Tigges farm began in 1935 when Phillip and Lucy Tigges purchased the farm. Irrigation on the farm allowed them to raise barley, alfalfa, sugar beets, pinto beans, potatoes and corn. All the farming was done with horses in 1935. In 1936 a “C” Case tractor was purchased to do the plowing and other heavy field work. Electricity didn’t come to the farm until 1938. In 1939, certified seed potatoes and hybrid seed corn was raised. Robert Tigges, son of Phillip and Lucy helped farm even after he graduated from Colorado A&M in 1939 and was offered a job in South Africa. In 1942, Robert married Mary Lind and they made the farm their home. They took over all of the farming and expanded to include a dairy farm. In 1963 they purchased the farm and continued farming. Robert Tigges passed away in 1986 and Mary and son Ken Tigges continued farming. Tigges Farm helps supply chilies, peppers and squash for Greeley-Evans School District 6.

1 Plants need water, sun, minerals and carbon dioxide to grow. Plants get energy from the sun. Their leaves have a substance called chlorophyll, which changes energy from the sun into food.

Fun Facts: 2 Plants reproduce, or make more plants, through flowers. The flowers have pollen. When the pollen spreads to other plants, it produces fruit and seeds. The seeds then make new plants.

3 Once seeds form, the wind or animals carry them to new places to grow. Plants might not seem exciting, but without them there would be no life on earth.
