MASON BATES ANI MA’AMIN

for SATB & Piano

Ani ma'amin roughly translates to "I believe" and is based on Maimonides' Thirteen Principles of Faith. According to legend, one version of the tune was composed by a Modzitzer Hasid en route to the Treblinka concentration camp. Either because of this mythical origin, or simply because of the song's deep beauty, it is still frequently sung at Holocaust Remembrance Day services as a plea for hope and resilience.

This choral reimagination is extracted from The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, produced by The Metropolitan Opera in Fall 2025, and occurs during a heartbreaking moment when Jewish prisoners are being transported to Auschwitz. An adaptation of the novel by Michael Chabon, the opera tells the story of two Jewish cousins who invent an anti -fascist superhero and launch their own comic-book series, hoping to recruit America into the fight against Nazism.
