WHAT’S NEW

At Greeley-Evans School District 6, the success and achievement of all students is our focus. But we also recognize that students learn in different ways, at different rates and have a multitude of interests that motivate them to learn. That’s why innovation and choice are so important. District 6 seeks to be on the cutting edge of education and instruction, while helping our students prepare for what’s to come after graduation.

Here are just a few of the new initiatives that are helping our students succeed.

Early College Academy: Opening in August 2015 in partnership with Aims Community College, this high school will give students the opportunity to earn an Associates Degree and a high school diploma simultaneously. This rigorous program is a mix between traditional high school and community college classes.

Students can graduate with 60 college credits that will automatically transfer to any four-year Colorado college at no cost to the student!

Blended Learning: District 6 is entering

its third year of implementing blended learning district-wide. This instructional method allows educators to leverage technology to personalize learning for all their students, while getting real-time data to help guide teaching. Eight more schools – including four middle schools, two K-8 schools and one elementary school - will begin implementing blended learning in 2015-16.

Prairie Heights Middle School:

This new middle school will open in August 2015, on time and under budget. With more than 100,000 square feet of learning space in this modern facility, Prairie Heights will replace John Evans Middle School, which is being torn down this summer. The project was funded through a Building Excellent Schools Today grant and an $8 million bond issue approved by voters in 2012. It features state-of-the art technology and design, geared to help students achieve. Prairie Heights will join Salida del Sol Charter Academy, which opened in 2014, as the newest schools in District 6.

ACHIEVEMENT & GRADUATION

In 2014-15, the Colorado Measures of Academic Success state assessments were administered in all District 6 schools. The CMAS assessments align with the new state standards and all the assessments are given online. This will be a baseline year for those assessments, and results won’t be available until summer and fall 2015. Last year, District 6 students took the TCAP tests, and those overall results are included below.

District 6 continues to exceed the state average for on-time graduation. Many interventions, alternative schools and recovery programs help our students earn their high school diploma.

Financial transparency and fiscal responsibility are priorities for District 6. While our school district remains in the bottom 5 percent of Colorado school districts in terms of funding, we continue to manage our limited resources as efficiently as possible.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

We know that it takes a community to help students be successful. That is why District 6 is grateful for the numerous partnerships that are dedicated to helping our students. Here are just a few examples of some incredible partnerships:

Internships: Through a collaborative effort between the G. Town Promise, the City of Greeley and District 6, more than 80 paid internships will be offered to students this summer in a variety of jobs and businesses, from grounds keeping to engineering to graphic arts. The Mayor’s Workforce Initiative has helped link businesses and organizations with students to give them practical work experience before they leave high school.

Career Pathways: The 12 Career Pathways offered to high school students wouldn’t be possible without many community partnerships that help students in these programs. NCMC and Banner Health continue to support the Health Science Academy at Greeley Central High School; many local engineers support the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics pathway at Northridge High School; Aims Community College and local contractors are giving students in the Construction Trades pathway hands-on experience and training. These are just a few examples of how our community partnerships are helping our students get real-world experience!

Get Involved: In 2014-15, nearly 700 volunteers performed nearly 16,000 hours of service in

our schools. Since the volunteer management system was implemented in 2012, 4,685 volunteers have registered with the district, logging nearly 51,000 hours of service.

School Kickoff Community Celebration: In 2014, District 6 hosted the first School

Kickoff Community Celebration, and it was a huge success! Funded totally through private donations, the district provided 775 free backpacks filled with school supplies to students, served a free lunch to more than 1,200 attendees and provided 80 on-site sports physicals. More than 50 community booths were featured at this event, and student groups provided entertainment throughout the day. This year’s event is August 8 at Island Grove Regional Park, and more than 2,000 backpacks will be distributed. City of Greeley and Achieving Community Excellence: The City of Greeley and the ACE program helped facilitate and paid for the installation of artificial turf at District 6 Stadium and the adjacent soccer field. The turf will be installed this summer, and will allow for usage of these facilities to grow tenfold in coming years. ACE and District 6 have also partnered on other programs, including a Youth Leadership Conference, the Crown Jewels busing program that allows students to ride city buses for free, middle school sports programs, and concussion training for coaches, athletes and parents.

SAFETY & SECURITY

The safety and security of our students and staff is our first priority in District 6.

We continue to maintain many systems and procedures to make sure our schools are secure, including Video Entry Intercom Systems at all elementary, K-8 and middle schools, as well as Jefferson High School; campus monitors at all middle and high schools; Greeley Police Department resource officers at middle and high schools, and training that prepares staff to act in an emergency.

This year, we also expanded our anti-bullying curriculum to all elementary and middle schools, working to help students recognize and prevent this type of harassment. We also partner with North Range Behavioral Health to make sure our students have the support they need in order to access education.
