One of the seven cooperative principles is “Cooperation Among Cooperatives.” In the United States, 831 electric cooperatives serve 56 percent of the nation’s landmass and provide power to more than 42 million people.

In 1942, farmers and ranchers formed the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) to secure electricity to better their lives. As the national service organization that represents

America’s electric cooperatives, NRECA works to empower electric cooperatives and to help ensure their long-term success in several ways: · Amplifying the voice of America’s electric cooperatives and their consumer-members in Washington, D.C. · Working with elected officials to keep electricity safe, reliable and affordable. · Helping the employees of electric cooperatives learn and grow professionally. · Promoting the cooperative business model and the benefits of co-op membership. · Researching and communicating with NRECA voting members regarding tax laws, environmental and other issues. · Spearheading programs to strengthen co-ops and their communities, such as advocacy campaigns and workforce development initiatives.

CO-OP YOUTH TOUR WIN AN ALL-INCLUSIVE TRIP TO WASHINGTON, D.C.

September The Cass County Electric Board of Directors met on September 24, 2019 and discussed the following topics: • Approved the September 2019, consent agenda of the regular board meeting consisting of: minutes of the previous meeting, monthly department reports, board compensation schedule, and the August Purchased Power Adjustment (PPA).

• President/CEO Marshal Albright gave the President’s Report, reporting on: the NRECA Region 6 Meeting; updates from meetings attended; the Valley Prosperity Partnership, and Grand Farm; and gave an overview of the upcoming Member Meetings.

• Accepted the August 2019 financial report.

• Visited with David Noess, of Federated Rural Electric Insurance Exchange, to review the Cooperative’s property and liability coverage.

• Received a presentation on padmounted switch gear failures and what is being done to remedy the situation.

The cooperative difference Electric co-ops are local energy and technology providers. They are shaped by the specific needs of the communities they serve. This local, member-driven structure is one reason why cooperatives enjoy the highest consumer-satisfaction scores within the electric industry, according to J.D. Power and Associates and the American Consumer Satisfaction Index.

MEET DIRECTOR FROELICH A few miles outside of Valley City, N.D., where the sun-kissed fields of gold meet the wind-swept blades of grass, you’ll find a long, narrow, gravel road that weaves its way to a farmhouse, where John Froelich, Cass County Electric Cooperative, District 1 Director, lives.

The main goal of those airplanes was to stop the Russian heavy bombers from coming over the North Pole.

When asked why he enjoys being a board member, Froelich says looking to the future and remembering the past helps him provide the best possible service to the members. As a 24-year Cass County Electric Cooperative director, he cares about his neighbors, his community and the members he has yet to meet.

crew Welcome New Employee Ryan Lee

Cass County Electric Cooperative welcomed Ryan Lee as our new GIS specialist in August. Lee comes to us from Columbia Rural Electric Association, which is in the apple-growing state of Washington.

Lee plays a vital role in helping Cass County Electric remain safe and reliable for employees, contractors, and our members, by creating and maintaining our mapping system. In this role, he identifies every piece of equipment on the system.

Equipment includes items like transformers, poles, meters. When another employee installs a new meter, Lee not only notes the member’s address for the new equipment but the precise location on the property.

During an outage, our line crew can open our maps and know exactly where they need to start looking for an issue to restore the power. The mapping system improves our reliability and decreases outage restoration time. As the number of consumer-member continues to increase, it’s Lee’s role to keep our maps up-to-date, so at Cass County Electric Cooperative we can provide affordable and reliable energy.

Ham Pickle Roll Ups Mindy Tervola Ingredients 1 Package sliced ham 8 oz. Cream cheese 1 Jar pickles Preparation Slather some cream cheese on a slice of ham and then lay a pickle in the middle of the ham slice.

Roll it up and then slice it evenly.

Perfect to grab and go.

Sausage Dip

Tammy Davis Fraase Ingredients 1 lb. Ground pork sausage 1 lb. Spicy ground pork sausage 1/2 tsp. Garlic powder 1/2 tsp. Minced dried onion 16 oz. Cream cheese, cubed 20 oz. Ro-Tel diced tomatoes and green chilis (undrained) Salt and pepper, to taste 2 c. Shredded cheddar cheese, divided Minced fresh chives, for garnish Preparation Add both sausages to a large skillet and cook, breaking up meat with a wooden spoon as you cook, until sausage is browned, about 6-8 minutes. Drain cooked sausage, then add to slowcooker insert. Top with garlic powder, dried onion, cubed cream cheese, Ro-Tel, hot sauce, pinch of salt and pepper, and 1 cup of the cheddar cheese.

Stir well, then cover and cook on high for 1.5-2 hours. Remove cover and sprinkle with remaining 1 cup of cheddar cheese, then cover again and cook another 10-15 minutes, until cheese is melted.

Sprinkle with minced chives and serve hot. Enjoy with chips.

Buffalo Chicken Dip Kimberly Peters Larson Ingredients 2 (8 oz.) Packages cream cheese, room temperature 1 c. Ranch dressing ž c. Red Franks Red Hot Sauce Original 2 Cans canned chicken 1 Package shredded cheddar cheese Preparation Mix all ingredients together and add to crock pot. Cook on low for 1-2 hours until hot and bubbly. Enjoy with chips.

Corn Dip Tiffany Knutson Ingredients 15 oz. can Corn, drained 22 oz. can Mexicorn, drained (Can use southwest corn) 1 c. Sour cream 1 c. Mayonnaise 1 Bundle green onions, chopped 2 c. Shredded cheese Tortilla chips Preparation Mix together corn, mexicorn, sour cream, mayonnaise, green onions and cheese. If desired, reserve a few tablespoons of chopped green onion or cheese to garnish the top of the dip.

Serve dip immediately with tortilla chips for dipping.

Queso Kimberly Peters Larson Ingredients 1 lb. White American cheese cubed 1 c. Half and half 1/4 c. Salsa verde Optional garnishes: 1 c. Pico de gallo Preparation Place the cheese, salsa verde and half and half in a pan over med. heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until melted and smooth. Serve immediately, top with pico de gallo. Enjoy with chips.

d safety 9 Slow Cooker Safety Tips

The safety of our members, employees and communities is our number one priority. If you are looking for a speaker on electrical safety, call our manager of safety at 701-356-4400.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking is the number one cause of U.S. home fires. While the odds of your slow cooker starting on fire are slim, you can never be too careful when it comes to kitchen safety. Keep your family safe this holiday season with these slow cooker safety tips.

Inspect the slow cooker cord every time you use it.

Check for frayed or exposed wires.

Thaw first.

Always thaw meat before putting it into a slow cooker. If frozen pieces are used, they may not reach 140° at the correct time and could result in food-borne illness.

Don’t cook on warm.

Do not use a warm setting for cooking food.

That setting is designed to keep cooked food hot.

Soak and boil dried beans first.

Dried beans, especially kidney beans, contain a natural toxin. Soak beans for 12 hours, rinse and then boil on the stovetop for at least 10 minutes before adding them to a slow cooker.

Put vegetables on the bottom or sides.

Vegetables cook the slowest, so place them near the heat, at the bottom and sides of the slow cooker.

Keep the lid on.

Do not lift the lid unnecessarily during the cooking cycle. Each time the lid is raised, the internal temperature drops 10° to 15°, and the process is slowed by 30 minutes.

Check with a food thermometer.

Before taking a bite, check the meat with a food thermometer to make sure it has reached a safe internal temperature. (Roasts: 145° to 160°; Poultry: 165°; Soups & sauces: 165°) Cool properly.

Do not leave cooked food to cool in the crock. Eat immediately or place leftovers in shallow containers and refrigerate them.

Do not reheat food or leftovers in a slow cooker.

Instead, reheat on stovetop or microwave (165° or above) and transfer to a slow cooker to keep warm (140° or above).
