture to avoid wasted water.
