“Safety” is a universal word that is mentioned often and used loosely.

Communities large and small, as well as companies across all industries, are committed to safety.

Sports leagues, at every level, take safety seriously. Unfortunately, when it really counts, steps to keep the public, workers, athletes and loved ones safe are often ignored in the interest of expediency or convenience.

However, safety is a serious issue, especially when it comes to electrical safety. At Cass County Electric Cooperative, it’s our number one priority - this is not empty talk. Over time, Cass County Electric Cooperative has created a culture of safety by putting our employees’ safety and that of the community above all else. At its essence, Cass County Electric Cooperative purpose is to provide safe electricity to its consumer-

Following Leading National Safety Standards Working with electricity is an inherently dangerous job, especially for lineworkers. Cass County Electric Cooperative has a safety team whose focus is keeping employees and the community safe around electricity.

We established and follow safety protocols based on leading national safety practices for the utility industry. We require our lineworkers to wear specialized equipment when working next to or with power lines. There are specific protocols that our lineworkers follow when dealing with electricity. Cass County Electric Cooperative lineworkers have signed a personal commitment to safety by signing a “Commitment to Zero” contacts pledge. Our safety team has regular meetings where they discuss upcoming projects from a safety perspective. They monitor and track near-misses of accidents in order to understand them, share “lessons learned” and improve in the future.

We are cultivating a culture of safety by being transparent and open, and by encouraging all employees to speak up and

hold each other accountable for safety to increase problemsolving regarding safety, rather than defaulting to a blame game.

We examine the information and data gleaned from near-misses and accident reports to discern patterns and use safety metrics to improve in those areas where we have fallen short. As appropriate, we brief contractors on our safety protocols and set expectations for their engagement.

Keeping the Community Safe Because we live and work in the community we serve, Cass County Electric Cooperative conducts electrical safety demonstrations in schools and for community events.

May is National Electrical Safety Month. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation, each year thousands of people in the United States are critically injured and electrocuted as a result of electrical fires, accidents, and electrocution in their own homes. Many of these accidents are preventable. There is much you can do to keep yourself and your community safe around electricity.

Don’t attempt electrical DIY projects or overload your outlets.

Report downed power lines or electrical boxes that look amiss.

Contact Cass County Electric Cooperative for additional electrical safety tips. Be mindful when it comes to electrical safety.

Pause and take the extra time to plug into safety. Always be safe around electricity!

2019 Board Highlights Board meetings are generally held the last Tuesday of the month.

February (Approved) The Cass County Electric Board of Directors met on February 26, 2019 and discussed the following topics: • Approved the February 2019 consent agenda of the regular board meeting consisting of: minutes of the previous meeting, monthly department reports, board compensation schedule, retirement of small capital credits to former members, and the January Purchased Power Adjustment (PPA).

• President/CEO Marshal Albright gave the President’s Report, reporting on meetings attended, director candidate visits, and a brief update on the North Dakota Legislative Session.

• Approved the January financial report.

• Approved the report from the Credentials Committee Meeting held January 29, 2019.

• Troy Knutson, P.E. reported on the 2018 Construction Work Plan noting that 1,755 work orders were opened totaling $13M and gave an overview of the 2019 construction plan.

• Heard the 2018 plant damage report (damage done to electric plant by anyone other than an employee) noting that total plant damage for the year was $169,992.

• Accepted the 2018 financial audit prepared by Eide Bailly.

• Approved the February 2019 estate capital credit payments.

March (Unapproved) The Cass County Electric Board of Directors met on March 27, 2019 and discussed the following topics: • The board and management staff thanked retiring Director Russell

Berg for his 30 years of service to the members of the Cooperative. Director Berg stated he enjoyed his years as a director, the opportunity to meet people throughout the state of North Dakota, and the Camp Grassick project.

• Approved the March 2019 consent agenda of the regular board meeting consisting of: minutes of the previous meeting, monthly department reports, board compensation schedule, and the February Purchased Power Adjustment (PPA).

• President/CEO Marshal Albright gave the President’s Report, reporting on meetings attended, updates from Minnkota Power Cooperative, discussed recent issues with power distribution equipment failure, and an update from the Greater Fargo/Moorhead Economic Development Corporation.

• Approved the February financial report.

• Received reports from the Minnkota Power Cooperative, Square Butte Electric Cooperative, and North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives.

• Chad Brousseau, Manager of Energy Services, reported on the energy management program and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) maximum generation event during polar vortex in January.

• Jocelyn Hovland, Marketing and Graphic Coordinator, reviewed the 2019 Annual Meeting plans, and recommended dates for future annual meetings.

• Reports from the 2019 NRECA Annual Meeting were given.

• Approved the March 2019 estate capital credit payments.

Local “Eatertainery” is On Cue! By: Erin Hemme Froslie It’s Thursday night at Fargo Billiards and Gastropub, and John Flores watches his opponent start the game by breaking the eightball rack. One ball slips into a pocket, and Flores settles back to wait for the other player to miss a shot, which isn’t likely. Thursdays are master league night at the south Fargo pool hall and Flores is playing against Rory Hendrickson, a national-level player.

This tale of friendly competition plays out several times a week at the pool parlor tucked behind 32nd Avenue South in Fargo.

Understated from the outside, Fargo Billiards and Gastropub is the largest pool hall in North America. It hosts tournaments that draw players from throughout the U.S. and Canada and supports two nights of league play.

It also boasts its share of homegrown talent. Gastropub has built its reputation on pool and good food, but the business has much more to offer in the “eatertainery” field.

This spring, Gastropub hosted its first ping-pong tournament where 32 players battled for honors. Around the same time, the business hosted its first foosball tournament, which drew 28 competitors.

A weekly dart league recently was formed. And when the snow piles melt, players flock to the Gastropub’s patio, which features sand volleyball courts, cornhole and bocce ball courts.

“We pride ourselves on being a place where people of all ages and all skill levels can come and have fun,” says Amanda Kaloustian, associate general manager.

Co-op Outage Lingo Facebook Update: The outage was cause by an under-ground cable fault.

What’s that? This is one of the most common questions we receive as we update our social channels during an outage. We know many industries have their own jargon, but we want to turn that jargon into common knowledge.

Here are some of the most likely to be used terms during a power outage:

Animal contact: Outage term to define the cause of an interruption due to birds, squirrels and raccoons that use the primary distribution system as travel paths or landing spots.

Arc:

The flow of an electric current across a gap between two conductors, terminals or contacts. An arc can result in sparks, a loud noise, and a momentary or sustained outage as protective equipment operates.

Cable fault:

Brown outs:

Drop in voltage in electrical power supply, so named because it typically causes lights to dim.

Blinks:

A momentary outage usually lasting less than 2 seconds.

Back feed:

The ability to route power from an alternate direction.

Acronym for Substation Control and Data Acquisition. Technology that monitors and controls distribution and transmission systems.

Switch:

A device for making, breaking, or changing connections in an electrical circuit.

Voltage:

Transformer:

A device used to raise or lower voltage within electric distribution and transmission lines.

The pressure from an electrical circuit’s power source that pushes charged electrons (current) through a conducting loop, enabling them to do work such as illuminating a lamp. It is measured in volts.

May is National Electrical Safety Month, and here at Cass County Electric Cooperative safety is always top of mind. During May, we take extra time to talk about the dangers of electricity. Electricity is a necessity in the modern world we live in and most of us will go on living our lives without thinking twice about what could happen if improperly used.

Every year our lineworkers perform pole top rescue training. It provides them with the necessary skills to rescue a fellow lineworker if an emergency occurs. The lineworkers don’t have to climb electrical line poles as often as they used to due to the advancement of technology like unmanned aerial vehicles.

Tomato Basil Pasta

Ingredients: 2 c. diced tomatoes 1 small onion (finely chopped) 6 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 2 cloves crushed garlic 6 leaves fresh basil (torn) 10 oz. fusilli pasta 3 Tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese, or to taste 1 ½ c. crumbled feta cheese Salt and ground black pepper to taste Preparation: Stir tomatoes, onion, olive oil, garlic, and basil together in a bowl. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil.

Cook fusilli in the boiling water, stirring occasionally, until cooked through but firm to the bite, 12 minutes. Drain.

Toss warm pasta with feta cheese and Parmesan cheese in a large bowl. Stir tomato mixture into pasta and season with salt and pepper.

Quinoa Summer Salad Jocelyn Hovland, Marketing & Graphic Coordinator Ingredients: I c. quinoa 1 English cucumber (dice to ½”) 2 c. grape tomatos (halved) 3 green onions (chopped) 1 bunch of cilantro (finely chopped) 6 oz. feta cheese 2 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 1 tsp. minced garlic Juice of 1 lemon 1 tsp. pepper Preparation: Prepare quinoa according to package instructions, chill. Prepare and combine fresh ingredients. Combine dressing ingredients. Mix everything, stir dressing in gently, and refrigerate.

Rice Bowl with Brats Sara Erickson, Multimedia Communiations Coordinator Ingredients: 2 c. white rice 2 c. water 4 brats Soy sauce Preparation: Boil brats for 10 minutes, drain and put brats on top in the steamer section of the rice cooker. Add rice and two cups water into the rice cooker. Done in 40 minutes. Four servings.

Egg Roll in a Bowl Betsy Erickson, Marketing & Communications Assistant Ingredients: 2 Tbsp. olive oil, divided 1 lb. ground turkey 1 ½ c. sweet onion, finely diced 1 c. carrots, shredded ½ tsp. ginger, minced 3 cloves garlic, minced ¼ c. chicken broth 5 c. cabbage, cut into 1/4 – inch shreds 2 Tbsp. soy sauce 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar Toasted sesame seeds, optional Green onions, optional Preparation: In a large saute pan over medium heat, drizzle 1 tbsp olive oil and add ground turkey. Cook for 8-9 minutes, or until turkey is cooked. Push turkey to the side and add onion and remaining oil. Saute for 3-4 minutes. Add carrots, garlic, and ginger and saute for 2 minutes. Stir the vegetables and turkey together.

Pour chicken broth in the pan and scrape the bottom of it to deglaze it. Add cabbage, soy sauce, vinegar, salt, and pepper.

Stir well and cover with a lid. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 12-15 minutes, or until cabbage is to your desired tenderness.

Just before serving, add toasted sesame seeds and green onions. Serve alone, over regular rice, cauliflower rice, or with Chinese noodles.
