Marimba Concerto was written for Makoto Nakura. It was commissioned and premiered by the Vermont Symphony conducted by Kate Tamarkin in September 1997.

In 2000, I revised the orchestration slightly to include flute, contrabassoon, trumpet, and xylophone.

After marimbist Ji Su Jung began performing the work several years later, an opportunity arose for her to record it in June 2021 with Marin Alsop conducting the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. I decided to rework the orchestration of this student work of mine rather more significantly, while retaining the instrumentation of the second version. This version is what I consider to be definitive. The older incarnations of the piece are no longer offered for sale or rental.
