These two notes have their strings muted hard with blu-tac to create a near pitchless, whip-like attack.

The “pizzicato sforzato” effect: Pluck the string forcefully, lifting it vertically. Where the dotted lines and diamond heads continue the same pitch, do NOT re-attack, but rest a small metal implement on the indicated string and allow a metallic resonance to be set off by the stringʼs vibration for as long as possible.

Percussion (1 player)

In OPEN: Harmonics are indicated by diamond note heads above a conventional one. The lower note is the fundamental (the note played) ; the higher one is the sound heard. For practical reasons, alternative fundamentals may be substituted, though where possible the marked ones should be used.

Strings Viola and cello 2 are tuned as shown in bar 1. Viola reverts to the usual tuning where indicated.


Stage Layout Throughout SIT, all but the solo clarinet, celli and percussion should be very soft: offstage/at a distance and hidden behind screens/doorways as much as possible.
