For comparison purposes, I will focus on cooperatives of a similar size to Cass. In 2018, Cass had an average of 49,892 accounts with a median of 49,146. Cass County Electric currently has 93 full-time employees compared to our peer group’s 125. Over the past decade, Cass has invested in technology and process improvements to maintain an employee count that supports the needs of our growing consumer-member base.

Every day, employees of Cass County Electric strive to provide exceptional value to our consumermembers. To determine how we stack up against other cooperatives, one of our lending institutions, the Cooperative Finance Corporation, compiles performance data from electric cooperatives across the country.

Financial At the end of 2018, the cooperative’s equity (as a percent of all assets) was 42.24% as compared to the median of our peer group, 41.70%. Our current equity level for a co-op that is growing and investing in new infrastructure is in-line with cooperatives of similar size across the country.

The Key Ratio Trend Analysis (KRTA) is a set of all-encompassing financial and operating ratios used by distribution cooperatives to understand how their organization has performed historically and against other cooperatives in the nation, the state of North Dakota, and areas of a similar size.

The average interest on our longterm debt is 3.59% compared to the median of our peer group at 3.95%. Chad Sapa, our CFO, has done a great job managing the finances for the cooperative, and as a result, our interest expense is lower than the average co-op.

The primary focus at Cass County Electric is to provide reliable and affordable electricity to our consumer-members. I will highlight some of the ratios that show our

team had another great year in 2018 by managing accounts receivables resulting in a write-off of $37,239. This is an exceptional 0.027% of revenue written off, compared to our KRTA peer group median of 0.10% of revenue.

Power cost Our cost for wholesale power in 2018 was $.07775/kWh compared to our peer group at $.07141/kWh. Minnkota Power Cooperative supplies the electricity we sell to our consumer-members. Minnkota has invested more than $800 million in power supply, emission controls, and transmission over the past 15 years to ensure we have adequate power for the future.

Electric rates should be stable for the next decade barring any new environmental regulations.

The cost to deliver electricity from our substations to homes and businesses is called the distribution adder. Cass County Electric has held the line on our distribution adder, and in 2018 was at $.02173/kWh compared to our peer group at $.03346/ kWh. The significant difference between our peer group and Cass’ distribution adder is the performance of our committed employees and growth in new members. We also have a focus on process improvement initiatives, cost control measures, financial management, and a board that is focused on keeping our cost low yet providing exceptional service to our consumer-members. The

difference in the distribution adder between our peer group is an annual savings of more than $15,000,000 to the members of Cass County Electric.

Power delivery Our line loss in 2018 was 2.62% compared to our peer group at 4.44%. A low line loss is a result of good maintenance. We focus on adequate tree trimming, proper sizing of transformers, and adequate maintenance of all devices in our distribution system. Our engineering and operations team does a fantastic job of keeping our line-loss low.

Cass County Electric has the lowest outage time of all the cooperatives in our peer group, and we have the best reliability in the nation. A huge thank you goes out to our linemen, our power control center operators, and our engineering team for keeping your power on as much as possible.

As you can see from the statistics, your cooperative is performing at a high level. We will work hard to make sure we continue to provide the level of service you expect.

• President/CEO Marshal Albright gave the President’s Report, reporting on: Greater FM EDC “Un” Annual Meeting; met with a representative of the Harmony Solar Project; update from Minnkota Power Cooperative meetings; attended a Cass County

Commission Meeting; and update from the Staff Retreat.

• Approved the second quarter 2019 financial report.

• Received reports from Minnkota Power Cooperative and ND Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives.

• Received the audit results from the Annual IT Security Review conducted

by Eide Bailly LLC. • Received reports from the directors attending the NRUCFC Forum, and the REPAC Education Session.

• Approved the July 2019 estate capital credit payments.

• Reviewed upcoming meetings and events.

FARGO’S FIRST “AX-CEPTIONAL” ENTERTAINMENT What they thought was a simple anniversary trip turned out to be life-changing. Marcel Baumgartner and her boyfriend, Erik Kalberg came back to Fargo with an “ax-ceptional” idea.

“It kinda came out of nowhere,” said Marcel Baumgartner, coowner of Triple Ax. Ax throwing came up after Googling ideas on what to do in Minneapolis, they decided to try it out – and they fell in love. The owners of the business were not looking to expand to Fargo, so Baumgartner and Kalberg agreed to take it into their hands.

“On the drive home, we were like, we could do it. Let’s do it,” said

Baumgartner with a smile. “This seems like something we would be able to do on our own. We jumped in.”

To both Baumgartner and Kalberg, ax throwing is more than just a business – for them it’s a place to build community. When they were digging into how to start up an axthrowing business, they sought out the help of other business owners and found a community behind the ax. “They were really helpful to us and trying to get the sport to grow,” said Baumgartner with a smile.

Before opening the doors, the couple first brainstormed some ideal customers they wanted to attract. “We were like well lumberjacks, guys, big beards – that’s it!” said Baumgartner as she began to laugh. Let’s just say their guess was a little off. They soon

realized Triple Ax was a welcoming place for all types of people.

Everyone from children, women, and big guys with beards flooded the doors of Triple Ax. “It really made me realize how well this (Triple Ax) fit in with Fargo,” Baumgartner said.

Triple Ax opened its doors on March 15, 2019, and since their grand opening they’ve had a substantial surge of ax-throwing flannel-wearing participants, Cass County Electric included. We traded our work attire for some flannel to see first-hand what axthrowing was all about.

Most of the Cass County Electric employees were intimidated by throwing an ax because it’s not a normal activity in this area – at least not yet.

As we arrived, Baumgartner coached us through how to throw

an ax properly, what techniques work the best to get a stick, and of course, went over the rules.

For what could be a hazardous sport, there are only five rules Triple Ax enforces.

1. Closed-toe shoes are required 2. Throw only when the lane is clear 3. Retrieve axes once all throwers in the lane have finished 4. Do NOT throw if there is already an ax in the target 5. Do not attempt to stop a moving ax Besides those five rules, you

must be 10-years-old or older to participate. There is no alcohol allowed in the facility – they wanted a place where anyone could come on a Friday night and hang out. You would be hardpressed to find a negative review about Triple Ax. There is a learning curve, but Baumgartner makes sure all ax throwers get at least one stick during their throwing time.

“I really like seeing the transformation people go through when they come in scared or

frightened and by the time they leave they are excited and wanting to come back,” said Baumgartner.

“I love seeing that change and people enjoy it.”

In the future Triple Ax plans on joining the World Ax Throwing League and hopes to open up a second facility near NDSU. Since opening Triple Ax created a mobile ax throwing setup. With two targets, a fenced area, and lots of axes they can bring their “axceptional” good time anywhere.

The Operation Round Up Program (ORU) rounds up members’ electric bills to the next whole dollar amount to raise money for organizations in need within the community.

Members participating in the program contribute an estimated average of $6 each year — just a small amount that goes a long way to help worthy causes in our region.

A volunteer board of directors comprised of cooperative members from across our service territory determine how and to whom the funds get distributed. Since forming in 1993, Cass County Electric’s ORU program has given back more than $3 million.

Cass County Electric’s off-peak programs offer participating members lower rates in exchange for managing their electricity use during times of high energy demand, such as extremely cold winter days. The most popular off-peak option is dual heat, where a member’s primary heat source is electric, but they also have a backup source, like propane. The majority of the time, the member is able to use the electric heat as desired, but if energy demand is high, Cass County Electric is able to automatically switch the member to their backup heat source. INFINITY PROGRAM

Through the Infinity Renewable Energy program, you can decide how much of the electricity you purchase is generated by renewable resources. When enrolling in the program, you choose a designated number of kilowatt-hours (kWh) or percentage of the electricity used that you would like to come from renewable resources. Cass County Electric will allocate the appropriate amount of renewable energy through the program and indicate your purchases on your monthly bill. Contact our energy management department to learn how you can participate in the program. The record of that purchase and the proof that it was reserved for you is done through a renewable energy credit (REC). A REC is verification that electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource and was integrated into the electric grid.

More than 1,500 high school students from around the nation participate in the annual Electric Cooperative Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. Electric Power Tools - Leaf Blowers Electric leaf blowers make life easy.

With an electric leaf blower, you can do what you did in a whole weekend in a couple of hours of raking — no more attempting to create the correct mixture of oil and gas along with three other steps before starting your task. What makes electric tools helpful is that they start with a push of a button and are simple, straightforward, and safe to use. Even the kids could use them. You might want to add that to their list of chores.

Buying a leaf blower involves making decisions like what type of electric leaf blower, batterypowered, or cored. Then the decision on what style you like – handheld, backpack, or wheeled.

The choices don’t stop there, other items to consider before purchasing is the amount of noise and power.

Electric leaf blowers are environmentally friendly. As many of you know, gas-powered tools emit carbon dioxide, which is bad for the environment. If you are taking other measures to be greener, an electric leaf blower should be on your list.

With most electric tools, you will notice the sound difference. Gaspowered equipment is loud, and electric is quiet. If you are an early riser and like to get your chores done sooner than later, an electric leaf blower would be the perfect fit.

You wouldn’t have to worry about the quiet hours, and you get the job done when it suits you.

Corded Electric Blowers Corded electric leaf blowers are lightweight and are more powerful than a battery-powered one. They can run for extended periods, so

you avoid the worry of running out of battery. They are easy to use and easy to maneuver. Corded electric leaf blowers have a modest price tag that ranges from $30-$110.

Battery-powered Battery-powered electric leaf blowers are great for first-time owners. If you have a favorite brand, odds are the electric leaf blower brand shares the same battery as other tools in your garage. With this type, it’s as easy as clicking a button, and you’re on your way.

Battery-powered blowers are suitable for first-timers due to the ease of use. The downfall with battery-operated tools is the limited run time. They work great for smaller job duties, but if you have a large task to complete, you may want to have a spare battery. Costs range from $150 - $300.

Power lines and poles may be closer than you think As farmers, getting up before dawn, crawling into your office with coffee in tow, ready to harvest this year’s yield, is what you have been working towards all year. As professionals, you know how important safety is to your bottom line. You also know that farming is one of the most dangerous occupations in America. At Cass County Electric Cooperative, we want you to be aware of a hazard on the farm electrocution. According the the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 62 farm workers are electrocuted each year in the United States.

For your safety, make sure you have at least 10 feet of clearance between power lines and your combines, grain augers, balers, and front end loaders. Farming equipment is vulnerable to hitting power lines because of its large size, height, and extensions.

Newer, larger equipment can make the job quicker but also can increase your risk of contacting a power line. Look for low-hanging lines when you enter and leave a field. Keep in mind that uneven ground and shifting soil conditions can put you in harm’s way.

An example of a distracted farmer who ran into a power line pole. The line that’s laying across the tractor was still energized when crews came to help. The farmer did the right thing by staying inside the tractor and calling for help. If he opened his door, he could have been seriously injured by the energized line.

If your equipment does make contact with a power line, do not leave the cab. Call 9-1-1, tell others to stay away and wait for help. If the equipment starts on fire get out, but don’t let any part of your body touch the equipment and ground at the same time! Do not go back to your equipment until the utility says it is safe to do so. Stay clear of all downed wires. Downed powerlines can still be energized.

Ingredients: 1 Block of cream cheese softened 1 Can of chicken 1 T. Worcestershire sauce 1 T. Liquid Smoke Preparation: Combine, chill, and serve.

Peach Cobbler Crisp in a Mug Paula Krogen Ingredients: 1 Peach diced 2 T. Oatmeal 1 T. Brown sugar 1 T. Sugar 1 T. Flour 1 T. Butter Pinch salt Sprinkle cinnamon Preparation: Mix and microwave for 2 ½ minutes.

Dill Pickle Dip

Ingredients: 12 oz Cream cheese, softened 5-6 T. Pickle juice 1/3 c. Finely chopped dill pickle 1 T. Fresh dill, chopped Preparation: Mix cream cheese until soft, add in pickle juice a little at a time to reach desired consistency. Remember the dip will be thicker once refrigerated.

Stir in chopped pickle and fresh dill.

Refrigerate 30 minutes before serving.

Instant Pot Crack Chicken Pasta Nitasha Asplin

Ingredients: 1 lb. Boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces 2 T. Olive oil 1 (1 oz) Package Original Ranch dressing mix 1/4 c. Cooked chopped bacon 1 (8 oz) Package cream cheese 1 lb Dry penne pasta 3 c. Low-sodium chicken broth 2 c. Water 2 c. (8 oz) Shredded cheddar cheese Preparation: Preheat Instant Pot on “Sauté” setting; add oil, chicken, and ranch packet, stirring to coat. Cook chicken 2–3 minutes.

Add pasta, broth, and water to pot. Close lid, lock pot, select “Manual” setting and 4 minutes time. Cook pasta until time is up, then quick release and open Pot. Stir in cream cheese, cheddar cheese and cooked bacon until combined; let pasta set 5 minutes to thicken. Serve immediately.

1 lb. Ground chicken or beef

Taco seasoning

1 Bottle Western salad dressing Lettuce

Cheese (Colby Jack)

1 bag Doritos (taco or nacho cheese)

Black olives (optional)

Tomatoes (optional)

Jalapeños (optional) Preparation: 1 lb. ground chicken or beef add taco seasoning, let chill, add a bottle of Western salad dressing. Put meat in the bottom of a large bowl, layer with lettuce, shredded cheese (colby jack), crunch up a bag of either nacho cheese or taco flavored Doritos, mix all ingredients together, right before serving. You can add black olives, tomatoes or jalapenos.
