I began Translucent Thoughts in December of 2003. When I finished it fourteen months later in January of 2005, I realized that it had evolved into a series of distinct moments that are intuitively connected to each other, but are not united by one particular narrative or theme. The work is a musical stream-ofconsciousness, where each musical idea represents a moment in my imagination.

I like my titles to evoke narratives for their pieces (instead of, say, String Quartet No. 2) – yet to this day, Translucent Thoughts is the only work of mine whose title came after the piece’s completion. I wanted to convey the sense that a journey is taken, and that each “thought” or musical idea is somewhat “translucent,” by which I mean ephemeral and difficult to fully grasp. The musical ideas in this piece vary; some moments are more translucent than others and some are even transparent. After the climax, the music becomes reflective, conjuring up the aftermath of this journey, where one is left to absorb what has just occurred. Time stands still, and the music gradually dissolves to silence leaving one last thought to observe.
