SPRING IS HERE

Spring is here! Once again, with the fantastic hard work and dedication of our annual meeting committee chair and members, our society has successfully organized another memorable meeting in Scottsdale, AZ. Our annual meeting would not have been a success without the generous contributions of our loyal sponsors.

This is my first message to all our members as your newly elected society president. Thank you for the trust and honor you have given me to serve as your president this year. It is comforting and an honor to be an integral part of this dynamic and progressive organization whose mission is to provide optimal oral health care to all infants, children, and adolescents, including those with special health care needs. We have tried our hardest to achieve this goal since the existence of our organization.

My involvement with CSPD started in the late 90s when I became a fulltime faculty member at the University of Southern California. My mentor, Dr. Rick Udin, subtly encouraged me to get involved. To be an obedient faculty member, I reluctantly joined. To my surprise, I felt welcomed and have met so many dedicated, energetic, kind, and knowledgeable pediatric dentists all over California and the nation. Some of them have become my role models. This genuine camaraderie among colleagues has not diminished but only intensified. CSPD has evolved and become a relevant and robust organization, thanks to excellent and steadfast leadership as the years go by.

CSPD has been the pillar of nurturing and grooming young and able leaders.

This is reflected in its 700 plus strong members. Our leadership is composed of a diverse group of leaders from different backgrounds. They are all outstanding and dedicated volunteers who want to move our profession forward.

I hope to continue the momentum our immediate past president, Dr. Gila Dorostkar, has created by engaging and serving our members. Our strategic planning exercise, which will occur this October, is also an important milestone that our organization will undertake. We will strive to be inclusive of all ideas and continue to mentor aspiring leaders, advocate to protect our members’ practice models and care for the children we serve. These are interesting and challenging times. Many forces beyond our control are shaping our specialty. We must continue to evolve and adapt to change.

This is also a good time to recognize the hard work and dedication of all the past presidents, executive directors, committee chairs, and members who paved the way and built our organization into what it is now. Thank you to our members, who continue to support our organization through the good and challenging times. Our organization needs you more than ever! It will be an exciting year! With all your help and participation, let's make our society stronger.

WSPD JOINS CSPD IN SCOTTSDALE! Dr. Oariona Lowe - Annual Meeting Chair & Dr. Don Schmitt - 2022 Annual Meeting Co-Chair

Sunday ‘special’ breakfast. A big thank you to NuSmile and D4C Brands for the unbelievable ECPD reception at Topgolf and to Convergent/SOLEA and Align Technology (Invisalign/ Itero) for their special breakfast sponsorships.

CSPD President Dr. Gila Dorostkar, now immediate past president, welcomed the attendees early Friday morning to blast off our Annual Meeting and Academic Session. A surprise visit from cheerleaders of a local high school led us with a C-S-P-D cheer, waving pompoms. This invigorating and exciting event led us to welcome our first speaker, Dr. Joel Berg who presented an outstanding lecture on the science behind caries management and managing caries in your office with emerging technologies.

We spent an amazing three days together in Paradise Valley at the Omni Resort and Spa in Montelucia, Scottsdale, AZ! Our first “coming together’ since the March 2020 on-site meeting in San Francisco was an incredible, fun-filled, and cheerful experience.

We Celebrated!! Friends and colleagues joined us from destinations as far as Alaska and Hawaii, New York, New Jersey, Alabama and Tennessee. Smiling faces abound. It was a great feeling to escape from ‘sheltering at home’. Chatter, along with hugs and kisses were non-stop. Dinners and cocktail hours were shared by all. Friends and colleagues renewed friendships with golden memories. There was never a dull moment from the time we gathered together at the Thursday night Welcome reception to the Saturday night cocktail event.

Each day was an extraordinary and unique experience filled with camaraderie and fun. We embraced and mingled with our sponsors by sharing daily breakfasts and breaks in the exhibit hall. Some sponsors hosted special events including the ECPD (Early Career Pediatric Dentists) reception and a Saturday and CSPD BULLETIN 5

The lectures throughout the day were well attended and we walked away with words of wisdom and new knowledge that we could use in private practice. Dr. Juan Yepes completed our academic series on Sunday morning with an excellent presentation on “Pediatric Oral Radiology”. Our entire speaker line up was fantastic starting from Drs. Joel Berg, to Eyal Simchi, Purnima Hernandez, Michael Swetye, Wanda Claro, Randy Lout, and Juan Yepes. Mr. Sam Munaki from Cytek Cybersecurity gave us a wonderful overview of why Cybersecurity is important and why we need to protect ourselves and our offices from ransomware and cyberattacks.

The Resident Posters were judged and winners were awarded for their achievements in the Research and Clinical Study categories. In the Research category, the First Place winner was: Jessica Vargas, UCLA; Second Place: Jung Soo Kim, UCSF. For the Clinical Study category, the First Place winner was: Julia Peng, LLU; Second place: Chih-Chieh Huang, LLU; Third place: Stephanie Shimizu, USC.

The CSPD Foundation hosted a Friday night Reception which was a great success. President Don Schmitt felt the need to “bring back” the reception to not only thank our donors but to also make attendees aware of the Foundation, its purpose, mission and goals.

Next year our 2023 meeting takes us back to the luxurious Fairmont Hotel, atop Nob Hill, in San Francisco, CA. We are currently planning the academic portion of the meeting beginning with a full, One-day Sedation course which will satisfy our conscious sedation

permit requirements. Hot topics including treatment of the “special needs patient”, periodontal and restorative concerns resulting from orthodontic treatment, Molar-Incisor Hypoplasia –MIH, and Dental Team Day II for our auxiliary staff are being planned. Please mark your calendars and join us next year in San Francisco, the City by the Bay, March 23-26, 2023! Save the Date.

Dr. Natalie Mansour - Public Policy Advocate AB 1982 (SANTIAGO) TELEHEALTH DENTISTRY Summary: Would require dental benefit plans to disclose to their insured the impact of telehealth encounters offered by third-party corporate providers on the patient’s benefit limitations, including visit frequency provisions and the patient’s annual maximum.

COMMENT: The bill would have effectively created one standard for the delivery of deep sedation/general anesthesia in the dental office regardless of the age of the patient. CSPD opposed the bill unless amended to specify that for patients 13 – 18 years of age, one person in the room must be ACLS trained and certified while one other person in the room must hold certification in ACLS or PALS, rather than requiring that two persons present must both be ACLS certified.

SB 889 (OCHOA BOGH) NURSE ANESTHETISTS

CSPD: SUPPORT

Summary: This bill would allow a nurse anesthetist to administer general anesthesia or deep sedation to dental patients as directed by a dentist if the nurse anesthetist first receives a permit from the Dental Board of California. A permit endorsement would be required to administer sedation or anesthesia to a patient 7 years or younger.

COMMENT: The measure is intended to increase plan transparency, allowing patients to make informed decisions regarding telehealth use.

AB 2276 (CARRILLO) DENTAL ASSISTANT SCOPE OF PRACTICE Summary: Would allow a dental assistant after satisfactory completion of specified training, and under the direct supervision of the dentist, to provide coronal polishing and application of pit and fissure sealants.

Current Text: Amended 4/6/22 CSPD: SUPPORT COMMENT: The intent of the legislation is to increase the size of the dental workforce available to perform these two functions. CSPD submitted a letter of support for this bill on March 31st.

SB 652 (BATES) SEDATION PERMITTING AND REGULATION Summary: As introduced in the first session, it would extend to all patients regardless of age the current requirements under SB 501 (2018) for dental patients under 13 years of age. It is now intended to be amended in the second session only to extend the implementation of SB 501, allowing in the interim the issuance of new permits and renewal of the existing permits and permit structure.

Current Text: Introduced 1/31/22 CSPD: WATCH COMMENT: Introduced in 2nd Session. Would hold the nurse anesthetist (and the dentist in the room) to the same standards and SB 501 requirements as the physician or dentist anesthesiologist providing deep sedation and general anesthesia in the dental setting. By increasing the number of available anesthesia providers, it would potentially increase access to care. The question that remains to be clarified is under whose license the administration of drugs and medications would be ordered.

Current Text: Amended 5/11/21 CSPD: OPPOSE UNLESS AMENDED TO PROVIDE ONLY A SOLUTION TO THE DELAYED. IMPLEMENTATION OF SB 501

CSPD follows a number of bills under consideration by the state legislature which potentially impact pediatric oral health. Re: AB 2276 (Carrillo) Dental Assistant Scope of Practice

SUPPORT

Dear Business and Professions Chair Berman: The California Society of Pediatric Dentistry (CSPD), representing California’s more than 900 pediatric dental providers, educators, and researchers, supports AB 2276, which would allow a dental assistant, after satisfactory completion of specified training, and under the direct supervision of the dentist, to provide coronal polishing and application of pit and fissure sealants.

CSPDs mission is to support optimal oral health for children, including those with special healthcare and developmental needs. This bill aligns with that strategic objective by increasing the availability and access to care of two important preventive services for children and adolescents within the context of dental team delivery. It does this by first requiring satisfactory completion of a specified course of education and training in these two procedures no less rigorous than that currently included in the broader preparation for the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) license.

It requires certification of the dental assistants’ training by the Dental Board of California.

And, lastly, it requires the procedures be done only under the direct, and not general, supervision of the licensed dentist. Under the Dental Practice Act, Direct Supervision means supervision of the dental procedure, based on specific instructions given by the dentist, who must be physically present in the treatment facility during the performance of the procedure, and which requires the licensed dentist to check and approve the treatment prior to dismissal of the patient from the office. This assures patient safety and the provision of quality care.

For these reasons, and for the health and welfare of children in the state, the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry urges passage of AB 2276 by the Assembly Business and Professions Committee.

“SERVING OUR SPECIALTY THROUGH EDUCATION” Dr. Michael Suh, CSPD Board Director North

Assistant Clinical Professor, University of the Pacific, Arthur A Dugoni School of Dentistry and UCSF Pediatric Dental Residency / La Clinica Never had I imagined I would serve as an educator during my career. Not once did the thought come across my mind as I finished dental school.

I always imagined private practice being the only route, similar to most dental students. It was not until my residency on the East Coast when I realized teaching was my calling. I led and taught a cohort of general practice residents, and continued teaching as a second year pediatric dental resident. These experiences changed the trajectory of my career and I am now committed to dental education. Some ask me how I’m able to pursue academia while juggling private practice, hospital dentistry, high student debt, and family responsibilities (proud dad of a one year-old baby and a rambunctious Goldendoodle). I’d like to share three reasons why becoming an educator is both important and rewarding in our profession of dentistry.

First, the main benefit of joining academia is developing life-long relationships, both with students and work colleagues. There are few things that can match the sense of camaraderie you receive in an academic organization. The opportunity to provide mentorship and serve as a coach for students and residents, along with collaborating with like-minded colleagues brings a whole new dimension to my career. Working alone in private practice can be isolating, and it’s human nature to crave social interaction and have a sense of belonging.

Giving back through education has been a rewarding aspect of my life. There’s no guidebook on becoming an educator. Academia is an opportunity to pay it forward and serve as a role model for students and residents. In addition, my participation in organized dentistry has enhanced my academic experience as many of my board colleagues are educators themselves. Being an educator doesn’t need to take up all your time; some schools welcome your service one day a week or month. You can experience many of the benefits mentioned without committing full-time. I encourage our specialty to make time to educate our future colleagues. Dental education needs us to take a step forward and make a difference in pediatric dentistry.

Second, as an educator I am constantly building my leadership skills. Working with different types of personalities requires emotional intelligence and empathy. Some students don’t need much guidance and work diligently on their own, but some call for extra attention. Learning how to effectively work with all types of individuals has helped me become a better leader and listener. To apply this outside of academics, I’m better able to manage tough parents and unmotivated assistants in private practice.

Finally, being involved in academia makes me a better clinician.

As an educator, I’m responsible for engaging in academic dialogue with students and residents. By teaching novel techniques including Lesion Sterilization Tissue Repair, Hall crowns and SMART (Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique), I reinforce my knowledge and become more confident in treating my own patients. Finally, as part of an academic institution, I have access to current articles and journals which allow me to keep up to date with the latest research and publications.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

REFLECTING ON 25 YEARS IN THE CSPD Dr. Clarice Law, UCLA School of Dentistry

Health Sciences Clinical Professor in the sections of pediatric dentistry and orthodontics at the UCLA School of Dentistry This June, I will be leaving the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry.

Actually, I should rephrase that. I am being sent from the CSPD to continue my organizational partnership with another component group. I call it partnership because the efforts of the CSPD have enhanced the main goals I have had as a full-time faculty member at UCLA in the Section of Pediatric Dentistry. And I am thankful to the CSPD Bulletin editorial team for inviting me to reflect on 25 years in the CSPD. One of the expectations placed on full-time academicians is to be actively involved in scholarly activities. Abilities to produce and disseminate new knowledge are important evaluation criteria. My initial research training was in developmental molecular biology and bone biology. But when I realized how far the gap between innovation and patient benefit was, I decided to change research focus. The CSPD has been an amazing partner in scholarly activities.

CSPD Foundation research grants have supported two research projects that were part of my redirection into topics of greater relevance to clinical pediatric dentistry. And my first CSPeDTalk at the Annual Meeting in 2015 was the foundation for other presentations, taking me to Iowa, Colorado, Washington and also to opportunities with the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry and the College of Diplomates of the ABPD. CSPD/ WSPD leaders like Jonathon Lee connected me with national leaders, which generated even more opportunities to contribute to the publications sponsored by the AAPD. As a brand new faculty member, I thought that the “publish or perish” mantra meant that I should only focus on efforts within my area of study. I did not realize how much more effective I could be by partnering with my tripartite team of CSPD/WSPD/AAPD. To the long-time members of CSPD, I thank you for your continued support. To the new and younger members, know that the CSPD plays a significant role in supporting the faculty members who equipped you for professional practice.

As an educator, it has been my goal to ensure that the next generation of dentists and pediatric dentists provide ethical care to children, supported by evidence. I have loved watching scores of former students and residents build on the foundation we provide during training through CSPD continuing education events.

I remember being a new practitioner, burnt out on studying after years of schooling. I didn’t think I would ever want to sit in a lecture again. Having participated in programs in other components, I am deeply appreciative of the high-quality content organized by our CSPD leaders and now look forward to continued learning each year.

To the CSPD staff and officers (and Oariona Lowe) who make the Annual Meeting and other CE events happen, thank you for keeping us all current so that we can continue to advance oral health for

One of my favorite aspects of academic life has been the opportunity to mentor the next generation of dentists and pediatric dentists.

Beyond education, I have loved to see the learners under my responsibility find places to serve that build on their gifts and talents. I remember my first CSPD Annual Meeting as a resident. More seasoned members were so kind in reaching out to us. That kindness has continued as my roles have shifted from being one in need of support, to one looking for partners in supporting others. CSPD members have taken in our alumni as associates or connected them with other colleagues. And the CSPD as an organization has provided service opportunities for so many of our talented alumni. To those who take on the mantle of mentorship within the CSPD, thank you for taking the educational investment made by academicians to the next level as you launch them into leadership. And to the new and younger members, know that the CSPD has ample opportunities to serve and find your voice beyond clinical practice.

I am going to miss being a part of the CSPD community as I move to my new position at the University of Tennessee. But I look forward to building on the foundation laid during my time in this component as I prepare to contribute to the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry. I am so thankful for the time I have had these 25 years. And I look forward to seeing you all at AAPD events.

FACULTY SHORTAGE: MOMENT OF REFLECTION Dr. Daniela Silva, UCLA School of Dentistry

Residency Program Director and Chair, Section of Pediatric Dentistry, UCLA School of Dentistry Is faculty shortage a real problem in dental education? On April 8th, the AAPD Career Center Job Seeker had 17 open positions for faculty around the country, and the ADEA DentEd Jobs had 10 open positions for pediatric dentistry faculty. According to ADEA there has been an increase of almost 50% in the number of vacant full-time faculty positions in Pediatric Dentistry from 2012-13 to 2018-19 (14 and 27 respectively). A recent informal survey with Department Chairs reflected a much higher number of open faculty positions in pediatric dentistry.

Recruitment and retention of full-time and part-time faculty members in dental education is becoming undoubtedly challenging in the United States. Contributing factors include aging workforce, private practice wage gap, growing student debt, financial compensation, and family commitments. The 2020-21 ADEA survey of dental school seniors found that graduates have an average student loan debt of $304,825 (dental school plus predental education). And the monthly loan payments range from $2,315 to $3,899.

It has been reported in different surveys published in the Journal of Dental Education that the three most common barriers for professionals to teach at least once a week are: family commitments, practice commitments and compensation. On a more positive note, the reported decisions to serve as part-time clinical faculty revolves around teaching and mentoring, as well as giving back to the profession. Dental schools and residency programs are relying more and more on part-time and adjunct (volunteer) faculty to teach dental students and residents.

A significant number of junior faculty have interest in academic dental careers. Institutions should invest in improving on-boarding and professional development, as well as providing incentives, like loan forgiveness, and ensure that new faculty are well equipped, prepared and motivated for the academic environment. Most junior faculty want to succeed in academics. Many say that they knew in advance that they would earn less money than their peers in private practice and that it would take longer to pay off their student loans, but they felt that academics was a better fit for them than private practice. Therefore, they accepted that tradeoff.

Recent ADEA data indicate that a significant proportion of dental school faculty is over fifty years old and that departures of faculty from retirements alone will leave faculty ranks significantly depleted during the next decade. And this continuous accumulative shortage of dental faculty will greatly impact the training of the next generation of practicing pediatric dentists!

How could YOU contribute to this shortage and to the future of OUR specialty? Why not share your knowledge and skills with dental students and/or residents, giving at least one day a month of your time to a dental school? You could also commit to continuous financial contributions and assist dental schools in providing incentives to hire and retain new faculty members.

WSPD PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT IS STILL A PRIMARY CONCERN OF WSPD LEADERSHIP Dr. Dennis Nutter - WSPD President

Acknowledgement is still a primary concern of WSPD leadership. For those of you who have not been following this issue, the AAPD Board of Trustees (AAPD BOT) approved a charge to the Affiliate Advisory Committee to “explore ideas for Affiliate member recognition”. The background and intent of this 2021-2022 charge proposes that Affiliate members should be able to earn “acknowledgement” for completion of “predetermined activities”.

“Acknowledgement” and “predetermined activities” are vague terms. They could mean anything from a perfunctory CE certificate for completion of some weekend courses to a more robust program of courses that could earn a frameable sheet of parchment with impressive badging and elaborate calligraphy which would at least imply that the general dentist holder has special expertise or training in pediatric dentistry. Corporate dental chains that hire general dentists to treat children will sit up and take notice.

To avoid confusing the public about who is a specialist, Affiliate members are prohibited by the bylaws from using the AAPD name, logo, disclose their membership status, or imply special expertise or training. The potential for confusing the public is the problem with “acknowledgement.”

“Acknowledgement” should not be perceived as linked to our ethical responsibility to provide education in pediatric dentistry for general dentists.

AAPD leadership feels that it is premature to try to guess at what the Affiliate Advisory Committee will recommend. AAPD leaders may have given the Affiliate Advisory Committee additional guidance. Perhaps this guidance will direct the committee to produce a product that obviates the concern that a document could be produced for “acknowledgement” that would appear to the public as “implying special expertise or training.”

AAPD leadership has stated that the process for district trustees to inform and discuss this issue with state leadership at the district level will take place after receiving the Affiliate Advisory Committee report this May in San Diego. But they have not ruled out voting to accept a form of “acknowledgement” at the May board meeting before hearing input from membership. This matter is such a polarizing issue that AAPD Trustees may not be able to represent their constituencies with confidence if they have not presented it to those constituencies and felt their pulse.

So let’s hope the AAPD Board of Trustees does the right thing . Let’s hope they do not give an affirmative vote on the “acknowledgement” issue until the AAPD Trustee constituencies (districts, states, academic, armed services and international members) are able to look at what “acknowledgement” looks like, consult with their members and then give informed direction to their respective Trustees as to how to make their argument in discussion and vote. If a form of “acknowledgement” is passed by the AAPD BOT, the only recourse for those who oppose the matter is to travel to Orlando, Florida next May 2023 and vote it down in the AAPD General Assembly.

At this time, the Consensus Statement of the WSPD Board of Trustees is below.

To the Officers and Trustees of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry The Officers and Trustees of the Western Society of Pediatric Dentistry wish to express our opposition to a component of the Affiliate Track Program that is being developed by the Affiliate Advisory Committee (AAC). The “background and intent” of the Affiliate Track Program identifies that it has two components, an “acknowledgement” component and a “predefined activities” component. The WSPD Board specifically opposes the “acknowledgement” component of the Affiliate Track Program.

We are not opposed to the component of developing “pre-defined activities” for Affiliates as a part of AAPD’s recruitment and retention process as long as those activities do not result in an AAPD endorsement of the Affiliate that could imply special expertise or training. We do not think that “acknowledgement” and “predefined activities” are necessarily linked.

In general, we oppose any program development for Affiliate members that would require a change in the current bylaws which prohibits Affiliates from using the “academy name, logo, membership status, or imply special expertise or training”.

AAPD WESTERN DISTRICT TRUSTEE REPORT

THE RETURN OF IN-PERSON MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS AND THE AAPD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE MEMBERSHIP Dr. Jonathon Lee - 11th AAPD Western District Trustee

Thank you to the Volunteer Leadership of CSPD and WSPD for hosting a great membership meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, from March 31 to April 3, 2022.

After a one-year hiatus of In-Person CSPD/ WSPD Membership meetings due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, it was nice to reunite with friends and colleagues I have known and met over the past 25 years and meet new ones this year. Once again, the CE Program was Outstanding. There is something special about In-Person Membership Meetings.

Kellogg School of Management/Northwestern University and the Advanced Leadership Institute at the Wharton School of Business/ the University of Pennsylvania, and make recommendations for their future continuation and direction. The committee would also actively work to identify volunteer leaders to assist the President-elect in the annual process of making appointments to the various AAPD councils and committees.

The 2022 General Assembly will take place on Sunday, May 29, 2022, at 9:30 -11:30 AM local (Pacific) time in Room 6CF at the San Diego Convention Center. AAPD provided notice of this General Assembly as required no less than thirty (30) days before the session, on page 25 of the March 2021 PDT.

The Board of Trustees has evaluated the committee’s efforts and reached the following conclusions: • The committee provided feedback on leadership development programs, enabling the Board of Trustees to evaluate their effectiveness. This work is complete.

• A separate committee has not proven necessary for consideration of future leadership development programs; that is within the purview and expertise of the Board of Trustees.

• Based on committee feedback, the AAPD has revamped and updated its process for identifying and recruiting volunteer leaders to serve on various councils and committees. This work is complete.

This year, there are Constitution and Bylaws amendments to be discussed. In addition, there are proposed changes/additions to oral health policies and best practices of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry that the General Assembly of the Membership will consider.

In conclusion, the Board of Trustees believes this committee has completed its work, AAPD has systemized the programs noted above, so the committee is no longer necessary.

AAPD printed and mailed these proposals in the March 2022 issue of PDT and posted them on the AAPD website. Note: due to the length of the oral health policies and best practices proposals, they are only available online. All members have been alerted to this availability via AAPD E-News.

Speaking of In-Person Meetings, I look forward to seeing everyone in San Diego for the AAPD Annual Session, celebrating 75 years as an Academy. Kudos to CSPD Past President Dr. Jacob Lee and his son, Dr. Aaron Lee, for chairing the Local Arrangements Committee.

One of the integral parts of the AAPD Annual Session is The General Assembly of the Membership. The General Assembly is the meeting of the Active and Life Pediatric Dental Specialist members of AAPD to conduct the business of the Academy.

Constitution and Bylaws Amendments The proposal is for the deletion of the Leadership Development Committee of the Board of Trustees.

Background: In 2016, the Board of Trustees recommended and the General Assembly approve a Bylaws amendment to create a Leadership Development Committee. This recommendation stemmed from a report to the Board from the Talent Pool Task Force. Among many recommendations, this task force recommended that the AAPD establish a permanent committee of the Board of Trustees solely focused on leadership development opportunities for AAPD members. This committee would evaluate the current AAPD programs: the Leadership Institute at the

Reference Committee Hearings Prior to the General Assembly, Reference Committee hearings will occur on Saturday, May 28, 2022, from 10:00 to 11:30 AM in Room 14AB. The hearings are open to all AAPD members, who are strongly encouraged to participate.

The Reference Committee Hearings is the venue for member discussion on any formal resolutions before the General Assembly. This year, the resolutions will be the Constitution and Bylaws amendments and proposed changes/additions to oral health policies and best practices recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

The Reference Committee Hearings is the opportunity for members to present testimony on these matters and other business before the General Assembly. In addition, AAPD will post the Reference Committee Hearing Reports online following the hearings.

Final action on recommendations from the Reference Committees takes place at the General Assembly, where the Active and Life members of AAPD will decide whether or not to approve those recommendations.

New and Other Business of The Academy Members can bring up any new business to discuss with leadership. New business brought before the General Assembly requires approval by a two-thirds (2/3) majority vote to be considered. If the vote is successful for consideration, discussion of the new business will be open to the membership, and the membership will vote upon associated motions. A majority vote passes the motion.
